We hope you enjoy the new look and feel of this publication. As the newly installed 22nd president of Manhattan, I well understand that the strong alumni network that is a Manhattan hallmark is a lifeblood of our school. As you read about current students and recent graduates and their accomplishments, please know that we all realize what a tremendous asset you — our alumni — are.

It is particularly heartening to share with you what I see and feel every day on our campus: a love of learning, a desire to share knowledge, and a spirit of comradery.

There truly is vibrancy. And this comes from the willingness to look at change as a positive while maintaining the essentials.

As I said in a recent edition of the Manhattan Update newsletter, change is necessary to lead and it is vital that we lead and accept change where it is most needed. But it is equally important that we hold fast to what we must not change: our Lasallian Catholic mission and the commitment to educate the whole person with zeal, inclusivity and

O N CA M PUS Thanks to Gilman Scholarship, Psychology Major Studies Abroad in Amsterdam Daniela Ramirez ’26 was awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship through the Institute of International Education at the U.S. Department of State. The Gilman Scholarship provides student federal Pell Grant recipients the financial means to study or intern abroad.

Ramirez, an East Meadow, New York, native, is a psychology major with double minors in criminology and general business. She has served as an admissions ambassador for the University for three years, volunteered with the New York City Department of Correction, and mentored and tutored low-income Bronx youths through the New York City Police Department Options program. Through the Gilman Scholarship, she traveled to Amsterdam and participated in a two-week immersive study of comparative criminology between the U.S. and the Netherlands. She plans to continue her studies in criminology upon her graduation from Manhattan University.

President Frederick Bonato stated, “This is a wonderful opportunity for Daniela. The Gilman Scholarships are well-known for the broadening experience they offer students, and I know that Daniela was able to take full advantage of studying abroad and all that it offered.”

Engineering Students Receive ACEC Scholarships

Ten Manhattan University engineering students have received scholarships for 2025 from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York).

ACEC awards various scholarship amounts annually to students throughout New York State. Manhattan accrued the greatest number of any individual institution. Caroline Gilmore ’25 was one of two students to be awarded the top scholarship, which carries with it a stipend of $10,000.

Gilmore, who will graduate in December, is a civil engineering major with a structural engineering concentration and a minor in mathematics. She has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, as well as Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society. A native of West Harrison, New York, she currently has a structural engineering internship at Conlon Engineering in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Introducing the Sixth Borough Film Festival Manhattan University will present the inaugural Sixth Borough Film Festival April 10–12, 2026. A dynamic celebration of film and storytelling, the festival will feature screenings, discussions, and creative voices shaping the future of cinema.

The Kakos School of Arts and Sciences will host the three-day festival, which will showcase a wide range of shorts, features, fiction and documentaries. Films will compete for recognition across a diverse range of categories including Best Student Film, Best Narrative Short Film, Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary Short and Best Documentary Feature. Special categories will include Bronx Tales (films about or inspired by the Bronx), horror, and music videos, offering a unique platform for both established and emerging voices in film.

Submissions will be welcome from both established filmmakers and those just beginning in the field. Entry is free for student filmmakers, reflecting the festival’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of storytellers. The festival will be co-directed by Robert Cole, executive director of marketing, and Michael Grabowski, professor of communication.

From Quad to Camera: SVU Transforms Campus into a Set In August, Manhattan University welcomed the cast and crew of Law & Order: SVU for a two-day film shoot. The production, which brought Emmy Award-winning actress Mariska Hartigay to campus, transformed familiar spaces into the fictional prep school “Landsdowne Academy” for one of television’s longest-running dramas. Filming took place on the Quadrangle, in front of one of the University’s iconic arches, and inside campus rooms that were reimagined as set pieces. For students, the experience offered a behind-the-scenes look at professional television production at the highest level. From watching the technical coordination of cameras and lighting to seeing how actors and directors shape a scene, students had the rare opportunity to observe a major series in action on their own campus. The experience emphasized Manhattan’s role as a dynamic learning environment, where students can encounter opportunities that connect their campus to the wider creative industry.

Manhattan University Student Receives NPRDP Scholarship Nelson Paredes ’28 was awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade Inc. (NPRDP). Now in its 68th year, the parade honors the 3.2 million inhabitants of Puerto Rico and the 5.8 million Puerto Ricans residing in the continental U.S. The program and events focus on promoting education, culture, and the arts, and is committed to advancing the pursuit of higher education by awarding scholarships to students of Puerto Rican descent.

