Term Three has started with a hiss and a roar! I would like to welcome; Tarati Ward, who has just turned five and started in Kaituna; Nevie and Hunter Hay who’ve joined Kaituna and Wakamarina; and lastly Mrs Lisa Hooker, who has filled the teaching position for Pelorus for Term Three. A warm welcome to you all, we hope you enjoy your time at Havelock School. Before I go on to tell you of some of the exciting events coming up this term, there are a few people I would like to acknowledge for their recent efforts in and around our school. Firstly, thank you to a special team of people who’ve volunteered their time, prior to and during the holidays, to tidying up our school grounds; Wendy Fletcher and Fred Pretty have been busy planting grasses (don’t they look great) on the mounds surrounding the playground. Given time we hope these plantings will grow and fill the gaps. Also, thank you to Floss and Micheal Brownlee for building the retaining wall where the old entrance to the playground was. We’ve ordered some native trees to finish this area off nicely and hopefully attract more birds in time. Another thank you goes to the Friends of Havelock School for the recent Mid-Winter Disco they held in the hall. The kids had a blast and by the sound of it, so did the adults! Recently, I have been meeting with whānau to discuss the way we approach Taha Māori at Havelock School. I am interested to know what you think we already do well and what areas you think we could strengthen. If anybody is interested in contributing to this review, I welcome your thoughts, so please feel free to call the office to make a time to meet with me. Some key events to look forward to this term are: Pelorus Cluster Cross Country - we’ve already started to practice, you may have seen us out and about running part of the Waterfall Track. Feel free to join us if you would like to boost your own fitness. We generally run at 12:30pm each day, Monday -Thursday. Maud Island Wildlife Sanctuary Trip - A lucky group of seniors will get to do an overnight trip on Maud Island, sponsored this year by The Gallery Havelock. Weekly Hockey sessions - After school on Tuesdays, kids can stick around after school to participate in hockey skills and drills. I still require another set of hands to assist if anybody is willing, no experience necessary. Thanks to Vanessa Bryant, who has managed to round up a Year 7/8 boys basketball team to compete in the Marlborough Winter League, starting this Friday at Stadium 2000. Team players are: Dean M, Tane, Ben, Jake, Hamish and Tayo. We wish you all the best! If anybody would like to put their hand up to help coach these boys during school lunch breaks that would be greatly appreciated. Ngā mihi nui

Tena Koutou katoa, Welcome back to term 3. We would like to extend a special welcome to all staff and whānau new to our school community, we hope you enjoy your time here at Havelock School. As you are aware, the Board of Trustees have begun the process of appointing a new Principal for our school. Thank you to those parents and whānau who took the time to complete the short survey that was sent out in Term 2. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know what you think are the most important attributes in a new Principal. The information received will be collated and used to inform our decision around the qualities we are looking for as we move forward in this process. As a board we have contracted Neil Wilkinson to advise us during this time. Neil is an NZSTA Endorsed Consultant, who has many years of experience in both the Principal appraisal and Principal appointment procedures. We would also like to extend our thanks to Tracey Wearing for stepping into the role of Acting Principal for term 3, Tracey comes with a great deal of knowledge, passion and enthusiasm in all aspects of education and is highly committed to ensuring the smooth running of the school for the term ahead. Please join with us and support Tracey throughout her time in the role of Acting Principal.

Wakamarina

We are lucky to have a student teacher Miss Parnwell in class for 5 weeks. She recently did a science experiment and this is what they found.

Why did Hubba Bubba win? As a class we concluded that Hubba Bubba was the winner as it had a higher gum base compared to the other brands of gum.

toni@havelock.school.nz

What gum produces the biggest bubble? The gum that produced the biggest bubble was Hubba Bubba.

How does gum base effect bubble size? Gum base affects the stretchiness of gum. The stretcher the gum, the bigger the bubbles.

BLACK PEARL CLEANS UP IN THE TE HOIERE SEAGULL FLEET BREAK- OUT RUN. Saturday the 27th of June saw several keen Te Hoiere Seagull fleet members assemble at the Havelock launching ramp for the Break -out Run on an overcast & cold day. A briefing of the rules & course , blessing of the Fleet, by the Bishop, quick scramble into the boats and the start signalled by the harbour Master Steve and the Fleet was on their way, well some were, Shady Lady was stuck at the launching ramp, with an un-cooperative motor, plenty of advice from onshore spectators and with help from Karl support crew, the motor burst into life and the chase was on to catch the rest of the fleet. OCR streaked ahead of the fleet, with Ant, Black Pearl, Mae Bee, Fryan, Rhino, Wing- it, Wai-Naki, Ruby K, Krusty Krab & Shady Lady racing to catch up. Krusty Krab was the first to break down in the channel, with support boat beside him. At the end marker one of our flash support boats powered by 225hp Johnson outboard, with Dave & happy snappa Sandra, was stationed and taking videos of the fleet passing the last beacon. Ahead of the fleet the OCR & Mac 1 support boat with Linton & Trish our 2nd happy Snappa followed the progress of the leading boats. Following the middle of the fleet was Cooch, with skipper Bruce, crew, Ally & Penny giving the fleet encouragement and support. First to arrive at the bridge and around the pylons was OCR, streaking ahead down the river, followed by Ant, who picked up seaweed around the prop and stopped, allowing the Black Pearl to pass. The middle order of the fleet changed several times, with the Shady Lady passing several boats, giving the Krusty Krab the royal salute as she passed him, broken down again. Into the rushes and heading towards the marina was the OCR, Black Pearl, Ant broke down, Mae bee & Shady Lady chasing the leader’s home. Heading towards the entrance of the launching ramp, OCR, stopped and resorted to oar power, allowing the Black Pearl to motor pass, followed closely by the Mae Bee, Shady Lady & OCR both headed for the finish and with an executive decision, came 3rd equal. Wai-Naki came in 4th, followed by Fryan, then Krusty Krab & Ant towed in by the support boats, first time entries Wing -It, Rhino our mussel float boat and rear end winner Ruby K saw all the fleet home. A lot of laughter while the fleet boats got pulled out of the water, on shore waiting for the fleet was the Scoby Doo, a 50 year old hydro plane, which the skipper Wayne ensured everyone, it will be on the water for the next race. Up to the Havelock Hotel for after -match function and prize giving for the fleet & supporters and blessing of the food by the Bishop. 1st boat home: Black Pearl, 2nd Mae Bee, 3rd equal OCR &Shady Lady 1st team: Black Pearl,2nd Mae Bee ,1st Lady: Shady Lady Best presented boat OCR, best dressed fleet member OCR skipper Ian, Best Flag: Wing -it.
