The FOHS Bacon wrapped Mussel Kebabs were a hit at the Mussel Festival!

Kia ora koutou We’ve had a busy few weeks since the last newsletter. We spent the week prior to the Mussel Festival getting creative with mussels; turning shells into beautiful butterflies; adapting a nursery rhyme to include our very own mussel man and modifying mussel buoys to create a car towing a catamaran, full of teachers! See pictures in the following pages. You may have also spotted our top field at school filled with camper-vans during the Mussel Festival weekend; this has been a successful fundraiser we’ve run for the past 4 years and not to forget the famous bacon-wrapped, mussel kebabs that the Friends of Havelock School stall sells on the day. All in all it was a successful week of mussel madness! Following the Mussel Festival, two of our students took part in the Weetbix Kiwi Kids Tryathlon in Nelson. Well done to Isla and Rose for representing Havelock School, once again. Last week we had a visit from the Education Review Office, who came to check on the progress we’ve made since they last came at the end of 2019. This was a very successful and positive experience. We anticipate that by the end of this term, or the beginning of Term Two, we will have their formalised reports to share with you. Nga mihi Tracey Wearing Recipients of our Week 7 Assembly awards

In Kaituna, we have been continuing our learning about habitats and animals. Over the past two weeks, we have focused on New Zealand native birds. We have created sunset bird art and a collaborative class display of New Zealand's native birds.

WAKAMARINA WAKAMARINA ENJOYED MAKING OUR MUSSEL FESTIVAL WINDOW DISPLAY. THE CHILDREN SHOWED GREAT TEAMWORK AND LEADERSHIP. CAN YOU GUESS THE POPULAR NURSERY RHYME WE USED?

MUSSEL

FEST

Two weeks ago we prepared an entry for the Mussel festival. In Pelorus we made a boat towing a car. It was really fun making these. Thanks to Jim and Jason forPelorus the time and effort they put into helping us create them. It was great to see the end results after utilising our donated recycled materials.

Pelorus Area Health Trust

News from Havelock Medical Centre: Pricing: Patients with a

Community Services Card receive a discount on general

consultations. The cost of a consult (not treatments) reduces to $19.50 per visit for those people that hold a CSC. Patients have to apply through WINZ for this card. https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-zbenefits/community-services-card.html if you would like more information. It does not discount the cost of a prescription – we have reduced the cost from $26.00 to $22.00 but this has nothing to do with CSC and holders of that card will continue to pay the same script fee as those without it. The cost of general consultations for those who do not have a CSC or are not part of careplus has gone from $47 to $48.

Enrolments: Havelock

Medical Centre is currently taking new enrolments. This

was paused for 4 weeks over the Christmas Holidays. Unfortunately Dr Bird is retiring this year, so new doctors will need to be trained to work at Havelock. From April we will be placing a halt on enrolments until we have secured a suitable replacement, and we will operate on a one in one out scenario, as we cannot keep increasing patient numbers without a replacement.

Registrars and Nurse Practitioners:

There was a registrar in attendance almost

all of last year with Dr Hodginkson spending quite a bit of her time at Havelock. She has now moved on and has been replaced by Dr Ryo Eguchi. We expect to be able to have Dr Eguchi spend time at Havelock also; once he has found his feet at Springlands. We do also currently have a Nurse Practitioner who just started her placement-based training with us a couple of weeks ago – Lisa is settling in and will hopefully also spend some time in Havelock once she has found her way around our systems here in Springlands.

REAP Marlborough Outpost Facilitator REAP Marlborough is a Government funded rural education provider. It covers a large geographical area from Kaikoura to the top of the Sounds and inland to Wairau Valley, Waihopai Valley, Havelock, Rai Valley, Okiwi Bay and other places in between. In order to adequately address the learning needs of these rural communities REAP Marlborough relies on voluntary outpost facilitators who gauge their community’s needs and facilitate the running of educational programmes. This structure is in keeping with REAP Marlborough’s belief in community self development. REAP Marlborough is committed to ensuring that the outpost facilitators are well supported in their extremely important role. Currently Havelock does not have an outpost facilitator and REAP Marlborough is very keen to work with someone in your community to enable lifelong learning opportunities to continue. If you would like to know more about this voluntary role please contact Ailsa Carey or Joan Clark at REAP Marlborough – 5787848. We would be very happy to come and chat to anyone who may be interested.