Based on an application process that included two essay questions, an interview, and a student’s overall GPA, the selection of the recipients for this year’s scholarships was highly selective, with more than 400 applications for 100 scholarships. Paredes, whose heritage is half Puerto Rican and half Italian, is a physics major with the hopes of attending graduate school to focus on astrophysics. This summer he participated in the Jasper Summer Research Scholars Program at Manhattan. His research focused on the impact of density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy on properties of neutron stars.

Mechanical Engineering Professor Elected to ASME’s Highest Governing Body Parisa Saboori, Ph.D., chair and professor of mechanical engineering, has been elected to the prestigious Board of Governors of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). She will serve a three-year term on the Board of Governors, which shapes the society’s global vision and strategy.

Qualifications for the position include business acumen and sound judgment; strong interpersonal and communication skills; integrity, honesty, and adherence to high ethical standards; and understanding of a governor’s fiduciary duties. Candidates for the position undergo multiple interviews and are chosen from the overall membership, with four governors selected each year.

As a member of the Board of Governors, Saboori said she will seek to “contribute to the advancement of engineering education, research, and professional development on a broad scale.” She believes that the world needs more leaders who not only understand the technical aspects of engineering but also demonstrate advanced leadership skills—shaped by their commitments to service, advocacy for diversity and inclusion, and a passion for engineering education.

Hany Guirguis was appointed dean of the O’Malley School of Business in March 2025, after serving as interim dean since the summer of 2024. A longtime member of the Manhattan community, Guirguis first joined the faculty in 2000 and became a full professor of economics and finance in 2010.

Over the years, he’s worn many hats — chairing the department of economics and finance, holding prestigious endowed professorships, and contributing his expertise to University-wide committees. From 2013 to 2018, he was the Louis E. Capalbo Professor of Business, and he has held the Ambassador Charles A. Gargano Endowed Chair from 2019 to the present.

An active scholar, Guirguis has published widely on real estate finance, macroeconomics, financial modeling, and applied economics. He is the author or co-author of numerous publications, including Measuring the Impact of Monetary Policy on Mortgage Rates and When to Hedge the Downside Risk? He’s also brought students into his research, co-authoring papers with undergraduates and securing grants to support their work.

For more than a decade, he has guided Manhattan’s student team in the College Fed Challenge, helping them test their skills on a national stage at the Federal Reserve Bank.

His academic path is equally impressive. He earned a Ph.D. in macroeconomics and econometrics and an M.S. in economics from the University of Oregon; an MBA in finance and investment from Baruch College, New York; an M.A. in economics from American University in Cairo, Egypt; and a B.A. in accounting and business administration from the University of Helwan in Cairo.

After 25 years as a faculty member in the O’Malley School of Business, you were named dean this March. Congratulations! What excites you most about leading this school?

I am excited about the significant potential for the O’Malley School of Business. Numerous opportunities for growth and improvement are within our reach, both in the short-term and long-term. With the clear vision we share at the school, along with the strong support of the current administration, our deans, my colleagues, our alumni, and our advisory board, I am confident that the future of our school and our University is bright.

The business world is evolving rapidly, especially with advances in AI, data analytics and more. How is the school adapting to prepare students for the future?

We are currently revising our undergraduate programs to include artificial intelligence, coding, and machine learning as essential components of the curriculum. Specifically, students majoring in marketing and management will be required to complete two introductory courses in Python, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Additionally, we plan to expand our academic offerings by introducing four master’s degrees focused on integrating analytics with finance, digital marketing and accounting. Our vision is to establish a cuttingedge business school that adapts to the rapid changes in the

Since arriving at Manhattan in July 2022, Dean Marcy Kelly has focused on boosting student success and creating opportunities for undergraduates to dive into research early on. She expanded access to the Summer Research Scholars Program, supported fieldwork opportunities, and streamlined advising to better guide students through their academic journey.

Under her leadership, the Kakos School of Arts and Sciences has introduced a new game design major, minors in astronomy and quality science, an online M.S. in computer science, and several accelerated five-year degree programs.

