His warm and approachable style, together with his unshakeable belief in every person’s potential, has had a profound impact on those with whom he has worked. Recently, he graduated from ‫כולל נחלת אליעזר‬, the Rabbinic Training Academy (London) and has now returned to Manchester to found ‫ישיבת בנין אדם‬.

THE INVASIVE WEED GIANT HOGWEED FOUND LOCALLY IS VERY DANGEROUS. Hogweed looks quite pretty - white flowers clustered in an umbrella-shaped head that is up to 80cm in diameter. Look for a thick green stem spotted with dark red which varies from three to eightcentimetres thick. According to national trade body The Property Care Association, the plant’s sap is extremely toxic to human skin in sunlight, making it a danger to public health. Hogweed is said to have been responsible for toxic boil and burns on children who have been hospitalised as a result. Growing up to five metres tall, its sap contains toxic chemicals which react with light when in contact with human skin, causing blistering within 48 hours. Effectively it prevents the skin from protecting itself from sunlight, which can lead to very bad sunburn and scarring.

1. ‫ חז''ל‬did not allow ‫ – חמץ שעבר עליו הפסח‬Chometz which was left over Pesach to be eaten or to have any benefit from it. This is as a ‫ קנס‬for being ‫ עובר‬on ‫בל יראה‬ ‫ובל ימצא‬. 2. The ‫ איסור‬applies even if one was ‫ עובר‬only ‫בשוגג‬. In a case of ‫אונס‬, it depends on the various circumstances. 3. ‫ חמץ‬that was sold ‫ כדין‬to a ‫גוי‬, is ‫ מותר‬after ‫פסח‬. 4. Many ‫ צדיקים‬and ‫ גדולי תורה‬were ‫ נוהג‬to be ‫ מחמיר‬even if the ‫ חמץ‬was sold to a ‫ גוי‬before ‫פסח‬. Many ‫ מדקדקים‬are ‫ נוהג‬like this. 5. This year, that even those who usually are ‫מקפיד‬, find it difficult to be ‫מהדר‬, one may certainly be ‫ סומך‬on the ‫ עיקר הדין‬and eat ‫ חמץ‬that was sold to a ‫ גוי‬before ‫פסח‬. 6. Regarding flour that was sold to a ‫ גוי‬over Pesach, one may certainly be lenient.

