While most 16-year olds were watching their favorite shows, Derrick was watching surgeries. After injuring his knee playing hockey and undergoing his own procedure, he would return to watch his orthopaedic surgeon in action. With that — and after stops at University of Notre Dame and Georgetown University, Orthopaedic Residency at UPMC, and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles — a surgeon was born. Derrick has embraced his long-desired return to his hometown with vigor, affiliating with several area hospitals and surgery centers, and serving as team physician for several local high schools and colleges. When not taking care of his patients he is spending time with
