ROBOTICS REDEFINED Manatee County’s First and Only DV5

Manatee Memorial Hospital is the first and only hospital in Manatee County to offer the latest version of Intuitive’s® da Vinci® robotic surgical system, the da Vinci 5™ (DV5).

Surgical techniques have evolved dramatically from traditional open surgery to laparoscopic and robotic-assisted methods. Laparoscopic introduced small incisions and camera-guided instruments, helping reduce trauma and recovery time. Today, robotic surgery is helping to further enhance dexterity through 3D, high-definition visuals and complex instruments.

Our robotic-assisted surgical care features:

• Individualized treatment plans

• Greater precision

• Less pain and scarring

• Quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay

“The difference in recovery can be dramatic… it can give patients peace of mind and can lead to a smoother recovery.”

– Jose Erbella, MD, FACS, DipABLM, General Surgeon at Manatee Memorial Hospital.

Elevating the Positive and Staying the Course

I recently shared at a City of Bradenton Council meeting and at a Bradenton Kiwanis meeting that WalletHub ranked Bradenton and South Bradenton collectively in the top 3% of the "Best & Worst Small Cities to Start a Business (2026)". Being in the top 3% means we're at the "best" end of the rankings! The three overall measurements feeding the rankings are 1) Business Environment, 2) Access to Resources, and 3) Business Costs. Overall, the list includes 1,334 small cities/areas across the U.S.

This is the kind of news that should be music to all of our ears. While never resting on our laurels (the world moves too fast for that), we do want to pause long enough to celebrate the good stuff. Our area rated most highly in the "Business Environment" criteria, including:

• Average Growth in Number of Small Businesses,

• Startups per Capita,

• Average Revenue per Business,

• Average Growth of Business Revenues, and

• Industry Variety, among other data points

For the full report, please visit wallethub.com/edu/best-small-cities-to-start-a-business/20180.

As an organization that has small businesses as the core of our membership and a focus of our mission, the Manatee Chamber is thrilled to have an outside source recognize such a positive aspect of what makes us a destination for businesses. Supporting the attraction, retention, and growth of small business is a leadership priority for our Chamber.

The U.S. Small Business Administration encourages our country to celebrate "Small Business Week" in early May, and we are honored to bring that celebration down to the local level - and remember that for more than 135 years, businesses have invested in the Manatee Chamber. Today, we are the stewards of a long legacy of business influence as we carry out our proven program of work and have a eye on the horizon.

Part of leaning in on the future of our region includes lifting up local students by connecting them with knowledge and opportunity. We recently partnered with the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee Campus to place college students in local businesses for a job shadow opportunity. Targeted career interests of the students included banking/finance, healthcare, construction management, dentistry, law enforcement/criminal justice, sales, and non-profit management. Thank you to all of the Chamber members who hosted a student! If you would like to be added to the list for future opportunities, please reach out to Deborah Perry at DeborahP@ManateeChamber.com.

U.S. Chamber Visits with Manatee Chamber Leaders to Discuss Policies Impacting Small Businesses

Tom Sullivan, Senior Vice President of Small Business Policy with the U.S. Chamber, and Moore Hallmark, Vice President & Managing Director – Regional Government Affairs with the U.S. Chamber, spent time with Manatee Chamber Board members, Committee Chairs, Small Business Council members, Legislative Committee members, and Platinum investors. It was an important discussion about issues impacting local small businesses and how federal policies are affecting the business climate.

Topics ranged from taxes to tariffs, healthcare to hurricanes, workforce and housing. Local chambers of commerce are independent from any other chamber - whether that be at the local, state, or national level - and each sets its own priorities and policy positions. Often, we are able to work together on shared priorities to amplify the voice of business. The U.S. Chamber has been an important resource for us locally in analyzing specific legislation and its impact as well as tracking a myriad of issues at the federal level. Thank you to Tom and Moore for prioritizing a visit to Manatee County!

Follow Willis Smith for a behind-the-scenes look at how we build community landmarks.

150+ Chamber Members Inspire Future Careers

Now in its 33rd year, Project T.E.A.C.H. (Teach Everyone About Career Horizons) continues to spark curiosity and broaden career awareness among young learners. More than 150 volunteers visited local schools recently, interacting with over 3,400 students. One returning volunteer summed up the experience, “It is always a rewarding day to spend an hour with the fourth graders and their supportive teachers. It is something that I look forward to every year.”

While students can easily imagine themselves as doctors, veterinarians, athletes, video game designers, or YouTube influencers, the program introduces them to a wide variety of career opportunities available right here in our community. These include law enforcement, business ownership, hospitality, nonprofit management, and skilled trades.

The impact of Project TEACH is just as meaningful for the volunteers as it is for the students. Alex Elman-Foley of Lighthouse Vision Loss Center, who visited Bayshore Elementary, shared, “The experience was so rewarding to have so many students interested in my job. The students did not want it to end, and neither did I.”

