Kia ora koutou A warm welcome to our newest students who’ve recently joined us; Kea Robertson in Wakamarina; Nikau Robertson and Madison Lyons-MacLean in Pelorus. We wish you all the best for your time at Havelock School. With the warmer days we’ve been having lately, we’ve been inspired to get outdoors and make a start on prepping the planter boxes (kindly donated to us by the Menz Shed). We’ve moved them to a more accessible location down near the flagpole, so that children can work on them more regularly. Each of our Whānau/house groups (Pickering, Rutherford and Havelock) has been assigned one planter box, so we can have vege growing contests. The fourth planter box is for Pelorus Community Preschool to use. Before we can plant our seedlings (kindly donated by Treasure Chest) we intend on painting the planter boxes in our Whanau/house group colours and of course filling them with topsoil, once we source some. We are taking part in Garden to Table, with the aim of children growing their own food, preparing it and sharing it. Watch this space! Recently we’ve been working closely with the Education Review Office as part of a longitudinal process and as part of a group of schools surveyed on their experience and response to the Covid-19 Lockdown. We’ve been proud to share how successful student engagement was during lockdown, mainly due to the support provided by whānau and the dedicated staff who prepared online learning suitable to the needs of our tamariki. For more information on both these processes, please see the school notice board at the Southern end of the School Hall. Earlier this year Havelock School became a Positive Behaviour for Learning School (PB4L). So what does this mean? PB4L is about teaching children the right behaviour, just like we teach any other subject at school. If a student does not know how to read, we teach. If a student does not know how to swim, we teach. If a student does not know how to multiply, we teach. If a student does not know how to behave… we teach. PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence. Principal Page
The PB4L School-Wide framework is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. The framework is designed to be tailored to our own environment and cultural needs. It’s not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems and practices we have in place to support students to make positive behaviour choices. The first step in tailoring the PB4L framework to suit Havelock School is to create a set of positive expectations in consultation with staff, students and community. We started this process by asking ‘what are the characteristics and values of an ideal Havelock School student?’. The next step is for staff and community to reflect on these ideals and think ‘how well do we model these characteristics and values that we expect of the students?’. To complete this first step, our set of positive expectations should be grouped into values that we can be, show and have. For example with RESPECT; we can be respectful, show respect and have respect. This helps us with the second step, creating a matrix of expected behaviour in a variety of contexts, which we can then teach. To submit your thoughts/feedback on the PB4L process, please feel free to email principal@havelock.school.nz. Ngā mihi Tracey Wearing

As a Board we are due to hold mid-term elections in December 2020. Boards of trustees must hold elections for parent and staff representatives. Havelock School Board elections run on a staggered (mid-term) election cycle; this helps to ensure that there are always experienced members on the Board. To make up a School Board of Trustees, parent trustees are elected by the school parent community, Staff trustees are elected by Staff members and then the principal is also a member of the board with additional trustees coming on as coopted members. Meetings are held twice per term and are a great opportunity to get along and see how things are run. Once the Board have set an election date, papers will go out to all parents. If you are interested in being part of the Havelock School Board, please feel free to come along to a meeting and keep an eye out for updates regarding elections.
Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa. We should work together for the wellbeing of everyone.
Kind Regards
