From The President

A Message from President Michael E. Geisler I am pleased to share this special Donor Impact Report that highlights you, our family of alumni, alumnae, and generous donors, to whom I am enormously grateful. While the view from the Castle this fall is a familiar one—students are on the quad, and the campus is cloaked in autumn hues—we know that this year has been anything but typical. Your support has been vital as we have navigated the challenges of the pandemic and ensured our continued growth at Manhattanville. Thanks to the cooperation and commitment of our entire community, we were able to keep our campus open through the Fall semester. We surveyed all undergraduate students to check how well we are delivering on our promise to provide a robust academic and co-curricular experience this fall. More than a third of our students responded and results show we are doing well overall with student engagement and satisfaction. This bodes well for the Spring semester as we make plans to bring students back in February for a similar mix of remote and in-person classes, events, and activities. This report features donors who actively supported Manhattanville during this pivotal year, including Randy Curato ’81, a member of our Leadership Circle (page 13); first-generation alumna Jennifer Newcomb-Fernandez ’94, PhD, whose monthly gift provides year-round support (page 25); Melissa Brinley Boston ’00, PsyD, associate dean of Student Health and Counseling (SHAC), who supports our students through both her work and her gifts (page 33); and Joan Ricklefs Szoke ’71, a Mother Eleanor O’Byrne Legacy Society donor (page 36), who made a lifetime committment through a bequest and shares why planned giving is so important to Manhattanville. We honor Titsa Fotopulos Pelzman ’49, a graduate of Manhattanville’s original nursing school, whose legacy has come full circle with the opening of the new School of Nursing and Health Sciences and an endowed scholarship established in her name (page 40). I am also pleased to share that the Center for Design Thinking won a prestigious $50,000 grant from the Sara Little Turnbull Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship in design. Finally, I am thrilled to present four new members of our Board of Trustees (page 8): two longtime active alumnae, Alice D. Leahey ’69 and Mary O’Gorman Fay Allan ’67; Anthony Viceroy, CEO of Westmed Medical Group; Austin Purves, a software engineer at Google and former assistant physics professor at Manhattanville; as well as two new additions to the Alumni Board, Danuta Karpinski Wenzel ’76 (page 19) and June Lue Wang ’67 (page 26). I am very grateful for their contributions and dedication to Manhattanville. Our institution has weathered many storms over its 180-year history while staying true to its mission, and I have no doubt that history will repeat itself. With the help of our entire Manhattanville family—students, faculty, staff, parents, friends, trustees, and alumni—we will continue to transform lives and prepare students to make great contributions to society. Meet Our New Trustees

In July, the College appointed four new members to the Board of Trustees, two of whom are longtime, dedicated alumnae of Manhattanville. Our new additions are dynamic leaders in business, tech, finance, and health care.

ALICE D. LEAHEY ’69 IS A RETIRED ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMERCIAL BANKING FOR BANK OF AMERICA and previously worked as a consultant for banking litigation. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Manhattanville. She received her master’s degree in business administration from University of California, Berkley, in 1975. She is an active alumna who is involved with the Manhattanville Class of 1969 Reunion Committee. Her interests include sailboat racing and cruising, power boating, golf and travel, and spending time with family. She owns a 35-foot sailboat named the Grace O’Malley and competes in races and regattas from Newport, CA, to Bermuda. She is a member of the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey and has served as commodore of the yacht club. Alice lives in Venice Beach, CA.

Manhattanville’s commitment to design thinking under the leadership of President Michael Geisler is a giant leap into the 21st century and I am honored to be part of it.”- Mary O’Gorman MARY O’GORMAN FAY ALLAN ’67 is a retired tour guide, a docent emeritus, for the Chicago Architecture Foundation. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Manhattanville and attended graduate school at Northwestern University where she studied journalism. O’Gorman credits Manhattanville for developing and nurturing the foundation of her faith and interest in social justice. Her passions include faith, family, swimming, golf, the architectural history of Chicago—and Notre Dame Football. O’Gorman is an involved alumna and has served as class officer and secretary on the reunion committee and has assisted with the class newsletter. She has hosted several alumni events at her home in Chicago, IL. Originally from Ogdensburg, NY, she currently lives in Chicago with her husband, James Allan III. They have two sons.

