From December 5th, we’ll be taking over Independent’s Room2 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9pm - late (with more days to follow), to bring you the best tunes played ANYWHERE in the city, courtesy of resident DJs Ju-lea and Jarvis. We’ll also be spicing things up a little bit with guest DJ slots and some top drawer local bands and touring acts from outside the NorthEast playing blistering live sets.

Maybe it’s the cold weather, quite possibly it’s the credit crunch. Whatever the cause of it, apathy in Sunderland has reached epic proportions. November’s issue of Manifesto was scrapped due to a lack of sponsorship, and our reader’s poll has been binned as a result of the chronic indifference shown to it by YOU, the general public. However, in the face adversity, we’ve rallied the troops and brought you, what we think is, our best issue to date. It’s brimming with quality features on Billy Bloodaxe, Ward 10 and our very own songs of the year list.

Merry Christmas everyone. Keep on keeping on and we’ll see you very early in 2009.

Sublime, nerdy space pop from one of the few surving bands from the “Sunderland is the new …….” era. We detect elements of krautrock and The Beach Boys in there, as well as more than a sprinkling of Super Furry Animals.

This blast from the past is just over two minutes of pop-punk perfection.

So good it’s back on the Manifesto Djs’ play list five years after its release. Lately it’s been all change in the TAV camp, but hopefully they’ll be back with their third LP next year.

Tom Waits Closing Time, it sounds like he’s trying to get the piano drunk and is preempting having a broken heart. It’s a fucking classy record and I can’t think of a finer piece of work. I’ve also discovered The Ricky Spontane who are a Fats obsessed psychedelic doo wop band based in Paris via Merseyside.

wHAT YOU READING? Just finished Papillion by Henri Chariere. The fact it’s amazingly written is one thing but it’s quite another that this story is absolutely true. It’s a bit like a boys own novel only true. I’ve also just re-read Ask The Dust by John Fante which is the acid test for Bukowski name droppers everywhere.

wHAT YOU Watching?

I’m still and always have been a little obsessed with Nuts in May, a play by Mike Leigh about an anal social worker on a camping trip. That summery does not do this piece of work justice. It’s insane that later Mike Leigh put NAKED out, very different films.

wHAT YOU going to?

Lethal Quizzle at The Ivy House every Wednesday so I can make sarcastic remarks to people who I rather like. Then off to Louis’s to make the world a safer place to live.

Ideally though I’d like to take a gaggle of Amazonians to Sting’s house to bother that ballbag without invitation to see how he likes it, silent genius or not!

WHAT YOU Listening to?

Recently I’ve been buying lots of music that I’ve always wanted to but just never had the time, money to buy or inclination. Those albums would include ‘Grace’ by Jeff Buckley, ‘Glasvegas’, by Glasvegas (who would have thought) and ‘Poses’ by Rufus Wainwright. Not to denigrate the former two albums but it’s the later which stands out the most in its delivery, its production and the performer’s song writing skills

WHAT YOU Reading?

I’ve been reading ‘The Colossus’ by Sylvia Plath, which a friend of mine bought me for my birthday. Plath has a graphic imagination evident in poems such as ‘Cut’ and although her imagery is at times explicit, it is always apt.

WHAT YOU Watching?

Last week i rented ‘Son of Rambow’; It is a ‘coming of age’ story set in the early 80’s. I was extremley impressed, and it is worth seeing if only for the two lead performances.

I also watched ‘The Colour Purple’ last weekend, which the adaptation of Alice Walker’s hugely emotive and influential 1983 novel. It was well paced and sensitively written, which does justice to it’s source while opening out the story to involve the viewer. ?

WHERE YOU Going to?

On my days off from work and my band ‘City In Flames’ i’ve been going through Newcastle. They have started a rock night on Wednesdays at ‘Sea Nightclub’, which this week saw a DJ set from ‘The Automatic’ that was surprisingly worth seeing. I’m also off to see ‘Glasvegas’ at Digital in December where they’ll be promoting their new Christmas album.

I’ve been listening to my usual electro faves like Peaches and Miss Kittin. I love anything on Modular Records so I’ve also been hammering the new Ladyhawke album lately and the new compilation that Jarvis did for the car with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Iggy, Fleetwood Mac and loads of other classics.

WHAT YOU Reading?

