MANDEL JCC ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT AND CEO

A Strong Foundation Since our founding in 1948, our mission has been to provide opportunities for our community to connect, learn and explore through exceptional programs and services. These quality programs are the foundation for our physical, intellectual and spiritual well-being. The J’s core values are reflected in our welcoming space where everyone is invited – from the sunlit atrium lobby, to our warm and dedicated staff. Through our engaging fitness and lifelong learning programs we connect people in meaningful ways. Our early childhood programs offer a critical foundation for the community’s youth by teaching friendship, respect and caring that instills a basis for ethics and creates positive relationships. As a 5 Star Step-Up-To-Quality program, our staff help children learn, grow and flourish in an environment filled with play and exploration. We use Jewish teachings on friendship, respect, inner strength, honoring others and taking care of our community and environment. These themes and lessons serve as a guide for teaching values and morals in today’s world.

The next developmental mark for youth is during school age. Our award-winning, accredited Camp Wise overnight and J-Day camps support youth in developing confidence, gaining independence and learning new skills, all while strengthening their Jewish identity. Our campers create memories of a lifetime, celebrate milestone moments together and build lasting friendships. Recreation and fitness have been at the core of our mission from the beginning. Our modern fitness and aquatics centers serve as a clean, welcoming space for members to enhance their physical and mental well-being. Jewish identity is the cornerstone of our values. We offer the highest quality programs and services designed to engage, enrich and enlighten. Our arts, culture and Jewish life programs provide opportunities for lifelong learning. These thoughtprovoking offerings include our long-running Cleveland Jewish Book Festival and Cleveland Jewish FilmFest.

Through our adult programming, we provide invaluable enrichment learning through a variety of art classes, Jewish cultural programs and history/ current events courses. To meet the vital nutritional needs of the vulnerable senior population, our Lunch Plus program serves hot kosher lunches six days a week. The program brings seniors together for meals as well as connects them to social interaction and activities, health screenings and lectures. Our Men’s Club convenes active retirees for social dialogue and intellectual discussions. The construction of our Beachwood community center was spearheaded by the Mandel family. In October 2019, the Mandel JCC mourned the loss of Morton L. Mandel, past President and trustee. His lifelong commitment to our Mandel JCC has had, and will continue to have, immeasurable impact on the quality of life for children, families and adults over many generations. We will honor Mort and his lasting legacy by diligently working to advance our mission. We invite you to learn more about this extraordinary man on the following page. Beyond bricks and mortar, this space is much more than a gym. The J is a community where neighbors connect, motivate and encourage each other. It is a place that supports the foundation for learning, growing and connecting with our greater community.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which began March 2020, marks an unprecedented time in modern history that has required the best of humanity to overcome. The nature of the crisis has been particularly daunting for all of us. It is threatening everyone’s way of life and is especially difficult for people who rely on the programs and services that the Mandel JCC offers to them every day. Routines have been interrupted and there remains daily confusion about what the future holds. Our challenge is to deliver as much as we can virtually to keep our community engaged, active, connected and healthy. We are very proud of how staff and the community came together to provide virtual communities so quickly to prevent feelings of isolation. We thank our generous donors, funding partners, devoted Board of Trustees and staff, without whom our mission-focused work would not be possible. We are grateful to the Jewish Federation of Cleveland whose longstanding support has been essential to our success. And to our members, we appreciate you and are proud to serve you. You are at the heart of our mission. All of our valued partners are integral links to our ongoing efforts to build, connect and strengthen our community.

Mindy Davidson, Board Chair

Michael G. Hyman, President and CEO

Mort Mandel’s LASTING LEGACY

We mourned the loss of a dear friend, Past President and Lifetime Trustee Mort Mandel, who passed away at the age of 98 on October 16, 2019. Mort’s leadership, dedication and generosity shaped the Mandel JCC for almost 70 years. He was passionate about the vital role of JCCs in building strong, cohesive communities. Myron Guren, first President of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Community Center from its founding in 1948 to 1952, invited Mort to join the Board in its very early years and, subsequently, Mort became his successor as the second Board President. Mort served as Board President from 1953 to 1957 and the rest was history. Mort understood the important role of the JCC to Jewish communal life and took on this challenging role at a time when the JCC was in its infancy. Throughout the 1950s, the JCC operated from five small neighborhood-based facilities. Mort was instrumental in the 1955 decision to purchase property at Mayfield and Taylor roads, which would later become the new location of the JCC in 1961.

By the late 1970s, as the Jewish community migrated further east, the leadership of the JCC recognized the need for a facility in closer proximity to where the Jewish community lived. Again, Mort played a leadership role in the decision to purchase property in Beachwood, which is the campus that is the home of The J today. The viability, vitality, health and vigor of the Jewish community to ensure the continuity of Jewish life was always of great concern to Mort. The Mandel Foundation’s extraordinary grant of $16 million enabled the JCC to renovate and expand its building. The JCC’s name was permanently changed in 2007 to the Mandel Jewish Community Center of Cleveland in recognition of this very special gift. This gift enabled The J to expand programming and increase engagement with families and individuals of all ages. Mort’s lifelong commitment to Mandel JCC and the JCC movement has had – and will continue to have – immeasurable impact on the quality of life for children, families and adults over many generations. May his memory be for a blessing. k"z
