at a glance The Department of Parks and Recreation is tasked with maintaining Costello Park, the Manassas Park Community Center, Signal Hill Park, Signal Bay Waterpark, the City’s historical sites, and block parks. The Community Center features two full basketball courts, an indoor pool, fitness rooms, and rental spaces including a 3,480 sq. ft. banquet hall.

The City of Manassas Park, Department of Parks and Recreation is committed to the provision of quality leisure services for the residents of Manassas Park. Over the years, through the many changes the City has endured, the Department of Parks and Recreation has responded to the growing needs of the community by continuing to support the Governing Body’s vision to be the “Premier Northern Virginia Community to live, work, and raise a family”.

POLICIES Registration Registration is on a “first come, first serve basis.” You will only be notified if the class/program is cancelled. Late registrations may be accepted if space is available with no reduction in fee. We encourage registering online at www.ManassasParkCommunityCenter.com.

Forms & Fees Each class/program must be accompanied by payment. You may register and pay for classes online at www.ManassasParkCommunityCenter.com or in person at the Community Center located at 99 Adams Street, Manassas Park, VA 20111. Checks are to be made payable to “City of Manassas Park.” There is a $50 returned check fee for any check returned by the bank.

Cancellations The Department of Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel any class/ program which does not meet the minimum enrollment. All programs with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled 5 days prior to the program start date.

PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! Non-City Residents Most of the fee based classes/programs are available to non-city residents at an additional fee. Please see the individual class/program for additional information.

Inclement Weather In the event of inclement weather the Department of Parks and Recreation will follow the local government cancellation schedule. If classes/programs are cancelled, every attempt will be made to re-schedule the class/program.

The Department of Parks and Recreation seeks citizens of all backgrounds and interests to help guide our services. Member representation is on a volunteer basis, so if you are interested, we would love to hear from you!

Dog Park Committee This committee is tasked with raising awareness of the dog park as well as developing and managing dog park special events. Committee members help advertise events, facilitate discussions with the community, and seek and secure partnerships and opportunities to enhance the dog park.

Health and Wellness Committee Charged with raising awareness and addressing wellness issues, we are seeking dynamic citizens to help us achieve these goals. Help us work to combat childhood obesity, promote healthy living, and encourage active aging on a citywide scale.

Special Events Committee This committee assists staff in the planning, marketing, fundraising, coordination, and implementation of the special events hosted by the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Membership Committee Committed to customer service excellence, this committee is focused on Community Center membership specials, promotions, hospitalities, member retention, and appreciation through events and programs. Your participation on this committee will assist us in keeping customer satisfaction our number one priority.

With every rental, on site staff will set up the tables and chairs according to your floorplan at no additional cost. These small parks, ranging in size from a quarter acre to one acre, are located in the residential neighborhood of the eastern area of the City and primarily service the residents local to each site.

Block Parks are open year round from 7:30 a.m. until dusk.

All parks and facilities are open to the public and may be scheduled for specific use through the Parks and Recreation Department. The rental application is a request only, not a guarantee. A Rental Request Application is required for all facility reservations. Special Permits, in addition to the Field Use Application, may be required for after hours events, special events, or group use.

Payment must accompany a Rental Request Application. The Department does not accept tentative reservations. Cancellations must be made at least 10 days in advance in order to receive a refund. Applications are available at the Manassas Park Community Center. All rentals are subject to availability and must be booked and paid for 10 days in advance of event. Certain restrictions may apply. Deposits are a one time refundable fee, restrictions may apply.

Costello Park

INFORMATION The Manassas Park Dog Park features a large and small dog run for your pets to exercise and interact in a safe environment with other dogs • Hours: 8:00am-dusk • Dogs must be current on all vaccinations.

• Dogs must be leashed when entering and exiting the dog park.

• For the safety of your dog(s) and other park visitors, choke, prong (pinch), and spike collars are strictly prohibited. If you use these types of collars, remove them before entering the park.

• No children under the age of 16 are permitted unless accompanied by an adult. Children have a tendency to scream and run when excited, which can trigger a dog’s prey drive or natural instinct to chase. For this reason and for the safety of your children, we do not recommend bringing small children and infants into the dog park.

• Aggressive dogs are not permitted on the premises. Dogs must be removed at the first sign of aggression.

• Female dogs in heat are prohibited from entering the park.

• Dogs over six months must be spayed or neutered.

• Dog owners must be in the park and within view of their dogs at all times.

