ICS - Success Stories
Markus Kramer Managing Partner at Brand Affairs
Markus holds an MBA from the University of Oxford as well as a degree in FinTech and Future of Commerce from MIT. His career highlights include managing global marketing at Aston Martin, being Chief Marketing Officer at VERTU and the management of EMEA marketing at Harley-Davidson. He took the Management Futures Intensive Coaching Skills (ICS) course.
What first compelled you to sign up for the Management Futures ICS programme? Every year I allocate time for some focused personal development and I found out about the Management Futures ICS course following a word of mouth referral. Coaching was something that really interested me because of the potential impact on my job – both with staff and clients – so I was keen to explore the topic in much more detail. I decided to attend as a self-funded candidate and really push myself to see what I could achieve. What are your memories of the ICS programme itself? Even before the programme started, the preparation was excellent – with professional contact and pre-assessment. The venue was inspiring too and created an excellent learning environment. I remember my arrival was a little hectic. My flight from Switzerland landed, I headed straight from the airport to the course to get started and was delighted to find I was part of a positive, relaxed and focused working group – expertly facilitated by the MF team to create a great atmosphere. The programme was very well structured throughout the five days. Despite the busy start, it was a stress-free experience – the perfect
8
balance of academic input with enough time to reflect and practise the key skills. It was a very special period for me – an opportunity to really take the time for some personal exploration and reflection with a chance to understand how the experience could add value to my life. Without doubt it was an empowering, enabling experience. What impact has the ICS had on your professional development? I took a number of coaching skills and tools from the ICS and still use them in my professional life today in a range of contexts – things like the kipper tie framework for example. What’s great is that, because of the way the programme is structured, you can be flexible in how you apply these skills to your specific circumstances. I’d estimate that I use the skills 10% of the time with my team – during 3-monthly performance talks or when we need to have difficult conversations. The remaining 90% is purely client-focused. So this might be using skills during ongoing discussions or pitches – where things like reflecting a client’s body language or style can be particularly impactful. I also found it reassuring that there were a number of things I was already subconsciously doing prior to the ICS programme but it was very useful to step out of the day to day and understand the potential impact of these skills in more detail.

“Quite simply, the Management Futures ICS course is one of those life-enhancing experiences that everyone should do.” Who would benefit from attending the ICS Programme? While not everyone understands what coaching really is – or the benefits it can bring - I believe anyone would benefit from attending the ICS. For those in leadership positions it represents a chance to develop new skills that you wouldn’t have picked up from a classic education. And for those with regular client contact it’s priceless. In fact, I’d say that anyone in a client-facing role should be compelled to take time to undertake some form of coach skills development. It’s that important and can really transform client relationships. I would also like to reassure anyone thinking about taking the course as a self-funded candidate to sign up for the experience. For me, the self-propelling energy that came from the fact that this was a decision I had taken myself (rather than being part of a company programme) was extremely powerful. Like others in my position, I felt I was truly switched on and did everything I could to push myself to the limits of personal development. And finally, is it possible to sum up your ICS experience in one sentence? Quite simply, the Management Futures ICS course is one of those life-enhancing experiences that everyone should do.

