FOHS DISCO On Saturday evening the Friends of Havelock School (FOHS) hosted a disco. It was a great success with 53 students attending. We had 2 hours of fun with music, games, and a jellybean guessing competition. A special thanks to FOHS and other parents who helped make it happen. We were so pleased to be able to make this happen for the kids.

Kia ora Firstly, a warm welcome to Bill and Catherine Partridge who have recently joined us in Pelorus and Wakamarina learning areas. We wish you all the best in your learning journey at Havelock School. We received some exciting news on Friday 18 June, Mrs Johnson and her husband, Chris, together with their daughter, Zoey, welcomed the arrival of their new daughter/ sister, Pippa Olive Johnson, weighing a tiny 6lb 11oz. Pippa was delivered via a planned C-section. Both mother and baby are doing well. Last week was a busy week for staff, engaging in work that goes on behind the scenes, so to speak. We had a visit from the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) regional practitioner, who came to assess how much progress we have made in embedding our school values with positive reinforcement, since we began in Feb 2020. The report we received specifically highlights the strengths of the implementation at the school. In addition, areas have also been identified for future direction and/or planning considerations. Key areas identified with significant growth were management and commitment to embedding PB4L School wide strategies, as well as teaching the expectations for behaviour. Our next steps are to ensure we have consistency amongst staff so that we can collate more robust data, to inform future decisions. Our Senior Leadership Team also attended the Ministry of Education roadshow, to learn about changes coming up with education. This lead nicely into our first Localised Curriculum Hui, where we made plans with external leaders, to strengthen how we cover the NZ curriculum. Be prepared for upcoming opportunities to share your community voice (via surveys and community consultations), so that we can ensure the curriculum we provide atprincipal Havelock School is unique to our community and environment, to provide the best outcomes for our tamariki. A key takeaway from the MOE Roadshow was the concern Page regarding poor attendance across schools in New Zealand. Did you know that if a child has had just one day off school per fortnight (90% attendance), they will have missed a whole year of school by the time they reach Year 10? Alarming isn’t it. You can view your own child’s attendance data on the HERO app. We’ve also celebrated Support Staff week recently by showing our appreciation for the essential work done by our caretaker, cleaner, administrator, teacher aide, parent volunteer and librarian with a shared morning tea and messages from the kids. Our support staff contribute in many ways to the success of our school. They go the extra mile on a regular basis because they know ultimately it benefits the kids. So, thank you to Jim, Ketrina, Mandy, Selena, Rachel and Rita. We couldn’t do it without you. Mrs McQuarrie says good morning when we are late.

Candidates for Outward Bound Every year the Havelock Lions Club arranges sponsorship for a young person aged between 18 and 25 to attend a classic Outward Bound course. Funding for this comes from the Lions Club and from First Light Trust so that any young person who lives in or has been educated in the Pelorus area can be selected. The course runs for 21 days and during this time our candidate will experience all outdoor elements and activities Outward Bound has to offer including sailing, kayaking, bushcraft and navigation. However, the most important aspect of the course will be the realisation that our candidate can rise to the challenge realising his or her potential and learning that, with perseverance, dreams can be achieved. Our candidate will: 1. Challenge him/herself and push limits 2. Reflect, discover what is important to them and determine their future direction 3. Learn about themselves from both success and failure to take their confidence and motivation to the next level 4. Discover what it takes to create effective relationships and be part of a successful team 5. Develop a stronger sense of personal responsibility in responses to real and challenging situations. During this week it would be a good idea to spread the word about Men's health and encourage all the men in your life to take a look at the following web site devoted to this health week. Encourage them to take the "What's your Score?"
