SPOTLIGHT

Manatee Memorial Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education Program Celebrates Inaugural Graduation On June 14, 2014 the first graduating class of the Manatee Memorial Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education Program walked across the stage at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, fully qualified to practice their branch of medicine. The class of 27 included four Family Medicine Residents, three Internal Medicine Residents and 19 Transitional Interns. Many of the interns and residents who have completed their training at Manatee Memorial Hospital came to the program from osteopathic medical schools throughout the United States and locally from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Bradenton. They trained under the supervision and guidance of experienced board-certified teaching physicians, honing their diagnostic abilities and increasing their medical knowledge during both hospital-based and ambulatory rotations at the Turning Points’ One Stop Center and at physicians’ offices. In 2011, Manatee Memorial Hospital established Manatee County’s first residency program in the primary care fields of internal medicine and family practice with eight residents. The oneyear Transitional Internship Program was added in 2012. The hospital adheres to the program requirements of the American Osteopathic Association and osteopathic principles and practices are incorporated into the curriculum. The graduates received direction from Catherine Cooper, D.O., Director of Medical Education, who also served as the Program Director of Transitional Internship; former

Internal Medicine Program Director, John Peters D.O.; Residency Program Director for Internal Medicine Larry Wickless, D.O.; and Residency Program Director for Family Medicine Ronald Grubb, D.O. The physicians provided active leadership and direction for their respective residency programs. The program continues to strengthen as the hospital welcomes 25 new interns and residents to the campus. A total of 43 interns and residents will work with program directors and physicians at both hospital-based and ambulatory rotations as they complete their required rotation schedules on their path to graduation. For more information about Manatee Memorial’s Graduate Medical Education Program, please visit Manatee Memorial’s website at manateememorial.com and click on Careers, then Graduate Medical Education.

Port Manatee Your International Gateway Port Manatee is one of Florida’s largest and fastest growing deepwater seaports. Located at the entrance to Tampa Bay, Port Manatee is regarded as the closest U.S. deepwater seaport to the Panama Canal – providing shippers with speedy access to Pacific Rim markets. The port and its partners move approximately 8 million tons of containerized, breakbulk, bulk and project cargo each year including fresh produce, forestry products, petroleum products, citrus juice products, fertilizer, steel, aluminum, automobiles, cement, aggregate and more.

®

Port Manatee has more than one million square feet of public warehouse and office space, featuring 207,000 square feet of refrigerated space, including 30,000 square feet of freezer space. The port offers nearly one-and-one-half miles of berthing for ships. Another 800 feet of deepwater berthing was completed in 2013 with the expansion of Berth 12 resulting in a new berth, Berth 14. These assets, combined with convenient connectivity to the CSX mainline and efficient, uncongested access to the Interstate highway, prove Port Manatee has the foundation to become one of America’s next premier seaports. Surrounded by nearly 5,000 acres of largely undeveloped land, Port Manatee offers significant benefits to current and potential customers. As a leading economic engine, Port Manatee adds more than $2.3 billion annually in regional economic impact and supports more than 24,000 jobs. Port Manatee will be offering complimentary bus tours for the public throughout the Ship-Shape Showcase event on August 7th. In addition, Port Manatee’s open tram tour season begins in mid-October and runs through May, 2014. To learn more, please visit www.portmanatee.com.