Before joining Manhattan, Kelly was professor and chair of biology at Pace University, where she oversaw 11 degree programs in biology and the health sciences. A recognized national leader in STEM education reform, she has been a Vision and Change Leadership Fellow with the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education since 2015. She’s also earned grants from the New York State Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and the American Society for Microbiology.

There, she managed a $130 million budget, co-authored NSF’s Artificial Intelligence Roadmap, and helped launch new programs advancing national research priorities.

Before NSF, Jablokow was associate chief academic officer and a full professor at Penn State University, where she remains professor emerita. She led two successful ABET accreditation cycles, secured funding for a regional entrepreneurship and innovation hub, and oversaw the creation of a new Multidisciplinary Engineering Design degree.

Her research explores design cognition, artificial intelligence and design, and the dynamics of high-performance engineering teams.

Ascending Ever Higher at the Port Authority In 1997, the future looked bright for Amanda Rogers ’01, P.E. Rogers, a softball player at New Fairfield High School, she had scholarship offers from numerous universities to play shortstop. From her long list of offers, Rogers chose to enroll at Manhattan University, which provided a generous scholarship, along with affordable tuition and a renowned engineering program. With the guidance of her family, she decided to pursue an engineering degree, since she had always excelled in physics and math.

did have its benefits. It taught Rogers how to prioritize tasks and efficiently organize her time, a skillset that’s helped her tremendously throughout her career. “My time at Manhattan gave me a ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality,” she said. “Put in the work, so on game day, you’re prepared.”

During her time at Manhattan, Rogers bounced between the structural and mechanical sides of engineering before ultimately settling on mechanical, which entails areas like HVAC, mechanics of materials and fluid dynamics. “I just loved the science behind the materials and the chemistry of steel,” she said. “I enjoyed the dynamics of mechanical.” The highlight of Rogers’ college experience went beyond textbooks and classrooms. It was winning the 1999 MAAC softball tournament. To this day, more than 20 years later, it remains a fond memory for her.

After graduating in 2001, Rogers had to figure out her next steps. A few of her classmates had raved about their experience working at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Rogers was intrigued; she liked the idea of construction management and had zero interest in an office job and sitting behind a computer all day. “I loved the idea of helping build and restore New York City,” she said. “Commercial buildings, airports, bus terminals — everything you can imagine in engineering, Port Authority has it.”

Rogers landed her first job at the Port Authority as an engineering trainee in the construction management division, where she worked for 23 years. As an engineering trainee, she assisted with field inspections and provided inspection services for contractor foundation work. Her first major project was helping build the Jamaica Station, an AirTrain transit hub that connects travelers to John. F. Kennedy International Airport.

After working on the project for four years, Rogers moved on to work at JFK airport itself, an exciting step in her career.

“JFK is like a city in and of itself,” she said. “There was so much to work on.” Her many projects included replacing an asphalt runway with a concrete runway, building bridges within the airport, and an HVAC installation.

In 2013, Rogers became involved in one of her favorite projects: LaGuardia Airport. For four years, she and her team were responsible for knocking down LaGuardia Airport while it was still functioning and rebuilding a totally new airport —

a revamp that, many New Yorkers will agree, was desperately needed. In 2017, Rogers was tasked with overseeing the $2 billion Restore the George program, providing much-needed structural restoration of the George Washington Bridge. Her team replaced 592 suspender ropes and rehabilitated much of the bridge’s structural steel.

In 2019, she became the chief of aviation construction, assisting with the redevelopment of Newark Liberty International Airport, as well as overseeing the beginning redevelopments at JFK. In 2023, yet another door opened in Rogers’ career, when she assumed the role of deputy chief engineer. In this role, she ran six divisions of engineers, designers, operations personnel, construction managers, and quality assurance personnel — a full-service engineering department of roughly 600 people.

Rogers’ impressive career hasn’t stopped there. In February 2025, she was promoted to her current role as the director of construction at the Port Authority. In this role, she oversees various projects and ensures that she assembles the right people, with the right skills, for any given project. She manages everyone from engineers to designers to accountants. Her next big projects include working on the Gateway Tunnel and Midtown Bus Terminal Replacement — two of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. Both facilities will provide more capacity, allowing people, goods and services to move efficiently throughout the region.

Rogers said goodbye to softball long ago. She’s since swapped softball bats for golf clubs, but her work and the prospect for the future seem to excite Rogers the most. “So much of the New York metro area’s infrastructure was built during the Industrial Revolution,” she said. “So many buildings and structures are approaching the end of their useful life. It’s time to start redeveloping, replacing and rehabbing them. It’s like we’re in the second Industrial Revolution, and, as engineers, we’re fortunate enough to be involved in that.”

