SUFFRAGE IN WW1

During the First World War, the main tone from the WSPU was sympathetic towards the war as Pankhurst ordered for all militant activity to be paused. However, not all suffrage activity in Manchester did stop as in 1915 the United Suffragists met in Manchester slums increase awareness amongst working class women about the need for the vote and in Ancoats there was a frequent ‘Votes for Women’ movement. This shows that even though national interests were with the war effort, Manchester remained an important hub for social change. This does not mean that all the Mancunian women who continued to campaign for the vote were against the war, the 1917 MSWS annual report confirmed there was prominent campaigning between young women who were working in munition factories due to them being irritated at the government for not being included in the provision clauses for a future franchise bill.

However, the WSPU leadership saw

cooperation during the war as an important move if they were to be enfranchised after the war, the probability of a future election was central to politics between 1915-1918 and therefore it was important for women to be seen as a favourable inclusion to a future extension of the franchise. The Liberal Asquith who was previously been unfavourable to women’s suffrage rhetorically asked, ‘how could we have carried on the war without them?’ This indicates that women’s support during the war was a big reason why they gained the vote and of course this stance was led by Pankhurst, a Mancunian.

SUFFRAGE IN MANCHESTER The city of Manchester holds a crucial space in the history of suffrage- the movement where women campaigned for their right to vote. Manchester became a key city for this activism, shaping the future of women’s political rights in Britain.

Many Mancunian women were known to advocate for social reform such as Emmeline Pankhurst who particularly focused on women’s suffrage with her organisation WSPU which stood for The Women’s Social and Political Union. This Manchester originated group worked by having branches working on their own initiative, one of which organised the 1913 Manchester Art Gallery outrage and a local campaign of putting ink down letterboxes. Even though the WSPU began in Manchester, the organisation spread nationwide and at the end of 1913 the newspaper ‘The Suffragette’ revealed that year there had been 337 Suffragette incidents, proving Manchester’s historic importance as a movement which began here locally expanded into an important issue for women on the other side of the country.

A Queer History of Manchester

Manchester is considered one of the most inclusive cities in the UK, its acceptance and love for the LGBTQ community is demonstrated throughout the decades starting in 1964 where campiagns for homosexual equality was born.

Alan Turing One saddening aspects of the fight for LGBTQ equality is time.

In 1952, renowned scientist Alan Turing was convicted of "gross Indecency" due to his Gay Identity. Alan turing is honoured in society as breaking the Nazi code but sadly remembered for the discrimination he faced because of something he cant control. A statue of Turing now lies in Sackville gardens accompanied

by Transgender and HIV memorials, forever representing how far Manchester has come.

The gay Switchboard was created in 1975 due to constant police raids, the community reacted with strong backlash to this, and it was clear that depsite decriminalisation in 1967, real acceptance was going to be hard to achieve.

Gay Village As the city has chnaged over time, the LGBTQ community has claimed some areas of the city as a safe space for them, one of these spaces is, as it is known today, Gay village.

The street was claimed after the decline of the cotton industry and left abandonned. sex workers and gay men alike would then make it into a hub for homosexuality, opening bars and pubs for queer people to feel included and seen, like napoleons (1941).

Much action was taken in the 80s to ensure that progress would continue, including a pride festival in 1985, aimed at raising funds for Aids/HIV victims being descriminated against. the event would reach new hights in 2003, during Euro pride, hostng 37,000 people. In 1986, europes first purpose-built gay center was Built in manchester.

Multiple charities have been set up to support the gay community over the years, since the 1985 fundraiser festival, the festival would continue, changing names over the decades from "manchesters Mardi Gras" in the 1990s to "gay fest" in the 2000s. The charity, Manchester Pride, would come into effect in 2007 aimed to help all LGBTQ+ causes.

20,000 people protested section 28 on the 20th Febuary 1988, an act that would aim to set back the progress the LGBTQ community had made by prohibiting schools from teaching about the acceptance of homosexual relationships. This was one of the biggest LGBTQ+ protests to take place in the UK, with everyone gathering at Albert Square.

due to the significance changes in accpetance of the LGBTQ+ community and the multiple law and policy changes that protect them against any hate crimes, manchester has become a home for pride.

Football is embedded into Manchester. Recognisable through two monumental clubs who project the identity of the city into the wider world, embracing rivalry and respect whilst performing at the highest level. For the people, football shapes everyday life, a sense of belonging and a shared interest with those around them, celebrating success, new signings and beating their neighbours.

Founded in 1878 Manchester United is recognised as one of the most famous and well-known clubs in the world. With a capacity of 74,000 within their stadium Old Trafford, the club welcomes millions of supporters year-round, there to embrace the culture, support the team and celebrate the history of the club. Stemming from Newton Heath, formed by railway workers, the club’s identity is close to many within Manchester, from a working-class football team to one of major success and identity. The club made strides in the football world under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA cups, 4 League cups and 2 Champions League titles. Holding the record for the most Premier League titles, the club is still to this day recognised as one of the biggest clubs in the world, even within an era of dominance from their ‘noisy neighbours’.

