Editor's letter

As I write this letter, Beatrice and Freddie are playing together in the garden, something that does not happen often (cue a gentle shove from Beatrice!). The sun is strong, the birds are chirping away, and I finally feel relaxed - it would appear as though the summer has finally arrived. Enough about us, moving on to the latest issue…

What's new? With many shops trying to stay ahead and offer something different, we have featured the latest brands to hit the boutiques (page 11). Trends this season include seaside style - think gingham and stripes in blues and greens, a fresh take on monochrome, and as always with summer, a range of neutral tones and materials, from page 15. You'll find everything you need for the beach, including swimwear, kaftans, sundresses, and accessories, on page 25.

We have featured Luella Rockerfella's latest photoshoot, inspired by L King's Baby Outlaw. Lauren Burnett says that the fierce women of the Southern states of America embody the strength and character of Luella Rockerfella's customers, her girl gangsters, as she calls them (page 22). In our 'Throwing Shade' editorial, Toni Neil showcases the latest offerings in statements sunglasses (from page 28). Mark Stephenson photographs Gosia at La Haule Manor for our 'Summer Escape' editorial. Gosia looks stunning in bold prints and easy to wear summer dresses, layered with gold statement jewellery (from page 34).

Not forgetting the little ones, we've put together a style guide for all outings, including the beach, park and partywear pieces (page 46). I spoke to Martina, founder of Mamaroo – a new clothing company focusing on gender-neutral pieces – about her new venture. She offers adorable sets, shoes, and accessories in neutral colours, perfect for those who aren't fond of the cliché dinosaur and fairy prints (page 48). Finishing our kids' feature, Mark Stephenson photographs Julian, Kelly, Issac and Siena Gray at Hamptonne Country Life Museum. The family had lots of fun feeding the chickens, playing in the park, and walking around the stunning grounds (from page 50).

Our beauty section includes plenty of new products. Whether you're looking to rejig your current routine

or are after something a little more specific – SPF and hair protection, for example, we have you covered. Kate Morrison shares her favourite products for the ultimate summer look - dewy skin, bold eyes, and neutral lips.

Moving on to wellness, Harriet Rouse talks about women's health. Endometriosis, menopause, and miscarriage are slowly gaining the media attention the subjects deserve, but more needs to be done. We need to speak up about our own struggles to help and support others going through similar situations (page 63).

Throwing a dinner party this summer? We've featured a selection of tableware pieces that will leave your guests talking. Christian Gott shares his favourite canapés, including classic bruschetta and devilled eggs.

This issue also includes articles on aromatherapy, honesty huts in Jersey and home and garden trends.

As I always, I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.

LUELLA ROCKERFELLA

Lauren Burnett started Luella Rockerfella whilst in early recovery from addiction. She learnt everything about business using transferable skills from her past, and with pure grit and determination, began building her empire.

Luella Rockerfella has always represented the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos, those that feel they don't fit in with the mainstream.

"We call them our girl gangsters - women who are unapologetically themselves. They know they don't fit inside a neat little box in which society thinks women should act. They bounce to the beat of their own drum. Our hashtag #girlgangster means so much more than a tagline."

Like many businesses, Luella Rockerfella hit some tough times during the pandemic, but they continue to fight like in the brand's spirit. Lauren recently styled and directed a photoshoot promoting Luella Rockerfella's latest collection.

"The shoot was inspired by an L King song, Baby Outlaw. The fierce women of the southern states of America with their cowgirl boots on. Their southern charm, wit, strength and character embodied the characteristics of our girl gangsters. Our UK chav subculture also inspired us. We at Luella Rockerfella love a subculture!"

Luella Rockerfella wants to empower women to evolve, expand and take risks. Whether that be in fashion or business. Own your past and create your future #GirlGangster

THE SALVATION ARMY

How many of us buy a coffee every day? Many of us will. But how many of us buy a coffee from somewhere they know the money will be used to support those living here in Jersey? Emily Smith, community centre manager for The Salvation Army, explains

Nestled away on Minden Street behind the car park is The Salvation Army. With its bright red doors and iconic shield, the Jersey hub supports hundreds of islanders every year. From our base in St Helier, we run a community café and charity shop. We work with several other agencies and charities, run a food bank, support islanders leaving sheltered accommodation to move into rented homes, work with volunteers on back to work placements and much more.

