Kia ora Last week Havelock School hosted the Pelorus Cluster Speech competition, with the support of Ian and Hazel of Havelock Lions, who came in to judge. It was great to see the enthusiasm from contestants who delivered their speeches on a range of topics, evoking a range of responses from their audience. It’s no easy feat standing in front of a crowd, speaking on topic for the correct amount of time, while ensuring you maintain eye contact, use your voice and hand gestures for effect and most importantly remember the words! But these kids made it look simple! Congratulations to all winners across the four schools who entered. Below are our Havelock School students who were placed, and their topics: Meah Bryant (Y5) - 1st place - School Passion Projects Josh Jonsen (Y6) - 3rd place - Logging - Is it really that bad? Lily Thompson (Y7) - 3rd place - Homework does more harm than good! Leo Langley (Y8) - 1st place - Should you get the Covid Vaccination? A couple of weeks ago the Year 7 and 8s were fortunate to sneak in a trip to Rainbow Ski Field for a fun-filled day of skiing and snow boarding. Thank you to their teacher, Jill Heaps, for pulling this together at short notice, since the original booking was canned due to lockdown. Also, thank you to Jim Baillie and Sharmaine Kerr for assisting with transport and supervision for the day. The kids had a fantastic day. All students pushed themselves out of their comfort zones to take challenges and fully participate in an adrenaline filled day. Comments from the teacher were that she was so impressed with the way students supported each other and shared their own learning to enable the less able to continue to participate. Great to hear! See pics on next page!

principal I wish you all an enjoyable term break and look forward to students returning for an already jam-packed Page Term 4!
