Meet the team: Hiya, my names Violet, proof reader, secretary, layout artist and editor in chief.

Whilst I am not from Manchester, it does hold a special place in my heart. My whole family grew up in Greater Manchester, so i do think of it as a second home. i have also made it my own by attending university in the City, therefore knowing what it means to be proud of a place as beautiful as this.

Hello everyone, I'm Eleanor Baldwin, editor in chief, art work editor and secretary... i am here to elaborate on many a Greater Manchester secrets and cultures that are embraced by fellow Mancunians. being from Wigan myself, i understand the pride in being called a 'Northerner'. exchanging dialects and legacies, being a northerner will never grow old on me.

If you could collaborate with any brand, who would it be, and why?

A current, personal favorite for the both of us is Bershka, we love it for both university comfies as well as the more professional items of clothing we wear for when we need to look that little bit more put together for presentations. This brand pops out to us as they sell high quality products for affordable prices.

what is a typical day for you both?

A typical day, after university we like to try new coffee places to sit and get some work done.

We find this productive as well as allowing us to explore the city and meet new people!

What are you currently obsessed with?

A current obsession for the both of us is a Bold Street Coffee, this is a staple for us on our way into our university lectures. As much as we love to try new places, this certain place is close to the university and the friendly staff make such a lovely atmosphere.

Have you come across any difficulties which meant you haven't been able to reach your highest abilities?

Yes, of course! It is not easy trying to juggle many university projects whilst having work and maintaining a social life, but its about having a good balance. For example, if we,know we are working fifteen hours one week and we have a project due, we need to divide our time so we are able to complete our project, even though this may mean sacrificing some social events. However, it should not always be your social life that tales the hit, as this is good for the soul.

what is something we do not know about you both?

A fun fact: we met on our first day at university and have been inseparable ever since.

what challenges have we faced so far?

During the production of the magazine, we faced some difficult challenges like finding time during our schedules to sit down together and manage our progress. This was manageable for us as we have similar time tables, it did take a lot of organization and planning.

why have you chosen to write about Manchester?

We both have our own attachment to this city as you will read in our articles...

What is your university degree in?

What does your time table consist of ?

Absolutely! If you are unsure what you want to do and its that time to We are both pursing a degree in start thinking about applying, go for Philosophy, Religion and Ethics at it!! The friendships made make it Manchester Metropolitan University. worth it in itself, but not just this, Our time table consists of 4, 1 hour the experiences you gain are so lectures and 4, 1 hour seminars, covering important. You get the chance to 4 modules per semester. this entails learn so much about yourself, how doing 21 hours outside our lectures on to handle your finances, how to our own. fill your time productively and overall, what it is like to be living alone/away from Quick fire questions: your family.

What do you both do for work?

How do you balance this with university life?

We both work within the hospitality industry, Eleanor works in a pub close to home, and Violet works in a club in Deansgate. It is difficult to manage these late nights with university but not impossible! We both really enjoy this line of work and have made lasting friendships which make those late nights worth it. We would definitely recommend looking for a part time job at university even if it is outside your comfort zone, as this allows you to meet and mingle with new people you may not have met (bonus points for hospitality).

Fallowfield, the heart of student living... We both spent a year of our university lives living in Fallowfield, as much as it is a place we would not live again, this was crucial to a part of our university experience. It is a place that brings people together, being students ourselves, we have experienced ourselves, first hand, what a place Fallowfield actually is. walking down the street you will bump into several people you know (whether you like it or not) as it is known as the student ‘hub’ of Manchester.

When first moving to Fallowfield, students are filled with immense optimism and excitement due to the towns lively, youthful, and charismatic atmosphere. With this being the initial thought process, it's likely to push away the feeling of home, comfort and stability when surrounded by impulsivity, freedom, and Pre-adolescent norms. Which raises the question of, can you feel pride for a place you only live temporarily?

There is definitely a sense of pride there, the joy of living with friends in an area with lots of others also living with

friends, there are a lot of areas that bring people together. For example, local businesses and areas like Platt fields park that join together groups of people (especially when the sun is shining) but also house parties that are taking place on your street, you hear that music, it is very likely you could knock on that door and be invited in.

However, this is not always a positive thing, civic pride is not always positive, for long-term residents this creates noise complaints and decreases the quality of the surrounding area, students are messy, this is not only bad for residents living there long-term, but also creates environmental issues that are a huge concern. For students, to have civic pride in Fallowfield requires one thing ; the need for nightlife. The drinking culture in Fallowfield is what keeps the students situated there. They would not live anywhere else; the students themselves activate the nightlife. Whilst the nightlife is ideal for a student lifestyle, Fallowfield lacks in other departments such as libraries, unique coffee shops, healthcare facilities, healthy food orientated café/shops. Takeaways, corner shops, pubs, and clubs' line the streets of Fallowfield to entice the typical student more however, this does not fulfil all university students wants or needs. Like us both, we enjoy a

productive lifestyle where hangovers do not exist, and takeaways do not satisfy our gut.