Brother Gus Joins Service Trip in Kenya LAST AUGUST, BROTHER AUGUSTINE (GUS) NICOLETTI, FSC, D.MIN., ED.D. , vice president

for mission, traveled to Kenya for a friends and family service trip in support of a Lasallian charitable organization, The Centre of Love Foundation (TCOLF), which works to help underserved communities in Nairobi by providing education and access to clean water.

During the weeklong trip, Brother Gus and six other volunteers conducted outreach at several sites near Nairobi, including an orphanage, a school for impoverished children run by the Ngong Road Children’s Foundation, and Cheshire Home, as well as a shelter run by Catholic sisters for unhoused elderly people. They also visited the Kibera settlement, where they attended the dedication of land for a school.

“We went there to talk with the people, to pray with them, to engage them in conversation,” he says. At the school, “we were engaging with the kids, playing games with them, telling stories and reading to them.”

Brother Gus has deep roots in the African continent, having lived and worked there extensively over the course of his Brotherhood.

“Africa,” he says, “is a second home for me.”

Indeed, that sense of belonging was abundantly clear during a Maasai communal celebration at which Brother Gus; Patrice Henning, founder of TCOLF; and Brother Larry Schatz, FSC, of the Christian Brothers of the Midwest, were named honorary tribal elders.

It’s about mutual respect and understanding.

It’s about “together and by association” as transformative partners hoping to change each other’s lives and circumstances.

As superintendent of the Yorktown Central School District in Westchester County, Ronald Hattar ’03 has channeled these qualities to transform the way students learn.

Born and raised in Yonkers, New York, Hattar’s path to educational leadership began at Manhattan University, where he earned both undergraduate and master’s degrees in secondary education. He was mentored by the late James Harten, D.A., assistant professor of education, a figure he credits with deeply influencing his philosophy on teaching.

The initiative has gained national recognition, with Yorktown CSD earning distinctions such as National District of Character and National Blue Ribbon School, along with recognition by U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek for excellence in STEM education. As Hattar says, “We’ve received every recognition under the sun.”

She’s Got Irish Roots and a Rising Career in the Bronx Jilleen Barrett ’23 has always taken pride in her Irish heritage. A native of Sayville, Long Island, she recently visited Ireland and traveled around the country, including a visit to the hometown of her mother’s ancestors, Moneymore, in County Donegal.

“Moneymore has only 12 houses,” she laughs. “We were confused at first and didn’t realize that we’d arrived!”

Barrett has arrived professionally, as well. As the director of communications and marketing at the Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC), her work is instrumental in promoting local businesses, schools and organizations. And that work is being noticed.

“There are so many things about my journey that are unconventional,” says Lisa Daley ’93, J.D., reflecting on the exceptional career trajectory she has pursued since her days as a student at Manhattan University.

Now, following a distinguished career as a lawyer and several years as a registered nurse, Daley is stepping into her newest and most highprofile role, as a New York City Family Court judge.

“It’s not lost on me that, as a Black woman and an immigrant woman, I’m still a minority within the judiciary,” she says. “I’m looking forward to being more impactful and having a more far-reaching effect on my community by the work that I’m going to be able to do.”

Propelling the Future of the Boating Industry

Most adults in their early twenties graduate college and then go on to pursue a career. But Tyler Temple ’27 did the opposite. At just 24 years old, he’s the CEO of Pollentia, a startup that manufactures smart electric boats and ships. He founded the company in 2021, and he’s now also pursuing a major in computer science at Manhattan University.

A native of Pittsburgh, Temple was never one to follow conventional paths. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the United States Navy in 2019. “I was looking for something different in my education,” he explains. “I wanted to gain a different level of experience rather than go directly to college.”

Temple served as a firefighter and first responder on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. His responsibilities included conducting a full analysis of the ship, ensuring that its mechanics and safety mechanisms were operational, and enacting preventative measures to protect the ship from damage. He also took courses like Aviation Mechanics and Damage Control for college credit. His plan was to enroll in college after serving in the Navy. But that plan was overturned when Temple was medically discharged from the Navy.

