Manatee Chamber Has an Eye on the Future Thanks to the Support of Our Members
by Jacki Dezelski, IOM, President|CEO
In early February, our members came together to celebrate successful leadership and a long list of accomplishments at the Manatee Chamber’s Annual Dinner. All of the speakers on stage talked about the importance of partnerships, recognizing that we are stronger together in facing challenges and seizing opportunities for our region.
The past five months of hurricane response have brought that to the forefront like no other time in my memory. Short- and long-term recovery efforts have required constant communication, collaboration, trust, perseverance, and leadership that does not demand nor expect accolades for doing the right thing or going the extra mile. There are Chamber members who have voluntarily added a little bit extra to their annual dues to help us keep heavily impacted businesses connected through their Chamber membership. If you'd like to know more, please reach out to me. #ManateeStrong
Starting a new year at the Chamber always affords me time to reflect. One thing that stands out in my mind is the privilege it is to work with you and the thousands of other Manatee Chamber members who support our work. Our Chamber reached a milestone, this past year. We celebrated our 135th anniversary of the founding of what is now named the Manatee Chamber of Commerce. Our earliest name was the Bradenton Board of Trade, founded in 1889.
Your membership investment today continues the important work that has helped to grow our local economy and enhance our quality of life for 135 years. The Chamber has supported our area in being THE PLACE for businesses to thrive. While I don’t know all of the issues and challenges that leaders faced more than 100 years ago, I do know that the importance of the Manatee Chamber today was the same reason the Bradenton Board of Trade was founded more than a century ago. Working together to tackle tough issues matters – and our region is better for it. Working together to build a culture of leadership matters. Elevating the voice of business matters.
And, if not the Manatee Chamber, then who? Who would be the connector and convener, the catalyst and the collaborator? We truly pride ourselves on being “World Class Connectors” for you.
• Connecting members to valuable information and insights
• Connecting members to new customers and clients
• Connecting business priorities to policy development
• Connecting members to each other to strengthen partnerships and build a stronger network for us all THANK YOU for your membership investment
Chamber members have asked how they can support local businesses that are still struggling to recover. To help these businesses stay connected and utilize Chamber programs and services, we have launched our #ManateeStrong campaign as an opportunity to support engagement opportunities and membership assistance for impacted businesses and non-profits. Want more information? Give us a call at 941-748-3411. A full recovery for our region will take time - and it will require all of us to focus on ways to shop local, invest locally, and double down on our commitment to supporting small businesses, in particular.
The Glazer family, owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recognized three Tamapa Bay community members for their extraordinary efforts following Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The Bucs sought nominations of small business owners who went above and beyond to support the Tampa Bay region in the aftermath of the hurricanes. The three winning small business owners - including Darcie Duncan, of Duncan Real Estate - were hosted at the AdventHealth Training Center where honorees were awarded tickets to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
“Our small businesses are central to what makes this community unique, and we have been so inspired by the countless stories of resilience following this devastating hurricane season,” said Buccaneers Owner/Chairman Tampa Bay Buccaneers Foundation/Chairman Glazer Vision Foundation Darcie Glazer Kassewitz. “These three individuals truly went the extra mile to help others in a time of need, and my family is honored to award their efforts with these Super Bowl tickets."

