First drop is an attempt to convey the incidences which took place when we the students went for rural study in a village called Kothaballuguda near Araku District. In addition we would be narrating the interesting facts and information which we collected during our survey in the village in a comical, conversational story format with some of the characters from the village.

First drop Krlk… krlk… drop by drop rain water falls on land… a nice smell from soil… Abhijit… an 18 year old youngster studying in vizag…. Closing his eyes, goes to the open balcony… trying to make each drop to touch his body by making his hand wide as if he is hugging the rain.

Suddenly a shout from back…

Praveen : Abhi… Abhi… Abhi…where are you…?

Abhi : cheppu praveen… I am out in balcony…

Praveen : nee romance thagalayya… come dude I bought hot mirapakkay bajjis for us… go change your clothes and come… let’s have them…

Abhi : missing my home a lot praveen…if I were in my home, my mom used to cook bongulo chicken… Araku’s famous food.

Praveen : your parents stay in araku, is it???

Abhi : yeah… nearby village KOTHABALLUGUDA… my hometown

AND… THE STORY BEGINS… ABHI : So praveen… what are ugadhi holiday plans..?!

Praveen : nothing much man… it’s been an year since I went to Araku… planning to have a trip to Araku valley…. I have seen images in google… such a beautiful greenery all over…and I also heard that it is called as Poor Man’s Ooty.

Abhi : yeah… then try coming to my home as well… if you can...it’ll be fun during ugadhi, we have this interesting festival itukula pandaga where people 8

go on the roads to beg. One of my uncle owns a hotel there… shall I book a room for you in araku valley…?!

Praveen : Oh, That’s so nice of you.I will ask prakash, manav and priya as well… if they can join us in this trip of ours and I’ll let you know…

Abhijit left the room and goes out for some work… Meanwhile Praveen gets call from priya …

Priya : hello praveen… where are you?? I am waiting at college lobby to submit my design studio sheets to Dhanalakshmi ma’am.

Praveen : hi priya… I didn’t come to college today… its raining out… feeling dizzy too…

Priya : lazy goose,take care, Shall call you later.

Praveen : priya... priya…priya…

Priya : chepppuuu…

Praveen : Shall we plan a trip to araku valley during the Ugadhi holidays… it is 92km from vizag bus stop to araku valley… we can go in bus, it costs less than 130 rupees… ask manav and prakash as well.

Priya : ok..will check with my parents and also our friends.

Praveen : Ok..bye Priya goes to studio and sees Manav sitting alone in the first bench and sketching something randomly.

Priya : hey manav ! em chestunnav?!

Manav : nothing priya… yesterday I met Ar.Shekhar. He inspired me a lot… telling us every architecture has a story.. working on those storylines…

Priya : That sounds good…wanted to tell you something… we guys are planning for a trip to Araku these holidays… it would be great if you could join us in this trip…

Manav : ok Priya, I will check with my parents and I’ll let you know…

Hey… That reminds me of our abhijit who lives near Araku … his hometown kothballuguda is just 8.2km away from Araku valley… if we inform him he’ll surely invite us to his place (with a weird smile) … so Kothaballuguda

that our expenses will be reduced… hahahahaaaa….

Priya : hahaha…. Yeah…but he lives in a tribal community.. that might be the reason he didn’t invite us…

Hearing their conversation… one of the faculty member Sundhar enters the class with angry face…

Sundhar : how could you judge them or calling them as tribal community?? why don’t you call them as indigeneous community.

Priya : sorry ma’am… we didn’t mean to degrade them by calling them as tribal people ma’am Sundhar : It’s ok da… you guys are at learning stage… nothing wrong in it…

Manav : okay ma’am

Tripura sundari leaves the studio … prakash returns from the other section after having a conversation with a friend in the other section...

Manav : priya… are you calling your best friend Shreya from chennai Priya : ha! I called her… the estimation cost was 15500 rupees… lets hope that she’ll join us…

Prakash : Araku… hey did you hear about the recent news about the MLA of araku constituency was shot dead by the Maoists because of his illegal activities and not providing proper facilities for the people of araku constituency.

( prakash continues to talk about politics…..)

Manav : common prakash… future politician (with a crazy smile…)

Prakash : hahaaha…. Areyyaar…

The next day during the tea break…

Abhijit : hey guys…. So far as per our plan we are leaving in next 3 weeks…

I asked my cousin brother to book rooms in his hotel for us to stay… we need not give a single penny Priya : hey are you sure about this “no cost” accomodation ( with an awkward 10

face) Abhijit : It’s totally fine Priya… Dilip anna is so close to me … he is a very nice person… he never minds. Sri saisuvarna for girls and vellangine comforts for boys… okay right…?!

Priya : But just think about it once again….

Abhijit : Yeah I spoke to them and then only confirmed.. i actually thought of welcoming you people to my home in kothaballuguda…but you guys might feel uncomfortable living in a village that too in a mud house… you guys are habituated living in cities Manav : mud house…??