For one hour, volunteers hosted an ice breaker activity about first impressions, soft skills, and professional communication. They shared their real-life career journeys, including the training, education, military service, college, or technical paths that shaped their success.

Teachers at Gullett Elementary echoed the enthusiasm, noting, “Our volunteers from LECOM Dental School were amazing! Please come back next year!”

This year’s program was made possible through the collective support of our sponsors, The Manatee Education Foundation, The School District of Manatee County, Manatee Community Foundation, Popi’s Place, and Tropicana Products.

If you are interested in volunteering for programs like Project T.E.A.C.H. or wish to get more involved in the Chamber’s education and workforce initiatives, please contact Deborah Perry, Education & Workforce Partnerships Director at DeborahP@ManateeChamber.com.

Business & Industry Tours: A Day of Discovery for Bayshore High School Students

Students at Bayshore High School recently had the opportunity to explore career pathways right here in Manatee County through a pilot initiative called Business & Industry Tours. This program was developed through a partnership between the Manatee Chamber of Commerce and the School District of Manatee County. This one day immersive experience brought learning far beyond the classroom with students visiting three local organizations, HCA Florida Blake Hospital, Tropicana, and Manatee Technical College.

At HCA Florida Blake Hospital, students were introduced to the fast-paced world of healthcare and emergency medicine. Hospital staff showcased a range of clinical and non-clinical careers, explaining the education and certifications needed to pursue roles from nursing to imaging technology, supply chain, and environmental services.

At Tropicana, they observed large-scale production operations, learned how food and beverage supply chains function, and saw firsthand how careers in distribution, logistics, quality assurance, and technology intersect in a global brand, one of the region’s most iconic manufacturing and distribution operations.

The day wrapped up at Manatee Technical College (MTC), where students had the chance to observe and learn about the various trade and technical programs available, either through dual enrollment or post secondary pathways. MTC staff highlighted the programs and the value of earning industry certifications that help students enter the workforce quickly and confidently. Programs such as HVAC/R, Advanced Manufacturing and Production, Baking & Pastry Arts, Firefighting, and Cybersecurity illustrated the wide range of indemand careers students can pursue.

Whether students choose higher education, specialized technical training, or immediate workforce entry, the Manatee Chamber continues to strengthen workforce development by helping students explore the abundance of career opportunities within their own community, empowering students to make informed decisions about their futures.

The enthusiasm from the Bayshore High School students was matched by the generosity of Chamber members who opened their doors to this initiative.

A Model for Future Expansion

The Manatee Chamber of Commerce and the School District of Manatee County may look to expand Business & Industry Tours to additional high schools into the 2026–27 school year. By continuing to provide these meaningful, real world learning experiences, Manatee County is investing in its greatest asset …its growing talent pipeline!

If your organization would like to learn more about the impact of business & industry tours, and how to get involved contact Deborah Perry, Education & Workforce Partnerships Director at DeborahP@ManateeChamber.com.

Volunteers: The Heart of Big Bank’s Success

The success of the Chamber's Big Bank Theory program is driven by the dedication and passion of its volunteers. This year, hundreds of volunteers invested 3,266 hours of time to provide students with encouragement, guidance, and practical financial insight to managing a monthly budget. According to the Independent Sector’s Value of Volunteer Time, this service represents an impressive $107,778 in contributed value, highlighting how volunteers are essential to our program’s reach, impact, and overall effectiveness.

Thank you to all the volunteers whose time, energy, and expertise helped the Big Bank Theory come to life in eleven Manatee County High Schools. Your efforts created a lasting impact to ensure our high school seniors are better prepared for real world financial decisions.

Featuring: Sheriff Rick Wells, City of Bradenton Acting Chief of Police Brian Thiers, and City of Palmetto Chief of Police Scott Tyler

Public safety is more than a community concern - it’s a fundamental business issue. When people feel safe where they live, work, and shop, businesses are more likely to thrive.

Chamber Annual Dinner Honors the Legacy of Business Leadership

The 63rd Annual Dinner was a memorable evening dedicated to celebrating the outstanding business leaders of the greater Manatee County region. The event provided a meaningful opportunity to connect, share achievements, and recognize the individuals and organizations whose continued investment strengthens our community.

Outgoing Chair of the Board Stu Henderson of Fawley Bryant Architecture was honored for his exceptional leadership and service to the Manatee Chamber over the past year. We also proudly welcomed Justin Phillips of Minuteman Press of Bradenton as our incoming Chair of the Board. Justin brings energy, vision, and a strong commitment to our business community as he steps into this leadership role.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 9th Annual Robert P. Bartz Award to Vernon DeSear, with an overview of Vernon's leadership and impact presented by Kevin DiLallo. This prestigious award recognizes a community leader whose impact extends far beyond their own business or organization, leaving a lasting mark on Manatee County through leadership, service, and philanthropy.

