All parents have a sacred and legal duty to ensure the safety of their children at all times. When parents allow their young children to go to shul/cheder/school/shops, they must ensure that those children are either mature enough themselves to undertake such a journey unaccompanied, or ensure that those children are accompanied by a responsible person. Parents who know their children well should be capable of deciding whether their child is mature enough. There will be children who are mature enough to go by themselves, but nevertheless are not mature enough to accompany younger siblings etc. For the safety of your children, you must be absolutely sure of the child’s maturity/capabilities before you allow them to undertake journeys unaccompanied. CROSSING THE ROAD Children must be given explicit instructions as to where they may cross the road and be extensively trained to cross the road safely. Normally, even an extremely competent child will not be able to cross the road safely with more than two siblings etc, i.e. holding each one by their hand. Children should always set out in time so that they are not under pressure when walking the streets and crossing the road as undue pressure can also be dangerous.