Taking on the World of Media There’s no shortage of things to do on Manhattan University’s campus. Just ask student William Walker ’26. Since enrolling in Manhattan University, Walker has amassed a long and impressive résumé of extracurricular roles, organizations and activities.

Walker is no stranger to a busy lifestyle. He grew up visiting New York City often, attending theatrical performances and immersing himself in the hustle and bustle of city life. Walker’s frequent visits to the city fostered a love for the city environment and the performing arts, which led to his interest in Manhattan University. “I loved the school’s proximity to the city and its urban feel,” said Walker. “The campus still has greenery, which was important to me. It’s not just brick walls and skyscrapers everywhere.” But it was Walker’s meeting with Andrew Bauer, director of performing arts, that sold him on the University. “That meeting really left an impression on me,” said Walker. “I wasn’t even enrolled yet, and here was this professor, taking the time to meet with a random student on a Saturday.”

Saukin’s journey began in the South Bronx, where he was raised.

Both of his parents had emigrated to America to build a new and better life, his father from Russia and his mother from Poland. “I was that new life,” Saukin reflects. “I had an obligation to do my best and prove to my parents that their work and effort wasn’t for naught.”

His father told him that he couldn’t wash cars and shine shoes as a child, implying that his son should be doing something more with his life. But Saukin struggled with reading, which hurt his self-esteem and made him feel socially disconnected. In sixth grade, however, his teacher asked him to stay after school for extra help, and his reading quickly improved. He graduated from

junior high school at the top of his class, and repeated this achievement at Morris High School.

“I knew I wasn’t just competing with students,” Saukin says. “I also felt like I was competing against families — students who had resources, parental guidance and modern technology — things I never really had growing up.” Because of this, attending college had never felt like a real possibility during his childhood.

His strong grades, however, changed that perception.

Saukin enrolled in the City College of New York. He pursued engineering, allured by the challenge of the field and encouraged by his stellar grades in both math and science. In elementary school, he and his friends would assemble their own scooters using wooden crates, 2x4s and roller skates. Now it was time to apply that interest in engineering at the collegiate level. Saukin proved to be a dedicated student, completing the five-year program in four-and-one half years.

After graduating in 1966, he continued at City College for graduate school and pursued the area of engineering that, in his view, had the greatest problems and the highest demand. Saukin was asked to join the board of directors, and in 2006, he was named the ACE Faculty Member of the Year. There have been many other honors bestowed upon him. In 2015, he was Inducted into the hall of fame of the New York Water Environment Association for his contributions to the organization and its objectives. A year later, he received the New York Building Foundation Recognition Award for his summer programs and for promoting the engineering profession. In 2024, Saukin received the Chairs Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York.

Gunn ’30 Alumni Medal, considered one of the University’s highest undergraduate honors. Near the conclusion of the May 16 convocation this year, that honor was bestowed upon Joseph V. Brennan ’25, an outstanding student in the O’Malley School of Business and a top competitor on the men’s swimming and diving team.

The Gunn Medal is awarded to a graduating senior who has made the most significant overall contribution to Manhattan University during his or her undergraduate years with an emphasis on excellence, leadership and service in the Lasallian tradition.

Nominees must possess clear evidence of character, maturity and leadership in the areas of extracurricular, co-curricular and off-campus activities, as well as academic accomplishments. The awardee is selected by a joint committee of faculty and alumni and is presented annually by the president of the Alumni Society.

An accounting major, Brennan re-founded the University’s PreLaw Society, for which he served as treasurer/CFO for two years.

He mentored first-year business students and was an executive board member and treasurer for the Pen and Sword Honor Society and was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest recognition a business student can receive. He served as team captain for the men’s swimming and diving team in his junior and senior years and set the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke — twice. He became the first Jasper in the school’s history to win a gold medal at the MAAC Finals.

Brennan also demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the service of others. He volunteered at children’s hospitals; participated in breast cancer walks and the Tunnels to Towers Run; worked alongside fellow Manhattan University student-athletes in collecting and distributing food and clothing to those in need, and volunteered for cleanups in Van Cortlandt Park.

“Someone looked at me and said, ‘Wow you could be really good,’” Usilo say. “Ever since then, I never stopped.”

Usilo keeps basketball in his purview with the help of a selfdesigned court in his backyard, which serves as a family staple during the summer months. He has also teamed up with his coworkers in recreational tournaments.