Throughout the evening, we also celebrated the Chamber’s many accomplishments over the past year and shared a forward-looking vision for how we will continue to serve our members. Key focus areas include advocacy, small business support, workforce development, young professionals programming, and more.

We extend our sincere thanks to our members, the collective heart of the Manatee Chamber, for their continued support of our team, Board, committees, and volunteers. Together, we are building a stronger community where we live, work, and do business.

Vernon DeSear exemplifies the legacy of leadership established by Bob Bartz through a lifetime of selfless service, integrity, and unwavering commitment to Manatee County. A lifelong resident, Vernon has devoted his professional and civic life to strengthening the community he calls home. His leadership reflects the very qualities that defined Bob, including a vision grounded in service, collaboration rooted in respect, and a belief that strong communities are built by investing in people.

For more than twenty-five years at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Vernon served in senior leadership roles, including Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. In these roles, he expanded access to essential medical services, strengthened community awareness, and built lasting partnerships among physicians, patients, and civic leaders. Today, as Chief Executive Officer of the Manatee Memorial Foundation, he continues that mission through philanthropy, guiding investments that have provided more than $1 million in scholarships for aspiring healthcare professionals and vital support for non-profits serving patients and families throughout the county.

Vernon’s leadership extends beyond healthcare to include education, culture, tourism, and civic development. Over the course of his career, he has served on more than forty boards, demonstrating extraordinary civic engagement. His service includes leadership roles with the State College of Florida Foundation, where he has championed workforce development and access to higher education, and the Hernando de Soto Historical Society, where he has supported cultural preservation and community heritage.

One of Vernon’s most enduring contributions is his role in the revitalization of downtown Bradenton. As the founding board chair of Realize Bradenton and later as Chairman Emeritus and Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, he helped guide the implementation of the Bradenton Cultural Master Plan. His leadership contributed significantly to the success and expansion of the Bradenton Riverwalk and ensured that tourism investments strengthened local businesses while enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Through both his professional achievements and his deep civic involvement, Vernon DeSear continues to embody the spirit of Bob Bartz, making him a most deserving recipient of the Robert P. Bartz for Outstanding Leadership Award.

small business week

Small Business Week Shines a Light on the Foundation of Our Local Economy

Walk down any street in Manatee County, and you will find the heartbeat of our community in the form of small businesses. They are the familiar faces who know your name and the entrepreneurs who took a chance to build something meaningful right here at home.

From May 3 through May 9, Small Business Week offers an opportunity to recognize and celebrate these businesses and the role they play in shaping our local economy and quality of life.

Led locally by the Manatee Chamber of Commerce, this weeklong celebration brings together local businesses, community leaders, and residents in a shared effort to support and uplift the small business community.

This year’s celebration includes a variety of ways for the community to get involved and show their support:

• Support Local Campaign

A collection of special offers from Chamber member businesses encourages residents to discover new places, revisit favorites, and make the choice to shop close to home. The Chamber’s online business directory makes it easy to explore local options and connect directly with businesses throughout the community.

• Online Business Directory

Looking for a place to shop, dine, or do business? The Chamber’s online directory at business. manateechamber.com/directory serves as a go-to resource for finding trusted local businesses and you can Save Local by going to business.manateechamber.com/hotdeals. Choosing local has never been easier.

• Small Business and Non-Profit of the Year Awards

The call for nominations launches this week to recognize organizations that go above and beyond in service, innovation, and community impact. These awards highlight businesses that are not only succeeding but also giving back and helping others succeed.

• Educational Seminar

Join us on May 5 for our Employee Benefits That Don’t Break the Budget seminar, offering practical insights for business owners looking to add valuable benefits to their teams while managing costs and positively impacting employee retention.

• Surprise Patrol

The Chamber team will visit local businesses throughout the week, bringing energy, recognition, and a few fun surprises to celebrate the people behind the businesses.

• Free Training Opportunities

We are putting together a full calendar of free training opportunities through our partners with SCORE, SBDC, and the SBA. You can find more information at ManateeChamber.com/SBWTrainings.

• Join the Celebration Online

Follow @ManateeChamber on social media, tag your favorite local small businesses, and share photos of how you are supporting them throughout the week. It is a great way to spotlight the businesses you love and inspire others to shop local.

The celebration concludes with a community-wide call to action. Shop Local. It is a simple choice that has a lasting impact. Every dollar spent at a local business helps strengthen the local economy, supports jobs, and keeps our community vibrant.

Small Business Week isn't about one week. It's about recognizing the people and businesses that invest in our community every day. When we support them, we all benefit.

Local flavor on display. A Chamber member business engages the community at a recent expo.