Just last year, we supported hundreds of individuals and invested thousands of pounds in buying food to feed those within the community. In April 2019, the pandemic hit our island, and we saw a huge rise of people financially struggling. We couldn’t sit back and do nothing and decided we needed to do something to help. We worked in partnership with existing food banks, The Grace Trust and Saint Vincent de Paul, to coordinate a food bank from our site. Our team of volunteers delivered to 600 people a week at the height of the crisis. Between March and August last year, we distributed more than 18,000 tins of baked beans,

6,000 loaves of bread, 14,500 tins of tuna and 11.1 tonnes of rice. We are still supporting a number of those individuals now. As well as offering financial support, we also provide pastoral support and a listening ear. The Salvation Army is not only a charity but a church too. We operate in more than 130 countries globally, and at the centre of what we do is our church. There is always someone available in the café to talk to during our opening hours, and we meet every Sunday at 10.30am for our church service. We are currently meeting in various locations, so please keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details.

At the heart of our hub is our community café, which is open Monday to Friday between 9am until 4pm. Every day from our café we serve free, homemade soup made on site by our café assistants. The café is a meeting place for people who may feel lonely or isolated, it’s a welcoming place where everyone is treated as equal and with dignity and respect, and it’s a safe place. As well as serving soup, we have a range of affordable food on offer. The café also acts as a meeting place for various agencies doing incredible work on the island.

42
CHARITY

And the good work doesn’t stop there. We are also passionate about protecting our planet. As well as running our charity shop, we manage 60 green clothing bins across Jersey. We actively promote the benefits of buying secondhand clothing and think it is really important the clothes sold in our shop are affordable. Our green clothing bins help keep less than 1% of textile waste from going to landfill.

The green bins are emptied regularly by The Salvation Army Trading Company and the majority of the clothes are repurposed and used for things like home installation or cleaning products. We also benefit financially from the clothing bins and thousands of pounds is returned to Jersey every year thanks to you donating clothes.

For many people in Jersey, going to work can be a huge step, which is why our volunteer placements are so important. We have been working with Highlands College for a number of years and support students studying on

their Life Skills course. We also work with the government and the Back to Work recruitment service, and Jersey Employment Trust to offer volunteer placements to islanders looking for work. We have volunteers in both our café and charity shop, as well as helping us make and deliver our food parcels.

We couldn’t do any of this work without donations, grants and money spent in our café. Something as simple as spending £1 on a cup of tea or £2 on your daily coffee means we can continue supporting people here in Jersey. Next time you’re in St Helier and fancy a brew, why not come and see us through the big red doors on Minden Street. 

For more information like our Facebook page [The Salvation Army – Church and community work in Jersey], follow us on Instagram [salvation_army_jersey] or pop in and see us.

BESPOKE CLOTHING

My Little Jersey has been creating bright and bold bespoke clothing for young children, and the occasional adult since 2018.

Whilst on maternity leave in 2018 Suzy identified a lack of choice when it came to exciting colours for her newborn son so she set about making her own. She was soon making them for friends and family before founding My Little Jersey and opening her order books to the public.

Whilst specialising in newborn to age 6, Suzy will take on most challenges and has made a number of mother and daughter matching items. You can contact Suzy via Facebook or Instagram at My Little Jersey.

MAMAROO; GENDER-NEUTRAL CLOTHING

MamaRoo, a new children's clothing company, has a strong focus on gender-neutral pieces. Martina, the founder, tells us all about the business.

WHY DID YOU START MAMAROO?

The idea for the business started from struggling to find clothing items that I liked for my two boys. I found myself going into clothing shops and seeing the same generic patterns (dinosaurs, trucks, checkered prints etc.)

I began to shop online, but the shipping costs and ways of getting the clothes on the island didn't work. Some popular brands are charging a £20 shipping fee; couple this with having goods held by customs and online shopping is no longer feasible.

As a busy working mum, I felt it would make sense to have a clothing brand available for minimalist shoppers to shop from their phone in their free time and collect when convenient for them. With two children under the age of 3, I find parking and shopping in town difficult, with less time to 'browse', and this is where MamaRoo could solve the issue.