Abhijit : ha….!! You guys can visit our village… my parents will feel happy seeing you guys… it’s just me, my sister and my parents living in our house.

Manav : so this one’s going to be fun…

After 3 weeks…

Priya : we leave for Araku…

As we travel through the hills….it made us feel lucky among millions who are ever busy in worldly affairs…

With direct touch of nature we felt a divine peace and calmness in mind.

Weather was so nice, all of us felt excited on reaching the destination.

We checked into our respective hotels (Boys and girls staying in different places).

After freshening up, Abhijit took us for a site seeing, starting with Tribal Museum.

This place was awesome with so many antique things used by the people of Araku. This museum showcased traditional art, handicrafts , ornaments and textiles which are used by indegenious tribes.

Unlike others , this museum is not historical , but instead showcases the orthodox lifestyle , along with the social, economical and cultural norms and customs of the native tribes of the region.

The museum itself is built with mud and various metals that gives it authentic tribal feel and lend more credence to the artifacts that reside within.

Also, we could see that the museum houses shops with number of artists from local tribes, setting up stalls to try and entice customers with their own skill full creations of tribal art.

Finally we enjoyed with the boating experience, wherein we were allowed to do rafting by ourselves, It was so amusing and had real fun boating. We will cherish this experience forever.

We got too tired going around the museum and boating , that we wanted to have some coffee.

To our surprise , we could see a coffee museum adjacent to the tribal museum.

As we entered the Coffee museum ,we got carried away by the Native Aroma of the coffee inside the place. We ordered cold coffee with icecream (Yes, We were also surprised to know that all this was available there). While we waited for the coffee to arrive, we went around the coffee museum to unearth some facts about the place.

The concept was developed and created by a migrant to Araku Valley, Prakash Rao. In 1930, he had setup a general catering service primarily for tourists. Realizing the uniqueness of coffee produced in Araku Valley , one of the few place in India that grows Arabica coffee as opposed to the more commonly grown Robusta coffee, he worked on Highlighting Araku Coffee.

In 1954, he had setup this Coffee Museum, Which offers educational entertainment in the form of Dioramas detailing the history of Coffee and a Dhimsa Dance at 6 in the evening everyday.

We tasted the best of the coffee and left the place.

Abhijit now took to us to a place where we could taste Bongulo Chicken, a special delicacy of Araku Valley. This is called as Bamboo chicken in towns and cities. It tasted real good and our Dinner was done.

We were back at room to relax. Had a good sleep in the arms of Mother Nature. Abhijit asked us to get ready by 6 in the morning to take us to his Native Village , Kothaballuguda which was 8.3 kms away from our place. We had set the alarm at 5 in the morning and got up promptly to get ready.

We had to take bath in chill water in freezing cold weather, still we enjoyed this experience. We were all ready by sharp 6.

We had to take an Auto to reach his village.

It was a 15 minutes drive to his village, all through the way we could see greenery in the valley which was going up and down..

After reaching the village, we started walking through the streets to reach Abhijit’s place. We had lots of rural sight-seeing like Women fetching water from Hand pumps on streets, children playing around happily on the streets and men sitting and chatting under a tree early in the morning.

The house had a very spacious thinnai... I was tired walking down the village to his place.The house is split into 5 main divisions or spaces.. the multipurpose hall, storage space, attic space, a kitchen and thinnai. I felt a huge temperature difference from outside to inside of the dwelling. It’s as cool as an air conditioned space. It was extremely comfortable that all I wanted to do was to lie there and sleep.

Abhijit’s mom welcomes us with a warm smile. It was interesting to notice her dressing style , in the way she was wearing the saree in Tribal style , with three rings in her nose.

As we entered the house, we noticed abhijit’s dad and sister sitting on the floor of the house.

During their conversation…

Dad : All of you kids must study well and get settled properly.

I had to to work hard in the agricultural field and since our income was not enough, I had to send my wife to work in other’s fields for daily wages for our livelihood. So you people study properly so that you can become economically stable and can support your families…

Also, to get our daughter married we need enough money which we do not have right now.

Abhijit’s sister : Now I am doing dietician course for the basic teacher job in and around Araku valley.

It was hot inside the house so abhijit’s dad asked us to go outside and sit in the thinnai (Sit out in the front side of the house) As we were talking… we were feeling sultry, even though the weather in the region was cold.

While we were talking, abhijit’s sister mangamma sneaks out of the house towards the bus stop. (where her boyfriend Akhil was waiting for her…)

Mangamma : Hi , How are you ? Long time since we met. I was wondering if you still remembered me?

Akhil : Hey common , what is this? How can I even forget you .It was just that I was busy with my work , that I could not come to meet you.

Mangamma : Yeah I knew that , but still I was worried about your whereabouts.

Akhil : Did you talk to your parents about our relationship? Will they accept?

Mangamma : I do not care about my father because he had married another women and also has an affair with one another women due to which my 14

mother is very upset.

Seeing my father , I feel very angry on men who just randomly go about having affairs and because of this there is a huge margin in the sex ratio… Hope you will not do the same as my father did.