Usilo and his family now reside in Bergen County, New Jersey, but a portion of his heart will always belong on the hill in Riverdale.

“It's great having a Jasper as a wife, a Jasper degree and a future Jasper as a daughter now,” he reflects. “Without the support and encouragement of all Jaspers, I wouldn't be here. They gave me everything I have today.”

Lipponer Runs for a Cause in Post-Lax Life

WHEN GRACE LIPPONER ’22 THINKS BACK TO HER TIME

playing for the Manhattan University women's lacrosse team, she can't help but think about those core memories of her college career which helped shape her. Lipponer established her legend at Gaelic Park by scoring the most goals in a single season in the program's history with 63 tallies in 2022.

“Coming together and having your best friends with you and upsetting a team is a big part of what it means to be a Jasper,” Lipponer says.

That's why as tough as it was to walk away from a fifth season due to COVID-impacted eligibility rules, Lipponer launched the start of her teaching career after graduating with a bachelor's degree in general education and master’s in special education from Manhattan University.

The change of lifestyle in the real world was an adjustment at first, Lipponer says, and it prompted her to explore a new hobby. She started doing more long-distance runs, which helped her cope with her experiences with obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD).

Peter McCarthy, assistant professor of special education and elementary education, introduced her to the JCK Foundation, an organization founded by John Tessitore in honor of his late friend, John Kelly, who lost his battle with OCD. JCK spreads positive educational messages to students and athletes about how to live with OCD and overcome mental health challenges.

A newfound passion emerged for Lipponer.

“All credit to Dr. McCarthy because I wouldn't have known about it if he didn't connect me with the founders,” Lipponer says.

JCK partners with the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon for fundraising campaigns. Lipponer interviewed with them and was granted a spot to run in the 2025 marathon.

“It hit so close to home for me," Lipponer said of partnering with JCK. “I told them about my experience with mental health and OCD and we really hit it off.”

As tough as running a marathon is, Lipponer is no stranger to the impressive feat. While teaching and living in Spain last year, she was encouraged by her friends to run with them in the Rock 'n' Roll Running Series Madrid Marathon edition after constant training together.

“I felt very much the same playing lacrosse my senior year as I did completing the marathon, just that feeling of accomplishment,” says Lipponer, who led the Jaspers to the MAAC semifinals in 2022.

Additionally, the Long Island native was regaled with NYC Marathon talk from her overseas friends who had always marveled at it. As a result, it made Lipponer realize how fortunate she is to get to reap the benefits of New York City.

“Coming back to New York, this felt meant to be," she says. “Making this connection with JCK and getting the opportunity to run it for a cause I'm passionate about.”

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 8.2 million adults in the United States have been impacted by OCD at some point in their lives.

RALPH TI NARI retired from the federal government in 2018 after nearly 43 years. A year later, he was inducted into the New York District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers’ Hall of Fame. Earlier in his career, he served as a supervisory civil engineer for

He began his career in the data processing division of the New York City Transit Authority, where he worked for nine years. In 1985, he transitioned into a consulting role in data processing, providing services to a diverse range of clients. McCarrick has been deeply committed to his parish of St. Frances de Chantal since 1967. He has been a member of the Nocturnal Adoration and Holy Name Societies, even serving as a past HNS president. He is also an avid music lover and has been a member of the parish choir, even performing at the Vatican for Pope Benedict in 2008. He also plays the Irish traditional wood flute at parish functions.

DEBORAH M ESSI NA has been promoted to COO of RiverSpring Living after more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. In this new position, she oversees six senior housing entities: skilled nursing, rehabilitation services, home care, social services, transition planning and care management. She helped establish the only area infectious disease specialty unit with the New York State Department of Health during COVID-19 and expanded post-acute rehab programming to include outpatient services. Lastly, she developed a rapid referral program with the New York Presbyterian Hospital System for skilled nursing and home care discharges that enables hospital discharges to take place up to 72 hours earlier.

AMY SNI FFEN received her Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in computer science in June 2024. Her thesis, Design, Analysis and Drop Assembly of Interlocking Rigid Bodies, explores the mathematical modeling and computational design of interlocking structures. In July 2024, she joined MIT Lincoln Laboratory as a member of technical staff working as a systems analyst.