ICS - Success Stories
Nina Hahn Senior Vice President of Production Development at Nickelodeon
Nina Hahn, embarked on our Intensive Coaching Skills (ICS) Programme. With some previous knowledge of Management Futures Nina undertook the course with the intention of gaining fundamental skills and tools required to succeed in Executive Coaching. She is now using the tools successfully on a daily basis both in her professional and personal life.
Given that you took the ICS several years ago, what are your memories of the programme? I remember it very vividly. Before I went in I was apprehensive, as there are many coaching programmes out there with lots of people now professing to be coaches. Although I already knew a member of the Management Futures team - which meant the programme already held some provenance for me - I thought it might be a bit ‘kum ba yah’ for me! So, I entered with some trepidation. But within the first half hour I felt completely safe to trust it. I bought into it immediately. Looking back, it was a transformative experience which grew from strength to strength as the course progressed. A lot of that was down to the course facilitator and their style and the way the information is shared. A lot of it is unspoken, so you can take it or leave it. There is an honest and candid approach – they don’t need you to believe but encourage you to take as much or as little away from it as you want. It was really great. I also had a particularly interesting group of people and although we all worked at slightly different paces this didn’t impede each individual’s trajectory. After an hour I was really in to it; addicted, hungry and fascinated. It was a great experience. It’s great to hear that the experience was a really positive one for you. How have you used the skills you learned? I went on to undertake the full certification and worked directly with the course leader to take
10
my learning to the next level. I didn’t do the final paper in the end as I ran out of time but I embarked on some more specific coaching experience after the initial taster sessions on the ICS which had fired my enthusiasm for coaching! After the course, I put my name down for the coaching programme at Viacom (which owns Nickelodeon) and I’m now using my skills a lot as one of their official coaches. I also use my skills outside of work where applicable. What surprised me the most about my learning experience were the tools that the ICS gives you to use in all interactions with any other individuals – to negotiate situations, with your kids, your friends and your partner. The only downside as a super fan is figuring out when not to use it! It’s easy to get over-zealous and have it take over every aspect of your life. I’ve used it 150%. It was like a light switch moment for me. It sounds as though the skills have become firmly embedded in a central way in your life… I use them everywhere – they’ve been a big help with teenagers! They’ve generally helped the way I think. I’ve not yet used them on myself, but I have with friends and in every other aspect of my life. If I had to pick one aspect I use the most then I think that would have to be open questions. Obviously I use these with clients but also generally out and about in the world in
managementfutures.co.uk
“Looking back, it was a transformative experience which grew from strength to strength as the course progressed.” discussions with people - especially with a prickly person or somebody who is very ego-driven. Open questions can be super helpful, and I didn’t make the distinction between open and closed before. Moving on from skills, at Management Futures we work hard at providing a high level of support for delegates throughout the programme and beyond. How did you feel MF supported you along your ICS journey? They’re like your parents – always at the end of the phone if you need them. There was 100% support whenever I asked. One time I was struggling to remember the peak/flow exercise from the course which I needed for a client and I’d lost my manual which was like my bible! I emailed to ask for the manual and a digital copy was sent straight away which was fantastic. I actually met up with the course facilitator 3 years after completing the course and it was as if no time had passed. We had some really fun and thought-provoking conversations. What I liked most is while they’re your support they’re also your colleagues. And, finally, can you think of five words that would describe the ICS to someone who’d never heard of it before? Transformative, authentic, intimate, efficient and fairly priced.

ILM Level 5 - Success Stories
Patrick Seal
General Practitioner at the Adam Practice
Patrick has been a full-time GP for 28 years and a GP trainer for 20 years, working in one of the largest practices in Dorset. He undertook the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring with MF to develop his coaching skills in order to continue a role supporting younger doctors.
What made you decide to do the qualification? Someone recommended it to me from the Department of Health as I’d expressed an interest in learning more about coaching. The ICS course was recommended initially, and it was while I was on the course that I decided to do the Certificate and Diploma. What made you decide to do the qualification? I attended a bespoke in house week-long Intensive Coaching Skills (ICS) course with MF in Bristol in partnership with the North West Leadership Academy and NHS England. Following that, I wanted to consolidate my learning - developing my coaching skills and gaining a deeper understanding of coaching. What were your expectations of the course? Partly it was myth busting and wanting to understand what coaching is and also what coaching is not. I was really keen to get insights into the whole world of coaching. What did you like about the course? It was superbly run and I felt that all ten people on the course built a really strong bond. It was a very good introduction into the practicalities of coaching coupled with a bit of theory to help us understand the tools that can be used as a coach. We gained really useful insight into the nature of coaching and the experience of conducting coaching. I particularly enjoyed the fact that at the end we had real life clients to practice our coaching skills on. How was the support from the MF team? The three course facilitators were very experienced
16
and we received good support from our dedicated supervisor when we were writing our assignments as part of getting the qualification. What was your biggest challenge? I’d say it was having to unlearn the closed questions we more typically ask as GPs and, instead, learn to ask open questions. As a GP you’re often asking closed questions in order to get to a diagnosis but, as a coach, you have to help coachees find their own answers – a very different process. GPs are used to being problem fixers but this process turned that approach on its head. Which parts of the qualification did you find particularly useful/valuable? I think the distinction between coaching and mentoring was very useful as it made me think about how I might continue to be involved with fellow professionals in the years ahead. I’ve been a GP for 28 years and I’ll probably retire from general practice in the next 2-3 years, but I want to remain involved with my colleagues in some way. Coaching is a great way to do that. I’ve been a GP trainer for over 20 years and I’m keen to go on having a role supporting younger doctors. Which elements of the qualification are you using in your role now? Since completing the ILM Level 5 Certificate we have set up a coaching faculty in Dorset, which is based in a primary care workforce centre. I have been appointed its GP faculty lead. And has it had an impact on your personal life too? I’m probably better at asking open questions with my wife, adult children and others!
managementfutures.co.uk
“They challenged me but in an enjoyable way.” Would you recommend this qualification to a colleague? If so, why? Yes – for those interested in developmental conversations that are more than an appraisal. Coaching skills provide you with the experience to do that really well. What advice would you give other people doing a qualification, so they get the most out of it? You need to have the experience by clocking up the hours face-to-face with coachees and then maybe discover your particular niche area for coaching development. My own particular interest is with GP colleagues at crossroad points in their career. They will get more job satisfaction if they have had the chance to test that they are doing the right thing. How will you use your coaching skills in the future? I am actively coaching, as well as being a fulltime GP. After retirement I intend to go on using coaching skills at a greater level. How would you describe your experience with MF? MF is a highly professional organisation with an experienced team, skilled leadership and excellent course materials. They challenged me but in an enjoyable way. Would you recommend MF to others? If so, why? Undoubtedly. I found MF very well organised, the material is excellent and they help you to do the myth busting around coaching as well as helping you to acquire skills that can be used on a day-to-day basis at work and home.