Akhil : Do not worry, I will soon finish my under graduation in vizag and will find a good secured job and ask your parents for marriage.

As she leaves to go back to her house… Akhil gets on his bike and on his way, he was hit by a royal enfield bike, Luckily no one is injured.

It was Sriram and Raju who were riding the bike.

In their conversation, Akhil finds they are travelers.

Akhil offers them shelter in kothaballuguda.

Sriram noticed school ,where kids were playing.

Sriram gets excited and plays keyboard and Raju goes inside the village for sketching.

The children then take him to the community space As he’s playing keyboard entertaining the children, they hear loud noise from the house nearby. Everyone rush towards a house, one of the kids anand goes inside to check At thayaramma place, her children are seen fighting over tv channel the elder one, Vineeth, wants to see wwe while the other kid, manoj, wants to see a comedy show.

Thayaramma : If government hadn’t provided free electricity and free television cable the house would have been peaceful.

Mano : its always vineeth who decides what to watch Vineeth : I have come for holidays atleast let me see the show for a while

The fight gets serious and vinoth pushes manoj away which causes fracture in his leg Their mother Thayaramma panics and calls the neighbor for help Kothaballuguda

Thayaramma : akkaaaa... my son has fallen down thé slope...I think he has hurt his leg badly... he should be rushed to hospital as soon as possible... his father is out of town.

Apalamma : calm down!! Calm down!! Hospital is 5km away from our village and at this odd time we won’t get any auto... we’ll take him to grandma for naatu vaidhyam.

As he’s getting treated at grandma’s place… there comes another lady who cries that her daughter has chickenpox.

Jaramoni : amma… Nandhini has got chicken pox... I don’t know what to do now Grandma : just make her sit in one corner of a room I’ll bring neem leaves so that we can make her lie over them and apply turmeric all over thé affected places...it’s late now, we’ll go to the hospital tomorrow morning and get medicines for her.

The Jaramoni goes and does what the grandma says…

Neighbour kid, Naman, comes to play with Nandhini… when Jaramoni says that she’ll not be able to play for few days ,with a sad face he goes back to his house.

An old women Kondamma comes and asks for his grandma Kondamma : Is your grandma at home???

Grandson : yeah she has just now slept because she is unwell...

Kondamma : even my health is not doing good... I went to the hospital at araku valley and they said I have to get my heart operated... we don’t even have enough money to approach them... I am destined to go through this pain and I am relying completely on God.

Naman’s mother comes from inside with dull face. Kondamma asks why are you dull?

Naman’s mom : amma… I am pregnant...

Kondamma : wow that’s a great news...

Naman’s mom : no amma its not a thing to celebrate about... I am really worried about giving proper timely nutrition for my child... we don’t get hygienic food here in our village and also our economic status is low to afford Kondamma : Oh God..!! why worry for that... government is providing pregnant ladies with eggs, milk and cereals for proper nutrition... try to avoid having rice all day along because pregnant ladies are not adviced to have too much carbohydrates.

Another neighbour lady Tapalamma comes and asks for cowdung to apply the layer of plastering for the walls.

Tapalamma : Akka... do you have Some cow dung in your cow shed...I need Some for mud plastering in and around our house...

Naman’s mom : I think instead of using mud plastering because the irregularity of the mud plastering leads to water stagnation in the roads which causes malaria. Even though it’s bit costly I think we should opt for cement plastering.

In the evening ladies gather for fetching water…

Ramulamma : Monisha is now 5years old and I want to get her admitted into the best school and the school near our village is not maintained properly... even Radhika needs to get admitted into the best college for further studies... I want them both to get well educated ... we don’t even have educated people in our village who can guide us properly...

Gangamma : there are almost 46.8% uneducated people... only few finished their schooling 20% and only 14.2% of people are graduated till now... this has lead to the decline in literacy rate and thus the village has remained undeveloped.

Ramulamma gets back home after fetching water…

Radhika : Mom please don’t ask me to wear those three rings like the ladies in our village do. My college friends will tease me.

Ramulamma : No Radhika you’ll not be wearing those nose rings. That is Orissa people’s tradition we don’t follow them.

Monisha : why is it that there are two religion in our village??

Ravikrishna : The borders are created by the people… they are imaginary.

As Araku lies at the border which separates Orissa and Andhra border, there will be people of both the religion, telugu as well as Orissa.

Monisha : Radhikaakka, we are saved. (with a relief in her smile)

Ravikrishna leaves to go to the rachabanda (common gathering space) for chatting Ravikrishna : hey Akhil heard that your children have been recruited for good jobs in vizag... are you gonna move to vizag with them....

Raju : abhijit and praveen have got decent jobs... we are planning to shift there permanently...

Ravikrishna : nowadays most of the youngsters are getting settled in cities along with their children, hence joint families are getting separated. there was a time when most of the people lived in joint families() and nuclear families() were hard to find because they loved being together.

Priya : It’s already 6 in the evening… We are waiting for the auto to come pick us and drop us at hotel.