Just finished Man In The Dark, Paul Auster’s new novel, it’s ok but not up to his usual excellent standard. I’m looking forward to the new David Mitchell whenever it comes out, I love his novels Ghostwritten and Number 9 Dream. I got Taschen’s Cinema Now book for my birthday last month and I’m slowly working my way through it.

WHAT YOU Watching?

I really enjoyed Following by Christopher Nolan, the director who made Memento. I can never get enough of Spanish Director Pedro Almodavar, I’ve got his films Kika and Matador put aside to watch when I get a spare couple of hours.

WHERE YOU Going to?

I’ll definitely be attending Billy Bloodaxe’s single launch at The White Room on November 16th. I love his stuff. The first time I saw him live he blew me away. Real dirty electro just how I like it.

Im constantly listening to music be it old or contempary throughout the day from the moment i wake up to the moment i go to bed and the artists ive been digging lately are as follows: Anoraak, Grouper, Broadcast Sea, Nomo, Harvey Milk, Joker, . . . . . etc etc. Just the standard independent alternative music really. Do a google search and you will come up with the goods for most of those ive mentioned.

WHAT YOU Reading?

I just finished a book by Ocatvio Paz called - One Earth, Four Or Five Worlds.

Octavio writes brilliantly about colliding ideologies. On a more profound serious note though im currently reading ‘ The Rock Bible’ anyone worth their salt should own and cherish this ‘Bible’. Its hilarious and i cant get enough of it. Essential!!

WHAT YOU Watching?

The Presidential election is what im totally fascinated with at the moment. Its just soo wild in my opinion. America could have its first ever black President, which is long long over due. And the hate speeches the Republicans have been using to avoid losing this elections has been unreal. You couldnt make it up. Wow..

Going to? “ Im currently debating a move abroad. Whereabouts i will probably be spending the rest of my money going to see gigs every night in the crazy city of Amsterdam. The plus sides of all this is that i will probably lose lots of weight due to my speed/whizz intake. Breaking Bands ----------------------------------------------------------This section is dedicated to giving new bands the chance to tell us all about themselves in there own words.

Crown Ether

Crown Ether (originally Subterraneans) formed in 2003 in the dingy streets of Sunderland, based around the musical nucleus of drummer Lindsey Rowell. When the band put out a myspace ad for a guitarist/bass-player, the were greeted one sunny Sunday by Phil Bailes, who had been attracted by the “hard to pigeon-hole” nature of the music that had greeted him on their myspace page. Though Phil himself still to this day is happiest channelling the early 90’s quiet/loud alternative music dynamic, his “everything from Abba to Zappa” mentality meant he slotted right into the band.

With the departure of a singer and guitarist, Lindsey and Phil decided not to become another White Stripes and began a rebuilding process that would find them their musical kindred spirits. Perez BugbyAinsworth, a multi-talented music teacher, was introduced via a mutual friend, and brought in to supply keys (and just about any other instrument to be fair!). Then when it looked like the long-winded search for a singer would reflect the cliché of many a fledgling band, they found Kirsty Walker, a self-confessed “psychedelic child of the sixties” who bowled them over with a recorded audition piece before even meeting up.

Once ensconced in the studio, the band’s very different musical elements began to click together to form a potent compound. With Kirsty’s classic Grace Slick tinged vocals, Perez’s all encompassing musical atmospherics, Phil’s determination to write “something epic”, and Lindsey patent pending gothic surf style, Crown Ether represent a varied, yet focused musical picture; a sonic kaleidoscope if you will.

Roughly one year ago three lads from Sunderland were enjoying a night out and inevitably, betwixt the beer and the women, conversation got around to music. After much arguing about influences, geniuses and seminal album releases, the one thing they agreed on was that no one recent was making music they wanted to listen to. In a somewhat inebriated state that night these three lads formed a band and organised a good old fashioned jam.

Robbie, Paul, Gibson and Josh began practicing Robbie’s songs and brought together their wide range of influences to produce upbeat tunes infused with northern passion that rock and roll in the truest Sunday Best sense.

One year on Sunday Best, as they were named, have been likened to Stereophonics, Oasis and the Kings of Leon for their huge chorus driven sound and honest, direct approach. Great song-writing talent has awarded them an enthusiastic reception from the man in the street.

Continually playing to wider audiences and larger venues through the north, the band are on a mission to showcase their sound further afield.

All that’s left

All That’s Left was born from the remains of failed past bands. Originally just a name and an idea ATL has now evolved to where they are today.

