On this month's Current cover we are featuring the honorees who received a 2026 Manatee Young Professionals (MYP) award last month. It inspires me to think about how the MYP program has been developing and supporting our region's young professionals for more than 25 years - and how important that is to the future of our community!
I was fortunate to be one among a fantastic group of young professionals who helped start MYP back in 1999. I was given that opportunity because the late Bob Bartz, president of the Manatee Chamber (and my supervisor), encouraged me to dig in and blaze a trail with my peers. Granted, it was part of my job to work on the program, but I can truly say that the more important (and motivating) aspect was that he visibly and vocally supported all of us who were involved in starting MYP to think big and deliver results. That support was an investment in each of us who were the early members of MYP - and it pretty much guaranteed that we felt great responsibility to and gratitude for all of the employers who encouraged us to do the important work of getting the program off of the ground.
As I listened to the long list of accomplishments of each of this year's award winners, I was so impressed by both the leadership acumen and the humility with which these MYP members seek to make a difference. They are making strides both professionally to help their companies/organizations succeed and personally in wanting to positively impact issues that matter to them. None of them could have this level of engagement without the support of their employers.
Compound those types of accomplishments over the 25+ years of the Manatee Young Professionals and I know that our region is better off today and better equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow. If you have never thought about personally encouraging your organization's young professionals to get involved - please do it! Imagine the "vote of confidence" your support would symbolize to an up and coming young leader. Show them that you believe in them and want their career and their community involvement to grow - we'll all reap the rewards.

Across Florida, FAFSA completion has become a key indicator of college and career readiness. Statewide, approximately 53% of high school seniors complete the FAFSA each year, reflecting meaningful progress while also underscoring continued opportunities for growth.

In Manatee County, College & Career Advisors, financial aid officers from SCF, MTC, and USF, UNIDOS Now, and leaders from the School District of Manatee County have partnered to support FAFSA completion. Initiatives such as FAFSA workshop events at each high school, one-on-one advising, and strategic partnerships with organizations including REACH Manatee, UNIDOS Now, and SCF have strengthened tracking efforts and contributed to improved completion rates across the county.

These collaborative efforts align with broader statewide initiatives like the Florida FAFSA Challenge, which encourages schools and districts to increase student participation and awareness of available financial aid opportunities.
During the 2025/26 school year, 45.1% of Manatee County seniors submitted a FAFSA application - representing a 6.% increase from the previous year. (Data source: Florida College Access Network FAFSA Dashboard 05.08.26). Manatee County students have earned an estimated $3,488,687 in Pell Grants! By completing the FAFSA, students gain a clearer understanding of the true cost of college, expand access to critical financial aid resources, and are better prepared to make informed decisions about their postsecondary education and career pathways.

Students from USF Sarasota Manatee gained valuable insight into the professional world during Job Shadow Day, hosted in partnership with The Manatee Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses.
Through this ongoing collaboration, students connect directly with local employers to explore career pathways and better understand how academic learning translates into real world applications. During their two-hour shadowing experience, students were able to observe professionals in action, engage in thoughtful conversations, and see the skills and teamwork that drive successful organizations throughout Manatee County.
For some students, the experience affirmed a career direction they had already chosen, and for others, it sparked curiosity about possibilities they had never considered. Overall, the students walked away with a deeper understanding of workplace expectations and a stronger connection to the local business community. Nine students from USF Sarasota Manatee were connected to member businesses who opened their doors to make this impactful experience possible: Bank of America, Bradenton Police Department, Grapevine Communications, IMG Academy, Manatee County Government, Manatee Memorial Hospital, NDC Construction Company, Parkwood Dental, and The Bishop Museum of Science & Nature. Their investment of time and mentorship reflects a shared commitment to workforce development and community leadership by our chamber members.
Following the job shadow experience, students returned to the Manatee Chamber of Commerce for a networking lunch and roundtable discussion. The conversation provided space to reflect, ask questions, and receive candid advice on networking, non linear career paths, learning from challenges, and staying true to personal values.
Experiences like Job Shadow Day demonstrate the power of partnership. By working together, The Manatee Chamber and USF Sarasota Manatee are helping students prepare for meaningful careers while strengthening the talent pipeline that supports our region’s economic vitality.
The impact of this day extends well beyond the shadowing experience, shaping futures, building connections, and reinforcing Manatee County as a place where students, businesses, and the community thrive together.

Manatee Young Professionals (MYP) helps emerging leaders build meaningful connections, strengthen leadership skills, and become more engaged in the community. For more than 25 years this program has provided young professionals (focused on those aged 21 - 40) with opportunities to develop personally and professionally, meet with established community leaders, and build lasting relationships that help shape both their careers and the future of Manatee County.
This year’s MYP Leadership Committee recently gathered at The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in front of Priscilla, the museum’s iconic mastodon skeleton casting, a fitting backdrop for leaders focused on helping young professionals build strong foundations for leadership, connection, and community impact.
As MYP continues to grow, this year’s focus centers on helping young professionals expand their networks, develop leadership skills, and deepen their involvement in both the Manatee Chamber and our region. Through networking events, mentorship, leadership experiences, and connections to Chamber committees and community leaders, MYP provides a platform for growth.
The "MYP Mentor Program", now entering its third year, helps newer members feel more confident in networking settings while encouraging deeper involvement in both MYP and the Chamber. By pairing emerging professionals with experienced peers, the program expands professional networks and helps participants maximize the value of their membership.
Additionally, through the "Champions of MYP" initiative and "Coffee & Conversation" events, MYP has strengthened connections between young professionals and Chamber leaders, sponsors, and committee representatives.
Under the leadership of this year’s MYP Chair, Kellie Spring, the program has expanded the focus on community service as an important part of the young professional experience. With a strong belief that leadership extends beyond the workplace, this year’s initiatives are creating more opportunities for members to learn about local non-profits and make a meaningful impact.
This year, members have already volunteered with Manatee County Habitat for Humanity and Pace Center for Girls, with an upcoming service opportunity planned with Hope 4 Communities. Additional projects are planned throughout the summer and fall to connect peers who share a passion for making a difference.

Manatee Chamber members recently had the opportunity to experience a unique local business during Business After Hours at Skyway Motorspace, where attendees toured a premium vehicle storage facility designed for luxury, collectible, and specialty vehicles.
More than simply vehicle storage, the company focuses on preserving and protecting clients’ investments through secure accommodation and on-site detailing services. Their goal is to provide peace of mind while ensuring vehicles remain maintained and presentation ready.
Guests enjoyed guided tours of the facility, offering a firsthand look at secure storage spaces, amenities, and the specialized care available to vehicle owners seeking additional garage space or enhanced protection for prized automobiles. The evening also
provided plenty of opportunities for networking and making new business connections in a relaxed setting.