We saw an old man talking about Pathaballuguda… we were so much curious to know about the whole history.

Manav : Thatha, can you please tell us in detail about the village??

Grandpa : Yeah sure, my child. There used to be less number of settlements on the other side of the hill and the village name was Pathaballuguda. The occupation of the people over there was hunting. Over the period of time they started moving to this side of the hill so that they had easy access to the road to Araku.

Praveen : wow this place and it’s history…everything about kothballuguda is fascinating.

Abhijit : this is just the trailer… main picture tho abhi baaki hain boss…

After having a fun time at the village, we all reached our respective rooms. We were so tired that, we slept off early thinking of going to Abhi’s village once again in the morning.

Morning, the place was so pleasant that we couldn’t get out of 18

our beds. As we got ready to go to kothaballuguda, we saw many students at our hotel. When we had a conversation with them, we found that they were from Chennai and they had come to araku for a village documentation.

We got even more excited when we got to know that even they were architecture students. We suggested kothaballuguda for their study. They were 30 people with their staff Ar.Aishwarya.

We joined them to go to kothaballuguda. We were also excited to know more new stuff about the village.

Manav : yayayayyy!!! we got a great chance to learn new things!!!

Praveen : don’t jump in excitement manav!

Manav : I am thinking of staying here and help them with their study… we’ll be helpful for them in communication.

Prakash : that’s a great idea..!!

Aishwarya Maam : you guys can join us and help us with the study related works.

Manav : yayayayyy!! I am so excited Rishitha : As soon as we reached the village, we took some time to go around the entire village.

Then, the village was divided into six zones. Each of us were assigned a particular zone and we began our study.

On the first day we mapped the entire village. We counted the number of dwellings in the village and made note of the various materials that were used in construction.

Some of the students were involved in conducting surveys.

Initially they decided to conduct the surveys individually, however they were mistaken to be Government officials who had come to abduct their land. Hence, they had to face a lot of insults and humiliation and thus decided to go together.

That evening we went back to our rooms and started working together. We had to consolidate all the information that we had collected and present it to our staff. We worked together in groups Kothaballuguda

and finally presented our sheets at night. After the review all of us went to bed with a sigh of relief that we had completed our work but little did we know that our work was yet to begin…

The next day we got up early in the morning and went back to the village.

That day, our main task was to identify unique houses and buildings in the village and document them. A total of twelve houses were selected for documentation.

A group of 3 to 4 students entered each of the houses, and took measurements of all the walls, openings and ridge height. They then made a note of all the furniture present inside the house along with their measurements. Pictures of the elevation, various joinery details and internal spaces were taken.

After all the necessary details were collected, the students sat in the thinnai of the house and began to draft the plan, section and elevation of that particular dwelling. The residents of the house were very amicable and offered jackfruits and mangoes to the students.

Another set of students set out to measure the contour levels of the village. As kothaballuguda is located in Araku Valley, a hill station, it was essential to measure the contour levels of the land using the ‘ my elevation app’ to understand the nature of the slope.

On the third day, we began to focus on the construction details of the village. We made onsite sketches of the village and synthesized the data collected on the street sections and street elevations of the village.

The survey students, Vishwa, Ramya,tilak and Shravan had completed their work within the village and went to collect information about the various institutional, religious and commercial buildings around the village like schools, churches, health centres, etc. on their way, the met Mrs Jayashree who had done a documentation on the villages in Araku i.e. nearly 52 villages.

She was really concerned about the education of the children as the teachers nowadays in government schools are not really so 20

attentive about the children. They are only working for the purpose of getting monthly salary.

She was also interested to interact with our staff and students about rural study.

On the fourth day of our rural study, we strolled along the streets kothaballuguda to make a detailed study on the different types of doors, thinnais and roofing and flooring materials used.

There was a group of students who use ANIMOMETER and INFRARED THERMOMETER[ instrument names] to collect the climatic data of the village. They analysed the internal and external temperatures of various dwellings during different times of the day.

Certain students entered each household and made a thorough study of the internal spaces. They clicked pictures and drafted the plans of each dwelling in order to categorize them based on the owner’s occupation, needs and necessities,etc. that evening the students sat together and synthesized all the data that they had collected. They prepared sheets that displayed the various data that they had collected.

That evening, Mrs Jayashree visited the village and spoke to us about the various social and religious practices of the tribal people. It was a very educative and informative session.She also shared a copy of her book which was gonna be released the next day. The book “GIRIJANA VAIBHAVAM” was about her documentation on indigenous people in Araku, their history, culture ,language,etc.

The next day, a group of six students, Muthu,Aparna, Yuva ,Shalini,Geetha and Shivikavisited the village at around 6 :00 in the morning to document the various daily morning activities of the villagers. A video was taken by bhavesh which captured the various activities that they performed.

In the afternoon, we noted down the different types of vegetation that grew in the village, the number of hand pipes, electric poles, drainage pits, etc along the streets.