AUSTIN PURVES, PHD, IS A SOFTWARE ENGINEER AT GOOGLE. He joined the company in January after serving as assistant professor and chair of the physics department at Manhattanville. He taught physics courses at all levels and redesigned and reinstated the physics major at the College in Fall 2016. His professional interests include undergraduate physics education, integrating STEM and humanities education, and research in theoretical physics. Purves received his Bachelor of Science in physics from the University of New Hampshire and his PhD in physics from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Cortland Manor, NY, with his wife and four young children, including twins who were born in January.

I'm honored to join the Board of Trustees as part of my long-term commitment to our college and our students."- Austin Purves ANTHONY VICEROY IS THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO) OF WESTMED MEDICAL GROUP. Prior to joining Westmed, Viceroy spent ten years at Omnicom Group, one of the world’s largest global marketing and communications organizations. His son graduated from Manhattanville in 2013 with a major in management and a minor in psychology. His daughter is a current first-year student at the College who intends to major in business. Viceroy is a member of the Board of Advisors for New York Medical College and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Westchester County Association, the Bedford Physicians Risk Retention Group, and as a CEO Council Member of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA). Viceroy received his master’s in business administration in global management and corporate finance from Fordham University and his bachelor’s of business administration in public accounting from Iona College. He holds an executive certificate from Cornell University in Healthcare Leadership. He is a certified public accountant (CPA) and a chartered global management accountant. He grew up in the Woodlawn section of the Bronx and is a longtime resident of Pleasantville, NY.

Advocating for

His Alma Mater Randy Curato ’81

Forty years and 800 miles separate Chicago lawyer Randy Curato ’81 from Manhattanville College, but it’s clear that this alumnus has never truly left his alma mater. “I would relive every minute of my college experience there if I could,” said Curato, vice president and senior loss prevention counsel at Attorneys’ Liability Assurance Society Ltd. (ALAS). While Curato knows that he can’t go back in time, he said that the next best thing is helping ensure Manhattanville’s future, and he has done so for almost 20 years. Curato said that he knew Manhattanville was the place for him from the very first time he set foot on campus. He was not only awed by the beautiful castle and campus grounds, Curato remembered how it felt so welcoming. “Everyone was so friendly,” he said, and it seemed that “everybody knew everybody.” At the same time, the College offered easy access to New York City, which was an incredible enticement for Curato, who grew up in a rural town in Maine. “Back then, I arrived at school on a bus—my parents put me on a bus—and I had my backpack and my little

suitcase,” said Curato, chuckling at the thought of it. However, it didn’t take him long to jump into campus life and take advantage of the close-knit community. “You really had a lot of flexibility to create your own path,” said Curato, ticking off different student groups he joined and classes he took—among them, some pre-law courses that were part of a partnership Manhattanville had with New York Law School at the time, which allowed students to graduate in five years with a law degree. “There were so many opportunities that it was kind of like a prelude to what you were going to be doing in real life,” Curato said. Although in the end Curato opted for a traditional four-year degree from Manhattanville, later earning his law degree at the University of Notre Dame, he said that he is forever grateful for the array of courses available to everyone. “I was taking constitutional law my first year!” said Curato. While Curato noted that, of course, times change and the campus along with them—“Do you know there used to be a bar on campus called Sneaky Pete’s?”— he is grateful that the strong sense of community and the emphasis on service, social justice, and liberal arts education remain alive and well. “If I were to create a college experience from the ground up,” said Curato, “I’d create Manhattanville.” Through his annual gifts, he hopes to perpetuate Manhattanville’s commitment to its students well into the future.

Danuta Wenzel ’76

Danuta Karpinski Wenzel ’76 always found comfort on Manhattanville’s campus. Following in the footsteps of her sister, Irina Karpinski ’72, Wenzel was drawn to the College by the tight-knit community. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history, Wenzel worked in the sales department of Bailey, Banks & Biddle jewelers, in Philadelphia, before starting a job with the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC. Wenzel married her former classmate Arthur Wenzel ’76, MAT ’04, and moved back to New York to work for Texaco, just down the road from Manhattanville. After starting a family, the Wenzels both obtained their realtor’s licenses and have been working in real estate ever since. Some thirty-five years after graduation, Danuta Wenzel sold a condominium to one of her husband’s previous MAT professors! Wenzel said that in her first year serving on the Alumni Board, she hopes to develop creative ways to “support and promote” the College, particularly during this difficult year. “I hope that we can get back to normal,” she said, noting that she is looking forward to doing whatever she can to help and to participating in any positive changes being made at Manhattanville in the future.