For long term residents, it is rather hard to situate the reasons as to why people stay however we will admit there is something different about the atmosphere of Fallowfield, something unusually unique you would not find elsewhere. Being just round the corner from the city, it is yet so different from a suburban town. Maybe that’s the reason as to why people stay, the undeniable individuality and uniqueness a place can occupy.

What does the quality of the houses landlords own say about how they feel about Fallowfield?

Clearly, they do not think highly of this area if we are using the quality to measure their pride, many issues rise in student housing that a lot of landlords do not bother fixing or prioritize.

This does not reflect well on how much pride they feel about Fallowfield, or does it?

So, going back to the main question, can you feel pride for a place you only live temporarily?

We certainly a place we feel proud of, a place we will never live again but can look back and be proud of the memories we have made and what we have accomplished. Yes, it was only temporary but that does not mean that we cannot feel a sense of belonging.

There is nothing better than being in such close proximity to an upcoming city. Manchester is a great place and you should take advantage of this, and heres how...

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT AS A STUDENT: FRESHERS: • One of the best things to do when you are planning to go to university is buying a freshers wristband. These will allow you to discover nightclubs with the best student deals. Even though they take you to main student events, they are most likely to carry on throughout the year, this allows you visit a lot of places which you may decide you really enjoy or maybe not want to visit again, and this is okay!

• A lot of students struggle with money in their first year at university, this means it can be difficult to explore certain restaurants. This doesn't make it impossible. The best way to discover restaurants is to one, ask for recommendations, and two, find your preferred cuisine and look online at places with the best reviews.

SECOND AND THIRD YEAR: • For second and third year, the best ways to explore the city is to get out there and try new places. Some may not be worth it, and other may be really good, so good you find yourself going back multiple times.

• another important thing is socialising, expanding your friendgroup is important for trying new places as the people you meet will know bars/restaurants/coffee shops that are worth the time. They might want to take you to theur favorite places.

MORE THAN JUST THE CITY: OTHER PLACES TO VISIT: • There are other places worth the visit when living around Manchester. A lot of students live in Fallowfield and this is a great location for exploring multipe places.

Not only is the city less than half an hour away but Didsbury is around the corner, a place filled with amazing pubs and restaurants.

BURY

B

Bury, a place that holds a special place in my heart, a place I consider a second home. My whole family are from Bury, this is what makes it special. I have never lived there, but I do feel a sense of pride when it comes to this town. This is a town rich with history, many people are born and raised here, there is a certain attachment people feel when they say this is where they are form or come across others who are also from there. In a place like this, civic pride is often something inherited, not discovered.

The famous Bury Market, is the center of local pride, a place where community is lived, not just described. It is known for its tradition and friendly atmosphere that everyone loves.

There is a lot more to explore in Manchester, its rich history is much more than the Market, for example, East-Lancashire railway and the Bury Transport Museum. Both celebrating its local engineering and innovation, as well as preserving industrial-era nostalgia, but not just this, it helps the town

These specific things reflect a time when Bury was defined by production and labor. Unlike other places in Manchester where pride is experienced, Bury is a place where the pride is inherited, as mentioned previously, it is passed down through generations. In this way, the heritage isn't something to look back on, but something that continues to teach us to this day what it means to belong.

Now, lets talk about something we all love, the food. Bury is known for... black pudding. now this is not a commonly loved food among most, but it is for those from Bury, not growing up in Bury myself, this is not something I partake in, but many who did, love it! This is something, that represents working class roots and industrial history. You are probably wondering, how can something as simple as

food show civic pride? But, in a place like Bury, its something that simple that unites the community as it is strongly linked with this iconic food, classic on an English breakfast.

Is civic pride deeper, richer in the outskirts, more than the city? Myself and Eleanor would argue it is. There is a stronger attachment for those living in an area where you grow up surrounded by families and a smaller, more proud community. In the city you come across more people who are not from Manchester themselves, where as in towns like Bury and Wigan they are born and raised there, so have more of an emotional attachment. In the Outskirts, you have more greenery, places with families to take their children to run around, go on dog walks ect., creating a friendly atmosphere you can go to chat to your neighbors, something you cannot do in the city.

OUR FAVORITE PLACES (NIGHTLIFE): Lost in Tokyo:

This is one of my (Violet) favorite cocktail bars, located in Northern Quarter, has a wide range of drink options and has a twenty four hour happy hour on their own cocktails. It is a fun energetic atmosphere with such friendly staff.