BRENDAN KREBS is doing well at his job at Royal Bank of Canada and excelling in professional lacrosse. He plays goalie for the Maryland Whipsnakes in the Premier Lacrosse League. In his first season, Brendan appeared in four games and had 54 saves and a 55.1.% save percentage. He had a 17 save performance in a game against the Caroline Chaos, which clinched a playoff berth for the Whipsnakes. Brendan will be headed into his second season this summer.

I N M E MORI A M Brother Patrick A. Horner, FSC, Ph.D. BROTHER PATRICK A. HORNER, FSC, PH.D., a beloved faculty member and scholar at Manhattan University for 50 years, passed away on July 19, 2025 at the Christian Brothers Community in Riverdale, New York. Born Joseph Francis Horner in Yonkers, New York, on October 24, 1945, he entered the Barrytown Novitiate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1963, and received the name Patrick Aloysius. He pronounced his perpetual vows at La Salle Institute in Troy, New York, in 1971.

Brother Patrick earned his bachelor’s degree from The Catholic University of America and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the State University of New York at Albany. Before joining Manhattan University as an adjunct in 1975, Brother Patrick taught at La Salle Institute in Troy, New York. He became a full-time faculty member at Manhattan in 1977 and served as chair of the English department from 1994–1998 and again in 2006. On his retirement in 2022, he was named professor emeritus of English, a testament to his enduring impact on the department and the University.

A medievalist with a global reputation, Brother Patrick specialized in ancient and medieval literature. Generations of students fondly remember his Classical Origins course, which traced Greek and Roman literature and culture, as well as his Chaucer course, which drew a devoted following. His scholarship on medieval sermons brought him international recognition, and his passion for teaching inspired countless students to explore literature with curiosity and rigor.

Colleagues and students alike marveled at Brother Patrick’s vitality and dedication. Michael Reinhart ’95, ’01, recalls that being in class with him “was like watching an athlete in the absolute prime of his career: Every word and action was full of energy and passion for what was clearly his favorite topic; and he enjoyed every minute of it!” Many former students highlighted his ability to make even the most challenging texts compelling, meaningful, and exciting, with his characteristic enthusiasm leaving lasting impressions.

In a moving eulogy at Brother Patrick’s funeral Mass, he noted, “The extraordinary gift of Patrick’s voice was its undeniable worth.

That voice expressed his bottomless heart and his capacious brain.”

Brother Patrick’s classroom energy was matched by his generosity and care for those around him. Marinaccio recalled, “He was a genuinely loving colleague, who never missed an opportunity to laud a presentation at the Dante Seminar, to provide an effusive teaching observation, to applaud a point made at a department meeting, or to praise a job well-done as a committee member or department chair. I know each of us will remember our own experiences of Pat’s beneficence.”

Beyond his scholarly and pedagogical accomplishments, Brother Patrick embodied the Lasallian mission. Speaking to Manhattan

Magazine in 2019, he reflected, “I think over my time here, and it was true prior to my time here, the impact of the Brothers on campus was the way they went about what they were doing. I hope I have done it rather than talked about it.”

No one ever surpassed Brother Patrick's living out his life-long commitment to his religious community,” said Brother Robert. “To use an inside phrase of the Brothers, he was a ‘school man’ through and through. His energy in the classroom and his many scholarly pursuits led him to not only show students his love for medieval English, he also invited them to search for their own sense of meaning. His passion never wavered.”

Brother Patrick’s energetic personality enlivened both classrooms and campus corridors. He could be seen motoring across campus in what students affectionately called the “Brother Pat shuffle” and delivering lectures so vivid that even the most complex classical texts came alive. His passion extended beyond literature; he was also a devoted baseball fan, proudly cheering for New York and, later, the San Francisco Giants.

Brother Patrick received the 2015 Costello Excellence in Teaching Award and, in 2018, celebrated 50 years of teaching at Manhattan University. Brother Patrick is remembered as a scholar, mentor, teacher, and friend whose life was defined by dedication, generosity, and a joyful embrace of the Lasallian mission. His extraordinary intellect, inexhaustible energy, and love for students and colleagues alike leave an indelible mark on the Manhattan University community.

He is survived by his Brothers of the Christian Schools, his colleagues, and the countless students whose lives he touched over nearly five decades. Brother Patrick A. Horner, FSC, will be deeply missed but fondly remembered as a towering presence whose voice, heart, and mind shaped generations.
