Kia ora koutou As the weather continues to improve we are getting closer to opening the school pool. However, we’ve had a number of hold ups with the repair of the pool solar panels that were damaged back in July’s nasty storm. Unfortunately, we are still a fair while away from this being sorted. On a brighter note, we have been very grateful to receive grants from within our local community to improve the swimming pool area. Back in July the school received confirmation that the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival approved our grant application for funds to contribute to the shade sail, that shelters community members from the sun while supervising young swimmers. More recently the Pelorus Area Health Trust and The Lions have contributed significant funds toward the purchase of a new Solar bubble pool cover. This has been ordered, however is manufactured in Auckland so there is a significant delay on delivery. Thank you to all who have contributed to the improvements in the school pool area. We truly appreciate your generosity. Another grant that the school has been successful in applying for is the MDC Creative Communities Scheme, which provides funding for local arts, in our case a school mural. We are very fortunate to have a local artist, Vicki Parker, on our Board of Trustees. Not only is Vicki committed to putting her time into applying for all these grants to improve the school and benefit the community, she also has the creative flair to work with students in designing and painting the mural. Coming up, in mid-January, the administration block at school is getting a makeover. The current access to the admin and reception area does not flow. We’ve found that visitors new to the school often become lost. The upgrade proposes to create a very visual pathway leading to the reception area, as well as a new principal access ramp. The mural Vicki will do with the students will become part of this and will create an Page inviting entrance to the building that will visually guide visitors to the correct entrance. We are also working on a new school logo that incorporates our school values; Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, which will be displayed in the new reception area as well as around the school. Aspects of the current logo will still feature in the new look. Lots of exciting changes are in the pipeline, watch this space! Ngā mihi Tracey Wearing
