Red-Letter Days The month of February brings with it a double whammy: Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, both memorable red-letter (or red envelope?) days. Chinese New Year falls on February 5, ushering in The Year of the Earth Pig, a most amiable sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which promises to bring good luck to everyone, especially those born in the year of the Rabbit, Rat and Monkey. Chinese New Year comes with its many traditions, many of which we observe at Manila House. You might have noticed the Lobby festooned with two clementine trees, which symbolize prosperity. On February 2 in the evening, we will present a lion and dragon dance, traditionally performed to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits. And for the first time, Manila House will be offering a sumptuous Chinese menu, ideal for banquet-style dinners with the whole family. Valentine’s Day, when I was a child, was always an occasion I looked forward to, because we celebrated it with my parents and siblings. We would all get dressed up and head off to the only French restaurant then, Au Bon Vivant, and have a wonderful meal. I was well aware that this was a special date day, as it was impossible not to notice that at all the other tables sat couples. This Valentine tradition continued well into my teens, and it may be that my parents would have preferred to dine by themselves, without kids in tow, but for me, part of the appeal of the evening was not having to stress about who would be my own Valentine for the evening. Sorry, boys, I already have a date for Valentine’s! This year, as is our custom, we offer an eight-course Valentine's Day degustation dinner at Avenue Deck, which suits couples, whether on their own or sitting with friends, or families. You get to define how you want to celebrate the day; the most important thing is to do it with love. Gong Xi Fa Cai and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Get to Know: Mar and Anthony Mar and Anthony work hard to make every exhibit as immaculately hung and displayed as possible. From ingress to egress, this duo makes sure all the artworks are in good hands. Looking after the exhibits is only one aspect of their job. They're also the technical go-to guys who keep events running smoothly How did you end up working at Manila House? M: I used to work for Net Park as a Maintenance Technician until Sir Francis, our previous Operations Manager, offered me an opportunity to work directly at Manila House. A: Our previous General Manager offered me a job at Manila House in 2017. What do you like most about your job? M: I love my working relationship with my partner. We always help each other. A: I like our daily unique operations and events, but I must say, my supportive coworkers and the empowering management is what I love most about my job. What have you learned about art from your experiences at Manila House? M: I learned about how to take care of paintings and how to install them properly. We always make sure the artworks are clean and displayed well. A: Proper installation of the artwork is very important because these artworks are valuable. They deserve to be nicely displayed.
From all the exhibits that you've helped install since working for Manila House, which one is your favorite? Both: Ben Cab What do you like to do on your days off? M: I love cooking and spending quality time with my loved ones. I also like watching movies and going to church. A: I like spending time with my kids on my days off. I also enjoy watching action and fantasy movies and TV series. Avengers is my favorite! What are you looking forward to in the Year of the Earth Pig? M: I'm looking forward to a great eventful year, and I am ready for the challenges, too! Furthermore, I am excited to spend 2019 working in Manila House. A: I'm excited for the new and improved storage of Manila House, which will help organize our things in the workplace. I'm also looking forward to another productive year at Manila House!

Giorgio Guglielmino An avowed art lover, the Italian Ambassador is also an author of several books on contemporary art. He expounds on this particular passion on February 18 at Manila House as part of Art Fair Philippines' 10 Days of Art

What was the first work of art that you ever purchased? My mother used to take me to a lot of museums so I was exposed to art very young. I can tell you the first work that I bought was a very small ink sketch by an Italian artist called Fortunato Depero, a Futurist, that was sketched during the 30's and was an advertisement for a New York restaurant. That was when I was 21 and it was the only thing I can afford. I was very fond of it.
Philippines, I was Ambassador to Bangladesh and before that I was Consul-General in Kolkata, all places with difficult weather conditions such as humidity. Do you also collect local artists from the country you're living in? I always try to get involved in the local art scene, and the same is happening in the Philippines.
What can you say about the rise of contemporary art?
Have any particular Filipino caught your eye?
Contemporary art has never been so popular, now everybody wants to have contemporary art in their homes, for various reasons - either because they are passionate collectors or because they just want to show off. This also affects the price of contemporary art today.
I admit that before coming to the Philippines, the only Filipino artist I knew was Manuel Ocampo. Because he is quite well-known in Europe and lived there for some time. Here, I am especially interested in very young artists. There are a couple of young artists that I like - Brisa Amir and Doktor Karayom. I think they are talented. It's more difficult for me to know and get acquainted with the classical Filipino artists who painted during the 50's and 60's: I don't know much about them. But the young artists, I find them interesting.
Since you travel around a lot as a diplomat, do you bring your art around with you? Some of the works remain in Italy, because I like especially to collect works on paper and generally such works are a bit delicate. And since before coming to the