Perfect for drinks with friends during the day and has a place to dance when it gets busier later in the evening.

Crazy Pedro's:

This one is a personal favorite for the both of us. Not only does it have amazing frozen margaritas but it is also known for its delicious pizza, a slice if your peckish when you are out having fun. This is another bar with a great atmosphere and quirky interior design.

Albert Schloss:

This is a bar that is always busy, we have both had a few great nights here, it is a live music venue located in Deansgate with grand industrial decor. Attracting both locals and tourists, this is a chain so can find other venues but this is by far the best one we have been to.

POPULAR PLACES (NIGHTLIFE): Factory 251:

Factory is a nightclub that is very popular amongst students. A three floor venue with a range of music for each floor. Very popular for its student nights known as 'Tropiloco' where students get cheap entry and discounted drinks. We have both been once during our freshers and found it very welcoming and a great way to meet other first years.

Amber's: This is again, another venue popular for students. It is a house/DnB nightclub with two rooms, this place became popular for the policy they have that there are no cameras aloud inside, they cover up phone cameras before you enter, which created an appeal for many.

Blue's Kitchen:

This venue, on the other hand, is not specifically a student place although it does appeal. It is a jazz themed bar that has a wide range of drink or cocktail options with plenty of beer options on drought, as well as live music most nights that always seems to draw a crowd in.

City life for both me and Eleanor consists of a student life, constant city exploration due to our university being in the city itself. This allows us to make the most of a lot of fun quirky places that right at our feet, you can read more about some of our favorites in the next pages. Manchester is known for a lot of things, including its deep rooted history, football, nightlife and local pride in communities.

The academic side of a student allows us to visit libraries, historic buildings, museums and if you are like us, coffee houses we like to sit in to be productive and do work. We along side many others have grown to love this city and I have known many others who have continued to stay here after they have graduated, I hope to do the same.

As a student, it can sometimes be difficult balancing the fun things with the important things, me personally, I have found that they are both equally as important. The fun things allow us to explore places we love to go with friends and family like bars, pubs, restaurants and gaming places, Manchester is known for its night life and it is easy to take advantage of this as a student with many places

Many people wonder, what makes Manchester different to London? As someone who has lived in both, I can say that Manchester, by far, has a stronger sense community, strangers can bond over this city over the simplistic things. This may be due to Manchester being slightly smaller. London is a big City and many keep themselves to themselves.

One of the strongest bonds comes from football, there is

a lot of history when it comes to football. Even though there is rivalry between the two teams, it represents loyalty and a sense of belonging in local communities, it is more than just competition, for many Mancunians, supporting one of the two is an important for the cities identity.

I have found that working in the city has created a separate life from my life as a student.

It allows me to meet knew people and build a life away from home. Having a Job here allows me to have a routine and stay in the city instead of going home when I don't have university lectures or assignments, making this my new home, therefore, arguing that I do believe you can hold civic pride for a place you were not born. You make a home, and hold pride for it. Civic pride is earned, and can be earned through sense of belonging.

MANCHESTER CITY

WIGAN

W

A town that was built amongst coal mines and farming, Wigan shares a community unmatched with any other town. The culture of this place made of pies and beer, derived from the working-class Wiganers that, historically, were miners and worked in textile production. To many, Wigan is not a glamorous or superior town in terms of its material nature, but this is home.

It is the linguistics of the Wiganese that entice those most of all, with the “y’allreet cocker” or “Ee by gum” and the occasional Wigan kebab.

To those that do not know these linguistics, it is not supposed to be proper English but rather a way of communicating to other Wigan folk that you are too, a wiganer.

Even those that situate in central Manchester cannot equate what being a Wiganer really is or means. This is not

just a northern thing, it is something unique to the other side of the M62. Which leads me to this point, Wigan is the very definition of civic pride due to the upbringing and heritage of those that occupy the streets of Wigan.

It is the biggest borough in Greater Manchester for a reason.

It is obvious to me, through speaking to various folk that fall in Shevington “shevvy”, Orrell, Bryn, Ashton in Makerfield, Ince and Kitt Green just to name a few areas, that Civic pride belongs in the hearts of those that occupy our streets.

A majority of wiganers will never live anywhere else. It is in our blood, our history and or destiny to forever fill these streets with new generations of wiganers even when the frail pass on.

work, Music, textile production and farming that many turn a blind eye to.

There is almost a quarry in every corner of Wigan town, evoking its industrial history.

We had Wigan Casino situated in what is the Grande Arcade currently, which filled Wigan streets with the northern soul genre. People travelled far and wide to land in The Wigan Casino to experience its legendary flare. It was unlike any other club scene in Britain.

Ultimately, there is no doubt that Wiganers lack civic pride, it is embraced and encouraged in Wigan to be proud of where you come from.