From First Generation

to Future Generations Jennifer Newcomb-Fernandez ’94 When Jennifer Newcomb-Fernandez ’94, PhD, decided to set up a recurring monthly gift to Manhattanville six years ago, it was done, in part, as a matter of convenience (“It was just easier”). These consistent payments, however, also reflect the steady dividends Newcomb-Fernandez said that she has received on her undergraduate education; an education, she noted, that would not have been possible without financial assistance. As a first-generation college alumna, Newcomb-Fernandez knows the profound impact donors can have on students’ lives. “My parents did not have a lot of money, and I think they had wanted to go [to college] themselves, but it didn’t work out,” she said. Fortunately, Newcomb-Fernandez received a generous financial aid package from Manhattanville, which allowed her to enroll at the College and pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology—a decision that helped set a course for her future. And by any measure, it has been a successful journey. After graduating from Manhattanville, Newcomb-Fernandez went on to earn her PhD in neuroscience at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She then went on to work in the biomedical research industry for several years before starting her own business as a writer and consultant (Newcomb Scientific, LLC) for the medical, scientific, and pharmaceutical industries, managing grant proposals, editing articles for peer-reviewed publications, designing protocols for clinical trials, and writing patient informed consents. Most recently, Newcomb-Fernandez completed a National Institutes of Health grant proposal on COVID testing for Stanford University. Looking at her career arc, Newcomb-Fernandez said that she can’t help but feel grateful for Manhattanville’s support, which she noted was much more than monetary; it came in the form of a welcoming, thriving, cohesive community, thanks to small class sizes and talented faculty. In particular, Newcomb-Fernandez credited psychology professor Anthony Santucci, PhD, for helping her foster critical thinking skills and gain work experience. In fact, Santucci was instrumental in NewcombFernandez securing an internship at the Bronx Veterans Hospital, where she was able to do hands-on lab work. When asked if she still kept in touch with Professor Santucci, she replied, “Well, he attended my wedding!” Coming full circle, Newcomb-Fernandez is currently shepherding her own son through the college application process, which she said reinforces how fortunate she feels today. “I am very blessed that we are financially stable, because I know my parents were not,” she said. “Now I’m at the point where I’d like to give back to as many people as I can.”

When June Lue Wang ’67, MSc, was a high school student in the Caribbean, she set her sights on Manhattanville because it was her favorite teacher’s alma mater. Wang reflected that she was fortunate to have received a full scholarship to attend, and at her 50th reunion, she wrote that her life’s journey was one akin to the transformation of a chrysalis to a butterfly. I always felt that Manhattanville was such a good second home for me” she said. After graduation, Wang accepted a job as a computer systems engineer at IBM in New Jersey. Later, she became full-time mother of three before re-entering the workforce and going on to earn an MSc in computer science at Stevens Institute of Technology in 1986. In 2001, Wang secured a job as a project management professional in the aerospace defense industry in Southern California, where she held high security clearance. She retired in 2016. Wang greatly enjoys giving back to society, and in addition to her new role on the Alumni Board, she volunteers locally in many roles at her church and as a docent at the Getty Museum, in Los Angeles, California. Wang hopes to start a local SoCal alumni chapter to assist prospective students. She also hopes to form a core group that will promote Manhattanville with high school guidance counselors and increase the College’s donor base. Although times are difficult, Wang said that she is an optimist and illustrated her belief in Manhattanville’s mission by quoting Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Caring for

the Campus Community

Supporting the health and well-being of Manhattanville students is nothing new to Melissa Brinley Boston ’00, PsyD. As the associate dean of Student Health and Counseling (SHAC), it is a job she embraces 24/7, overseeing the emotional and physical care of any Valiant in need. But beyond Boston’s professionalism, she also supports the Manhattanville community by making annual financial gifts. As Boston explained, Manhattanville had an immense and lasting impact on her life, and she wants to do what she can to help today’s students create a positive connection for themselves. It is not difficult to understand why Manhattanville might hold a special place in Boston’s heart: She met her husband, Aaron Boston ’02, here. At the time, both were studentathletes—she as a member of the tennis team and he as a member of the first Valiant hockey team—and she said they both valued the camaraderie they found in classes and in competitions. But Boston’s decision to give back sprang from more than feelings of nostalgia. In her position at SHAC, she has witnessed first-hand the real difficulties facing students who come to the center for help, particularly during this past year. “I think all across the board the needs are greater than ever. So many students have experienced so much loss,” said Boston. “I just feel for them. And I hope we can get through this sooner rather than later.” When donating to the school last year, Boston made a point of checking off the box for the “Emergency Fund,” an initiative created by the Dean of Students Office to provide assistance to undergraduate students encountering unforeseen and inadvertent financial difficulties. Set up pre-pandemic, the Student Emergency Fund took on new urgency last spring when all students had to leave campus

Melissa Boston ’00 and Manhattanville shifted to remote learning. Thanks to the Emergency Fund, students could apply for help to cover the cost of travel fees, housing, food, living expenses, and storage fees, among other vital needs.