Thus we made a complete study on the services and infrastructure Kothaballuguda

On the 6th and last day of our stay at the village, we went around the entire village to make sure that we had collected all necessary data and had not missed out on any of the details. 

Anthropological study gives us a brief understanding of human societies, cultures

and their development. It is the study of human beings and their ancestors through time and space in relation to physical character, environment and culture.

Different branches of anthropology have been dealt with to gain an in-depth understanding about the people in kothaballuguda. These include socio- cultural anthropology, physical and linguistic anthropology.

Socio-cultural anthropology deals with several aspects like economic, political, ecological, psychological and religious anthropology.

Economic anthropology represents the nature of trade and market systems, production, consumption and distribution of goods.

Political anthropology concentrates on the political process and function of legitimate authority, law, justice and sanctions in simple societies.

The study of cross cultural variations in psychological traits were carried out under psychological anthropology.

The relationship between the villagers and their environment was analysed with the help of ecological anthropology.

Physical anthropology is characterised by various divisions like ethnology, demography, nutritional anthropology and medical anthropology. Ethnology is the study of human diversities.

Demography is an important aspect of anthropology which deals with fertility, mortality, growth, age, sex structure and spatial distribution.

Medical anthropology analyses the different disease patterns and their impact on society while nutritional anthropology emphasises on the nutritional perspective of the people and their subsequent growth and development.

Linguistic anthropology deals with the relationship between language and cultural cognition as well as cultural behavior.

Thus, socio-cultural, physical and linguistic anthropology together helped us analyse, understand and become aware of the lives of the people in the village.

Imageability is the documentation , synthesis and

analysis in the form of images. Several on-site sketches were drawn and photographs were taken to have a better understanding of the village. These images helped us visualise and imagine the various happenings of the village, activities of the villagers and the ambience of the neighborhood.

Imagibility also helps in understanding and visualising the past. This form of documentation started with a mind map that helped us understand the evolution of the place. Sketches of imported pathways, landmarks, and street views were done to help us envision the village as a whole. The visuals of the daily activities helped us conceive their ways of life in a better manner. A puppet show was also conducted which portrayed the life of a villager from dawn to dusk. This form of data synthesis had a great impact on everyone as they were able to imagine and conceive the lives of the people in kothaballuguda with ease.

Geographical analysis gives us an insight into various features of the region

like topography, climate, vegetation, soil type, etc. This study gives us a brief understanding on how the natural factors and elements present on and off the site influence peoples’ lifestyle, culture, built form, etc. The analysis is conducted with the help of various maps, each concentrating on and highlighting the essential features involved in the study.

Geographical analysis began with the study on the nature of the slope and contour levels. These are essential factors that determine the water flow, drainage services and construction techniques( type of foundation, orientation of building, etc). The different types of land uses were identified to help distinguish between agricultural land, unused areas and land used for construction.

A brief study on vegetation, soil type and infrastructural facilities like road networks,electricity and water supply was conducted. The data collected was then used to identify the locally available materials of construction, the time period of construction (age of the buildings) and the evolution of the settlement.

This analysis includes synthesis of data about the daily activities of the people including their gathering spaces, circulation and landmarks of the village. A detailed analysis on climate was conducted.

Geographical analysis helped us understand how the lives of the people are interconnected with nature, and the way their dwellings are constructed without disturbing or destroying the natural environment. We learnt about how people lived in harmony with their surroundings.

Technical study gives us a brief outlook on how a built form plays a major role

in people’s lifestyle and activities.

The study was first done in detail and then the relationships were compared according to certain criteria like space, roof type, construction materials, circulation,orientation etc.

This study further shows us how people have implemented their traditional knowledge for the construction of their houses.

This study further speaks on various analysis that includes- Anthropometry(the interior and the exterior space that are designed with sufficient space to perform daily activities),The houses that visually reflect the architectural principles ( axis,symmetry,etc.) in each space,Analysis on shadow (the activities that takes place beneath the shadow of the roof),Construction technique ( which involves the vernacular style like,wattle and daub, mud walls ,bamboos ,etc) ,Aesthetical factors ( doors, carving done on the eaves board , the storage pit, joineries that are done with the timber to support the structure ).

This study thaught us about the rural settlement( like ,how the settlement needs to be done along the contour lines ), and how to design a space with the locally available materials and protect them against exterior factors (climatic conditions and changes) , It is also necessary to respect and protect the natural factors ( green lands ,forest areas,mountains,rock sculptures )that are in and around, which are the uniqueness of the place, And the comfort living within the space that is designed by the inhabitants themselves based on their requirements .

It was an awesome experience. Each and every moment of those days,a long

travel with friends,stepping in a place – top of the mountain, with green nature around,getting ready for pilot study in sleepy morning,coming back for a nap and a sudden voice saying that the sheets with data collected today must be done tonight,obviously have to forget about the nap and start with night work. Finally after shutting the door to sleep, friends used to knock the door and question why are u sleeping so early? (And the time was already 1am).. It is actually so interesting, when u walk into a place ,where u don’t even know the language of that place and your work completely involves in collecting data from those people, only by communicating. The most shocking moment is when u r asked to collect info about the built form in that place and u accept it with smile, hiding the fear inside ( documenting a house, without knowing the language and the look of those people with mind voice, step into my house if u can.. Isn’t it quite shaking)..

