Doesn’t time fly?

As I write this I have just returned from going to order my twins school uniform, it only feels like yesterday when I was bringing them home for the first time and now I will be taking them to school in a few short weeks. People keep telling me that I will have more time from September and that I should be looking forward to them going to school. But I don’t see it that way. Of course I am happy for them to be taking on new challenges and they are talking non-stop about going to school so at least they are happy about the massive change that is about to befall us. One thing however has changed already, and that’s a very good thing. I am viewing the long stretch of summer in a different way than I have since I left education myself, many moons ago. I am planning endless days in the garden, strawberry picking, days out to the beach, picnics in the park, swimming and visits to cinema and theatre, the list is endless. I am going to make this, and every summer throughout my boys childhood something to remember, something to look forward to and something to cherish. Childhood is a gift, and I feel so privileged to join my kids along for the ride. No longer will I moan about the rain – we will put wellies on and do like Pepper Pig and find a muddy puddle. There is so much going on in Liverpool this August there will never be a day of boredom. Let’s celebrate childhood in the manner it is intended, with hubris, frivolity and lack of guile. Their childhood isn’t over, it’s just changing. But for now, let’s enjoy the summer, have ice-cream for dinner and eat burnt burgers dressed as pirates.

Jennifer, you first wrote Ab Fab back in the early 1990s but they’re very resilient characters. In your industry, you must meet them all time? All the time! They’re still going on. I keep thinking, ‘Surely there’s other ways of doing PR,’ but it’s still the same. Honestly, it’s quite extraordinary. The other day I got a really unusual massive invitation to some party and I thought, ‘I thought those days were gone.’ I thought everything was done by the Internet now. But still this ridiculous thing came, like a Rubik’s cube, an invite to some fashion show, and you just go, ‘I can’t believe it’s still happening.’ I suppose as long as there’s products, there’s going to be PR. Would you go on a night out with Edina and Patsy? Jennifer: I think they’d be horrible. They’re so into each other, in a way, and into their own little world. I don’t know how much actual fun they’d be. I’d be them going out for a night – that would be much more fun. To be Edina and Patsy going out for a night would just be fantastic. Joanna: Oh I would steer so clear of them! (laughs). But, I think at the very beginning it would be quite a buzz. Ab Fab been shown in 36 countries and It was a huge hit in France too. Why has it been such an international success? Joanna: Isn’t that extraordinary? Sometimes I used to wonder about how they did the subtitles, and how they would translate what we were doing. Sometimes they’ve tried to dub us, which doesn’t really work, because you’ve got to hear the way we are speaking, but people get the humour, because a lot of it is visual comedy. It’s funny but you can see what’s funny about it. It’s a very visual show and it’s very beautiful to look at. Harry [Banks, production designer] again has done the most extraordinary job. He transforms places. The house that we used for Edina’s place, when we went there, the floor was black and there was nothing in it. It was like a big empty, rather grand, marble-clad barn. So it was ‘how will this look like Edina’s kitchen?’ Then Harry gets to work and he makes the floor white, he brings the stuff in, he has the flower arrangements, which is where Eddy’s money goes – flower arrangements that would bankrupt Moyses Stevens, but she’d have them because she wanted them. She wanted a swimming pool the size of that so she dug into the neighbour’s house next door. This is funny, all this cartoon stuff. Joanna: Do you still love playing Patsy? Oh, I love it. I adore her, because she is so unlike me but I know her. She’s the sort of polar opposite of me, which makes me really happy to own her, because I’m not her but she is mine, if you know what I mean. Sometimes things come along, maybe you’re directed to do something, 12

and you go, ‘I don’t think she’d do that,’ because you know how that person is. All actors take care of their characters, w h e t h e r they’re good or bad, or it’s a small part, or anything, you guard your character because you’re the spokesman for your character, and so you want to keep that absolutely true and right.