WHY ARE YOU FOCUSING ON GENDERNEUTRAL CLOTHING?

I fully believe there is a gap in the market here in Jersey for children's clothing. Not only is there a gap in this sector, but the vast gap is providing gender-neutral clothing for people who like minimalist designs. You will often walk into a shop and find it divided into boy/girl sections - as a mother of sons, I find myself shopping in the girl's area for clothes. After talking to other mother's, I found many are doing the same and struggle to find plain clothing. At Mamaroo, we are trying to combat the idea of shopping for 'pink or blue' and allow you to simply 'shop' for your child, regardless of their gender.

HOW REGULARLY WILL STOCK BE UPDATED?

We will be updating stock seasonally, but this will differ. We will restock bestselling items, listen to our customers and offer something we think they will love.

WHAT AGES ARE AVAILABLE?

We are currently stocking between ages 0-5.

HOW CAN I PLACE AN ORDER?

Orders can be placed via Instagram DMs, Facebook Messenger, or contacting our work mobile (07797 817961).

CAN I COLLECT MY ORDER?

Collections are available to make it more convenient for busy working parents. We usually need a couple of days to make sure clothing is lovingly packed, but find this the most suitable method for our customers. We also offer island-wide delivery service for £2.50 or free on any orders over £50.

THE ULTIMATE SUMMER LOOK

With the days getting warmer, it’s time to switch up your makeup routine. Think dewy sun-kissed skin, bright eyes and a slightly better version of your own lips. Kate Morrison shares her favourite products for the ultimate summer look.

60

SPF

My favourite brand for SPF is the Heliocare range. They offer a product for every skin type and concern, harnessing the power of plants to protect the skin and prevent the signs of ageing. Also available in tints and foundations.

For the all-year foundation wearer, I love Mac’s Prep + Prime Face protect SPF50; the silky, non-oily formula melts into the skin and has the added benefit of preventing the appearance of dark circles. The formula also creates a soft-focus finish when worn under foundation.

DEWY SKIN

The ultimate for dewy skin is MAC Face + Body foundation. This iconic lightweight liquid is a staple of makeup artists around the world. The hydrating formula glides on skin, can be used as an instant self-tan all over and is waterproof and transfer-resistant when dry. Top tip: Squeeze some into your fingertips and rub hands vigorously together until the formula thickens to increase coverage and apply with fingers where needed.

For those with oily skin, fear not, set with a dusting of Hourglass Veil Translucent setting powder. The formula leaves an invisible natural skin finish while minimising the appearance of pores and lines. Top tip: bake that under eye for extra-long wear.

Cream products are the seasons must-have. What better place to start than cult favourite Nars “Orgasm” shade in Liquid Blush for a long-lasting natural glow? Pop some on your lips too!

BOLD EYES

This is the summer of the epic eye. It’s all about experimenting with bold hues of shadow and liner. Get the look with Huda Beauty Obsession palettes; these versatile mini palettes come in various colours, with nine shades of highly pigmented mattes and shimmers in each palette.

Compliment the look with the fierce fox eye trend using longlasting, smudge-resistant, waterproof Kat Von D tattoo liner. Top tip: start with an eyeshadow to help guide the shape. Or mix it up with NYX Vivid bright coloured liquid liners available in all colours of the rainbow. Use the liner and shadows as the perfect accessory to match any outfit.

NATURAL LIP

Breaking the taboo

Women's issues, including menopause and endometriosis, are becoming subjects discussed by mainstream media, but more needs to be done to raise awareness.

Words by Harriet Rouse

Menopause. Endometriosis. Miscarriage. Infertility. All these hushhush subjects that have been whispered about for generations are finally – finally - becoming subjects that are talked about regularly by mainstream media. Women are starting to talk more and –perhaps more importantly – talk louder.

From Davina McCall's 'Sex, Myths and the Menopause', to Caitlin Moran's 'More Than a Woman' and Kristen Scott Thomas's wonderful speech in Fleabag (worth a google if you've not seen it), suddenly women are openly talking about their symptoms and seeking answers and solutions. The last decade has seen a tangible movement towards talking about problems that have previously been offlimits. And thank goodness. It's about time. 