But the job was not that tough, the people came to know that we doesn’t know their language and they started understanding in our way.They themselves started explaining about their space and our job became easier.They were so good and their kids getting ready for school with drowning eyes and the men taking the cattle to farm land, women’s preparing food and chatting with their neighbors .This doesn’t end with that, those days in Arraku valley and the village Kothaballuguda created many magical moments which cannot be forgotten and holds a major place in our hearts that will stay green forever..

Rurals took me into another new world…all my senses got activated once

again…smell of the mud, the beautiful greenery , taste of the local food, the cool breeze touching my skin, noises made by those laughing kids…those all little things made my heart touch…I have visited araku once before…but this time… with a different perspective…one thing that I can strongly say…IF WE REMOVE ALL THE TERMINOLOGY IN ARCHITECTURE NOTHING REMAINS EXCEPT SENSE – THE COMMON SENSE…that’s where vernacular is…

In village ,no one taught them how to make timber joineries or the construction methodologies…THE NEED TAUGHT THE PEOPLE HOW TO DESIGN AND CREATE… As a team coordinator….things never went like.. how I planned the before day…then I realised and coordinated with what ever happened at that moment.

Rurals took out the hidden talent from each and everyone.

Apart from all the above…I gained good friends( the best gang )…best memories…memorable moments…sleepless nights…no.of coffee’s I prepared…it also brought out a chef inside me…haha…

When I came to know that Rurals are gonna end…I can’t explain how emotional I was…time flew away…waiting for many more group works ahead.

first thing came to our mind about rurals are group works , misunderstandings , comparison of work, redos , presentantion skills , creativities , night stays, no sleep , 7 cups of coffee per day , outings , vivas , juries etc., . Beyond all these I thank to my staff who helped me to bring out my creativity, hard working skills with in me on the process. And also I thank and love my friends who kept me active and happy without minding my mistakes I’ve done in rurals . The lesson I learned from rurals experience was , “THERE ARE MANY CHANCES TO PROVE ,WHO YOU ARE? , BUT THE CHANCES MUST BE MADE BY YOURSELF WHICH WILL SHOW YOU UP UNIQUE” . I don’t get where to start my conversation.I personally got new Friends, there

likes and dislikes . Especially my level of scariness due to hen and cock have been reduced. We suffered a lot with language but I suffered with butler Telugu there .

The headache was the music played in each corner of the hotel. Without network in mobile. The review at 1.00 at night. The fun we made on each other with teachers at review. We started to know about what sleeplessness night is. Deep mam was always there with us 24/7 when we were worried, which was the happiest thing . Mam know our working capacity and our skills. She trusted us a lot that trust was the main aim to achieve that great success we were able to give to our gang.

We fought with other gang which was on other side, but my gang always they supported each other . I am happy to say that I am going to travel with the same gang for next 3years, but without any cock or hen

Those 9 days of our rural study.we learnt many new things daily and we

enjoyed as well. We started at 9 in the morning and worked till 5 in the village.

Communication was major problem for most of us.But still we managed and collected information about the village.we used to have a review at 12pm with all those information we collected that day.

This semester is unforgettable. We had night outs. They were fun and happy moments.

We were united by class , helped each other and made our viva a great show.

Rurals has taught me a lot ,about people their culture and each and every

detail their life style had..and its been a great chance given to know about them and study.The first day we visited and the day we were coming back had a drastic difference because of the memories we had and the weather there (its too cool though) and every single day has been so new and exciting and those late night works and the weird sleeping postures. Every single piece of rurals is a beautiful memory.and after coming back here which was the remaining part,this was another new experience ,the way we learnt to work as a team and different talents potrayed and the amount of effort each and everyone had put by pushing their limits.the amount of time we’ve been together and the great fun we had..and also the final review was the one moment (the goosebumps one) and the work we have done was so satisfying and we were so happy as a team and I felt thatd’d’.we had times when we were discouraged and we had times when we were worried and yet we kept pushing and did it,words cant express all those moments. Rural study 2k19 has been a marvelous memoryand from the bottom of my heart it is.

It was really a great experience we had in our rural trip to kothaballuguda

village, araku Valley. In the process of learning we also had great fun with all our batch mates.we made unforgettable memories in this trip. We learnt a lot through our faculty members and also people of that settlement. The village we’ve been to is a tribal settlement so the culture and their activities are quite unique and also ancient. We came across different people over there and also in our social survey we learnt different problems which they are facing. The village is located in a hill station so the climate over there is cool covered with greenary all over the place. It was also a great opportunity for us to know about each other through group works.

With such a friendly staff we had great fun and lot of joy. It was really a wonderful trip with lots of fun and joy.