What can we expect from your Fusion Festival performance, do you have any surprises or tricks up your sleeve? We have played fusion before and it’s always an amazing vibe! We have been on tour since the beginning of the year so will be bringing some tricks from there! Who from the line-up are you most excited to see? I grew up on Music from Busted! Also excited for Jason derulo! Have you been to Liverpool before? If so what do you love about it the most? Whenever we play shows in Liverpool they are always up for it! Cannot wait to come back to an amazing crowd! If you could have anything on your rider what would it be? What is on your actual rider? All the usual things are on our rider, food, drink, footballs etc. However our request for paintball guns has still not come true. What is your favourite thing about performing at a festival? You get to see a lot of different artists and get more inspired by their performance! Also seeing happy faces makes my day!

jamie lawson shoT To worldwide fame afTer a chance meeTing wiTh ed sheeran catapuLted his music career. jamie will be appearing on The fusion sTage on The saTurday - here he chaTs abouT whaT fans can expecT and who he’s Looking forward to seeing Live.

What can we expect from your Fusion Festival performance, do you have any surprises or tricks up your sleeve? I think my set is very similar to the album in terms of sound, at least that’s what we try and replicate, but there will be some songs from my 2nd album and a couple of new songs in there too, so if you’re a Jamie Lawson fan there should be a few treats in that way for you. Who from the line-up are you most excited to see? Louis Berry and Ruhksana Merrise. Louis is from Liverpool, so it’ll be great to see him do his thing in his home town. I expect it to be one of the best gigs of the whole festival. I’m yet to see Ruhksana play so I’m very excited about that, we met in Copenhagen I think and became instant friends, I loved her last EP so it’s great to finally get the chance to see her play. Have you been to Liverpool before? If so what do you love about it the most? I’ve been a few times but I don’t think I’ve ever played in Liverpool, I might be wrong, I have a terrible memory. Obviously it’s musical history is huge, one of the best in the world, without even being very conscious of it the music of Liverpool has influenced me hugely. If you could have anything on your rider what would it be? What is on your actual rider? If I could have anything on my rider it would be bad food that was good for you! Healthy chocolate and cake full of vitamins. How has no one done that yet!?? What’s actually on my rider is bad chocolate, crisps, some fruit, and a few beers for the boys in the band to drink as I generally don’t. What is your favourite thing about performing at a festival? Connecting to new people. It’s a great chance to play to people who have gone to see someone else and hopefully steal or share a few new fans. There’s always an exciting party atmosphere at a festival too, I’m sure Liverpool will be no exception.

After Almost A decAde in the wilderness crAig dAvid is bAck in the charts and he’s appearing on stage At the fusion festivAl on sAturdAy 3rd. we chAtted to him About whAt the crowd can expect and if he has any surprises up his sleeve for this amazing festival at otterspool promenade

What can we expect from your Fusion Festival performance, do you have any surprises or tricks up your sleeve? A party! My TS5 set is all about bringing good vibes and good times. It started out as a pre-party at my home in Miami, and I’m so happy to now be able to take it to places all over the world and hit up the good people of Liverpool at Fusion Festival! Expect some old school bangers dropped in my set as well as my own songs - new and some of the classics of course, with a bit of a refresh! Who from the line up are you most excited to see? Hyped to see my boys Krept and Konan. I actually jumped on stage as a surprise guest when they played at Brixton earlier in the year. I caught some of their show before I went on and the reaction they were getting from the crowd was insane. They’re a huge part of this grime scene which is on fire right now! They’ll smash it. Have you been to Liverpool before? If so what do you love about it the most? It’s been a while since i’ve been up in Liverpool – I can’t wait to bring my TS5 set up to a city which is so known for it’s incredible lively music scene! If you could have anything on your rider what would it be? What is on your actual rider? I’m a huge chocolate fan - gotta have some Dairy Milk on there. I try and keep quite fresh before a show and tend to stay clear of alcohol, chocolate is my main vice! What is your favourite thing about performing at a festival? Before this year I hadn’t played any festivals - so it’s mad that I have the chance to get to play so many amazing ones this year! I just love the interaction with the crowd, seeing everyone smiling and singing along I vibe off that.