63 WELLNESS

Throughout medical history, the default for data has been The Average Man. From height to weight, everything from Crash Test Dummies to the data on heart attack symptoms to the size of your mobile phone (yup, men's hands, which explains why some of the larger phone models need a two-handed approach from women) has drawn on data that has been based on the male default. Caroline Crido Perez, in her book 'Invisible Women', explores this incredibly well, touching on so many aspects of our everyday life – and medical treatments – that simply do not consider how women are different from men.

However, female fertility, menopause, and chronic conditions such as endometriosis have always been largely ignored or talked about in hushed tones are uniquely female issues. So often, our symptoms are very much thought of as something that we need to suffer through in silence. The assumption that we moan too much about our pain, that we should accept period pains are just part of life. And heavy flow?! That's not something we need to talk about! And don't bring up clots, anaemia, debilitating pain or anything very much associated with periods. As for fertility, it's so easy to ignore it when a friend has a fertility issue, lest they actually talk to you about the challenging and emotional journey that they may be enduring. But sometimes it's OK to ask someone how they really are. And to listen to what they are experiencing. We might have been told that people don't need to hear the details, but perhaps sometimes we do so that we can all start to understand and support our friends, family and colleagues more openly.

Things are beginning to change. Perhaps because our generation has so many strong female voices to represent them, not just a front for what we are supposed to be. Maybe we are the first generation of women with immediate access to so many other women through social media. There has also been a seismic shift in the last fifty years, resulting in many more female doctors who can at least empathise with the symptoms that we have. Instead of accepting the brain fog and hot flushes as something we should get on with, or the monthly agony, or the desperate sadness of infertility, we are looking for answers. Instead of shutting up about it, we are looking for answers, they are looking for solutions, and we aren't accepting 'it's just part of life' as an answer for symptoms

that not only impact day to day life but can put a tangible constraint on living it.

Endometriosis, a condition in which the lining grows outside of the womb, is another such subject that is finally entering the headlines. See, it turns out painful, heavy periods are not necessarily just 'part of life'; there is sometimes an underlying cause. Whilst diagnosis is still taking far too long (with far too few specialists for what is a highly specialised condition), it turns out there are loads of sufferers out there – and we are starting to talk.

Journalist Ria Wolstenholme has worked tirelessly to increase awareness of endometriosis. As she says, "growing up in a dominant female family meant next to nothing was off the table when it came to open honest discussion. So, for me, the taboo surrounding talking about women's health was alien to me until I first got told I "didn't need to go into detail" when discussing my endometriosis with a man for the first time. The idea that if your health issue is linked to your reproductive organs makes it a conversation only fit for the ears of other women or a health professional is exactly why so many women suffer in silence. Having endometriosis means I've had to get comfortable talking openly about my periods, pains and intimate details about my private life to doctors, friends and family alike. If I don't, then nobody would know what I'm going through. If I didn't speak up, nobody would be able to do it for me. And I hope that the more is done to stop trivialising and undermining women's health, the better we all get at speaking honestly and openly about what we're going through."

That women's health issues have been whispered about rather than openly discussed previously isn't entirely surprising. My Grannie remarked of my miscarriage that it was 'no doubt for the best, not out of cold-heartedness, but because that's what she'd told herself when she'd had one several decades earlier. When I asked a friend in their sixties for their experience of menopause, she said that it was very hard to explain symptoms of menopause to a male GP, or for a male Consultant to understand the difference between standard cramps and ones that were something to worry about.

Women only learned by talking to other women, and so much of it was deemed taboo. Even now, 'period chat' isn't one that you see many women entirely comfortable discussing.

64
"So often, our symptoms are very much thought of as something that we need to suffer through in silence."

We need to keep talking, and we need to keep talking loudly. We need to create dialogue around the conversations that make women and men uncomfortable. If we talk about it, they'll start to not be things that people are uncomfortable hearing about.

We need to normalise miscarriage and baby loss; we need people to talk openly about fertility struggles and chronic debilitating conditions. We absolutely need to talk more about perimenopause, menopause, and the havoc that fluctuating hormones can play, because it's not something that we have to just put up with anymore. There are beginning to be viable alternatives to suffering in silence, and the scare stories surrounding HRT are being largely debunked. Thousands of women are realising that there is an answer… and even if it's not quite the answer they were looking for, they are not alone; they are certainly not going mad.