Consisting of singer and rhythm guitarist Laurence, lead guitarist Dauber, bassist Scott and drummer Nick the north-east based band started rehearsing during the summer of 2008 and have been hard at work ever since. In the short time since the quartet has been together they’ve created their own style of punk-rock music and recorded a three track demo. With this strong start ATL are now setting out to show audiences up and down the UK what makes them so unique from the rest of the pack.

With a mounting gig list ATL are now looking forward to doing what they are all about and what they do best; play their unique blend of music to anyone who is willing to listen.

Shogun Assassin

After not much longer than a year together Shogun Assassin have managed to perfect a deliciously funky sound in a way that totally encapsulates their musical objective. Many bands take years meandering in and out of different styles, failing at half arsed attempts to find a perfect fit. Shogun Assassin, however, seem to have chosen a bold funky rock sound that they pull off very well and have no intentions of budging from. They rock a style so unique that in the first few seconds of any track you know immediately who you’re listening to.

Their rap influence is a constant pulse throughout Shogun Assassin’s music and a welcome change on the scene in Sunderland. Listening to everything from old to new school has enabled them to dabble freely in a variety of styles and techniques. From the psychedelic dirty beats of the Beastie Boys to the older than old school genius of Public Enemy and Run DMC, Shogun Assassin extract and expand on the world of options rap music holds. Even showing likeness to more modern rock and trap blends like NERD and Rage Against the Machine, they have the groove and soul of one genre fused with the ferocity and energy of another.

Funk is another factor which puts Shogun Assassin up there with the more unique bands in Sunderland. Not an easy one to pull off but, executed well, can have an incredible effect. And Shogun Assassin do it well. Their music is constantly tipping the hat to the late great James Brown and experimenting with the cool funky sounds of The Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s dripping with attitude and their piping hot bass lines are nothing short of astounding.

What seems strange is that Showgun Assassin are one of the most interesting bands in our city but their style of music is not stereotypically a popular one these days. The funk rock thing, to be fair, is kind of over but these lads refuse to give up the fight. They continue to make music that is exciting and unique for Sunderland whilst portraying a message about what they do. They clearly don’t care how the times are changing because they know what they want to play and they know what they’re good at.

And that substance is what makes it work.

So whether you’re old school, new school, enjoy rocking out or gangster rapping, you’ll probably find something you like in Shogun Assassin.

The Music Collective, based at the Shiney Row Campus of City of Sunderland College is an initiative which provides full-time students of the College with free rehearsal facilities, studio time and advice from industry professionals.

This year’s collective comprises of eight local bands (although those still wishing to join are more than welcome) all at different stages of development; the only stipulation is that each group must perform original compositions. Each group has access to qualified staff, a rehearsal room equipped with a full PA, guitar and bass amps; drum kits and keyboards. When the musicians and staff feel that their songs are ready, they then move into studio to record a CD. Thethe man behind the spellbound EP and one of our

favourite mixes so far this year joins us at Ward10.

After Christmas the collective will invite guest speakers from across the industry to give talks ranging from making a living in the music business Marcus Worgull has been one of the leading deep to gig promotion and merchandising. These sessions are free and open to any full-time students, regardless of whether they actually play an house DJ’s in Germany for over 10 years and is part of instrument or not, and will hopefully cumulate in the formation of an independent record label. Although the College plans to support the label, the Innervisions crew Dixon, Henrik Schwartz it will be entirely student run and willalongside release and promote material recorded by members of the Collective.

Worgull meanwhile works predominantly with straight 4/4-Beats, his productions and DJ-sets have musical depth which reveal his diverse black music background. Worgull’s musical development began in the late 80’s in his hometown Wuppertal, Germany. He found a record store there full of unordinary vinyl discs from diverse musical directions and trends: Rare Soul- and Jazzgrooves as well as the hottest hip-hop and house. 15-year-old Worgull was a prime customer - and spent most of his pocket money there. The store, named “Groove Attack”, moved to Cologne later and is today run by Marcus Worgull.

The only other place to hear such music during that time, was the one club in Wuppertal:”Beatbox” .

DJs like Gilles Peterson or Norman Jay had their first German Gigs there. Little Worgull snuck into the club and experienced, for the first time, how a good DJ can take the crowd on a journey into different worlds of music. Worgull’s enthusiams for black music was born - and so was the decision to become a DJ himself.