Well done on hosting the BMD:Law Fashion and Beauty Awards last month, did you enjoy it? Thank you, yes I loved it. It was a great night and everyone really enjoyed themselves. You looked amazing on the night. Do you have a beauty secret, and if so are you willing to share it? Haha there is not secret, but I do look after my skin and I have regular facials. I keep the condition of my skin up by doing by skin regime twice a day too. I also train 3 times a week and do hot yoga and eat healthily - well for the majority of the time I eat healthily, I love chocolate and wine. But life is all about balance I think. Are you working on any projects at the moment? Yes, I’m working on my own swimwear line which I have have been working on for a while now. I plan on launching it soon, it’s called Runway by Amanda Harrington. It’s a 12 piece capsule collection and I’ll be launching it in Majorca, Marbella and Liverpool. Wow, that sounds exciting. What gave you the idea to create this collection? And what was your inspiration for it? It’s just something that I have always wanted to do, and I just feel like now is the right time in my life and career to do it. My inspiration for it is the 1990’s super models. I have named each piece after one of them; Naomi, Christy, Cindy, Kate etc. It’s high end glamorous resort wear for the jet set. So far the capsule collection has been created, however, once I have tested the water with it I plan to expand the collection further by adding kaftans, beach pants, hats, flip flops etc.

Bringing glamour back to swimwear, I can’t wait to see it. Do you have any images yet so we can have a sneak peak? Ah no sorry, it’s all very hush hush at the moment. I’ll be doing the shoot abroad soon, so once I have those images there will be some exclusive shots available then. Do you have a shop lined up already to take the collection in Liverpool? No, I have a distribution company lined up who will be dealing with that. I’ve had lots of interest from different shops but I want to keep it really exclusive. I will be very selective of where I will be stocking my brand. Where can people find out about the collection once it’s launched? All the latest news will be on my blog and my website. Runway has its own Twitter, Instagram and website so all the info will be on there, and also on all of my social media. So watch this space! Sigh No More

Never at risk of appearing stifled, stuffy or traditional, Chalice Media is proud to present its post-apocalyptic adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies Much Ado About Nothing at St George’s Hall from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th August. Much Ado About Nothing. Considered by many to be one of Shakespeare’s best comedies, the play tells the story of young lovers Hero and Claudio who are to be married in one week. To pass the time, they conspire with Don Pedro to set a ‘lover’s trap’” for Benedick, an arrogant confirmed bachelor, and Beatrice, his favourite sparring partner. Meanwhile, the evil Don Jon conspires to break up the wedding by accusing Hero of infidelity. In the end, it all turns out to be “much ado about nothing!” The performances will take place in the stunning surroundings of The Concert Room at the iconic venue as part of the ‘Where There’s a Will…’

Shakespeare Season launched to mark the 400th Anniversary of the Bard’s life and work. A highly successful performance run of Macbeth, set in a dystopian future, launched at the same time as Walking The Bard and was swiftly followed by a stunning, steam-punk adaptation of The Tempest, followed by Romeo and Juliet which was given the Prohibition-era Speakeasy Treatment. So without further ado, I’d urge you to book your tickets now and celebrate the comedy genius of The Bard by this uniquely entertaining theatre company! GANGSTERS, KIDNAP AND DIRTY LAUNDRY Have you ever wondered why dry cleaning takes so long? Well writer Fred Lawless has, which is why he started writing A Fistful Of Collars which is at Liverpool’s Royal Court this month. It is a story about a canny group of girls who decide to start a dress hire company using the clothes that are brought in to them to clean. The show was first at The Court in 2010 when it brought the house down. The theatre’s Executive Producer Kevin Fearon loved the show and felt that, after six years, now was the time to bring it back. Fred, who is best known for writing the Court’s wacky Christmas shows each year, picked up his pen and dug the script out for a review. “A play may well have been written and performed, and the playwright may well believe they no longer have to work on it again, but then the phone will ring and a theatre will tell you they want to stage it again. “It would of course be very easy to hand over the script without looking at it and tell the theatre to get on with it, but our egos generally get the better of us and we’ll always have a quick read of it, if only to

...the phone will ring and a theatre will tell you they want to stage it again Fred Lawless

remind ourselves how good it was. And that’s usually when we spot the words, the lines, the sentences and even the pages that don’t look quite as good as the last time we read them. It’s at this point that we sit down and start to re-write the play. “Since ’Pharaoh ‘Cross The Mersey’ finished in January that’s basically what I’ve been doing, so those of you who came to see ‘A Fistful Of Collars’ in 2010 may now spot a few changes. Most of my re-writing I think will go ‘under the radar,’ but I hope that any changes you do spot will increase your enjoyment of the play.” The audiences that have seen the play so far have had a great time so it looks like Fred has done a great job. It’s a play that will have you laughing so hard that your sides will need invisible mending. A Fistful Of Collars runs at Liverpool’s Royal Court until 20 August.Tickets start at just £13 and are available on 015 709 4321 or royalcourtliverpool.com