Through the couple’s yearly gifts, Boston said they hoped to help students with their financial concerns, allowing them to focus on creating their own amazing experiences at Manhattanville. “I know it’s a hard time,” said Boston, “and whatever we can do to help, we want to do it.”

Mother O’Byrne Legacy Spotlight

Planning for Manhattanville’s Future

Joan Szoke ’71

Decades before most people start thinking about estate planning, Joan Ricklefs Szoke ’71 and her husband, John, decided to create a joint trust from which they could make bequests to their respective alma maters (John is a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute). “We put a lot of care into thinking about what we’re going to do with our assets,” said Szoke. “And we feel good about Manhattanville and WPI.” Reflecting on where Manhattanville was in 1971 compared with where it is today, Szoke said she felt great admiration for the College. “It has successfully managed setbacks that other liberal arts schools haven’t had to handle, and it’s still out there innovating and doing the best job it can.” In particular, Szoke referenced the efforts of former president Richard Berman and President Michael Geisler, PhD, including their dedication to Manhattanville’s mission to provide a strong liberal arts education with an emphasis on social justice and service. It is the same mission that permeated the College back when Szoke was an undergraduate music major taking piano and flute lessons in the Pius X music building. She credited her professors as well as the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, who were still a revered presence on campus, for opening her mind to think critically about the larger world. “These were very bright women,” she said. In addition, the campus community itself expanded the lived experiences of the student body. “The Order of Sacred Heart was a worldwide order, so young women came from all over the world to attend the College,” said Szoke, who added that Manhattanville’s Project SHARE program also welcomed and financially supported students from disadvantaged neighborhoods.

However, by the time Szoke graduated as a member of the last all-female class, the College was undergoing massive fundamental changes—becoming nondenominational and coed—and no one could predict how these Joan Szoke and her husband, John. shifts would impact the school’s future. In the years that followed, Szoke began her career as a music teacher and later became an entrepreneur and artist-member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, always donating what she could to support the school. As a lifetime donor, Szoke said that she “kept tabs” on the College, hoping that it could grow with the times without losing its identity. Almost fifty years later, Szoke was proud to report that the College has, indeed, succeeded in staying the course. In fact, she admitted feeling a bit envious upon learning about all of the opportunities available to students today. “The jobs that are open to women now that weren’t there when I was a student are amazing. I read a profile about a woman who is majoring in music technology and digital media studies, and I thought, ‘Oh, my God, that didn’t exist when I was down there!’ And that Music Management program that they put in place quite a while ago…that was a wonderful idea.” She added that she would love to see more alumni support the College. “In these times that we’re living in…education is crucially important,” said Szoke. “It’s so important to teach these young people to think critically, to evaluate information and to be, as the mission says, ethically and socially responsible,” said Szoke. By creating a joint trust, Szoke and her husband are doing their part to ensure that Manhattanville’s mission continues into the future.

Mother Eleanor O’Byrne LEGACY SOCIETY The Mother Eleanor O’Byrne Legacy Society honors alumni and friends who have created a living legacy by designating Manhattanville College as the beneficiary of a bequest, trust, charitable gift annuity, life insurance policy or retirement plan, or who have made other estate provisions for the College. The Society is named for the fifth President, who served from 1945 to 1965. A Lifetime

