Secret Santa

to those who need it

The disparity between having and have nots in India is striking, shocking and this inextricable mix of poverty is reason enough for us, this Christmas, to be the secret Santa’s, the purveyors of joy and holiday cheer to these children, who could deservedly use a shot of positivity and brightness in their otherwise bleak existence. In fact, as secret Santa for the less fortunate, it also serves as the ideal opportunity of leading by example and demonstrating, initiating, sensitizing our own, highly privileged children into the spirit of giving, the importance of sharing, the value of sensitivity, and affirmative action and simply doing right, doing good. RCBK initiated a program, under Dr Mamta Jain; Director public image; with societies in and around Kandivali East and Borivali – Giving each family to become Secret Santa - the purveyors of joy and holiday cheer to underprivileged children, who could deservedly use a shot of positivity and brightness in their otherwise bleak existence. From the time the idea was floated, to its execution, it took around 3 days. Rotarians and even non-Rotarians volunteered in various societies, and in one and half days we received an overwhelming response with loads and loads of gifts, and more than 1000 gifts were collected – which is now allowing us to reach out to many more orphanages.

“Joy multiplies manifold if it is shared.” RCBK took a pledge this Christmas to be that force multiplier. And who better to target than those in true need!

This holiday season, RCBK picked neighbourhood societies, had volunteers both Rotarians and Non-Rotarians, identified orphanages and old age homes, and in less than 48 hours, from designing posters and gift collection boxes to coordinating with volunteers, spreading the message through society WhatsApp groups, collecting gifts which were beautifully wrapped by hundreds of little Secret Santa’s, collected more than 1000 gifts – a mixture of clothes, gifts, games, books, bedsheets, etc, then partnered with 2 Old age home and 6 orphanages, RCBK became the harbinger of pleasant surprise.

Rtn. Kalpit Jain: "It was indeed a very awesome experience of meeting all the kids who were so enthusiastic and happy on receiving a helping from our side. It fills me with quite a lot of enthusiasm after interacting with the kid who is pursuing commerce and has a dream of student a lot. I will surely interact more with him. Thank you for giving me the opportunity.”

Rtn. Sunil Tiwari: " Visiting Bosco Home was touching. It feels good to know that these children have been given a chance to live again. A lawyer, who had a wife and 12 children needed to move because his rental agreement was terminated by the owner who wanted to reoccupy the home. But he was having a lot of difficulty finding a new house. When he said, he had 12 children no one would rent a home to him because they felt that the children would destroy the house. He couldn't say he had no children because he couldn't lie. We all know lawyers cannot and do not lie. So, he sent his wife for a walk to the cemetery with their other 11 children and took the remaining one with him to see rental homes with the real estate agent. He loved one of the homes and the price was right, the agent asked: "How many children do you have? He answered: "Twelve". The agent asked, "Where are the others?" The lawyer, with his best courtroom sad look answered, “They're in the cemetery with their mother. MORAL: It's not necessary to lie; one only has to choose the right words… And don't forget, most politicians are unfortunately lawyers…..