Say, sky's the limit, is there a piece of art from era that you would love to own? I must say that there is this Stendhal syndrome in art, so it can happen that you have a strong reaction to a work of art. So when I was in New York and I saw Object of desire: The Girl with a Pearl this famous painting Earring by Johannes Vermeer by Vermeer, which is "The Girl with a Pearl Earring." I was there for fifteen minutes, I couldn't move. I was lucky because it usually is in a Netherlands museum. But it just so happened that it was on loan to the Frick Collection in New York when I saw it. It was there and it was really amazing. By the Sea Master colorist and contemporary French artist Pierre-Marie Brisson exhibits his recent series of works at Manila House this month
P
ierre Brisson's work is marked by an enchantment of texture and pattern as well as geographies of color and composition. The artist achieves this by a unique approach to his mixture of materials, on paper and on canvas, where patterns of floral and animal forms are occluded, glossed, distressed and foregrounded to a layered surface that has been enriched with the shapes and glaze of memory and vision. A critic has also described Brisson’s work as a magnified image of a detail in sedimentary rock, which reveals the fragile connections and erosions of remembrance, fossilized however in the language of the moment.

inspiring vision of the sea. This affinity with the sea has shaped his aesthetics, and as a captain of his own boat, he often paints also, while at sea. His work has been described by historian Maibritt Borgen as revelatory of “the ephemeral quality of being human and the fragile language through which humans claim to document as human.”
Brisson spent his childhood in Orléans, France, where he was born. In his 20's he left the academe to pursue his art on his terms and gradually his work received critical notice, first in the art community in Orléans after a solo show at Musée Charles Peguy, then later in Paris, further on to New York and San Francisco through the Franklin Bowles Galleries in the United States. He later showed his works in Japan in a series of exhibits in Tokyo, Osaka and Kobe.
The works for the exhibition Vue de la Mer were made in a studio in Alcoy, south of Cebu, in a hut also facing the sea, akin to his Mediterranean studio in Camargue. These series presents the broad characteristics of color and texture like his previous body of work, but is loaded with the

affective qualities of the sea of Cebu, and the flora that surrounds his place of work. Brisson's work is represented in many prestigious collections in the US and in Europe including museum collections such as the Cobra Museum in Florida, the Jewish Museum in New York and in L’achenbach Foundation in San Francisco. Now Showing: Bertolucci In honor of the late great Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, we present a special screening of one of his most acclaimed films, The Conformist (1970), based on a novel by another Italian great, Alberto Moravia The esteemed Professor Nick Deocampo, a multi-awarded filmmaker, film historian, film literacy advocate, who currently teaches at the U.P. Film Institute College of Mass Communication at U.P. Diliman, will introduce the film and open the floor for discussion after the screening

his 1970 political thriller, The Conformist tells the tale of Marcello Clerici (JeanLouis Trintignant), a member of the secret police in Mussolini's Fascist Italy. He and his new bride, Giulia (Stefania Sandrelli), travel to Paris for their honeymoon, where Marcello also plans to assassinate his former college professor Luca Quadri (Enzo Tarascio), an outspoken anti-Fascist living in exile. But when Marcello meets the professor's young wife, Anna (Dominique Sanda), both his romantic and his political loyalties are tested. "Bernardo Bertolucci's expressionist masterpiece of 1970, The Conformist is the movie that
some moments redolent of Fellini. And it was all framed within an evocation of the frivolous fascistera film-making style derided by Bertolucci's generation as "white telephone" cinema. 2019 got off to a great start at Manila House!
n New Year’s Eve, Members and their families enjoyed a delicious six-course dinner at Bonifacio Dining, with musical entertainment provided by the Bernie Pasamba Jazz Quartet who performed jazzy standards. The night was made even sweeter with the special dessert buffet featuring Manila House’s famous Queso de Bola cheesecake, Chocolate Cake with Caramel Sauce, Food for the Gods, Mango Pannacotta, among others. An extra treat for revellers was Magician Boy Samson, who performed fascinating magic tricks, with volunteers from the audience. Just minutes before the countdown, the rain miraculously stopped, as if to give way for the grand fireworks display courtesy of Bonifacio Global City. Members wore fun new year hats and rejoiced with noisemakers as they chilled the rest of the night away to the electrifying beats of DJ Niño Belza to welcome the new year. 11