• All off-leash dogs must be under voice control of their owners.

• Dog owners must keep their leash in hand at all times.

• Please do not bring dog food into the park.

• Owner must clean up dog feces. Seal waste in the provided bags before disposing in designated receptacles.

• Fill any holes your dog digs.

• Proof of a current rabies vaccination and license is required upon request of a police or animal control officer. Tags may serve as proof.

• Failure to abide by the park rules may result in loss of privileges or owners may be ticketed.

• Use of dog park is at owners’ and pets’ risk. *Park occassionally closed during normal hours for maintenance and special events.

HISTORICAL SITES

INFORMATION

The Conner House

A nationally registered historical site, this antebellum stone house, circa 1855, is located in the central region of the City, in view of City Hall. The Conner House is currently being restored and is not open to the general public.

Signal Hill Monument

A nationally registered historical landmark, this 13-acre monument site is located in the western end of the City, adjacent to Signal Hill Park. Signal Hill is open year round from 7:30am until dusk.

Camp Carondolet

A nationally registered historical landmark, this 8-acre Civil War encampment is located in the Blooms Crossing subdivision adjacent to Cougar Elementary School. A series of nature trails are available to the public year round from 7:30am until dusk.

The Georgia Cemetery

Included in the Camp Carondelet nomination is a Civil War cemetery located in the direct vicinity of Camp Carondelet in the Blooms Crossing subdivision.

The Union Mill Trestle

A key structure in the Civil War, this is located in the last few remaining acres of the once Union Mill Park near the VRE lot and Generals Ridge Golf Course. This site is not accessible to the general public.

Field Application: Athletic fields and park grounds are available for rental to registered leagues and group users. Cost for permits vary on the type of usage and the duration of the request. All spring field usage requests are accepted beginning February 1st of each calendar year for a March 15th through July 1st season. All fall field usage requests are accepted beginning July 1st of each calendar year for an August 1st – November 15th season.

Senior Strength and Stretch

These thirty-minute workouts target every major group of the abdominal muscles for a tight, toned tummy and slim waist. Seasonal class: 6/7-8/23.

Designed to help seniors improve their cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. Medicine balls, dumbbells, exercise bands, and stability balls will be incorporated into this functional, exciting, and low impact class.

Aqua Zumba® If you enjoy ZUMBA®, you will be sure to enjoy Zumba in the water. Zumba utilizes the principles of fitness interval training/resistance training to maximize caloric output, fat burning, and total body toning. You do not need to be a swimmer to take this class.

Senior Yoga This gentle yoga class is for individuals 55 years of age and up. Senior yoga will help to increase mobility, inspire tranquility, and promote an overall sense of well being.

Aquasize

Water Walking

This class provides a low-impact, full body exercise while helping you tone your muscles.

Water’s buoyancy supports the body’s weight, which reduces stress on the joints and minimizes pain. Water provides 12 times the resistance of air, so as you walk, you’re really strengthening and building muscle.

Beginner Yoga Beginner’s Yoga will cover the fundamentals of yoga poses and breathing techniques. This class will also focus on strength and flexibility as well as breath awareness and relaxation.

Body Sculpting A lightweight dumbbell workout moved to the beat of the music. Burn calories as you flow through a variety of exercises to sculpt and tone your body! Notice improvements in your muscle tone, posture, balance, and strength.

Boot Camp Boot Camp is designed for those desiring to increase cardiovascular fitness and increase muscular strength more efficiently. Boot Camp is for the beginner to the advanced enthusiast. Workout in a team environment while challenging yourselves with others to reach your personal fitness goals.

Buddy Yoga Buddy Yoga will focus on the foundations of yoga while providing plenty of modifications for physically or intellectually disabled adults.

Butt Burn Express Work your butt, thighs, and hips during this thirty-minute workout, and fit into your skinny jeans again! Seasonal class: 6/7-8/23.

Functional Fitness Flow This class uses the resistance of water to challenge your muscles while allowing the buoyancy to ease the strain on the joints. The goal of this class is to increase your muscle strength, balance, flexibility, and range of motion.