For quite some time, his sound has been heavily influenced by broken beats. Eventually, Worgull has changed his focuses to intelligent, soulful but danceable house - at the edge of being techno.

Influenced by the majestic house of the “Prescription” label or classical Detroit-Techno, he developed his own style. Besides running a record store, landing national and international gigs, remix assignments and of course raising his son Ole, Worgull produces new tracks which will be released soon on Innervisions.

Expect deep house, Detroit techno and upfront tracks and re-edits courtesy of Marcus and best mates Dixon and Henrik Shwartz.

If you don’t know what the Sunderland Music Forum (SMF) is by now, where have you been?! But I’m all for inclusivity and demystification, so I’ll indulge your ignorance...

SMF is a group of musicians, promoters, managers, venue staff and music lovers that meets once a month in an attempt to make Sunderland a better place to make and consume music. And absolutely anyone interested in the local music scene is welcome – nay, encouraged – to attend...

Over the past few months, the forum has organised a string of gigs and has been working on other diverse projects such as a database of music industry contacts and legal poster points around the city where gigs etc can be advertised without fear of the boys in blue.

Last month’s meeting saw a great turnout and discussions of local radio coverage of what’s going on in the scene, and the various other projects the members are working on. We met in the library for the monthly meeting and what transpired could either be seen as a huge positive for the group or a massive negative (my opinion lies somewhere in between).

The meeting included a vague discussion about Sunderland City Council’s Music Strategy and what it could mean for the music scene in general and the forum itself. We also learnt that the council is hoping to employ someone to specifically oversee the music development and to work closely with the SMF. We also heard from Campus (formally Manor Quay) about what’s going on down there for live music and how they will be supporting local live music if the current bookings prove successful.

The majority of the meeting was taken up discussing the formalisation of the SMF – adopting a constitution, creating a management committee, etc. And it was agreed that the group should, indeed, be formally constituted if it is to continue to grow and achieve its aims. It was also decided that once there is a constitution in place, the chance to become a ‘member’ of the SMF should be given and these members would be regular attendees of meetings whom have the ability to vote on matters.

Some people might think that rushing the organisation process means that the forum can focus on what it is there to do – not just talk about it. And, yes, this is true. But these decisions are very important and if rushed could cause a lot of problems in the future.

Only time will tell...

The next meeting takes place at 6pm on Wednesday 10th December at Sunderland City Library, Fawcett Street – all are welcome. The meeting will be followed by an informal networking opportunity and gig at The White Room with The Generals and Rayne from 7.30pm, Free Entry.

lThe good people at NAKED have always provided a curve ball of an evening. Never content with the ho hum mentality of tin pot promoting and the forcing of pasty faced bands on to a stage to an empty room. NAKED are puling out all the stops again and this time in the name of Christmas. There are certain mainstays to anyone’s Christmas day….wetting yourself when you see your grafter, Noel Edmonds taking some kid to Disney Land before his heed falls off and the Top of the Pops Christmas special.

Well unfortunately according to rumours, this year will be the first year that there will be no televised TOTP on Christmas day. Well fear not as NAKED is bringing the ridiculous atmosphere and enthusiasm of Top of the Pops to you. On Monday the 22nd NAKED presents the Top of the Pops Christmas special. True to the studio production the full shebang will be filmed inclusive of inappropriately aged presenters, camera hogging teenagers in dungarees oh and apparently there will be some musical performances. Appearing on the night is possibly the best showcase of local talent seen this year. The Week That Was, B>E?AK, Razzmatazz Lorry Excitement, The Spheres, Indoor fireworks, Frankie and the Heartstrings, Trev Gibb, The Big Oakes and The Young Cartwrights are all set to appear. Now you would be hard pushed to get a Christmas present of this calibre for £5 at Argos, although there are some canny nice new Star Wars figures. The evening will be compared by the intriguingly mysterious Dave “Pearl” Harper and Fifties Frankie who I am sure will be as charming as the are dashing on the evening. We have also been promised that all the bands appearing over the 2 stages on the night will be furnishing us with a festive song of their choosing although garish charity shop knitwear remains optional. I have attended NAKED nights religiously over the past 4 years and have never been disappointed by the line up but what really makes the difference is the attention to detail to furnish every member of the audience with a show as opposed to a tin pot gig which often leave a completely neutral taste in your mouth.