Titsa Pelzman ’49 It has been more than seventy years since Titsa Fotopulos Pelzman ’49 received her nursing degree from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart, but this ebullient 97-yearold spoke about her alma mater as if she had just been handed her diploma. “It was a dream!” she Titsa Fotopulos Pelzman ’49 in her early days as a nurse said during a recent FaceTime interview from her kitchen. “Manhattanville reshaped my life, and I thank God morning, noon, and night [for it].” When asked what her life would have been like without Manhattanville, Pelzman shook her head. “I can’t even think about it!” she said. The oldest of four children of Greek immigrant parents, Pelzman didn’t know much of the world beyond Caldwell Avenue in the Bronx, where she and her family lived in a small apartment. “We were very, very poor,” she recalled. “We only spoke Greek at home, and it was very strict.” Pelzman’s mother was the family’s anchor, who, despite her lack of formal education, taught Pelzman and her siblings daily lessons in fortitude and compassion. “My mother never went to

school, so she did not even learn how to read or write,” said Pelzman. Nevertheless, after arriving in America, Pelzman’s mother taught herself to read by studying both the American and Greek newspapers. “She never did learn how to write,” said Pelzman. “But she could speak English and read the daily news. I was so proud of her.” Although money was scarce, Pelzman’s mother modeled daily acts of practical generosity to Pelzman and her siblings. Retelling one family story, Pelzman recalled how, when she was about ten years old, her mother made a pot of soup for a Greek woman who lived in the building across the street. Pelzman’s mother told her that this woman was sick and had children to feed. “I didn’t even know the lady’s name,” said Pelzman, who dutifully delivered the soup. “I went inside on the first floor and I knocked on a door. A lady opened the door and I spoke Greek to her, saying ‘My mother is sending you some soup because you don’t feel well.’” The woman accepted the meal and Pelzman returned home. Nothing more was said, but the “teachable moment” was seeded in Pelzman’s heart. “There’s a Greek saying,” she said. “‘Do good and forget it!’ In other words, God pays you back.” By the time Pelzman graduated from high school, in 1941, she knew that her employment prospects were limited. Secretarial jobs were the quickest route to employment for girls her age, but she had never

learned how to type. (“There was never an empty seat in the high school [typing] course!”) Pelzman found a job as a cashier at the local Lowe’s movie theater but was desperate to earn a degree that would support her throughout her life. In fact, Pelzman had always harbored dreams of becoming a doctor, so she took it upon herself to set up an interview with a physician at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, hoping he could give

her some guidance. His words of wisdom to Pelzman were succinct and devastating: “You can’t do it.” The doctor explained that without money, Pelzman would have to work and not have enough time or energy to devote to the required coursework. “I left there so downhearted,” said Pelzman. “I didn’t know what to do.” Fortunately, Pelzman recalled a secretary at her high school who had always shown her small kindnesses while she was a student, so she returned to ask for her advice. The woman listened to Pelzman’s situation and finally said, “You know, the government is looking for

nurses. I think that would be a good field for you.” At that time, WWII was raging and America faced a shortage of medical personnel. Pelzman agreed, somewhat reluctantly, to give it a try. (“I still wanted to be a doctor,” she said.) From that day, Pelzman said, her future began to take shape. The secretary told her the names of a couple of nursing schools in New York, including a brand-new program at the Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. She learned that the school contracted with the US government to offer nursing students free tuition in exchange for their enlistment upon graduation. The “girls” who enrolled—“and they were all girls,” said Pelzman— could choose a three-year program that qualified them to sit for an registered nurse (RN) exam, or add a fourth year of study to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Pelzman applied to Manhattanville, sight unseen, and was accepted to begin in 1945. Located in a convent school on 133rd Street in New York City, Manhattanville’s nursing school opened a whole new world to Pelzman, who remembered being awestruck by the property itself. “It was beautiful,” she said. “It had a big fence, a cottage, and a guard at the entrance.” The principal of the school was Mother Eleanor O’Byrne, RSCJ, whom Pelzman described as “a very kind and intelligent woman,” and she would become an indelible female role model who led the faculty, staff, and students by example. “They never told us, ‘Be kind.’ It was just imbued in the whole environment.” Everyone was also expected to be diligent in their studies and act like “ladies,” in accordance with their professional calling. “We had to be in by 6 p.m. and we had to dress for dinner, otherwise we would get demerits,” recalled Pelzman. Soon after Pelzman began her first year, news came that the trustees at the nursing school had decided to discontinue the nursing program, declaring that the school had “fulfilled the objectives for which it was established.” The school would remain open to allow Pelzman and her classmates to earn their nursing diploma free of charge, but those who chose to pursue their Bachelor of Science in Nursing would have to pay tuition for that fourth year