THE LOST GARDEN DESIGNED TO INTRIGUE AND INSPIRE in the community and inspire’, and the garden elements are now being created by service users at New Directions sites throughout Sefton. New Directions will also have a stand at the show selling beautiful gifts for the home and garden all of which have been expertly made and hand finished by various day service teams. The stand has been designed to have a vintage feel and New Directions staff are busily putting together the finishing touches and looking forward to the show when they can welcome visitors to the stand and let them see the creativity and high quality products that are available year round.

New Directions day services are excitedly joining forces to create a special garden for this year’s Mediterranean-themed Southport Flower Show. The services which are for people with support needs due to disability and age related conditions across Sefton and West Lancashire entered a garden in the famed flower show last year and were delighted to win a silver medal at their first attempt. Needless to say they are determined to replicate their success and be a winner again this year. Service users and New Directions staff have been working away creating an even bigger and better garden design for this year’s 4-day show.

Their entry is based on ancient Greek mythology and is titled The Lost Garden of Atlantis. The stunning design will depict a new beginning for the fabled city which will be shown rising from the Mediterranean. The garden will feature a spectacular sculpture of Poseidon, a scented front hedge and low-level feature planting designed to reflect the ebb and flow of waves.

The Southport Flower Show is one of Merseyside’s major annual events and the largest Independent flower show in the country. It attracts up to 10,000 visitors throughout the four days of the show. Held at Victoria Park in Southport, this year’s show is to be held on 18, 19, 20, 21 August. If you would like more information about New Direction services or would like to talk to someone about career opportunities then contact Dave Hughes on 0151 934 3726.

The design team at New Directions had a vision to use where possible recycled materials. This has resulted in their creating fencing from reclaimed pallets and a beautiful mosaic water feature has been made from broken tiles. The entry is designed to ‘intrigue

NEON E H T H C IT D O T TIME by Natalie Morris We are Well and truly in full sWing into the festival season come rain or shine and this season’s festival fashion has taken a diverse direction compared to the stereotypical colourful dress code What We have been used to.

Say goodbye to neon colours, denim hot pants and fringing which has over powered the fields of music over the years. Floral headbands are no longer a necessity but still so many people are wearing them that a festival outfit would not be complete without a festival halo

Your festival wardrobe should be your survival kit with essentials to ensure that your festival experience is easier. Envision a more comfortable but stylish look with slouchy jumpers, a hardy pair of shorts and rubber hunter wellies. You need to be able to dance energetically, walk for miles without getting wet and being in pain. There’s nothing more appropriate to convey comfort than sportswear wearing your Zadig & Voltaire tracksuit for cooler nights and days. Or Adidas running shorts with a mother denim personalized sweatshirt accessorized with super-sized earrings, wire framed aviators and slick back hair. Unpredictable weather condition calls for practicality this season so be sure to incorporate splash proof patent fabrics whether that be the ultimate festival essential; the rain mac.

This month’s statement piece; Isabel Marant silver metallic lame boiler suit perfectly signifies festival apparel and displays an example of comfort and sportswear in a fashionable approach. Concluding my research on this seasons festival trends proves that fashion is very versatile as although it’s viewed as a visual aspect, fashion can also be incorporated into practical activities catering for all weather conditions.

up after a swim DON"T GET When people hear Top Don’t forget to reapply after swimming the word S ‘ ummer‘ BAKED THIS or having any contact with water. Even or ‘holiday‘, they though a sun tan lotion may say it’s SUMMER probably think of bikini‘S, ice cold ciderS and Sand in between their toeS. i think of theSe thingS too.

But more often than not, the first thing I think of is Sunburn Back when I was in my early twenties I suffered severe sunburn. So, in honour of Sun Awareness week, and with a little help from the folks over at the British Skin Foundation, I have put together all the tips you need to protect your skin this summer!

