Kaituna respecting our environment

Kia ora koutou A warm welcome to Leo Langley, who has joined Pelorus Learning area, we wish you all the best for your learning journey here at Havelock School. We also say farewell to Maddie Lyons-MacLean, who has moved to Rai Valley to continue her journey. Now that we are officially in Spring, keep an eye out for our Spring Festival/Pet Day schedule, which will be distributed to students within the next week. Due to the Marlborough A & P Show being cancelled this year, we are seeing this as an opportunity to personalise the schedule to suit Havelock School. In order to help guide both the organisation and judging, entry forms need to be at school by/on Friday 25 Sep, the last day of term. Full information is contained in the schedule. From the beginning of Term 4 sun-smart hats and clothing will again be expected to be worn when outside. Sun-smart means… • A bucket hat to protect the ears, nose and neck areas • No singlets/string tops ie shoulders, back and upper arms protected This year we were unable to proceed with our annual Pelorus Cluster Cross Country competition, due to Covid Alert Level restrictions. As these restrictions are likely to be ongoing, we have had to put in place contingency plans so that our tamariki do not continually miss out. In place of the Cross Country, we will be holding a Whānau Fun Day on the last day of this term, Friday 25 September. Activities will include gardening galore, crafty creations and running races, with Whānau groups competing against each other. We hope to be in Alert Level 1, so that we can invite visitors to participate, however if this is not the case we will be sure to share photos of our day on Facebook and the school website. Our Whānau groups are named after prominent people associated with Havelock. We have: Principal Page Havelock Named after: Sir Henry Havelock, who was a British general, which the town of Havelock is named after. Colour: Blue/kahurangi Mascot: Dolphin/popoto

Rutherford Pickering Named after: Ernest Named after: William Rutherford, winner of the Pickering, pioneering space Nobel Prize for Chemistry, and satellite scientist, who who attended Havelock attended Havelock School. School. Colour: White/ma Colour: Green/kākāriki Mascot: White heron/kotuku Mascot: Green-lipped mussel/ kuku Each child belongs to one of the above Whānau groups. We are currently in the process of holding our very own elections to select Whānau group leaders, who will help us make decisions on what future Whānau group activities to organise. Watch this space! Tenā koutou On behalf of the Havelock School Board of Trustees I am pleased to announce that a new principal has been appointed for the school. The Board of Trustees was very fortunate to have the support and assistance of Neil Wilkinson, an NZSTA endorsed consultant, as our external advisor throughout the appointment process. During the appointment process seventeen individuals requested an information package and nine of these educators applied for the position. The full Board met with Neil to review each application and discuss referees’ reports. From this meeting the most promising candidates were shortlisted for an interview. It was then the unanimous decision of the Board to offer the position of Principal of Havelock School to Tracey Wearing. Tracey has since accepted the offer and we are very excited to be moving forward with a principal who knows our children, our staff, our school, and our community so well. Tracey brings with her a willingness to learn, positive relationships with students and their whānau, a passion for our amazing school and a strong vision for our future. This appointment also gives our school the stability we need in order to move forward. Tracey has been a member of the staff since 2013, during this time she has taken on various roles within the school such as, Deputy Principal, PB4L lead teacher, Mentor, 2017-2020 Board of Trustees Staff Representative and recently Acting Principal. We are extremely excited about this positive step forward for our school and our community. Yours sincerely,

Kind Regards

Selena Robbins

Pelorus Area Health Trust Donations and Grants

At the recent AGM, PAHT gave out over $8000 in donations and grants to local community groups. Organisations in the Pelorus area who support the health and well-being of our community were given donations to help them with their important work. A Health Education Grant was also awarded to Jack Bowes-Clerke to help him with his dream to become a country GP in our remote area. There were some interesting displays from these health organisations, including Jo Douglas from St John’s Havelock demonstrating the bone drill used to administer drugs into unconscious patients. Luckily, she had a model bone, so none of us needed to volunteer for the demo.

Mobility Aids Loans

PAHT has had a sort out and re vamp of its medical aids. We have purchased a new wheel chair and blood pressure monitor; as well as servicing and repairing everything from toilet seats to walkers. If you need a medical or mobility aid to help with your recuperation, please call into the Charity Shop to sign one out. These are free to use- though we do accept koha on return. www.PelorusAreaHealthTrust.co.nz https://www.facebook.com/CharitableTrustHealth

KNIFE AND TOOL SHARPENING Ron Floyd will be back at the Havelock Menzshed on Wednesday 16th September. 9:30am – 11am to sharpen your knives, saws and gardening implements. Ron will be bringing back the tools he was given to sharpen at the recent Lions’ MidWinter Market. You are invited to come to Shed 67 at the Marina to collect them. The Sheddies are turning out molds of the Mussels we used to see on the streets of Havelock, at the request of Havelock Vision 2020, whose project this is. We welcome people coming to the Shed to see how the process works from pouring the mold, to decorating the shells and fixing on their legs.

Sponsored Walk to Raise Funds for the Havelock Community Library. I am hoping to raise funds for the Community Library by walking from Havelock to Picton on the Link Pathway, a distance of 36km. This will take place on Sunday 20th September, leaving at 8am and arriving in Picton some time much later in the day! I would welcome sponsors to help with this, either as a donation, or so much per kilometre.

Please contact me on 5742409, 0210629378, or email ivannjan@xtra.co.nz. Otherwise sponsorship forms will be available at the Four Square store in Havelock and the Havelock Charity Shop. I have friends accompanying me for support and encouragement. Thank you, Jan Godsiff.
