Supporting Competitive Jobs in the Food Sector

After Oak Harvest Kitchen closed, Mandela Partners formed a new partnership with First Presbyterian Church to use their kitchen space for our Re-Generate Opportunity (ReGen) program – centrally located in Oakland.

As part of the 12-week program, we offered kitchen and culinary training, internships with local food business partners, and employment referrals and placement for residents facing barriers to employment, prioritizing individuals returning home from incarceration.

Secured employment for 61% of participants who completed ReGen

People were respectful of others. I really enjoyed the hands-on training... I learned new ways that are safe for working in a restaurant.

In 2022, we increased hourly stipends from $18/hr to $21/hr to align with local living wage standards. We launched an emergency fund for participants to apply up to $600 that covers a range of expenses –including car repairs, legal aid, and rent fees– for individuals reentering their communities.

100% of participants who completed the kitchen training secured their Food Handler's Card