Take Shade Breaks

The hottest hours of the day are from 11am to 3pm, so make sure that during these hours you rest in the shade, even if it’s just at short intervals. Cover yourself up

Take into consideration your skin type. If your naturally a very pale person or have sensitive skin, you are going to be much safer starting off with a higher factor. The BSF say we should be buying a lotion with protection SPF too, they recommend SPF 30 or more in order to protect against harmful UVA

According to the British Skin Foundation, we need to be wearing a big hat when we are sat in the sun. A hat will protect the bits we probably forget about, such as our neck, ears, scalp (burnt scalp is the worst) and let’s not forget the face. It’s basically a great excuse to go and treat yourself to an oversized fedora!

Apply it early

Keep hydrated

Choose the right Suntan Lotion

38

Water Resistant, this doesn’t mean that you can swim in and out of the water all day without it having any effect on your lotion application.

Don’t wait until your about to walk out the door before you apply your suntan lotion. BSF advise applying it around 30 minutes before you head out into the sun so that your skin can absorb it properly. By leaving it till your about to be exposed you run the risk of sweating it off straight away and the lotion wont have time to sink into your skin and begin protecting.

It is very important to keep drinking water when you are in the sun. In extreme heat your body sweats out all your water, which not only lowers your SPF protection, but it dehydrates your body which can lead to sunstroke. Always carry a bottle of water with you during the summer season.

LIVERPOOL’S NEW FRIDAY NIGHT OUT IS A FRIDAY NIGHT IN EvErything thEsE days is thE nEw somEthing, but now thEy arE tElling us staying in is thE nEw going out? Apparently the majority of people in Liverpool (71%) prefer to stay in at the weekend and further more over half of people in Liverpool (62%) have turned down a social event to save money. Gone are the days where Friday night was all about getting ready to hit Seel Street for a night of clubbing. Liverpool’s new Friday night is all about swapping stilettos

for slippers and a cosy night in front of the TV. New research from the AA* suggests that the vast majority of people in Liverpool (71%) like to spend a Friday or Saturday night in, opting to catch up on the latest Game of Thrones or Britain’s Got Talent, rather than go out with friends. This compares to just 15% of people in the city who regularly go out clubbing. It is no secret that recent austerity has made us thriftier, which could be why we’re choosing cheaper ways to have fun and avoiding big nights out. Over half of people in Liverpool (62%) have recently turned down a social event to save money. However, many are still partying beyond their means with over one in ten (14%) of people in Liverpool

using credit cards to fund a night out and around one in ten admitting they dip into their savings for weekend spending. Michael Johnson, Head of Financial Services at the AA, said, “It’s easy to get carried away with spending when you’re on a night out, especially with the ease of contactless. Setting yourself a budget for weekend spending at the start of each month, or taking cash out rather than relying on card is a good way to keep track of your spending when you do finally tear yourself away from the latest boxset.”

W o m e n o n ly Wear Their TWo Fav o u r i T e B r a s o n ‘ h e av y r o TaT i o n ’ Own up, do you wear just TWO pairs of bras on heavy rotation? If so you are not alone, resent research shows that millions of us British ladies wear two bras on rotation. It’s not like we don’t own more than two, it’s just that there is nothing more comfortable than that grey washed out brazier that we have owned for years – you know the one, when we put it one we can’t even feel that it’s there. In a survey of 2,000 women, over a third admitted that despite having an array of bras available, they tend to stick to their favourite couple. While three in 10 have been wearing their same two pieces of underwear for over TEN years. A further 31 per cent have pushed a bra to the back of the wardrobe after realising the under-wires dig in and 20 per cent admit they haven’t worn lingerie which was bought on impulse. The problem of course is in the fitting. When did we last actually venture in store and get measured? Let’s face it – who has the time, or inclination to whip our breasts out in the changing rooms on a Saturday when we have the kids with us? But because we’re not getting properly fitted for the right bra, for whatever occasion we want to wear it for apparently one in 20 women are still wearing a bra they bought over 20 years ago. Or even worse – not buying new underwear at all and making do with the raggety bras we already have – which takes us right back to the beginning of wearing two bras on rotation.