of study. “I really wanted that degree,” said Pelzman. Fortunately, the school offered her a reduced rate and Pelzman’s father, who had not been a continual presence in her life, agreed to contribute to the cost, so she could stay all four years. Pelzman received her RN certificate in 1948 and her BS in nursing, with a minor in education, the following year. “I had a degree from Manhattanville,” she recalled with characteristic vigor. “What a gift!” Pelzman soon found employment as a nursing instructor at Central Islip State Hospital, on Long Island, the same place where Pelzman had completed her clinical rotation while she was a student. It was also where she met Oscar Pelzman, MD, a Vienna-born Holocaust survivor who became a neuropsychiatrist. They were married in 1949. At that time, Pelzman explained, hospitals had their own schools of nursing serving as in-house pipelines for hiring hospital staff, but only women who had bachelor’s degrees could be instructors. “When I got married, the [hospital] knew that I was a registered nurse with a degree, so they immediately hired me to be an instructor for the incoming class,” said Pelzman. During the next decade, Pelzman’s family was thriving and she became a mother to one stepson, Henry, and four daughters, Simone, Frances, Valerie, and Stephanie. By the early 1960s, however, Pelzman noticed a change in how her husband was moving. “Being a nurse, I observed the way he walked or went up the stairs…I knew that there was trouble ahead,” said Pelzman. In fact, her husband was showing symptoms of multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease that would eventually leave him paralyzed and bedridden for more than fourteen years. During that difficult time, Pelzman became the primary caregiver to both her husband and her children, while also working to help support the family. During the day, Pelzman worked as a school nurse/teacher while completing requirements for her teaching certification, which she received in 1967. At night, Pelzman took shifts as an ER nurse. In addition, because her husband’s medical practice had an electroencephalograph machine, Pelzman was able to earn an extra $15 for each test ordered by the hospital. “I was so grateful for it,” she said.

When the school nurse/teacher position was eliminated, Pelzman was offered a position as a kindergarten teacher, provided that she returned to school to earn more education credits. She did more than that. Attending night and summer school to accelerate the process, Pelzman earned multiple degrees by the end of the 1970s, including a teaching certificate spanning preschool to sixth grade, a master’s in liberal studies from State University of New York at Stony Brook, and a professional diploma in school administration and supervision from CW Post at Long Island University. “I grasped at every little thread that came along that gave me the possibility to take a step ahead,” she said, noting that her own degree from Manhattanville had started it all. “I am living proof of the life-changing power of a good education,” she said. Not surprisingly, when her own children graduated from high school, Pelzman encouraged all of them to pursue higher education, which they all did with great success. Her eldest, Henry, became a radiologist and a lawyer, and her youngest, Stephanie, became an architect. Her three middle daughters all attended Manhattanville, with Simone earning a BA in biology and a master’s in education, Frances earning a BFA in photography and printmaking, and Valerie beginning her studies at Manhattanville before transferring to the Culinary Institute of America to become a chef. “Can you see me?” asked Pelzman during her FaceTime interview. “I’m busting with happiness!” Pelzman continued working and caring for her husband until his passing, in 1984. And in subsequent years, after her own retirement, Pelzman devoted her skills and energy to helping others, including serving as a private-duty nurse, a teacher for driver safety classes, and a substitute teacher—a job she continued until she was in her 80s. She is still active in her local Greek Orthodox church and volunteers whenever she can. Just like her “guardian angel” from her high school, Pelzman said that she always looks to help others. “Whenever I can give a word of encouragement to anybody, I always give it,” she said. So, what advice

would she offer to Manhattanville’s newest nursing school students? “Go forward and do your best, no matter what happens along the way. Different things happen in all our lives. We cannot anticipate them. So, we have to make the best of it all the time,” said Pelzman, adding that “God pays you back in so many ways, you can’t even count them.” If indeed there is a divine ledger keeping track of our actions and intentions, Pelzman’s own words would provide a fitting inscription: “If I make somebody else happy, the world is mine.” In 2021, Manhattanville College will award the first Titsa Pelzman Endowed Scholarship for Nursing. Set up by Pelzman’s family to honor her legacy, the award is a onetime gift that keeps on giving: the initial capital is held by the College, and the scholarship is funded by the interest it earns. The Pelzman Scholarship Committee, led by Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences Debra Simons, PhD, RN, CCMR, will choose a senior-year recipient who demonstrates financial need, a commitment to both nursing and a spirit of compassion, academic merit, and who comes from an underserved community. Since Manhattanville’s nursing school will not have its first senior class until 2023, Pelzman’s family has arranged to distribute a “current-use scholarship”—a monetary gift that is made available directly from the donor and not from investment interest—for a current first-year student. The recipient will be awarded in Spring 2021.