The bands are the best we have, the price is right, you get to be in a film but the bottom line is that once you have been to a NAKED night you go back and you look forward to the next. Don’t let yourself miss this one, this really is the best we have and as such mobilise yourselves and remember what Christmas used to be like (not that i am suggesting that you spent you Christmases at Independent like a Homeless or owt) Words - Dave Harper

Billy Bloodaxe

It’s been a crazy, rollercoaster ride of a year for William Morris, aka Billy Bloodaxe. As 2008 dawned, it looked as if him and his band, Coldseat, were set for exciting times. The previous year had seen them gain a considerably large following, drawn in by the Coldseat double whammy of enthralling, incendiary live shows and perfect, crystal cut recordings. Support slots with such luminaries as Crystal Castles, Tiger Picks, These New Puritans and Late Of The Pier had also built up a bit of curiosity with a few quite prominent dance-ish labels. It looked like Coldseat were about to conquer the world and then...they split up. So what exactly happened?

“Live, everything seemed perfect, we each had our own defined roles and stuck to them”, say Billy, describing his relationship with Coldseat partner Gus, “but when it came to writing together and drawing on our influences, we were a million miles apart. We just couldn’t work together in the studio and decided, rather than falling out, we’d split the band”. They split at the beginning of

the summer and Billy went solo almost immediately, first under the moniker Strong Legs, before changing to the Viking influenced Billy Bloodaxe.

Using his I-pod full of backing tracks, he wasted no time in getting back to doing live shows. He also, in ‘Posieden Vs Pandora’ and ‘No Regrets’, recorded some of his best ever material.

So what exactly does the future hold in store for Mr Bloodaxe? “I plan to get one or two band members in to beef up my live set. I’m also hoping to collaborate on a track or two with The Anglo Form and do some remixes for them and Widows.

I’ve also had a bit of interest from a few different people wanting to remix my tracks, which sounds really exciting. I think 2009’s going to be a really good year”. Billy also has a few showcase gigs lined up for record labels where he hopes to impress enough to be able to get a national release out sometime in the next year.

Billy Bloodaxe release his debut single, Posieden Vs Pandora at the end of November and plays several live shows throughout December including The Library in Leeds on December 5th and Manifesto’s Christmas party on December 21st at Words - Steph Murray

Review 2008

Words - Phil Jarvis

Here’s our thoughts on 2008’s songs of the year. The chances are that you’ll happily agree with some and vehemently disagree with quite a few more. If you wanna have your say, send your thoughts, lists or whatever to manifestomagazine@yahoo.co.uk.

So, here it is, the Manifesto top 15 tracks of 2008...

1. The Futureheads - The Beginning Of The Twist After 2006’s News and Tributes we weren’t holding our collective breath when it came to This Is Not The World, The Futureheads’ third studio album, but it turned out to be awesome. This was the first single released off the album and it just managed to scrape into the UK top 20. A tight, expertly produced (by Youth) piece of pogo-pop-punk that’ll inevitably become an indie disco classic.

2. MGMT - Kids Where’ve we heard that electro-y keyboard intro before? That’s been the question on the lips of everyone in the office all year. MGMT are THE breakthrough band of the year, of that there is no doubt. Kids is stompy, atmospheric, as catchy as a cold and one of the most amazing tracks we’ve ever aurally ingested.

3. Billy Bloodaxe - Poseidon Vs Pandora The glorious Coldseat have split up? So what, that just means we get Billy Bloodaxe all by his cute little self. Poseidon… is an electro pop gem, as funky as Chicago house from the 80s and as catchy as a Human League hit single. More more more please, Mr Morris.

4. The Deadwoods - Boogie MC This killer indie anthem, fused with a Charva-tastic middle bit, was the wonderfully weirdest thing we heard all year. With killer riff, killer rap and killer beats, it became The Deadwoods’ signature tune and stamped their mark, as the young upstarts most likely to make it big, on the public of Sunderland.

Features -----------------------------------------------------------5. The Young Cartwrights - Private Eye Another tune with a killer riff, this time from the scouse influenced scally-skifflers The Young Cartwrights.

Lead songwriter Phil Houghton obviously has an outstanding record collection - here showing off his knowledge of Love, The Shadows and a thousand other off the wall influences.

6. The Spheres - Phoenix Soul We know this is an old track but we had to include in this list because we heard it so many time at The Spheres’ live shows this year. It’s a dirty, deep-fried, sourthern soul heartbreaker and we love it.