And while wearing a limited set of bras on rotation has been shown to correlate to badly fitting lingerie, it could also be due in part because so many of us don’t want to plump up, push up, plunge our cleavage when we are visiting Tesco, or dropping the kids off at a party – us ladies are not preferring to go for the more natural look – at least for every day wear. In this survey, 81 per cent of ladies say they don’t like their chest to be on show, and would rather their underwear made them look a nice shape, and most importantly, contained. A further 50 per cent want their underwear to fit their lifestyle or wardrobing needs – whether this is making them feel confident for a meeting, attractive for a date or motherly when looking after the children. But the truth is bras don’t last forever:

they do have a life span. Therefore, the danger of wearing two bras on rotation for a lengthy period is you risk losing fundamental qualities of your bra, like support, over time. Plus, technology and trends are constantly evolving meaning bras that you may have had 10 years ago are certainly not the same as today.

We Are ScientiStS juSt Announced A mAmmoth uK tour thiS Autumn, folloWing A feStivAl fuelled Summer, And Will be mAKing A Stop At liverpool ArtS club on WedneSdAy 19th october.

The New York boys have got ex-keyboard player Max Hart back on board, following a stint packing out arenas alongside Katy Perry, for new album Helter Seltzer. The bands fifth studio album sees them placing a preened pop sound, over their usual chaotic indie style, releasing the video for the new single ‘In My Head’ alongside their 24 UK date tour at the beginning of the month. With a back catalogue spanning ten years, including tracks from the indie landfill days of the early noughties like ‘Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt’ it’ll be a chance to catch what new material they have to offer. Live, the indie-rock group double as a comedy act. Bonding when they first met over a love of comedy, Keith and Chris are notorious for their chats; you could call them skits, with the audience between songs. You’ll go from singing at the top of your lungs, to crying with laughter before the night is through. Fitting with the bands energetic and sometimes impulsive nature, every gig promises to be unique. They are anything but predictable, changing up the set list, getting the audience involved, and generally creating a party with your pals. You can catch We Are Scientists at Liverpool’s Arts Club Wednesday 19th October.

With the whole country blaring grime left, right and centre this year, rapper and actor Kano will be taking to the Liverpool Arts Club stage on Thursday 25th August. You might recognise his face from the successful Channel 4 drama ‘Top Boy’, but he was making tracks about his home town of East London long before starring in the gritty show about the area. Kano dropped his fifth studio album in March, ‘Made in the Manor’, which went straight into the UK charts at Number 8. The grime veteran left fans waiting six years for new material, but enlisted vocal talent from Damon Alban, Giggs, Wiley and JME to create an album full of eloquent social commentary, that re-establishes Kano at the top of the grime game. His live shows so far this year have proved a huge success and his show at the Arts Club will surely play into the grime MC’s hands, able to be up close to the audience, in the kind of atmosphere where he’s honed his incredible lyrical skill over the last decade. After releasing fourteen albums over three decades, Ed Robertson (guitar, vocals), Jim Creeggan (bass, vocals), Kevin Hearn (keyboard, guitar, vocals) and Tyler Stewart (drums, vocals) show no sign of slowing down, and ‘BNL Rock Red Socks’ is the bands second release in a year, as 2015 also saw them put out the pinball-machine inspired ‘Silverball’. lifestyles music columnist

One LOve by: martin Quirk

DJs always get askeD ‘What is your favourite type of music?‘ and i alWays give an honest ansWer.. "all the good stuff that i haven‘t heard yet". it‘s a bit of a conversation stopper, Which is sometimes, but not alWays, the point, but it is also absolutely true.