Stress Relief
We’ve come to accept that stress is a fact of modern life and yet we are often ill-equipped to deal with it, and how it impacts our work, productivity and well-being. Ugo Guido, our December speaker, suggests a less aggressive, yet effective way to combat stress
I
t may have had a bit of a trippy history, but Transcendental Meditation is an enduring worldwide movement based on ancient Vedic principles, founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, proponent of universal harmony, love and peace. Maharishi, after all, became an international celebrity in the Seventies, during the Flower Power era, when the world’s biggest rock stars, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones among them, began to follow him and imbibe his teachings – TM, as Transcendental Meditation is more popularly known, is neither religion, philosophy nor lifestyle. It is a legitimate meditation technique, the regular twice-daily practice of which can induce deep relaxation and stress relief, as well as sharpen focus, thereby improving concentration, efficiency and productivity. “Stress,” declared Ugo Guido, “is the eidemic of the century. We don’t need stress to perform. We need challenges."
Explaining the benefits of TM
An Italian expat based in the Philippines since 1995, Ugo Guido has been practicing Transcendental Meditation for 32 years. Upon his retirement from the corporate world, he became a certified teacher of Transcendental Meditation from the Maharishi European Reasearch University in Holland in 2012. Last August he was named a member of the Board of the Maharishi International Foundation and the Director for the Philippines.
"Stress is the epidemic of the century" While mindfulness has become a buzzword in today’s world, TM has actually been around a long time, and there are many scientific studies that validate the benefits claimed by practicing this method of meditation. Meditation is now accepted as having great benefits in relieving stress, and research shows its direct reduction of anxiety and levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Transcendental Meditation, which is 13

considered a progression for meditators wanting a deeper experience and even more profound results, also has a strong research evidence base a reduction of stress, depression and anxiety on a physiological and psychological basis are indicated, amongst many other benefits to health and well-being. Guido emphasized that TM is a technique. It’s a simple, natural, effortless technique practiced 20 minutes twice each day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. The TM technique allows your active mind to easily settle inward, through quieter levels of thought, until you experience the most silent and peaceful level of your own awareness — pure consciousness. Manila House held a political forum last January 14 and invited some senatorial hopefuls to present their platforms. Their positions are summarized below: Question: What would you do in your position, especially when it calls for a critical collaboration, with the current administration what would you do differently? What would you fiscalize? What would you support? Samira Gutoc (LP): "For me as a woman, I'm very keen on budget oversight because I feel that much of the money that is spent for conflict in Mindanao could have been spent more on basic social services. And I feel that the two million pesos that was spent on the Marawi war could have been spent a lot on needed funds for health and sanitation."
Harry Roque (PRP): "I have supported the President and I continue to do so, but I have served in Congress and I have used the power to promote those that are close to my heart including human rights. Every cabinet member was actually relieved when I joined the cabinet because that meant that they would be spared from my questioning. As far as independency is concerned, I think that I have proven through my actions that while I support the President, I can be independent."

It tells the story of a weak-willed Italian man who becomes a fascist flunky and goes abroad to arrange the assassination of his old teacher, now a political dissident. The esteemed Professor Nick Deocampo, a multi-awarded filmmaker, film historian, film literacy advocate, who currently teaches at the U.P. Film Institute College of Mass Communication at U.P. Diliman, will introduce the film and open the floor for discussion after the screening.

VUE DE LA MER An Exhibition by Pierre-Marie Brisson Master colorist and contemporary French artist Pierre Marie Brisson (b. 1955) exhibits his recent series of works at Manila House, created in Alcoy, south of Cebu, in a hut facing the sea, similar to his Mediterranean studio in the Camargue. These series presents his signature broad characteristics of color and texture, but is loaded with the affective qualities of the sea of Cebu, and the flora that surrounds his place of work.
