Editor’s Note Cyprus may be a small island but it’s BIG on talent and we’re lucky to feature two international artists this month: Christos Televandos and Leo Ninelives Romero. You can read all about their achievements and latest news inside this fabulous issue. And who’s excited about the news that Robbie Wiliams and J-Lo may be coming to perform next year? I am eagerly awaiting confirmation, she is one of my biggest heroes. I can finally take a deep breath and look back on what has been one of the most stressful and emotional years of my life. After 20 years I've downsized to a city-centre apartment in Liverpool, all whilst living in Cyprus. It’s a huge life change, and somehow I have managed to keep everything ticking along. Then comes my busiest month of the year: the Liverpool Lifestyle Awards and Liverpool Fashion Week, my daughter's 21st birthday, a networking event and my son's 23rd birthday, all within days of each other. Who needs a quiet life? But there's light at the end of the tunnel. Twelve months in the planning, my long-awaited holiday is finally here. Miami, a Bahamas cruise and a bucket-list trip to New Orleans awaits this month as the summer season comes to a close. I've worked my arse off this year, juggling business, family and a million other things, and now it's time to recharge and enjoy a little of what life has to offer. I'm not feeling guilty about it. We spend so much time working, worrying and looking after everyone else that sometimes we forget to look after ourselves. So, once the events are done, the suitcase is packed and the laptop is closed, it's my time. I may be away from Cyprus this month but it’s always in my heart and I’ll be back soon!

Award-winning Cypriot artist Christos Televantos

"I feel that this event is one of my best artistic moments to date! It is a great award for our own Cyprus, which I believe deserves much more prominence as a culture in the world"

Following his representation of Cyprus in Madrid recently at the 23rd Annual International Song Contest “UniverSong” of the International Organization of European Music Festivals (ORFEUM) in Spain, he was invited to meet the Deputy Minister of Culture. The meeting was held in recognition of his artistic career and the significant international distinctions he has had the honour of receiving while representing Cyprus abroad. They also discussed broader issues relating to support for Cypriot artists, the opportunities and challenges they face internationally, and ways to strengthen the international presence of Cypriot culture. Christos has already represented Cyprus in various international music competitions including London, Belgrade, Vitebsk, Istanbul and other destinations, having won many first prizes and Grand Prix. He studied music at university, majoring in Jazz and Musicals. His musical theatre credits include productions of The Sound of Music, Mamma Mia and Buddy the Elf. He has collaborated with the Cyprus Opera Organisation and studied under composer George Theofanous through a series of masterclasses. He also studied Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Thessaly before fully pursuing his artistic career. He is the first and only Cypriot artist to have won First Prize at Madrid’s Longoria Palace (2024), the headquarters of the Spanish Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers (SGAE) as well as the first Cypriot artist selected to represent Cyprus at Slavianski Bazaar 2023, described in the press release as Europe’s largest international competitive music festival. His long list of accolades include first prize in the Musical category at the international performing arts competition Stars of the Albion 2023 in London and was shortlisted as a finalist in the Best Vocalist category at the prestigious GRAMMY Awards.

Christos said: “The recognition of my artistic journey by the Deputy Ministry of Culture was a moment of particular significance to me. I am grateful for the invitation and the opportunity to engage in this meaningful dialogue. “I would like to continue on this path, with the aim of representing my homeland on the world’s greatest music stages and at the most prestigious international music events, including festivals and competitions, while contributing to the promotion of Cypriot culture abroad. “It was a particular honour to have the opportunity to speak with the Deputy Minister of Culture and share thoughts arising both from my personal journey, which extends far beyond what is immediately visible and is not always revealed in its full depth and all its dimensions, and from my profound desire to represent Cyprus internationally through music.” He maintains an active artistic presence in Cyprus and internationally, representing the country through music and culture on the world stage. The award-winning Cypriot crossover singer frequently schedules regional seasonal live shows, jazz/swing events, and festival appearances (such as his past winter performances at local venues like Ethos Vin Soirée or festive outdoor concerts like Ermou Square in Larnaca. He added, “Representing Cyprus on the international stage is both a privilege and a responsibility. Every time I step onto a stage abroad, I carry my country, its culture and its identity with me. My greatest ambition is to see the Cypriot flag flying at the world’s most prestigious music events and to show audiences everywhere the talent, passion and artistry that Cyprus has to offer.”

DOWNSIZING There comes a point in life when you look around your five-bedroom house, spread over three floors with three lounges and a huge mortgage and ask yourself a very important question. What do I need all this space for? Three of the kids have moved out and we all manage quite well in an apartment in Cyprus in the summer. So last month I sold the huge pile and relocated to Liverpool One. I’m still processing this. I’ve gone from a house where I could practically lose a family member for three days without raising the alarm to an apartment where you can hear yourself think because there’s nowhere else to go. We used to Whatsapp each other around our old house. The storage situation alone deserves its own documentary. Years of clothes, shoes, handbags and beauty products, all accumulated under the very reasonable assumption that one day we might need them, although I had no problem chucking stuff away, The remaining family coming with me, however, appear to have missed the entire point and are emotionally attached to every note book, shoe rack and an assortment of crap I am sneaking out to the bins.