This is the best long trip I’ve ever been to. I had the best time there. From the

starting till the end of the trip there was fun and equal quantum of learning. This was the time when I actually started socialising with my classmates and I ended up getting really good friends. Our rurals was the BEST...And personally I had many good as well as bad

experiences. The tiring bus journey filled with dance, music, dumb charades And many more made it joyful and memorable experience.The stressful night works in araku was full of teamwork, bamboo chicken, laughter and many more.The survey in the village was the horrible thing where people used to talk to me for hours and thought that I am a government official. But this survey made many people in that village to share their problems with us who had no one to share their problems with.

The early morning bath which was horrifying bcoz the climate would be somewhere near 15 degree celcius and we had no heater working at that time.The 15minute auto ride which was filled with beautiful sceneries around us.The night outs we did with “n”number of coffees accompanying us the whole night.The number of redos we got made us think in a different perspective each and every time.The differences between everyone were short and sweet.Last but not the least our Mentors who stood by our side and encouraged each one of us to do better work without whom we wouldn’t have been able to present a great show.

And these sums up whole rurals and today we are happy with the outcome and the response.

This rural studio was an experience of a lifetime. It taught me perseverance,

patience , persistence and smart work. Throughout the semester I was worried about how we were going to put up a ‘great show’ on the final review day.It was the first time I had visited araku valley and this rural study helped me learn to appreciate the traditional, vernacular style of architecture followed by the people of kothaballuguda.

Each and every day I spent in the village was filled with zeal and enthusiasm. I miss those blissful yet hectic days I spent with the villagers, interacting with them and documenting their dwellings. I can never forget the amount of fun I had on the last day- visit to the museum, enjoying the beautiful scenery, our funny boat ride, dancing around the campfire, I was filled with joy and amusement. Our visit to the borra caves on our return back instilled a feeling of positivity within me.I had tons of fun with my classmates and teammates, preparing sheets, analysing data and getting ready for the reviews. During the course of these four months, new friendships blossomed, we had sleepless nights, quarrels and misunderstandings amongst ourselves. Yet all of us had a smile on our faces when we finally displayed our work.I have to thank all our faculty members for trusting us and encouraging us to keep working with the same determination and enthusiasm throughout the semester.

THIS RURAL STUDY IS A MEMORY THAT WILL BE ETCHED IN MY HEART FOREVER.

The rural experience is one of the unforgettable experience and moment.

The one day journey was very fun and we enjoyed the journey by having a lot of fun like dancing and singing. Araku valley is a place where we stayed for rurals, and kothaballuguda was the village choosen for our rurals., which is very near to the place where we stayed. We stayed and studied each and every part of the village for 4 days. The village was completely filled with greenary. Also, the place was very cold. We identified many different types of construction techniques in kothaballuguda. Also we worked as a group and had lots of fun together. We had entertainment the day before we left araku Valley. We went to Borra caves after leaving the place we’ve stayed. Borra cave is one of the popular tourist spot. Then we left the Andhra pradesh and our rural trip was ended. Eventhough the rural trip has ended, the fun we had together in rural trip will stay in our heart and never gets faded.

My rural experience started with excitementand ended with heart full of

emotion. As I love travelling I enjoyed journey very much with friends. And when I reached araku, by seeing that climate and nature present there I started enjoying it from that moment. And the works we’ve done in that village as a team, sudden night reviews, sleepless nights… in between all these coffee saved me to manage these. Personally I met lot of people in that village and they became so close to me.

And I got to know about their daily life and also some funny illegal relationships between them which made me know that education is important to know how to live in the society. After seeing that I thanked my parents because of giving me this wonderful life and values to me.

Experience the experience…. I learnt that in rurals. This trip makes a complete understanding of nature, people, culture and voice of all creatures. It took us 7 days in kothabaluguda but it gave lifetime memories. This trip makes a huge impact to my life and it helps us to identify our strength and weakness. Twist and turns of the village roads gives excitement and at the same time it shows the way to the learning experience . In simple way my rurals is all about learning with fun.

This rurals gave me a new way to look at the world. It was a real struggle for all of us, those tough days after we came from the village . But all got vanished in our last day of rural trip, we shouted with joy after the review, with full of pain and realizing this is the end of our rurals. Yeah!

Our Rural journey started with an ultimate fun and super excitement. We

were so eager to visit the place. The village which was so beautiful ,which made it outstanding with green lands around and cool climate that drizzles often. It was always a sleepy wake On the morning, and we went for the study. We returned back to our stay in the eve., after collecting data ,abt the village . And we used to have review during nights with all the data we’ve collected on that day. Those late nights ( when the next day was already started), we had funfilled times with friends. Our study continued with new experience everyday.We even njoyed some eves playing cricket..The most awaited moment..that camp fire night, with dance and music and those precious moments,which is the most unforgettable and best moments ever..