ILM Level 7 - Success Stories
Nicola Thompson HR, training, life & career coaching services Nicola began her MF journey with the Intensive Coaching Skills (ICS) Programme and has since completed the ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching & Mentoring. She now has her own consultancy business providing Talent & Organisational Development services to businesses and Life & Career Coaching services to individuals.
What made you decide to do the qualification?
And has it had an impact on your personal life too?
I had been coaching since the beginning of my career in a large consultancy firm where I coached many candidates through leadership qualifications. Coaching continued as a key part of my career, both leading teams and supporting managers with people and organisational development issues. The qualification was a way to consolidate those skills and check in that my coaching style and approach was best practice.
Absolutely, I find myself slipping into ‘coaching mode’ with colleagues, friends and relatives all the time! An example that has had a major impact on family life is supporting my son’s application to a commercial airline academy to train as a pilot. He was just 18 and studying for A-Levels and had some doubts that he could demonstrate the confidence and life skills to stand out in such a competitive field (only 4% of applicants are successful in getting on the programme). Coaching techniques helped elicit some fantastic examples of his leadership skills and calmness under pressure from experiences in the Army Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and charity challenges. He is now graduating ground school and will be off to Portugal soon for the next stage of flight training. Whatever my coaching helps someone achieve in a work setting, this will be my stand out success!
What were your expectations of the course? I was very open-minded about it. The focused nature of the Intensive Coaching Skills (ICS) programme appealed to me and my learning style and was a great way to start the process. I was looking forward to meeting a wide range of people and I definitely did. It was a lovely mix of people with different reasons for being there but a shared passion for coaching. Although there were some nerves to begin with, after the first couple of hours we got really immersed in coaching and the facilitators created a comfortable environment. By day 1 felt I was on the right course and had made the right decision. What was your biggest challenge? Probably getting the assignments done and balancing work and home life as a single parent. However, looking back, I’m pleased that I chose the Level 7 due to the fact that it stretched me. This meant that I felt so much more confident in my abilities and credentials when I stepped into self-employment and the marketing I needed to undertake associated with that.
20
Would you recommend this qualification to a colleague? If so, why? It’s perfect for anyone who is serious about being a professional coach and wants to underline that with sound training and a qualification that is renowned and speaks for itself. There are other cheaper qualifications on the market that are quick to complete, but I would advise someone to invest in themselves and their future in a qualification that is of such good quality. What advice would you give other people doing a qualification, so they get the most out of it? To really clear and dedicate the time it deserves. The ICS is perfect for people with busy lives as the distractions are fewer and you’re immersed in it.
managementfutures.co.uk
“The qualification began to reawaken my desire to coach even more and, ultimately, work for myself.” But the assignments and case studies on the ILM Level 7 are more tricky. You need to work closely with your supervisor who is there to support you with any issues. How will you use your coaching skills in the future? Whilst I was thoroughly enjoying my full-time Head of OD role during my studies, the qualification began to reawaken my desire to coach even more and, ultimately, work for myself. It wasn’t long before I had submitted a request for part-time work in order to build my coaching practice and, just a couple of years later, I felt prepared and brave enough to make the full leap. Well into my third year I have no regrets! How would you describe your experience with MF? It’s very professional but also very personal. I had a lot of faith in MF, from the promotional material, administration, course and the support throughout. The trainers and supervisors have a very acute understanding that you also have a life and that the course is tough but worth investing in and will do everything they can to help you get there. Would you recommend MF to others? If so, why? Most definitely, I already have. Whether you’re going on to be a self-employed coach or want to hone your people skills even further as a manager within an organisation, MF will give you an excellent grounding, fantastic support and increased confidence in your abilities. The prestige of the qualification also means that, if self-employed, you’ll have an edge when attracting clients and bidding for work and, if in the market for a new job, you’ll have a well-renowned qualification at a level higher than your competition.