One of the many life-affirming things about music is that throughout our whole lives, if we want to, we can constantly find new music and new forms of music that we will love and take great pleasure from. The immortal Duke Ellington, one of the most respected musicians, composers and cultural icons in music history said that there are really only two types of music; good music and bad music, music that ‘works’ for us and music that doesn’t. But when people ask that question, what they are really asking for is a classified definition of your taste by which they either can or can’t identify with you. It’s human nature to classify and quantify and

put everything and everyone into an easily relatable pigeon-hole. We want to understand things, but we’re lazy, or too busy, and prefer convenience. But if you think about it, most of the music in every single genre that has ever been concocted, without exception, is, at best, sort of just, well, mediocre. The expression ‘all killer and no filler’ has been around as a ready-made marketing slogan for so long for a very good reason. So, to reply to the question about your favourite kind of music with the name of any particular genre is to say that your favourite music is mostly forgettable mediocre rubbish. I must spend hours every week searching and researching on Spotify and You Tube, browsing through artists and albums and playlists for good ‘new’ music, most of which has already been around since before I was even born. There is good music and bad music in every genre and from every cultural background, exactly as it is with people. The problem is we’re all only too willing to accept and adopt other people’s pre- judgements instead of making our own.

PETEPRICE ‘LATE NIGHT CITY’ SUNDAY - THURSDAY 10PM TO 1AM RADIO CITY 2 & RADIO CITY TALK

I’m so excited to see the cruise ships coming back to the Port of Liverpool where they rightfully belong. In my early

years in catering I worked on the Empress of Canada – in those days the traffic of ships in and out of our port was truly amazing with a melting pot of people to add to

1) Flint Male Voice Choir– I was very privileged to go to the press launch of Jimmy McGovern and Colin McKeowns ‘Reg’ – a 90 min drama about Reg Keys. This was shown before the Chilcot Report. The choir sang live before the showing and in fact were featured in Reg – an unbelievably powerful piece of drama 2) Jennifer Hudson – Oscar Winning Actress and Singer was in Liverpool recently – we worked together on the Alan Titchmarsh Show – it was great to see her again 3) Charlie – I’ve got a new friend – can you believe a pet fox? – which does fetch the ball when you throw it

LIVERPOOL’S BIGGEST STAR. PETE PRICE....

Inducted Into 'The Radio Academy Hall of Fame' 2014 the recipe. For years we have been in the doldrums…but now through the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson, and his team we are back as one of the main destinations for cruise ships. Which incidentally each one is reportedly bringing in £1 million to the Liverpool tourist industry

4) Andy Cooke – After interviewing Merseyside’s new Chief Constable I am delighted to say in my humble opinion, Merseyside is in safe hands once again. 5) Tim Roth – Reservoir Dogs, Rob Roy, Pulp Fiction, Planet of the Apes and a BAFTA – it doesn’t get much better and what a nice man! – I’m privileged to spend time with him 6) Brandy – I’ve been a fan of this American singer/ songwriter for years – I saw her on Broadway in Chicago – her wealth of experience on stage is second to none. Her stage presence comes with time and she has now mastered it – she was telling me about her lovely friendship with Whitney Houston

Guests were treated to a hog roast, free prosecco bar and cocktails from Corky’s Schnapps. Erica Wildflower designed an exclusive and stunning Ibiza swimwear collection for the night and teamed with milliner Janice Charles with a fabulous hat collection

Amanda said “It’s a huge achievement for small businesses to celebrate such a long time in service and shows that with passion and dedication you can achieve anything. We’d like to thank all our clients for the support they have shown us over the years.”

CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY

Hello Lifestyle Readers, I hosted the Dreamcar Event at the Croft Racing Circuit in Darlington last month which featured more than £50m of super and hypercars and gave guests the opportunity to take an exhilarating ride around the track. Also in attendance were Geordie Shore star Vicki Pattison and TV presenter Jason Bradbury, along with stars of the popular TV show Police Interceptors. Rides in the prestigious McLaren P1 GTR were also auctioned throughout the day in aid of NSPCC. It’s been a very car-filled month for me as I was also in attendance at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome for the 10th anniversary of their Supercar Event. As you can see from the picture, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! As well as offering passenger rides in supercars around the famous Top Gear track, there were a host of rides and attractions to keep visitors young and old occupied and all funds raised went to the Children’s Trust which, I’m sure you’ll know, is a very worthy cause.

I also attended an event on behalf of Checkatrade and Suffolk Trading Standards who joined forces to host an Open Day at Ipswich Football Club. Checkatrade founder Kevin Byrne took to the stage to discuss the company’s partnership with the organisation and the founding principles of the company. After the presentations, there was plenty of opportunity for Q&A sessions so attendees could have all their queries answered. As always, I have given you one of my DIY tips for you to try your hand at. If you need any more useful advice, I shot a range of videos on behalf of Silverline Tools which can be found online at www. youtube.com/user/SilverlineTools1.

