We are the change that we seek.’ Barack Obama It’s a great honour and privilege to be commemorating one of the most significant moments in the history of Greater Manchester; the Peterloo Massacre.

The events that led up to and came to be known as the Peterloo Massacre took place 200 years ago, but it is important that we don’t only remember this as history, but reflect on the loss of the people who died and were injured that day. Those who marched did so for liberty, for hope and representation for all.

This programme of events is inspired by the people and spirit of Peterloo. The themes are Protest, Democracy and Freedom of Speech.

It has been moulded and produced by Manchester Histories, cultural organisations, and the passionate people of Greater Manchester and beyond.

Each event and exhibition is unique. They present different ways of exploring the histories of 200 years ago. They are also curious about the present and the future.

Manchester has always been a radical city, with a history of standing up, speaking out, and fighting back running through the veins of its people. It’s important to remember this.

To reflect on times of struggle, inequality and injustice to make sense of our ever changing and complex society; to ensure we continue to strive for positive change for future generations. It is hoped this programme will give people the opportunity to take part, have a say, question, be more aware of and acquire new knowledge about both the Peterloo Massacre and the world we live in today.

the PETERLOO MASSACRE On 16 August 1819, 60,000 people gathered on what was then known as St Peter’s Field in Manchester to peacefully demand the reform of parliamentary representation.

When troops, including local government forces, charged the crowds, the tragic result saw 18 people lose their lives and around 700 injured. This was to become known as the Peterloo Massacre.

PETERLOO 2019 Peterloo 2019 is a project that is led by Manchester Histories and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Working with key cultural organisations and communities across Greater Manchester we are delivering a programme of activity that combines public events, learning opportunities and creative exploration. peterloo1819.co.uk

Peterloo symbolises public protest, the struggle for democracy and the fight against political repression, at a time when such was the need for economic, social and political reform that ordinary people in numbers never seen before took to the streets.

The Hidden Tableaux’s

Peterloo Massacre 1819 ‘Hidden’ is an ongoing series of photographic tableaux by internationally acclaimed artist and a founder of Rock Against Racism — Red Saunders.

The Hidden Project shines photographic light on great moments in the long struggle of working people for democracy and social justice. The aim of the project, through reimagining those events, is to reproduce important historic scenes involving the dissenters, revolutionaries, radicals and non-conformists who have so often been hidden from history.

The Hidden Tableaux’s Peterloo Massacre 1819 is the latest work by renowned artist, Red Saunders.

Billy Bragg In Conversation Manchester Histories is delighted to welcome Billy Bragg to open the commemorations of Peterloo 2019. Join Billy Bragg and writer and broadcaster Dave Haslam, with an introduction from Young Identity, Manchester’s young spoken word collective.

At a time when opinion trumps facts and truth is treated as nothing more than another perspective, free speech has become a battleground. While authoritarians and algorithms threaten democracy, we argue. over who has the right to speak.

In this short and vital polemic, Billy Bragg argues that to protect ourselves from encroaching tyranny, we must look beyond this one dimensional notion of what it means to be free and, by reconnecting liberty to equality and accountability, to restore the individual agency engendered by the three dimensions of freedom.

The event will be followed by an audience Q&A and Billy will be signing copies of his new book The Three Dimensions of Freedom. Copies of the book will also be available to purchase, with support from Blackwell's University Bookshop.

The Peterloo Photograph Join historian and broadcaster Michael Wood and Michala Hulme, a professional genealogist and social historian at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Clearing out his parent’s house after his mother’s death two years ago, Michael Wood found a box of memorabilia. There were photos, letters, postcards and books that had belonged to his father, whose family had lived in Failsworth in Manchester from the 1720s. Among them was a photograph from 1884 showing a group of eleven Peterloo veterans from Failsworth. Join Michael as he discusses the search for Peterloo descendants, drawing on Michala Hulme’s research into the photograph followed by a Q&A.

Manchester Community Choir Commemoration of Peterloo 1819 Hear the Manchester Community Choir sing songs of protest from around the world.

Manchester Community Choir has been invited to sing in Gallery 17 at Manchester Art Gallery to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre. The event will coincide with the Art Gallery’s Peterloo exhibition Get Together and Get Things Done.

Peterloo Film Screenings The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper.

Written and directed by Mike Leigh, Peterloo is an epic portrayal of the events surrounding the 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history.

From June to August we’ll be screening Peterloo to mark 200 years since this watershed moment.

Greenham Women Everywhere Intimate testimonies of the women who lived at Greenham Common Peace Camp 1981 – 2000.

Rebecca Mordan of Scary Little Girls Productions and co-ordinator of The National Lottery Heritage Fund project has interviewed the women of Greenham Common Peace Camp.

Mordan explains the work and shares anecdotes from these extraordinary campaigners.

Evening finishes with a Q&A with Rebecca and local Greenham women who have contributed to the Greenham Women Everywhere project.

Join our panel of speakers, as they debate whether the root causes of the Peterloo Massacre are already playing out in 2019 Britain.

Soapbox Soapbox will transform Parliament Square in Oldham to create a Speakers’ Corner.

The line up will feature poets, writers, musicians and groups from Oldham Youth Council, Oldham Theatre Workshop and Mahdlo who have been working with writers from Young Identity to explore the themes of Protest, Democracy and Freedom of Speech.