ILM Level 7 - Success Stories
Eilis Parker Managing Director at NHS Elect
Eilis comes from a background as a chartered physiotherapist and has worked in the NHS for all of her career. In the last 15 years she has been working at NHS Elect; a membership network comprising 65 organisations. She initially undertook the ILM Level 7 Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring and then went on to study for the Diploma. What made you decide to do the qualification? Someone recommended it to me from the Department of Health as I’d expressed an interest in learning more about coaching. The ICS course was recommended initially, and it was while I was on the course that I decided to do the Certificate which I later topped up to the Diploma. What were your expectations of the course? I had no expectations going in but quickly got the bug for coaching and thought it could potentially be something I could do for a long time, as part of my job. It was great to be able to go on and do the qualification at my own pace. As anyone who has studied for a qualification while working full time knows, it can be quite demanding and exhausting so it was nice to be able to go at your own pace with the support of MF. What did you like about the course? I loved the fact that it was a mixed group with people from other industries, for example, Sport England and banking. As I’m immersed in the NHS, it was nice to have new colleagues from different backgrounds and to share the similar issues they faced in their working life. What was your biggest challenge? Time! I’ve been lucky enough to have plenty of clients, so I wasn’t searching for clients. The coaching part was lovely, but the academic side required more discipline and time as I had to deploy some self-coaching about why I wasn’t getting on with things! Also, as I’m from a clinical background I’m trained to ask questions, make a diagnosis and tell people what to do
24
next. So learning to coach was the hardest thing I’d had to do in some time. It was a complete mindset change and really flipped everything on its head. I had so many penny-drop moments in the first week, thinking I wish I’d known this before as I would have been a better manager and a better leader. Which parts of the qualification did you find particularly useful/valuable? All of it – submitting the recordings of ourselves coaching, although painful, was really useful to hear again and get feedback from my supervisor. What advice would you give other people doing a qualification so they get the most out of it? Don’t put off doing the Certificate – get on with it. Once you finish the ICS, sign-up and do it quickly. It took me 15 months to get it and I think that made it harder for me. Which elements of the qualification are you using in your role now? Lots of coaching. In the organisation we have 8 people that have been through the ICS. We have a coaching faculty who offer one-to-one and team coaching as part of the NHS Elect offering so we are using it a lot. I’ve done over 300 hours of coaching in the last couple of years. And has it had an impact on your personal life too? Absolutely – my pals all laugh now that they get coached, rather than given advice. They call me up and say: “I need that coaching thing that you do!” They have started to recognise that they want to come to their own solutions rather than

“MF are really professional, supportive and friendly. It was a great way to do the qualification.” be given the solutions, so they try and apply it themselves. I’m creating lots of mini coaches! Would you recommend this qualification to a colleague? If so, why? Absolutely, without a doubt. We’ve put many colleagues through it already. The way it’s set up with MF, the ICS is really immersive and you come out with the ability to coach at the end and can build on it with the qualifications. To practiCe coaching at NHS Elect you now need to have the Certificate, or be working towards it, as a minimum. How will you use your coaching skills in the future? I’ll carry on using them at NHS Elect and then once I get to winding down into retirement in the next couple of years then I’ll hopefully carry on doing coaching on a private basis. How would you describe your experience with MF? Excellent. There was fantastic support from the get-go. Even now we use MF for supervision for people who have qualified. Last week we had Phil come and do a faculty development session so it’s an ongoing relationship. I occasionally ring Tim to think out loud about coaching in general and Elspeth is my supervisor who has recently helped me a lot around a tricky coaching experience. Would you recommend MF to others? If so, why? Yes – I already have both inside the organisation and outside. MF are really professional, supportive and friendly. It was a great way to do the qualification.

Where next? Enabling Leaders, Teams, Organisations and Coaches. Whatever your goals, we’ll help you take action today to enjoy a brighter tomorrow.
Coaching
Leadership Skills
MF coaching is goal-focused and encourages positive sustainable change. Working at pace and depth, we tailor our approach to the individual. By combining support and challenge with practical exercises and techniques, we provide the catalyst for insight, energy and the ability to achieve ambitions.
Plenty of programmes set out to positively change behaviour. Knowing what to do is never enough. With 20 years of research insights and experience we’re clear on the how.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Culture Development
We believe business is about people. It’s about creating the right culture. Having diversity of thought and equity so people can thrive is critical. We help you get there.
The first step in any culture project is to define the behaviours you wish to embed. Sadly, for many, that’s where the process ends. It starts and stops with fancy words. Which simply isn’t enough. We help organisations navigate the whole journey.

Building high performing teams
Teaming
We enable the conditions for high performance in teams. Conditions that get the best out of every individual in pursuit of great ambitions. We nurture strong relationships, prioritising trust and openness. And we enable teams and leaders to do this at pace.
The greater the need for innovation and adaptation, the greater the need for collaboration across boundaries. ‘Teaming’ skills provide an antidote to silos - enabling teamwork on the fly between people who come together rapidly and briefly.
Group Supervision
Internal Coach Development
We’ll help you take your coaching practice forward with the help of small group supervision.
We’ve been training and accrediting internal coaches for more than 20 years. We help organisations with internal messaging, systems and CPD to ensure they achieve the ‘coaching culture’ they aspire to.