- Yeah this word brought us more excitement when We were in 1st yr . we were eagerly waiting for that trip and we can’t control asking questions to our seniors that how will be the experience and how can we enjoy but they were tired of answering this And when we entered 2nd yr , we started planning for RURALS and when we’ve choosen ARAKU VALLEY – ANDHRA PRADESH for rural study, first thought comes to our mind is 14hrs journey – Bus travel – fun -food- dance – Music – games – unlimited talks.. Etc..etc.. We forgot that we are going for a village study it’s totally like a fun trip with our Friends . Bus journey is something special with our friends that dance , music Yeah these are Memories forever . And that place where we reached , we just got admired by nature . That ten days we can’t forget – late night works- submission-midnight review-sleepless night – sleepless talks – fun in boys room – sharing food- last day dance – music – more and more ,yeah we also learned some basic architecture used in those village . Though we learned less, we created Many Many Many MEMORIES which can’t be erased and the Main reason for these things to happen is Our faculty members Deepa Mam and Anju mam , they are not just teachers they were like Best friends .. For all the negative comments and workload that I kept hearing regarding

the rural trip right from when I joined college…I was not really excited about it in my first year. But as we kept nearing it…I just wanted to approach it like any other study tour or trip. But trust me. It was not. Not even close. From not getting any sleep at all…for like straight 10 days…to crying…to laughing out loud… to secretly smuggling food…and so much more. Google was my best friend that entire trip…since I had to translate every basic necessity in telugu or just stick to a telugu classmate and just keep smiling along and not get beaten up. I could keep rambling on about that region as it was so damn beautiful…but that place felt like my own streets by the end of the trip. If there was an opportunity to go back and change anything about it…I wouldn’t. It’ll always be one amazing memory and learning experience..not only on architecture but on how to adjust in life as well.

that too a village in a valley or near to the hill station is a fabulous way enjoy ur trip….The morning scene of a village is really a wonderful experience to remember. Watching the sunrise is really a memorable experience. Unlike most city folk the villagers get up very early in the morning and start their daily chores. They are really hard working people.

More than a chance to know architecture better I saw this as an opportunity to know the people around me better

Yes I did learn a lot about the way they built all those beautiful structures with what they have and a lot more internally, but also I see this as a chance to explore who I am , introspection is the right word I’m looking for .

It was very hard in the beginning to accept things and suit myself to my surroundings cuz it was obviously hard for a person who has never even got inside an auto before , I’ve experienced it all now and I gotta say I did have a little fun .

I was amazed by the way every team had an understanding between all of em And the way they helped each and every one of em .

It was an experience of lifetime but I’d mostly experience this only once and never go back , it’s something that only had to be thought me and it did make me realise a lot of things.

- Noel First I have a doubt that why so far for the rural study which was full of one day journey. And by reaching the village I got answer for my doubts. And it is the first time I saw a village which is at the heap of mountain and I also shocked by hearing that they all are having cattle but they don’t use milk.

Travel : I was so tired by clapping my hands to our guys dance. and bored of songs.

Experience of rurals : And we have reached the land of nature. so we played cricket in green meadows. we all worked a lot at the village at day time, and worked lot and lot in our shelter at night time for viva. On education side we got more and more knowledge. I felt that we can’t work on groups again.

The first five days of rural, we felt homesick but the next five days were

joyful. AL the projects were done only in groups. There was no individual work or project. I worked in all the four groups. It was an awesome experience. I really enjoyed it by learning. I almost learned all the techniques and basics and was thorough on it.

Rural study is one of the best experience we had in our third semester. I

was very excited for our trip before 10 days and packed all my stuff. It was our first collage trip. Almost after 24 hrs of journey we got tired. After reaching araku Valley we freshed up and then our staff selected two villages for our study, our batch got kothaballuguda village. First day we went through the village for pilot study, to know everything about our village. The village was an indigenous one and also a backward village. Some people were unhappy of our presence and some got mad on us even. Then we’ve started our work based on our faculty member’s instruction. We were asked to put everything i.e the data which we’ve collected from the village on sheets, we also had late night reviews. We’ve learned a lot from our rural study. After completing our work we went through the village, we had lots fun there, bamboo chicken was a famous dish there we all loved it. The last day of our trip was amazing, we had some local people performing a tribal dance called dhimsa. Even though we worked a lot, we had great fun in our rurals, it was a great experience we had.

We got our bus near our collage at 3:00 pm. The day and night journey

to the village increased our curiosity about that place. We passed our journey by playing music, movies and jokes with our friends. Almost after 24 hrs journey we reached the place. The climate of that place is so pleasing with cool weather. We stayed in a lodge on the hill station. The food was really good. We started our work by collecting data from the village. The data which we’ve collected included their culture, built forms, their construction and materials, source of income, clothes they wear etc. The main occupation of the village is agriculture. We’ve divided their houses based on the materials etc like Mangalore tile roof, thatch roof etc. We also collected all technical data and measurements needed for our study. We stayed in our village for 10 days and then left to araku Valley and then left to Chennai.

Villages are the place where u can feel our environment bare , people there

are early to bed and early to rise and so they are naturally healthy doing all manual works themselves..

I have experienced a lot of things through this rural study ,especially the way they deal with the climatic conditions , their religious and cultural practices they follow and the lifestyle of those people .
