Dear Resident

Important information about your green recycling bin During this year we have seen a huge increase in people putting the wrong items in their green (paper and card) recycling bin. As a result, numerous truckloads of recycling have been rejected and treated as general (grey bin) rubbish instead of being recycled. When recycling loads are rejected it wastes everyone’s recycling efforts and huge sums of public money. This is because general rubbish costs £90 more per tonne to dispose of. Over 850 tonnes of green bin recycling has been rejected in the last 6 months. This has cost us over £75,000 that could have been spent on other essential services. This is a serious issue in Bury and across the whole of Greater Manchester, so Bury Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester have teamed up to call on all our residents to help fix this problem. Sadly, too many green bins contain all sorts of things they shouldn’t do. For example, household rubbish, plastic bags and plastic packaging, unwanted electrical goods, sanitary towels and even dirty nappies. As a resident of the Borough of Bury we are asking you to make sure that you only recycle the right items in your green bin. 12

You will already have received a bin-shaped information leaflet through your door and a reminder sticker on the lid of your green bin. These remind you that we only want clean paper and clean cardboard in your green bin. To help with enforcing this, our bin collection crews are now inspecting and checking green bins. Any found to have other things in them will get a red ‘Bin Alert’ sticker and will not be emptied. If this happens to you, you must remove the wrong items before your next scheduled collection. If you need help with recycling phone our information line 0161 235 5555. Or if you think you need an extra green bin visit bury.gov.uk/requestabin Please understand that this action is necessary to prevent recycling from being rejected and to avoid wasting substantial amounts of public money in these very difficult times. Please help us and your community by only recycling clean paper and clean cardboard in your green bin.

Only clean paper and clean cardboard goes in your green recycling bin (nothing else). Thank you