7. Estelle - American Boy Pure pop music doesn’t get much better than this number one hit from the UK singer. Produced by Kanye West, with a couple of lines rapped by him in the intro and verses, American Boy was easily the best commercial record of the year.

8. Dizzee Rascal Ft. Calvin Harris - Dance Wiv Me The floorfiller of the year. It was mind blowing to see the carnage this caused in clubs. Not one person could claim it didn’t make them shake their ass.

9. Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire There you go, we did it. We put it in. A monstrous number 1 single that sealed KOL’s new position at the top of the MOR premier league. That’s entertainment.

10. M.I.A. -Paper Planes Missed the first time round, this eventually ended up selling over a million copies in the USA. Due to it’s inclusion on the Pineapple Express soundtrack. The ierdest hit of the year, what other track can lay claim to having gunshots used as percussion.

11. Ashes Of Iron - Beast The feel good hit of the summer? Beast was a monstrous slab of QOTSA influenced stoner rock ‘n’ roll, of that there’s no doubt. Ashes’ live shows were amazing, incendiary and, without a doubt, the best we saw in 2008.

12. The Small Screen Light Show - I’m Too In Love This killer track from the Seaham duo had just about every essential ingredient required by a classic indie-pop stormer - angular, stop/start guitars, crisp handclaps, sweet as sugar boy/girl guitars and a hook laden chorus. Their trip to Manchester’s In The City this autumn raised their profile to sky high limits.

The Week That Was - The Good Life Peter Brewis, Sunderland’s very own music tzar, maintains his prolific output and keeps up his excellent Field Music form with this polished piece of pop heaven. The album was an all out stormer too.

14. Late Of The Pier - Space And Woods Sounds like a Gary Numan/Klaxons mash-up. These Donnington wierdos are the heirs apparent to the nu-rave throne. Bathroom Gurgle was good but this pips it to the post.

15. The Anglo Form - Wolves Angular electro-rock doesn’t get much better than this savage, defiant cut from the Sunderland trio.

Definitely one of the find of the last twelve months. We reckon they’re gonna take over the planet in the next couple of years

And, just to flex our massive negativity muscle, and fill a bit more space, we thought we’d through in 3 tracks from this year that we absolutely hated.

1. Oasis - The Shock Of The Lightning Killing any good will they built up with their first two albums, the two rent-a-knob, rock dinosaurs return with their backing band and a single Feeder would be embarrassed to put out. Ooh, roll on June at the SOL.

2. Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire “What?”, we hear you say, “but that was in the best tracks list“. Ouch! Sorry about that. The most requested song in our DJs’ history, we thought we’d better squeeze it in just to appease all you bland indie-rock loving goons out there. A U2 for the 21st century. Up the new punk revolution, we say.

3. Nickelback - Rockstar Please make it stop. Look up the word ubiquitous in the dictionary and this hideous piece of crap’ll start playing. In 2008 it was everywhere - carpet adverts, crap pubs, on a never-ending loop in every single taxi in Sunderland. Come the revolution they’ll be the first against the wall.

Sunday Best 4 Track Demo Sunday Best play the type of foot to the floor, good time rock ‘n’ roll that Kelly Jones or Noel Gallacher would be proud to purvey. Their sound is British through and through, with nods to 60s/mod inspirations like The Kinks and The Who. Their musicianship is at an extremely adept level and their song writing craft is even better. Standout track ‘Jaguar’ has tinges of Iggy Pop’s ‘Lust For Life’ and would go down well in any indie disco. The next strongest track ‘Girl About Town’, sounds like a lost classic, it’s wistful lyrics wrapping around the hookiest of choruses. All in all a simply splendid debut demo - PJ

Maxwell Panther All Ages And Body Types The eleven tracks on this compact disc are ultra lo-fi recordings. On listening to ‘Down And Inside Out’, you can’t help but think that Maxwell is heavily, heavily influenced by Syd Barrett’s post Pink Floyd solo work. ‘That Was You Then, This Is You Now’ wouldn’t be out of place on one of those late 60s Bowie compilations where he’s trying to sound all weird and psychedelic. ‘Glass Eyed Girl’ is probably the most accomplished of the eleven tracks, with its lush guitars and damaged and yearning vocals. This one’s definitely worth delving into if you’re a fan of off the wall, leftfield singer songwriters - PJ