In the current political climate these themes are resonating around the world and Manchester Histories is offering young people the opportunity to be part of this dialogue on our Soapbox platform. Come along and listen to the voices of today.

the Middleton man The film Our Sam follows the story of a teenager, Samantha (a secret poet), who travels around her home town of Middleton observing and writing.

While reading Sam Bamford’s books Early Years and Passages in the Life of a Radical Bamford appears to Samantha and through a series of discussions, we learn about life in Middleton 200 years ago; the poverty, hunger and riots brought on by the ‘Corn Laws’ and industrialisation, the fight for representation of the working class in parliament and the Peterloo Massacre. Samantha brings together the town’s teenagers to find a way they can represent themselves in a positive way to the adult world.

The film screening will be followed by a Q&A.

JuLY 2019 Radical Read This celebration event is inspired

by Peterloo and young people's involvement in protest over the last 200 years.

Bringing young people together from schools, colleges, youth groups and arts organisations, they will present us with poetry, music, theatre performances, stories and more.

Protest Music Protest Music will explore three key themes – Protest, Democracy and Freedom of Speech. Fast forward 200 years from the Peterloo Massacre and these ideas still resonate strongly.

The performance will bring together a community of Manchester-based creative artists – including MC Fox (Levelz, Swing Ting), che3kz, performers from arts and homelessness charity Streetwise Opera, electronic composer/producer Mandy Wigby (aka Architects of Rosslyn) and the Ignition Orchestra, led by Katie Chatburn – to create brand new, original protest music.

We invite you to hear the story of Manchester’s Clause 28 protest march, find out about the history of one of the most important queer publications in Manchester, discover how archivists and activists have been using historical material to share LGBT+ heritage and much more.

A black kingdom may take the place of the white one ‘A black kingdom may take the place of the white one’ Henry Christophe I and The Kingdom of Hayti (1811-1820). A talk by Marlene L. Daut, Associate Professor, University of Virginia.

On 1 January 1804, an army led by formerly enslaved Africans in the French colony of SaintDomingue declared themselves independent and free of slavery forever.

This talk will explore how the leader of a modern black kingdom, 4,000 miles away from England, fought for and helped establish freedom for the Haitian people, in the same era of revolutionary upheaval and state violence that led to the Peterloo Massacre.

Women Power Politics: Connect, Inspire, Learn This is an interactive space for young people in Greater Manchester to get together with grassroots activists, campaigners and women in politics, to connect, listen to each other and to get things done.

An afternoon of dialogue and critical thinking.

This British Council event in partnership with Manchester Histories, is an opportunity for change-makers young and old to work alongside each other, inspiring shared learning to challenge gender stereotypes, engage in political participation and activism and help formulate ideas about what a ‘gender-sensitive’ political and citizenship education could look like. The Get Together and Get Things Done exhibition provides a backdrop to sharing

inspiring UK and international examples that are rooted in women-led activism, the struggle for women’s equal political representation and campaigns for gender equality.

The Song of Peterloo:

a Performance Carolyn O’Brien’s novel, The Song of Peterloo, tells the powerful story of Manchester mill-worker, Nancy Kay.

Desperate to provide for her ailing mother and sensitive son, Nancy is drawn into the agitation for reform. She risks everything to attend a great assembly on St Peter’s Field.

The result of a collaboration between Carolyn O’Brien – composer, Shane Cullinan, and soprano, Claire O’Brien – The Song of Peterloo: a Performance will combine readings from the novel with music from the time, together with newly-created work inspired by Nancy’s story and the brave reformers of 1819.

Come and be part of the crowd on the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre. Join in a moving interactive outdoor event inspired by the spirit of Peterloo and the voices of people today.

Experience spoken word, music, choirs, chants, and songs, remembering all those whose lives were lost or changed forever two hundred years ago. See the newly unveiled Peterloo memorial by award-winning artist Jeremy Deller. At 1.30pm listen to the traditional reading of the names of those who died at Peterloo.

Commemoration event created by Evie Manning (Common Wealth Theatre), Robin Richards (Dutch Uncles), Jason Singh (beatbox and sound artist), Young Identity, choirs, performers and the people of Greater Manchester.

Ellen’s Longest Night Ellen’s Longest Night dramatises the amazing life of Red Ellen Wilkinson, one of Manchester and Britain’s best loved, most iconic personalities.

From poverty stricken Ancoats to one of the world’s most influential women, we visit great events in Ellen's history.

Ellen, stunted by poverty and illness, had a fierce intellect and fun loving empathy that endeared her to the public. A relentless commitment to social justice and female equality making her our first woman Minister for Education.

The performance will feature images and video of the events. Written and Directed by Nakib Narat.

Black & British David Olusoga In Conversation David Olusoga OBE is a historian, broadcaster and film-maker who also became Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester earlier this year. He is well known for his Bafta-winning TV series, Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners, co-presenting the BBC’s remake of Civilisations and for A House Through Time.

David’s recent book and TV series Black and British: A Forgotten History is a wide-ranging and important project that explores Black British history from Roman times to the present day within the context of national and global history. It provides a brilliant focus for the themes of protest and freedom that will be discussed at this event.

If you are unable to book online, Manchester Histories will be based in Manchester Central Library on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Fri 7 Jun - Sat 17 Aug 2019, where there will be a member of the team to assist booking tickets for Peterloo events.
