from the president|ceo Honoring the Heart of Our Business Community This month's Current magazine features the winners of our 46th Annual Small Business & Non-Profit of the Year Awards. This celebration is one of my favorite days of the year as we lift up companies and non-profit organizations that offer shining examples of solid business practices, creative ways to overcome challenges, and meaningful investments that benefit their teams, customers, clients, and our community. I hope you will take the time to read the profiles on these honorees on pages 16 and 17. Plans are underway for our 2027 awards program and we're looking forward to an even more amazing celebration as we grow its reach in celebrating the heart of our business community. We are very proud that the Manatee Chamber is the largest Chamber of Commerce in the Tampa Bay region, with more than 2,000 businesses and non-profit employers as members. Collectively, our members employ a workforce of more than 70,000. There is power in a network that covers every corner of the greater Manatee County region (and beyond). And while we are a large organization, we are laser focused on customer service that delivers a return on your membership investment. Did you know that our Chamber staff team has more than 125 years of tenure with our organization? We love connecting with you - whether that be via email, phone call, a visit to our offices, or at one of our meetings or events. Let us know how we can make your membership even more effective. Jacki Dezelski, IOM
Recently, we convened our annual Chamber Retreat & Leadership Conference. Many of the topics our members have identified as critical to our business community's success were on our agenda. From education to economic development, A.I. to Amendment 3, and healthcare to small business resources, Chamber leaders spent two days discussing top issues, brainstorming priorities, and strengthening our networks. Our Chamber's work is stronger thanks to the investment of our leaders at the Retreat - thank you!
Welcome to the Chamber Team!

public policy Study of Amendment 3 Raises Significant Concerns on Unintended Consequences Manatee Chamber Position Is a NO Vote on This Amendment On this year's general election ballot, Florida voters will have the opportunity to decide on Amendment 3 - a complex proposal of property-tax changes that would affect how homestead and nonhomestead properties are treated for property tax purposes. The Manatee Chamber created a task force to carefully study the amendment. Members include past Chairs of the Board, current Board members, committee chairs, and committee members. Over the past several months, we heard from our Sheriff, local fire departments/districts, mayors, representatives of County government, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. We believe Florida’s property tax system deserves thoughtful study and strategic reform, and that residents need meaningful affordability relief. However, after extensive review, we believe Amendment 3 is an overly broad constitutional proposal with too many unanswered questions and the potential for significant unintended consequences. Among our concerns is that Amendment 3 risks shifting tax burdens onto businesses and other non-homesteaded properties. The result could undermine essential public services and community investments, reduce local government revenues without limiting the costs of providing services, and limit local control among counties and cities with very diverse profiles and needs – all without providing clear or substantial relief for the cost-of-living challenges it is proposed to address. Consider these potential unintended consequences. A shopping center or office building does not receive a homestead exemption. Neither does an apartment complex or other rental property. If local governments must make up lost revenue to maintain public safety, roads, infrastructure, parks, and other services, businesses and other property owners could face increased costs. Those costs could, in turn, affect commercial rents, residential rents, consumer prices, or the ability of small businesses to absorb additional operating expenses. Local
governments will have two choices if this amendment passes; cut expenses and/or increase revenues. There is nothing in the proposed amendment limiting local governments on increased millage rates for non-homesteaded properties. We could also see new service fees that potentially could impact all Manatee County residents. These outcomes are not certain, but they illustrate why the Chamber believes the implications of Amendment 3 deserve greater study before such sweeping changes are enshrined in Florida’s Constitution. Florida’s counties and cities also have widely different tax bases, growth rates, service demands, and community needs. A constitutional change provides limited flexibility to address unintended consequences if they emerge. For these reasons, the Manatee Chamber opposes Amendment 3. Our concerns are shared by a growing list of organizations across the state, including many representing public safety, emergency services, and businesses. The Chamber supports property tax reform that is thoroughly researched, carefully crafted, transparent about who benefits and who pays, protective of critical services and communities’ quality of life priorities, and strategic in offering a long-term structure that benefits residents and businesses. We welcome the opportunity to work with the Florida legislature to comprehensively study property tax reform, including through Florida's Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, which convenes in 2027. This process provides an opportunity to consider property tax reform within the context of Florida’s broader tax system and our state’s long-term economic needs. The Manatee Chamber will remain highly engaged on this issue and represent the voice of our members – more than 2,000 local businesses and non-profit employers with a workforce of more than 70,000 in the greater Manatee County region.

MANATEE RIVER FAIR ASSOCIATION
UNITED WAY SUNCOAST
For nearly 90 years, the Manatee River Fair Association has been woven into the fabric of Manatee County. Its annual fair and year-round activities create opportunities for hundreds of local young people to develop skills in responsibility, leadership, financial management, public speaking, and communication. Over the past year, the organization hosted 37 community and non-profit events, while its signature annual event welcomed approximately 113,000 attendees. The organization also continues to expand opportunities for young people through media, marketing, performance, and other programs.
United Way Suncoast was recognized for its collaborative approach to addressing some of the area’s most significant challenges. The organization brings together businesses and non-profit organizations, volunteers, donors, and local leaders to create measurable impact. During the past year, it directly served 4,800 people in Manatee County, reached more than 1,000 local students through early learning and literacy initiatives, and helped more than 800 residents save nearly $200,000 in tax preparation costs while bringing more than $900,000 in refunds and tax credits back into the Manatee County.
Danny Alfonso, CEO & Fair Manager shared, "It take 13 committess to work on and present the fair every year, but our fair is just and what we do is raise kids. They're our future."
New CEO Kourtney Sanchez spoke how the award "...is a thank you to our community here in Manatee County because we really do believe that united is the way."

coffee club Where Memorable Gatherings Begin Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School welcomed Manatee Chamber members to its scenic 37-acre campus for September’s Coffee Club, giving attendees an opportunity to network while getting a firsthand look at the school’s new Pullen Center.
more than an asset for its students and families, it is a space the school hopes the broader community will embrace and utilize, creating new opportunities for partnerships and making the campus an even greater resource for Manatee County.
A Manatee Chamber member for more than five decades, Saint Stephen’s is a private, independent college preparatory school serving students from Pre-K3 through 12th grade. Small classes, outstanding faculty, rigorous academics, character development, global education, athletics, the arts, and an expanding marine science program are all part of the school’s approach to preparing students for success in college and beyond.
Those community connections are especially important to Saint Stephen’s. The school’s families include business owners, medical professionals, non-profit leaders, entrepreneurs, attorneys, and other professionals who share a commitment to educating and developing future leaders.
The morning’s highlight was introducing Chamber members to the new Pullen Center. Saint Stephen’s envisions the facility as
“Bringing members of the business and non-profit communities onto our campus gives us a chance to share the exciting things happening here and, hopefully, gets them thinking about ways we can partner to make our community even better,” said Peter Kraft, Head of School.