Zumba® ZUMBA® is a program that fuses Latin and International music and dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness system! The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that help to tone and sculpt the body. It provides a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps.

swim lessons Adapted Aquatics (Ages 5-18) We have designed a swimming program for individuals with disabilities to be able to learn water safety, swim techniques, and to feel comfortable in the water. Each participant must have an aide (or parent) in the water during the lesson. Aides provided at no additional charge if arranged with the Aquatics Manager in advance.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Course (Ages 15+) You must be at least 15 years old by the last class, and you must attend all classes to be certified. Student must be able to complete the prerequisites in order to complete the class, which include swimming 300m, treading water for 1 minute, and a timed event. Upon completion of the class, certification includes American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED for Lifeguards and is valid for 2 years. MPCC Indoor Pool Information The Manassas Park Community Center natatorium is an NCAA short course certified indoor pool consisting of eight 25 yard lanes, a zero depth entry, and a spa. The pool temperature is maintained at a comfortable 82˚F. Kick boards, pull buoys, and life jackets for patrons are available for use while at the facility.

Certain areas of the pool may not be open for public swimming due to swim lessons, group exercise classes, or league rentals.

NSPF Certified Pool Operators Course (Ages 16+) The National Swimming Pool Foundation’s Certified Pool Operators Course covers safely handling pool chemicals, balancing pool water, and inspecting pools for safety. Signal Bay Waterpark is a 27,000 sqft aquatic facility within Signal Hill Park featuring a zero depth entry leisure pool with water cannons, slides, and a lazy river. Showers are made available for citizen convenience. The Waterpark is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and follows Manassas Park City Schools schedule. Extended Care is before and after school care for children, K-5 grade, attending City of Manassas Park Schools. Extended Care follows the licensing standards of the State of Virginia, Department of Social Services, and offers supervised themed activities, arts and crafts, games, sports, and swimming! Transportation from the City of Manassas Park Schools to the Manassas Park Community Center is provided for after school care. Full service Extended Care days include teacher workdays, breaks, and some holidays. Call for punch card/drop in rates. (PM Punch Cards cover full service days.) th

◊Beginner Dry Needle Sculpting (Felting Craft)◊ (Ages 8-12) In this art class, students will learn the art of sculpting soft figurines using a technique called dry needling. Every first Thursday of the month, we create some of our favorite drinks. Drinks include milkshakes, sparkle punch, Arnold Palmers, and watermelon slushies just to name a few.

Come play this fast-paced version of soccer. Games are played indoors on our basketball courts and teams are made up of five people. If you are a soccer enthusiast, this activity is for you.

Sports Conditioning Whether you are in-season or in-between seasons, you can always improve your conditioning. Join Recreation Leaders as we help push you to your max to make sure that you put your best foot forward when it is time for tryouts or the game.

Team up with other teens and our Recreation Leaders to walk together around the Community Center and Costello Park.

Drop-In Basketball Every Friday after school the Community Center courts are the place to be! The gym is reserved just for you and your friends. Grab your buddies and a basketball, and meet us on the court!

Connect with Your Community Movie Monday Every Monday the Teen Center turns into a mini movie theatre. Grab a spot on the couch with some candy or popcorn and enjoy a great film.

We may watch anything from Disney classics, to motivational movies, to some of the newest releases. All films are rated G - PG-13.

Whether you are an experienced yogi, a seasoned athlete, or have never come close to touching your toes, you won’t regret taking this class.

TGIF We all get excited for Fridays, but now the final Friday of the month will be extra special! We will have a new event to kick off the weekend and cap-off a long month. We will have fun with scavenger hunts, trivia contests, ice cream socials, and more!

In our version of Shark Tank, teens will split up into groups, come up with a proposed product or service, and pitch it to “investors” on the final day of camp. Enjoy our potlucks, the wellness area, pool, active adult programs, and more! Functional Fitness Flow This class uses the resistance of water to challenge your muscles while allowing the buoyancy to ease the strain on the joints. The goal of this class is to increase your muscle strength, balance, flexibility, and range of motion.

Plarning Plarn is plastic bag yarn! You do not need to know how to crochet; you can come and help cut and roll bags all while socializing with the group.

*Puzzle Mania Keep those critical thinking skills honed by collaborating on a group puzzle, Sudoku, or crosswords.

Restorative Aquafit This pool exercise class puts the needs of participants into action by offering low impact exercise that anyone can handle. Our heated indoor pool will help work wonders on achy muscles and joints and help put a spring into your step.

Walking Club Calling all walkers! As we walk and talk, you will be hitting your stride and realizing the heart benefits of a 1,000 steps.

Take One Drama Troupe

(Ages 17+) This one of a kind, special program is a self-facilitated adult social group. This program is designed to meet the needs of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities. Daily activities include arts and crafts, fitness classes, movies, computer, and video games.