Above all, though, we must always be honest with each other. The more we talk about these things, the more normalised they become.

The less we feel embarrassment or shame, and the more we understand what other people may be going through, we can strive forward in progressive treatments and medications that work. And, perhaps most importantly, we can cease to associate any sort of shame with not coping with symptoms. There is no shame. Half the population are there with you. 

Aromatherapy

You may have heard of aromatherapy, but are you aware of the benefits essential oils offer?

Aromatherapy has become something of a buzzword recently. Whilst the use of essential oils has been around for centuries, we're rediscovering the profound health benefits of essential oils due to the rise in holistic approaches to selfcare and growing scientific validation.

What is aromatherapy?

Using essential oils, aromatherapy works through the sense

of smell and skin absorption via diffusers, aromatic spritzers, inhalers and facial steamers. Products made with essential oils can also be purchased, including bath salts, body oils, creams, and lotions. With a few exceptions, essential oils should never be used neat and should be mixed with a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba oil before applying topically. When inhaled, the scent in essential oils travels directly from the olfactory nerves to the brain and significantly impacts the amygdala, the brain's emotional centre.

66

Aromatherapy can help manage pain, improve sleep quality and reduce stress and anxiety. It has many other benefits and is said to help soothe sore joints, treat headaches and migraines, and improve digestion and boost immunity.

As awareness of the benefits of essential oils increases, aromatherapy is gaining more recognition in science and medicine. According to Expert Market Research, The global aromatherapy market size was estimated at USD 1.5 billion in 2020 and is expected to witness a CAGR (Compound annual growth rate) of 10.6% over the forecast period of 2021-2026.

What are essential oils?

In short, essential oils are basically plant extracts. They're made by steaming or pressing various parts of a plant (flowers, bark, leaves or fruit) to capture the compounds that produce fragrance. It can take several pounds of a plant to create a single bottle of essential oil.

Essential oils are not regulated and do not have to meet any purity standards. When buying essential oils, look for bottles that contain a single essential oil in its purest form (100% essential oil with no other fillers). Fragrance or perfume oils are made from essential oils combined with chemicals or entirely from chemicals, so they are not suitable for aromatherapy.

Health experts have warned about misleading products, including those using the label 'therapeutic grade'. There is no such thing as 'therapeutic grade' or 'certified pure' essential oils; this is simply a marketing tool that stems from the '90s.

Essential oils for beginners

If you're new to aromatherapy, you will be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed at the number of oils and combinations available. There is no one-size-fits-all when

it comes to aromatherapy; for example, whilst lavender is widely known for its calming properties, if you can't stand the smell, then it's probably not for you.

Each essential oil has an array of unique healing properties, uses, and effects. Combining essential oils to create a synergistic blend creates even more benefits.

Safety guide

As you explore the uses of essential oils, pay attention to how the different oils and methods affect you. Always talk to your doctor before starting any aromatherapy treatment. Remember that aromatherapy should be a complementary therapy; it should not replace any doctorapproved treatment plan. 

Honesty huts

When you think of honesty huts does your mind immediately go to fruit, vegetables, and flowers? There are some amazing honesty huts serving a range of produce from homemade jams, chutneys, cordials, cakes, and other treats.

IZZY’S SHED Isabelle Jepson

Isabelle Jepson set up Izzy's Shed and started selling her produce in July 2020. She specialises in jams, chutneys, sauces, relishes and cordials. Her aim is to produce products with a twist, things you cannot buy in the supermarket.

"I just love the creativity of producing original products by mixing different ingredients, sometimes a bit random but it works most of the time!"

The homemade jams are much lower in sugar than commercial ones, with only 40% sugar compared to 60-70% in store bought jams. The chutneys are all made in small batches using fresh ingredients sourced mainly from Homefield growers but also from friends gardens. Unrefined sugars are used whenever possible as well as quality vinegars, red and white wine and cider.

"It's very rewarding to receive positive comments from my customers and as they keep coming back and trying new things it must be good!"

