Kia ora koutou What a fantastic start to the year it’s been! We’ve had a great team of instructors from Stadium 2000 who’ve been teaching students a range of fundamental skills with a strong focus on team work and concentration. Such a nice way to ease students back to school. At the end of 2020 we announced a few changes to staff: We have appointed a Deputy Principal, Jill Heaps, who comes to us all the way from Southland and is teaching in the senior class. Jim Baillie has assumed the role of caretaker and Emma Parnwell is now teaching in the junior class. Toni Johnson will be leaving us at the end of Term 1 to take maternity leave (congratulations) and Jacqueline Pretty is now teaching in Wakamarina. We also have many new students: Evelyn Te Amo, Tessa Bond, Cruiz Abraham, Tamati Mullions, Titan Polamalu, Aiden Bailey-Gatchell, Kayden Robertson and Taina Kingi are all in Kaituna. In Wakamarina, we welcome Tyler Payton and in Pelorus Josh Johnsen. We wish these students all the best for their transition to Havelock School. At the end of 2020, Skye Gatjens was the deserving recipient of the Flying Dolphin Sky Dive Award, sponsored by Ted Culley, Sanford Ltd, in conjunction with KiwiCan. To be in the running for this award, Skye had to share how KiwiCan has impacted her life outside of school. She shared ways she has applied the KiwiCan values; Respect, Resilience, Positive Relationships and Integrity to her netball season. A few weeks back Skye and I both leapt out of a plane at Abel Tasman Sky Dive. It was an exhilarating experience as we got to experience falling through a thick layer of cloud with no reference to which way was which. Thanks Ted Culley and KiwiCan for providing this opportunity for one of our senior students to step out of their comfort zone and tackle such a challenge. During the holidays there have been many people volunteering their time for our school, working tirelessly behind the scenes and I’d just like to say thank you. FOHS have been busy coordinating a theatre fundraiser which was a huge success; Rob Kerr has volunteered his skills and expertise, renovating our school house in preparation for our DP to move in; Jim Baillie organised for the MENZShed to repair our damaged picnic tables; Lucie Thompson and Amanda Smith kept our vege gardens under control and Mark McGowan has been maintaining the swimming pool. Your time and effort does not go unnoticed, it is much appreciated. Back in December, members of the Havelock Museum Committee organised for a special sign to be erected at the base of the Rimu tree that was planted by the late Sir William Pickering. Havelock School is very fortunate to be able to lay claim to taking part in the education of two prominent scientists; Pickering and Rutherford. We have a lot of wonderful qualities amongst our students, be it sport, academic or holding strong values. We know all of our tamariki are destined for success. Nga mihi Tracey Wearing

KAITUNA MONARCH BUTTERFLIES It has been a busy two weeks in Kaituna! During the mornings, we have been learning about Monarch Butterflies. We started with 4 eggs, and we now have 3 baby caterpillars! Kaituna decided on Jackson, Aroha, Kaituna and Casey for their names.