All the best,

Tiled external steps can sometimes be a trip hazard in wet weather conditions. A great way of making your tiled steps a lot safer in bad weather is to fit an aluminium non slip tread to the edge of them. These can be purchased from most DIY shops at various lengths and grades. Using your tape measure, measure your step transfer to your aluminium angled trim and cut to size. There are two ways of cutting these - one is by using an electric chop-saw (always use safety specs or goggles) with a metal cutting blade or by using a hand-held hacksaw. I would recommend using a chop-saw if you are doing a number of steps. If it is only one step level I would use a hacksaw. Hold the trim over the edge of the step using your pencil; mark the step through all the pre-drilled holes on the trim itself. Remove the trim, and then using your hammer action, drill with your 6mm masonry drill bit, drill into your pencil marks . Apply the 6mm plugs, place the trim back into position using 8mm screws and your drill driver, and screw the trim down so it is nice and firm. Repeat this to all screw holes. Once you are happy with the one trim that is in place, repeat this process on as many steps as you have.

the last Word Celebrating 100 issues and still no.1 The rule of three applies to everything in life. Luck runs in threes (I dropped my phone, drowned my laptop and pronged the car all within a three week period, I organised 3 events in one week recently) When you’re running a business there are three elements to make it successful. The first one, obviously is having a product or service that is of benefit to someone else. The second thing is to advertise it, for there is no point in having that product or service if nobody knows it exists. The third thing is to market yourself with some PR. The benefit of working with #amandamosspr is that you benefit from being able to advertise in Lifestyle magazine, you are advised on ways of marketing your business and of course I become your PR manager. Public relations is separate from sales. But back to advertising in the first instance. The purpose of the ad is to attract a reader and gain their attention sufficiently to read it. And then to maintain the interest that by the time he has finished the page he believes it will work. Attract. Read. Believe. The power of three yet again. Moving onto marketing, this is the central function that will make your business tick and encompasses sales, advertising and promotion. Can you see a pattern following here? And finally PR. From raising media awareness to generating business leads, PR is the final link in the chain. But not everyone gets it. Some people expect that when you hire them to do PR you are going to open the floodgates for sales. No. What PR does is open the floodgates of opportunity for sales, it is up to you to go out and secure those sales. Public relations is the bridge between your business and your sales clients. It’s letting people know who you are before they’ve met you. Reputation is everything and precedes many business deals. All organisations, no matter of the size, can benefit from PR. Advertising is not a new concept, it’s been happening for thousands of years. Town Criers were established

for the purpose of advertising. So Hear ye, hear ye, the magic of three will bring success to thee. I wish you all a very happy and prosperous summer holiday. Be memorable

NOT JUST TRAVEL NORTH WEST

Advertising is everywhere. You can’t get away from it. But to be successful in advertising you have to be memorable. Take McDonalds for example. Love or loathe their restaurants they are the experts in reinventing themselves, redesigning the layout and changing the style often. So it comes as no surprise that Not Just Travel North West is rebranding. Their new stylish logo reflects the fact that their company offer more than holidays (which, may I say, they do exceptionally well) As the name says on the website, it’s Not Just Travel, they reach out

66

to the entire lifestyle industry. Branding is way more than a logo. It’s your message to your customers, your social media followers, and your entire reputation is involved in defining your brand. Branding promotes recognition which in turn puts people at ease. It’s like wearing your favourite jumper over and over again. Your brand sets you apart from your competition, you need to stand out from the crowd, you need to be unique, you need to be in vogue and you need to grab people’s attention. When a company spends time building a brand it encourages motivation amongst staff. Teams like to know their management

ABTA No. K9413

have invested in the company, they take pride in being part of that brand which encourages greater productivity. A well known brand instills confidence in their customer, they know what to expect, they know the level of service they will get. Lifestyle magazine is no1 and going strong. Amandamoss pr’s slogan is Be Memorable. Not Just Travel North West are rapidly becoming the first choice for people wanting quality service without scrimping on style. Follow their brand, They’re going places.