DAISY’S COUNTRY BAKES

Daisy Larbalestier

Due to the pandemic, Daisy found herself unemployed, which gave her the push she needed to start her own venture.

“I’ve always loved the idea of having my own little shop, selling my own produce and all kinds of exciting goodies. With the pandemic encouraging an incredible amount of support to small local businesses and roadside stallholders, this really inspired me to open up an honesty box, which happened to turn into an Honesty Hut - and the story continues!”

The Honesty Hut is filled with country delights, including preserves, gifts and plants. You’ll also find delicious home bakes.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve baked and baked and baked! I studied Home Economics for GCSE and A-Level and went on to Highlands College to gain my Diploma

in Culinary Arts. After being lucky enough to have numerous work experiences in Michelin Star restaurants, my plan was to one day become a chef, but inevitably found myself down a different path altogether.”

Another aspect Daisy is excited about is the blossoming of cake orders for customers’ special occasions.

“I offer a wide range of bakes to order as well as layer cakes personalised to each and every request - if you have a desire to enquire, please get in touch! I post daily updates on my latest offerings on Facebook and Instagram - “Daisy’s Country Bakes”. Being in an area on La Route de St Jean with other honesty boxes nearby, it makes for a fantastic outing filled with a variety of local delights!”

A HIDDEN TREASURE

The Hidden Garden Co was set up by Jules Walker who wanted to create a nursery where everyone is welcome and can enjoy a green space.

“Gardening was entwined within my childhood, as my mother was an avid gardener. She sadly passed away with dementia, and to cope with the grief I had a vision of creating The Hidden Garden Co in her honour. I set to work, along with my partner, Tony Moon and with the helping hand of Mark Berresford, an experienced horticulturist, to create a nursery where everyone is welcome and can enjoy a green space. To enjoy the beauty of nature evolving and walk amongst the plants and trees, listening to the birds sing and encouraging people to bring their dogs and children to connect with nature.”

“We cater for every individual need, whether it be a small pot plant to sit by a back door to supplying large mature plants and trees to create that instant impact in a large garden or a small space.”

“Our latest project is the introduction of a new exciting range of garden buildings to complement any outdoor area. With the focus of working from home or wishing to enhance an outdoor living space, the outdoors has become a part of our everyday norm and gardening has become a saving grace for so many. We run a free gardening advisory service which has really taken off, particularly with people who have no experience or understanding of gardening and need the security and help of one of our horticulturists to advise them, providing appropriate ideas and visions for them to take away. It is a concept that is proving popular.”

“The pandemic has created a new generation of garden enthusiasts. During lockdown we saw a significant shift in the world of gardening with a newly found passion for all things green emerging particularly as the enforced time at

home brought a need to connect with nature and proved stimulation, both physically and mentally for all. Many islanders have invested in their gardens and this outdoor interest has increased in popularity in 2021. The desire to grow and cultivate vegetables and plants appears to have heightened people’s interests in gardening, bringing great satisfaction and a renewed energy to their lives. It is great to witness and be part of the journey.”

“A whole new breed of gardeners has evolved, with what the Royal Horticultural Society is calling a new “golden age” where horticulture is being cultivated by an influx of new garden enthusiasts and long may it continue!” 

Echocardiogram

An extract from Restricted Movement by

I’m topless on the padded table in the hospital, my back to the sonographer, my face towards the screen. The gel-coated wand gives me goose bumps. Nipples harden. In front of me, black screen at first and swish. Like breathing with a SCUBA tank, the sound both drowns out and amplifies all background noise. The black changes to masses of grey dots like when I jump into a swimming pool and only see the bubbles that I’ve made until they clear. Then there it is. My heart pumping on its own. One grinchy hand clapping, sarcastically. Well done, you. You’ve lived another day. She moves the wand to show some Venus fly trap jaws with ragged edges, chomping blood. Then the pulmonic valve—a bulging, wrinkly, blinking robot vulture eye—organically mechanical. Its view is something I will never see.

At last, in the second chamber, some joy: two kids at pattycake with nowhere else to go, playing their uninterrupted game on a loop until I die. This is the closest I will ever get to an obstetric ultrasound. This caged heart is mine and never leaving me.