Billy Bloodaxe Posiedon Vs Pandora Released at the end of November, Billy Bloodaxe’s debut single has all the hallmarks of a classic electro track. Funky bassline, big fat beats and filthy synth riffs combine with 80s style vocals to make this a mamouth of a song. - PJ

The C90S 5 Track Demo The C90s are Alan Patourec, a multi talented multi instrumentalist. The five tracks on this disc cover a multitude of styles – ‘Don’t Wanna Know’ takes in a 60s beat combo rhythm, while ‘They Didn’t Say’ borrows a great deal from early 80s electro with its quirky bleeps, synths and Phil Collins/Bruce Springsteen style ‘massive production’ drums. All the tracks are underpinned and driven by a chugging MOR rock guitar and raw, aggressive vocals. If there’s a flaw with the CD, it’s to be discovered in the lyrics which at times come over as somewhat contrived and more than a little bit pretentious. - PJ 24 manifesto

Kalidah Detracting from the music somewhat, here’s a band with an interesting take on things. Their biography and CD inlay is full of beautifully written metaphors and analogies. Reading more like a well-crafted story than information on the band, it makes a nice and well-needed change from the usual bland “four northern lads on a mission” biog that seems to be the staple of most bands today.

The music, continuing this theme, flows together with harmonious melodies and subtle twists of melancholy – though, in a good way. Stand out track for me, Repairs – ambient and verging on quiet, yet builds up to a beautiful ending. - SG

Goldenman

GOLDENMAN

The Golden Man is a 1954 science fiction short story, by Philip K. Dick. The story is set in a postapocalyptic future, where the existence of potentially powerful mutants has become a reality. So says the opening few lines on the band’s Myspace page (if anyone uses Myspace any more), and goes some way to providing an introduction to this band’s sound. They also state “we make indie music – electronically” which hits the nail on the head. Each track is backed by a drum machine and is fused with a combination of eerie synth and guitar sounds. To compliment the accompaniment, the tracks are brought to life by both female and male charismatic vocals. Listen to track two, ‘Kissingatthedisco’ for a vocal that really impresses and grows on you each time. - SG

Kinkane

K I N K A N E

‘Still Feel The Same’ is the soon-to-be-released single, from the album due out in 2009. This band were signed by the first record company to hear them, B-Unique (owned by Warner Music), and were whisked off to LA for album recording sessions. Envious you might be, but it isn’t pure luck that got them to where they are (or are about to be). The track sounds polished from the off, with lyrics and melodies combining to produce the fantastic rousing chorus that is destined to become stuck in every listener’s head. The basis, and core part, of a song should be the vocals and lyrics, and this song proves that.

B>E>A>K, UU, Pure Graft, Young Livers @ The Basement, Nile Street, 09/10/08 Russel Price

Got a text: “BEAK are playing with Young Livers (gainesville FL, no idea recs), Pure Graft and U-U @ the basement Nile Street Sunderland. 4 quid in byob (brig your own booze)”, rang the lads, got some cans and turned up.

The gig was in the basement of the building and reminded me of the last bit in the Blair Witch Project where the lass in the bobble hat runs down the stairfs and her mate is standing in the corner. Instead of a bloke standing in the corner though there was amps, a drum kit and some guitars. And some birds, BEAK are mint and I hadn’t seen them in ages and when they kicked into “get ur freak (beak) on” i knew they were still mint. Trumpets, bird noises and woodpecker was an excellent start. Go to www.myspace. com/beaktastic “untitled” on their myspace is a lovely song, reminds me of Jim O’ Rourke.

U-U were next. I’d heard they were good from a few people and they didn’t disappoint. I wont do the usual like this band and this band in a food-mixer on top of a washing machine crap. What i will do is say i enjoyed them, they were good, you should definitely see them the next time they play.

Pure Graft- “we’re pure graft from the Toon” is what the bearded frontman said and then they begun. This band were made for basement gigs, there seemed to be about ten of them, i couldn’t tell as a couple of the guitarists were out of view but it didn’t matter as pure graft are pure punk rock and played purely fast. I would have liked to have seen them in a bigger venue and without people holding up their fucking MASSIVE camera phones in front of the band obscuring the view. Can’t have everything though. I’m definitely buying one of their t-shirts next time too.

I’ll be honest i didn’t really watch The Young Livers. The band looked like they were trying really hard but i couldn’t hear anything so i had my last can and left.