The Chamber’s public policy work, with the critical involvement and support of our members, provides ongoing advocacy and assistance to our local governments and regional authorities. Chamber committees meet to assess issues affecting our community and develop policy positions that provide a voice for the business community and a platform for effective advocacy.
Each year, the Chamber's Legislative Committee pulls together priorities from all of the committee work at the Chamber to create our State and Federal legislative agenda. Once approved by the Chamber's Board of Directors, it is the foundation for our state and federal advocacy work.
In February, several members of our Legislative Committee will spend two days in Tallahassee presenting our priorities and meeting with our Florida House and Senate representatives. The 2025 Florida legislative session kicks off Tuesday, March 4 and our trip to the Capitol is a valuable opportunity for our elected officials to hear from the business community as they consider new legislation.
Manatee County high school seniors were given an opportunity to experience a “day in the life” of a 25-year-old with a job, possibly a family, and a monthly budget full of bills to pay. The Chamber's goal with the Big Bank Theory program is to build awareness of and strengthen students' financial literacy skills.
They quickly learned the value of having a budget and differentiating between needs and wants as they found housing, bought a car (or bus pass), and decided between name brand or store brand groceries, among other adult spending decisions they faced. In total, students navigated through 15 stations to complete the program.
As they considered their monthly budgets, students were particularly surprised at the cost of childcare and rent. They also had not thought about utilities being part of their living expenses. Some students were creative and roomed together to save on housing costs.
One volunteer shared this observation, "I was expecting the students to be more unrealistic at the beginning of the experience, but they came into the whole program taking it very seriously and making very thoughtful decisions."
Another volunteer said, "One student said 'Wow, this adulting is hard!'" And one volunteer shared this interaction: "A student texted a picture of their budget sheet to their parents and said 'How do you guys do it?'"
The Chamber has presented the Big Bank Theory program in our high schools since 2010 and this year we reached ten high schools with more than 3,500 enrolled 12th grade students. It would not be possible without the help of our many volunteers and generous sponsors - thank you!

150+ Chamber Volunteers Needed to Reach 4th Grade Classrooms Across Manatee County on Thursday, March 13
Project TEACH is designed to increase career awareness among 4th grade students. For many of the children, this is one of the first times they have had a business volunteer in their classroom and the first time they have been exposed to careers other than those of their parents.
More than 150 volunteers will be needed to reach every classroom. Volunteers help the students with an activity that encourages the students to explore a job/career for their future. The volunteer uses prompts to share their own career pathway and talk about what they do for their job.
An orientation and breakfast will be provided before volunteers head to their classrooms. If you have a specific school or teacher request, please let us know when registering as a volunteer. Volunteering is EASY and takes only a few hours of your time.
Schedule on March 13:
7:00 AM Orientation breakfast at Wakeland Support Center (optional for repeat volunteers)
8:45 AM Arrive at assigned school
9:00–10:00 AM Classroom activity
IMPORTANT: Sponsors are needed to support Project TEACH and the volunteer orientation breakfast. If you would like valuable exposure for your business, please contact Carey Miller at CareyM@ManateeChamber.com.

Honoring Members with 50+ Years of Investment in the Chamber Manatee River Fair Association, Inc.

In 2025, Brown and Sons Funeral Homes and Crematory will mark a significant milestone—celebrating 50 years of service to the community. Founded in 1975 by Chuck and Cheryl Brown, the funeral home has become a trusted resource for families during their most challenging moments. As a family-owned business, Brown and Sons has been committed to providing compassionate care with dignity and respect.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, Brown and Sons is giving back $50,000 to local charities that have supported the community over the years. This donation reflects the Brown family’s deep appreciation for the people and organizations that have helped shape the area. The funds will be distributed to a variety of local causes, including food banks, mental health services, shelters, and youth programs, ensuring that the community continues to thrive.
Chuck and Cheryl’s vision began 50 years ago with the goal of offering more than just funeral services—they wanted to provide comfort and support to families in need. Although Cheryl passed away in 2022, her legacy lives on through the continued dedication of Chuck and their children and grandchildren, who are now part of the business. Brown and Sons remains a true family operation, with three generations working together to uphold the values instilled by Chuck and Cheryl.
“Cheryl and I always believed in the power of community,” said Chuck Brown. “As we mark 50 years, we are proud to give back in a meaningful way.”
The $50,000 donation will be directed to local charities, with community input on which organizations should benefit from the funds. This initiative is just one part of a year-long celebration that will include events, memorial services, and fundraising activities. These efforts will not only honor the Brown family’s legacy but will also continue Cheryl’s commitment to making a positive impact.
Brown and Sons has been a fixture in the community for five decades, helping families navigate grief and loss with grace and professionalism. Looking ahead, the Brown family is committed to maintaining this legacy of service while ensuring that future generations are cared for and supported.
“We’ve always believed in caring for others,” Chuck said. “The next 50 years will be as focused on service and community as the first 50.”
For more information about the anniversary celebrations and how you can get involved, visit Brown and Sons Funeral Homes and Crematory’s website. The Brown family looks forward to celebrating this special milestone with the community that has been with them every step of the way.
Brown and Sons has two convenient locations and provides a variety of service offerings designed to meet the needs of each family including:

• Local Burials, Out-of-town Burials or Graveside Services
• Funeral Planning and Coordination
• Viewing and Visitation Cremations

The Manatee Chamber of Commerce kicked off the holiday season with their 2024 Holiday Coffee Club. The event was sponsored by Hancock Whitney Bank and held at Bayside Community Church in East Bradenton. What a great opportunity for networking with local businesses and professionals while getting into the holiday spirit.
“Hancock Whitney was proud to continue our tradition as presenting sponsor for the Holiday Coffee Club, and we all appreciated the warm hospitality of our hosts, Bayside Community Church,” said Chris Pennewill, Senior Vice President, Hancock Whitney Bank. “This event was a testament to the true spirit of the season as we came together for breaking of bread, fellowship, and gift giving to support the life-changing work done by HOPE Family Services. It is truly a privilege to work alongside the Manatee Chamber of Commerce and its fine member businesses to make our community a better place to live, work, and grow.”
The Manatee River Fair Association was delighted to host the Chamber’s January Coffee Club to kick off the 2025 Manatee County Fair. We appreciate everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to come out to see what the Fair looks like before all of the hustle and bustle begins. We hope everyone enjoyed the Coffee Club event and the Manatee County Fair this year. In addition, we would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support and the numerous volunteers who helped make our Fair such a huge success.
Planning for the 2026 Manatee County Fair has already begun, and we would like to invite all businesses to consider sponsorship to help support local agricultural programs.
In addition to the annual Fair, our fairgrounds are open year-round to host local, state, and national events. We invite all 501C3 Organizations to consider allowing us the opportunity to host your next event. Whether you would like the open space of our grounds area, our covered Mosaic Arena or our spacious (18,000 square feet) AirConditioned Veterans’ Hall, we believe we have the perfect setting to suit your needs along with plenty of parking.
Please feel free to call our office for information on becoming part of our Manatee County Fair family (volunteer/sponsor) or for venue rental availability, (941) 722-1639.
The Tidewell Foundation and Empath Health would like to express our sincere appreciation for your attendance at December’s Business After Hours event at the Stratum LIFE Center. It was wonderful to see such a great turnout of Chamber Members, all gathered to build connections and learn more about new elderly senior services that are offered to the community.
We are excited to offer the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) to Manatee and Sarasota counties in 2025. Providing comprehensive care to seniors, this new center allows frail elderly seniors to receive medical care, social services, and therapeutic support in a coordinated and community-based setting, helping them live well independently. Also, we are eager to collaborate with many of you to serve our community. Please contact Nafi Cunningham at 941-735-0727 if you would like additional information on the program.

Willis Smith Construction was delighted to begin the New Year with co-workers, colleagues, and friends at the January Business After Hours. We enjoyed delicious specialty bites catered by fellow Chamber member Pier 22. It was a beautiful evening to enjoy a drink and gather around the cozy fire!
Willis Smith’s Vice President and member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, Nate Carr, shared exciting information on the current and upcoming projects being built in Manatee County. Willis Smith continues to build landmarks within the community, and we look forward to future projects for generations to come.
There is truly no place like the Willis Smith DJ Swamp! We hope it felt just like “home” to everyone that attended this kick-off event. Thank you for ringing in 2025 with The Willis Smith Team! Cheers!