They seem to have interpreted downsizing as relocating the contents of the entire five-bedroom house into a smaller building and expecting me to perform a miracle with the storage. Apparently, everything is essential. Every box, every random cable belonging to an electronic device nobody has used since 2008 that might come in handy one day. One day when? We’re moving into an apartment, not opening a branch of IKEA. But there’s something wonderfully liberating about it all. No endless rooms to clean. No sprawling house to maintain. No need to furnish spaces simply because they exist and best of all I am mortgage free. Now I have a city-centre apartment, restaurants, shops, theatre, coffee, people-watching and the freedom to decide what comes next. Who needs a huge house when you can have a smaller home and a bigger life? When you live in the city centre, there is always somewhere to go, something to buy, somewhere to eat, and absolutely no shortage of opportunities of things to keep you entertained. Of course, the family are seem convinced we need to bring every possession known to humanity, so I may have to stage an intervention involving a skip. But I know what I want from this next chapter: less stuff, fewer responsibilities and more living. It is one of the most liberating experiences imaginable.

I'm at a stage in my life where I don't need a designer handbag, an expensive sofa or a huge house to prove I've done well. I don't need to impress the neighbours or strangers on social media.

I've spent decades working, building businesses, creating magazines, organising events and making things happen. I've had the big house, the nice things and the lifestyle. I'm not downsizing because I've failed to achieve something. I'm doing it because I've realised I don't need to keep proving that I have. I'm not downsizing my life. I'm downsizing the stuff that's getting in the way of living it. More stamps in my passport, fewer hours with a hoover. More living, less cleaning, and absolutely no guilt about it. Getting older has a funny way of making you realise that time is your most valuable possession, freedom is the ultimate luxury, and nobody on their deathbed ever wished they'd spent more time cleaning a bigger house.

LEO NINELIVES ROMERO

“I've lived nine lives, but this is my best one yet. The sentiment of this song captures the spirit perfectly.: embracing life, appreciating the present and knowing that the best is still to come as I am home.”

his new single, ‘Spiti’, bears his soul and opens his personality to a track that promises to capture his fans’ attention.

.Known for his tribute performances of Rag N Bone Man, Phil Collins and Teddy swims, Leon has now released his much anticipated album , Thirteen: Wrong Impressions, which has been ten years in the making. In between entertaining holidaymakers around Cyprus in the summer and touring round the UK in winter, it’s a wonder how he found the time but he tells us what he has been up to since we last had a catch up. “This season has been briliant and manic and I do quite a lot for the forces now. I am in Paphos once or twice a month now too,” he said, adding, “All audiences are great and I am lucky enough not to have a bad gig, touch wood. I just enjoy what I do.ˮ Talking about the album, he named it 13 because people always get the wrong impression of him. He said, “When they meet me, they look at me a bit warily because i am heavily tattooed and a bit loud and hyper functioning and don’t know how to take me but Iʼve always been a nice guy.ˮ Thirteen is his lucky number and stands for M for mother, whom he was always very close to before her death. “It’s a very personal album, “ he said, “Threʼs a lot of songs on there whcih are very relatable but I really overshared on the album.ˮ Spiti is the first single released on the album and Leon says, “When I first moved to Cyprus 6 years ago, apart from falling in love with the island, I felt everything changed and I felt I had come home. Cyprus has got a way of doing that to you.” The song was written from my experience of coming to cyprus and Spiti is cypriot for “home” and no, I donʼt think I will ever move from here as itʼs the first place I have got a mortgage and I have my Cyprus family here now.. My friends are the family I choose and thereʼs a song on the album about that too but I am not releasing that just yet.ˮ Spiti is currently trending in Cyprus and UK apparantly now and despite being offered a record label he wanted the independence to make his own decisions on his musical journey. He said, “I didn’t think they would fit in to where I wanted to go as an artist and I didnʼt want to be pigeonholed into what I was allowed to sing or how I was supposed to look like, so the first album is released independently on Spotify and maybe the second album wonʼt be, but I wanted this album to be done my way because I get out who I am.

right from the start. I am bearing my soul, this is where I come from and who I am, this is how I lost my mum, this is how I ended up on the streets, I mean i was homeless at 15. The whole story of that is in the song, The Streets Don’t Sing NO Lullabies. Then Ghost is about my mum and how she has become my inner dialogue, I am very spiritual and know she is around me.ˮ