All in all it was a good night in a weird venue and if you get a chance go to a gig at Nile Street you should. Do not however buy your cans from that shop down from the Jamesons. £1 can? pure rip off.

The Week That Was, The Maybes, B>E>A>K @ Campus. 1/11/08 Josh Cockroft B>E>A>K are fast becoming one of my favourite bands in Sunderland. Never failing to give a good performance, they create dramatic instrumentals that are unlike anything else being played by bands at the moment.

The Maybes play pretty standard indie pop which I didn’t much care for. It wasn’t until their last song, a 10 minute plus epic instrumental, that I really started to enjoy them. In my opinion they should take a leaf out of B>e>a>k>s book and stop singing.

The Week That Was, the band that the small crowd are here to see, play their usual flawless set. Some of the songs really do remind me of Jeff Wayne’s War of The Worlds, with the use of xylophones and drums, or maybe that’s just me. The venues tiny crowd, (or maybe the venues massive capacity), really took away from the atmosphere that TWTW could have created. Still they played great, with the riffs sticking in my head for ages.

Reviews -----------------------------------------------------------Indoor Fireworks, The Anglo-Form, Our Imaginary Ben. @The White Room 08/10/08 Daniel Clifford Something needs to be done about the CD decks at The White Room. Having organised a gig there and booked CJA from No, Robot, No! to DJ there a few times over the past few weeks it has become very clear that one of the decks skips...skips A LOT. But totally (un)professional to the end CJA carried on throughout the night playing some top quality tunes (what better way to follow Imaginary Ben’s set than with ‘Love shack’?).

Our Imaginary Ben is the lead singer and songwriter of miserablist pop group Our Imaginary Friends. Having found themselves with a lot less members than they used to have, Ben decided to take on the chores of this gig himself. And what a revelation!

Often ‘ramshackle’ is not a strong enough word to describe OIF’s gigs – largely due to line-up difficulties – and that has meant that even those of us following them from an early stage having no real idea how the songs are meant to sound.

But on this outing we heard the core of these beautifully depressing pop gems – an acoustic guitar, a deep croon and a delicate wit.

Following Ben was The Anglo-Form. Having only really seen them at ‘the seafront gig with bad sound’ over the summer, I – again – had no real idea what these lads sounded like. But after this pulsating show I know exactly what they sound like – a brooding electro beat, lacerating guitars and a sneered vocal reminiscent of early-Placebo.

Even the sceptics in attendance couldn’t help getting caught in The Anglo-Form’s wave of dramatic post-punk and pounding beats by set highlight, ‘Wolves’.

To finish a night dominated by dark and intense music that had seen but small glimmers of that Holy Grail called pop, we were treated to a full-frontal view of the damn thing by Seaham’s Indoor Fireworks.

Soaring anthems have never sounded so good than in the hands of Marc Oliver and company. Yes, nearly every song seemed to have a breakdown before the final BIG chorus, but that’s how it’s meant to be...that’s how it’s got to be!

Lovelorn lyrics, fantastic melodies, four-part harmonies, riffs to die for and a lot of banging on the drum. My one problem - where was Grim Fandango?!

But aside from that, another fine show on Indoor Firework’s road to stardom.

Don’t Talk To Me about Love -

There are 3 things and 3 things only. One is perception, two is composure and three is love. We need not concern ourselves with love, whilst there are bricks to be swung it remains a sub heading at best. The people I know/tolerate/respect/despise believe by exposing there limp contrived rhetoric that they somehow become appealing. An artistic manifesto of sorts. The arrogance I can swallow, admire at times. It’s the over thought out stupidity which sticks in my craw. There are manuals, sandwich boards and beacons as bright as ignited magnesium, but you put your faces too close, preventing you for seeing a more rounded bizarre picture. Take Tom Waits for instance. He exists in a state of mind of his own making. His doesn’t have to pander to anything because he has shrugged and refused everything apart from what he holds pure. Listening to a record like Closing Time you get the distinct feeling that you are not at all a consumer or a purchaser of product. It’s a voyeuristic experience, as if you have been given an invitation to listen and that the pleasure is all yours. That is the most beautiful, arrogant ruse I can think of. This record creates subliminal rules irrespective of expectations of how one is to behave on record.

It is the most beautifully arrogant piece of art I own. Stop aspiring to goals set by others and do what is dictated from within.

That’s as direct a mantra as I can offer. No pretence it’s just how I feel. If I could I’d dine all day on raw whores and whiskey.