Open Letter to Acknowledge Machzikei Hadass Mashgichim During these challenging times the public has become more aware and appreciative of people doing certain jobs which have until now gone somewhat unnoticed. In particular, attention has been drawn to “frontline” and “critical” workers, such as NHS staff, utility engineers, truck drivers and refuse collectors, amongst others who keep vital services in operation. I would like to draw attention to all our dedicated Kashrus Mashgichim whom, whilst going somewhat unnoticed, are very much “frontline” and “critical” workers doing vital ‫ עבודת הקודש‬in ensuring the Kehilloh has a steady supply of Mehadrin kosher food throughout. At the point in time when many were reluctant to leave the relative safety of their homes and when domestic and family responsibilities increased, with children off school and Pesach to prepare for, our mashgichim have stood up to the challenge and continued doing their duties ‫לצורך הציבור‬. Though the catering and simcha food industry has unfortunately been very quiet, other areas of the kosher production have been extremely busy. With immense ‫ סייעתא דשמיא‬the hard work invested by the Kehilloh offices and staff has paid off and we were able to supply sufficient basics such as meat, poultry, fish and milk to ensure nobody had to do without over Yom Tov. In the days running up to Pesach our mashgichim have kept constant control of all our bakeries, keeping an eye on the lighting of ovens, ‫הפרשת חלה‬, checking eggs, monitoring ingredient supplies etc etc. This is as well as regular kitchen Hashgocho and ‫ בדיקת תולעים‬etc and constant visits, day and night, to all licensed premises and additional pre-Pesach jobs such as checking lettuce for the residents of Beenstock home for their Seder. Towards Pesach our fish mashgichim between them checked approximately 20,000 fillets of fish for the various shops under Machzikei Hadass Hashgocho. Every single fillet is individually inspected for scales, and yes, in all the pre-Pesach mayhem some fillets were discovered without skin on and had to be rejected. From after Rosh chodesh Nissan, our team of milking mashgichim between them supervised the milking, collection and processing of over 100,000 litres of fresh milk. Our unique and genuine ‫ השגחה תמידית‬requires a team of several mashgichim to be out on the various farms at 4am and 4pm daily, even on ‫חול המועד‬. In the run up to Pesach, our shechita team oversaw the shechita and kashering of some 500 cattle and around 40,000 chickens as well as turkey and hens. Each Machzikei Hadass chicken goes through the hands of at least 8 mashgichim before it is ready to go to the butcher shop! And in the kashrus office the phone lines were constantly busy with tens of queries coming in daily regarding all areas of kashrus as well as Pesach and chometz questions. I take this opportunity to commend each and every one of our staff for their hard work and many hours, including overtime and unsociable hours, that were graciously invested behind the scenes to make all this happen. The Machzikei Hadass Rabbinate join me in wishing all Mashgichim continued ‫ ברכה והצלחה‬in their ‫ מלאכת שמים‬as well as in their personal life ‫ מתוך בריות גופא ונהורא מעליא‬together with all the Kehilloh. Machzikei Hadass once again facilitated the sale of Chometz to a ‫גוי‬ before Pesach. This is done every year on behalf of three main sectors. 1. Members of the public for their private chometz 2. Machzikei Hadass licensees for chometz used under Hashgocho 3. Various large shops and food distributers. The Mechiras Chometz is done twice, once before bedikas Chometz for those requiring ‫ מכירת י"ג‬and once on ‫ ערב פסח‬for those requiring ‫מכירת י"ד‬. The actual sale is a complicated procedure and as Machzikei Hadass Rabbinate want to ensure that there is no ‫ הערמה‬whatsoever, every possible ‫ קנין‬is incorporated. The transaction is carefully and painstakingly explained to the ‫ גוי‬to be sure he fully understands the procedure and is genuine about the purchase. This year it was obviously a bit challenging due to the imposed “social distancing” both with regards collecting shtoros from the public and also facilitating the actual mechira. ‫ בסייעתא דשמיא‬and with a lot of effort behind the scenes by the Machzikei Hadass office staff, the Rabbonim fully succeeded with all the relevant arrangements.

MACHINE MATZA DISTRIBUTION The MH machine matzas were once again baked this year ‫בדקדוק ובהידור רב‬. The production was completed ‫ בס"ד‬just before the Corona Virus hit Eretz Yisroel and was fortunately not affected. The team of 15 mashgichim was led by Horav EP Levy ‫ שליט"א‬of the Machzikei Hadass Vaad HaRabbonim and Rabbi Y Abenson - Kashrus Director, who travelled specifically for this purpose. Shipment back to UK however took longer than usual and we were growing increasingly concerned as day by day the delivery date was knocked further back. ‫ ב"ה‬the matzos arrived in good time and distribution went smoothly with additional staff being called in to assist and ensure all relevant social distancing rules could be preserved at all times. Whilst the several ton of matza we made was sufficient to cover all orders, there were many more requests than usual this year due to many Kehilloh members making Pesach unexpectedly. We would like to thank all our customers who happily reduced their order by one or two boxes in order to ensure everybody else who needed was able to make Pesach with sufficient Mehadrin matza.