MANCHESTER UNITED FOUNDATION Manchester United Foundation is the official charity of the football club, aiming to ‘engage and inspire young people to build a better life for themselves and unite the communities in which they live.’ At the centre of their focus is communities within the city of Manchester and the people within them. Running more than 125 projects, partnering with 79 schools and reaching 70% of participants within Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) deprived areas, there is a vast focus on supporting young people and strengthening relationships between the club and those with limited access to opportunities. The support for a grassroots level by such a beloved institution connects the club and the community, showing that the badge belongs to everyone and extends beyond the team itself.

OF MANCHESTER #ACITYUNITED Originally founded as St Mark’s and renamed as Manchester City in 1894, the club was a community team within the east of the city. With early success in 1904, City found themselves out of the top division for many years. But this did not affect the support they received, with thousands turning up to Maine Road every week to support their team. A move to the Etihad Stadium in 2003, along with a change in ownership in 2008, led to a period of dominance for City, with new and exciting signings including Sergio Aguero and David Silva leading the club to their first league title in 44 years. Since then, the success has only multiplied, with manager Pep Guardiola leading the club to 18 trophies, including a historic treble in 2023, cementing a first Champions League trophy for the club.

CITY IN THE COMMUNITY

City in the Community (CITC) is a charity run by Manchester City, founded in 1986 with the aim to ‘support people across Greater Manchester by empowering healthier lives through football.’ Throughout the years, the programme has been making an impact beyond the football pitch, delivering a wide range of activities and initiatives in order to improve physical and mental wellbeing of fans and communities.

Running local football sessions, providing opportunities for a range of communities and visiting schools across the city, the charity places the fans at the heart of the club, with a sense of belonging and achievement away from the game.

The City United campaign is held in the hearts of all those within the city of Manchester, reflecting on a tragedy that rocked the footballing world in 1958. The Munich Air Disaster and its memory is ingrained into Manchester heritage and memory, an event that is remembered by football fans across the city every year, with a strong message sent out by both clubs, calling for unity and respect for such a tragic event. ‘City and United have always been rivals and always will be, but when it matters most, Blues and Reds have always stood by each other’s side.’

The Music Capital Manchester, otherwise known as 'Madchester' has gained a reputation for it's iconic music scene throughout the decades. Manchester earned it's name 'The Music Capital of The North' by producing many hugely successful bands, all of which took that Manchester twang and infused it into their music, which of course the people loved.

From The Smiths and Joy Division to Oasis and The Stone Roses, Manchester has birthed some truly world dominating bands that have changed Music forever. Its contribution to Music History has been nothing short of iconic, along with the introduction to Britpop and the Manchester Swagger, it transformed the 90s culture and that culture still stands today.

The Hacienda was a cornerstone for the 'Madchester' music scene. In its lifespan of 1982-97, the Hacienda was a nightclub owned by Factory Records and New Order. The Hacienda gave new and upcoming bands a platform and acted as a catalyst for their eventual fame. It has become known as a 'cathedral to pop culture' as it played an important part in many bands careers such as the Stone Roses, Oasis and 808 State.

Of The North The nightclub was a space for free flowing creativity and helped the 'Madchester' culture grow into what we know it today. However, The Hacienda did not act alone, The Night and Day Cafe, located in Manchester's Northern Quarter, is also pivotal in Manchester's Music scene. It has hosted over 26,000 bands and is still running today, many well known Mancunian bands have played there, including The Courteeners, Everything Everything and The Blossoms.

Manchester has remained an iconic place for where new and ever-changing music is constantly being produced. Its evolution has brought new musical ideas into the world and these have impacted the huge artists we see today.

Manchester's public takes pride in its musical background. The music scene here has shaped and molded Manchester, making it known for its production of Music worldwide. Mancunians today are proud to call this city home, knowing its a place of musical talent and innovation.

Violence In Manchester 22 May 2017

The 22nd May 2017 saw the detonation of a homemade bomb at an Ariana Grande concert in Greater Manchester designed to create maximum damage and life loss. This terrorist incident led to the death of 22 individuals and injuring 50+ more. The Manchester area was a prime location to attack as it was a high-impact and vulnerable location which would gain high media attention strategically shocking the public. The Chairman of the Public Inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing, Sir John Saunders notes the heroism of society and the considerable bravery shown from members of the public reflecting the resilience and solidarity in Manchester’s local community. Further reinforcing Manchester’s strong community after the attack, saw #RoomForManchester trending via social media allowing survivors’ refugee in the public’s homes emphasising the compassion the city holds.

2 October 2025

On the 2 October 2025, the holiest day in Jewish calendar, the Counter Terrorism police declared a terrorist incident, following the violent attack on the synagogue in Manchester. Authorities remark on the devastating attack for the Jewish community, suggesting the assault was ideologically motivated rather than an isolated act of violence. The timing of the act occurred during Yom Kippur which is traditionally celebrated with a day of reflection, prayer and fasting indicating the incident was a cold, calculated crisis. The Prime Minister addresses the nation following attack thanking the Greater Manchester Police, first responders and security specialists for preventing a greater tragedy, demonstrating the strength and perseverance of those responding to the incident.

Ultimately this demonstrates the resilience of Manchester has under crisis.

Even in the minutes after the attack, they opened their doors to strangers and drove them away from danger.

They gave the best possible immediate response to those who seek to divide us.

And it will be that spirit of Manchester that will prevail and hold us together.
