This research looks at the impact of Sea level rise (SLR) on the UNESCO listed heritage precinct. It
investigates
various
urban
strategies to tackle Sea Level Rise through based on existing theory and case studies, to develop a series of suitable design proposal to respond to the threat of Sea Level Rise and accompanying storm surges to protect the UNESCO listed heritage precinct of Mumbai.

The threat posed by Sea level rise (SLR), a product of Climate change, has lead to increased instances of extreme weather phenomena. Such extreme weather phenomena accompanied by increased storm surges, have in the past devastated major coastal cities and settlements and will continue to do so in the future.

The Victorian Gothic & Art Deco UNESCO World Heritage Ensemble of Mumbai at risk for permanent inundation due to Sea Level Rise.
The projected global relative sea level rise range by the year 2100 is between 0.45m to 0.82m an annual average of 15 millimetres per degree rise (Stocker et al., 2013), while rise in some coastal areas like Mumbai is to be between 1.5m to 4m (Masson-Delmotte et al., 2013). This will cause major interruption to its socio-economic life (Baumeister, 2021) and create irreparable loss to its UNESCO World Heritage listed Art Deco Precinct.

Museum 2150 Projected Tide level Extreme Scenario with 4m SLR
This design proposal aimed to investigate various urban SLR mitigation strategies to protect the UNESCO World heritage Precinct of Mumbai. These 2150 Projected Adaptation of Restaurant with Tide level Extreme the view of the Sea were categorised, using existing research, as Protect, Scenario with 4m SLR Accommodate, Retreat and Advance to generate various design outcomes. These design approaches allowed for multiple sea level rise scenarios to simulate the end use while creating a combination and adapting them within the time frame of the SLR research to generate meaningful public utility spaces as a respite for residential users within the dense urban fabric. Various existing heritage by-laws were incorporated within the design outcome pramework to not directly intervene within the UNESCO World Heritage building fabric to repect its integrity.

Built in 1906, Ismail Building is a G+4 story, Grade IIA heritage building, stone and reinforced concrete composite load bearing building. The project involved retaining the original load bearing walls and in-situ replacement of the entire concrete core. The stupendous façade character designed in the “Edwardian Baroque” style was restored using industry standard materials and traditional techniques.