MARRIAGE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE Machzikei Hadass is in the forefront of registration of marriages for the Kehilloh. The last few years has seen a large influx of people moving into the area resulting in many more marriages taking place ‫בלי עין הרע וכן ירבו‬. There are regular enquiries at the Machzikei Hadass marriage registration office and the intricate details of the necessary process is clearly explained as it has to be done online and people are helped to deal with this. People who are unable to deal with online registration are invited to attend Machzikei Hadass Marriage Registration Office where all the necessary arrangements are made. The legal procedure requires both parties to be in the country for 9 days and then attend the Local Authorities Registrar to give notice of their intention to get married. The notice is then put up as banns. The notice certification is available after 28 days. It is therefore required that the ‫ חתן‬is back in the country at least 37 days before the wedding. As soon as an engagement is announced and the date of the ‫ חתונה‬is fixed the notice can be given, so it is best for the ‫ חתן‬to give notice before returning to his learning, if he is leaving the country. At the present time owing to COVID-19, marriages are not allowed, and Local Authorities Registry Offices are closed, hence appointments for giving notice cannot be made. As soon as the restrictions are lifted Machzikei Hadass Marriage Registration Office will be ready once again ‫ בע"ה‬to deal with this. WE ARE DELIGHTED TO REPORT ON THE

SPECIAL REFUSE COLLECTION ARRANGED FOR EREV PESACH 5780

Three local authorities, Manchester, Salford and Prestwich which serve our Kehilloh, successfully carried out the refuse collections on behalf of the community under very difficult lockdown conditions and we are very grateful for their help. Every year an inordinate amount of arrangements are put in place by many people, generally co-ordinated by Machzikei Hadass with the involvement of the local and heimishe councillors, askonim and others. Historically, when the Kehilloh was located primarily in Broughton Park, a few Machzikei Hadass Askonim discussed the need for an Erev Pesach refuse collection with a local councillor and a yearly collection was duly organised. As the neighbouring Prestwich area which at one time had a large Jewish community began to once again become more inhabited by the Heimish Community, Machzikei Hadass Kehilloh coordinated a refuse collection for Prestwich too.

To avail oneself of this service, residents had to purchase refuse bags and only these were collected. Several years ago, The Jewish Forum campaigned for a free collection and with the assistance of local councillors and later a local hemish councillor, a free collection was instituted. In recent years as the Kehilloh increased rapidly and people were now moving in large numbers to roads under Manchester’s local authority, Machzikei Hadass with the participation of askonim campaigned and were successful in arranging an Erev Pesach collection in this authority too. Erev Pesach 5780 was a unique situation with lockdown announced by the Government only a few days earlier. The Erev Pesach Chometz collections were all in serious danger of being cancelled. Frantic efforts and negotiations were undertaken by the various askonim in coordination with Machzikei Hadass Kehilloh Coordinator Mr Sholom Salzman. BSD the hard work paid off and three authorities carried out the collections, with a few unfortunate exceptions, to the best of their abilities enabling Pesach to be a chometz free to the relief and satisfaction of the Kehilloh.

LAMB SHORTAGE EXPLAINED Our overwhelming success with supply of Beef and Poultry before Pesach was somewhat marred by a severe lack of lamb which has come to be a Yom Tov speciality for many in the Kehilloh. The background to this was the fact that there is currently only one abattoir in the UK where we can Shecht lamb to the stringent standards of the Machzikei Hadass. Unfortunately, this abattoir was not coping with all the issues surrounding COVID-19 and kept letting us down. On several occasions we had ordered the livestock and planned a shechita only to be notified in the last minute that the abattoir is unable to deliver. However we wish to assure the Kehilloh that we have for quite some time been working on securing another suitable location for our lamb shechita. One of the most important requirements is to ensure sufficient space is available so that our

Shochtim can carry out their duties without any pressure or discomfort. The checking of chalofim requires extreme concentration and cannot be done satisfactorily when “up against the wall”. Furthermore Machzikei Hadass is makpid to do a bedikas penim as well as a bedikas chutz on the lungs of every single lamb. This is a time-consuming procedure and is only possible with sufficient extra space. To this end we are now towards the final stages of extending another abattoir close to Manchester that will facilitate all our requirements. We have been involved in every stage through design and building. It is a long process and we must be in constant contact with various Government and Licensing bodies including the FSA, DEFRA, Veterinary Consultants and meat inspectors to ensure everything we do will also meet the relevant statutory WATOK requirements. We appreciate the ongoing support we get from Shechita UK in assisting us with legal advice as required.
