In 1976 the Rotary International Board of Directors took the initiative, to create one sentence definition of Rotary, and after numerous drafts, the definition accepted was: "Rotary is an organization of business and professional person united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.” Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, "What is a Rotary club?”

President’s Desk Season’s Greetings!!! We had some relief from the pandemic and hence the festive period of September to November was full of activity. Thankfully, we never faced the 3rd wave, despite the festive season and one can attribute it to the large-scale vaccination, which is yet to reach the desired levels. We pray that there is no other wave and life gets back to normal soon. Low levels of Covid and some relaxations, also helped our club to conduct various outdoor activities. All our club meetings have been Offline since August and it was heartening to meet many members after a long time. There were many programmes conducted during this period by our Director’s and the most significant one was the addition of 16 new members at special event at the hands of DG and senior District officials. This is in line with RI President’s and our DG’s thrust and priority. Kudos to Director Membership, Rtn. Swatantra Kumar and all the other members who referred new members and spent so much time with every new prospective member. We conducted many more programmes and few of them are stated below:• •

Very successful TRF meet in the presence of Chief Coordinator – Rtn. Kamlesh Kharande, where we honoured all the TRF contributors of last 20 years. Referred 2 free Cataract operation and one Paediatric surgery.
Our members have been missing Fellowship programmes and hence with the improved conditions, we had an excellent Picnic at Gorai and Diwali Night with a Fashion Show by members, having an attendance of almost fifty members and their families. It was a great bonding event, particularly between old and new members. We also had few of our members attend club meetings of other Rotary Club as ambassadors of our Club. Our PP Deepa Goenka attended the meeting of RC of London and Rtn.Swatantra Kumar attended at meeting of RC of Ranchi. Our PP Raj Verma was honoured with Jharkhand Vibhuti Samman at the hand of Ex-Chief Minister, Mr. Babulal Marandi for his contribution to enrich Jharkhand and India with his specialised skills. We congratulate PP Raj Verma for this recognition and wish him many more. With the improving situation, we plan to enhance our activities with many more projects and wish the BODs and all the members all the very best.

Dream to be the Change Let's do more!! In the warp & weft of my life, an important thread is Rotary. I actually discovered Rotary a little late and since then, it has been among the best aspects. As Rotarians we have a unique opportunity to improve lives among communities. We are professionals from various backgrounds who share a common goal of service above self.

Editor’s Desk
Shine On! My experience with Rotary started last year during Covid times, and first in person interaction was during the Diwali party, which was a fellowship at its best, probably seeds of some great friendships to be formed were sowed, and it will surely become into a fruitful tree of friendship with very strong roots committed to collective goodness. I am sure this is the exact thought which my fellow new members will have. Due to a family emergency, I could not be the part of the first Horizon edition, which was beautifully executed by my fellow team members, for which I am so thankful. The year began with uncertainty, confusion, and ambiguity of the future is slowly clearing and its dark clouds to reveal in us a sense of gratitude and boundless love and appreciation for those who have gotten us through it all. These challenging times from last year have taught all of us one thing, that our actions big or small have a global impact. Festivals always fascinated me from childhood, and festivities, smiles, happiness across the spectrum of societies always exudes positivity. In this connected world, how can any celebration or joy be complete without sharing. RCBK shared joy, sweets, time, health, blood, and a pledge for organs with the community. The need for compassionate people has never been greater than now, and all our actions big or small, be it by monetary, man-hours, or ideas together we all can and will make a difference – Towards a better world for our children. So let’s all Shine on with Collective Goodness.

15 November, 2021
Before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the blood requirement of Mumbai was 1,000 units per day. The possibility of an outbreak of the third wave of Covid-19 is creating panic among Mumbaikars. Owing to the significant decrease in the number of blood donors during the lockdown, there is currently a huge shortage of blood in Mumbai.
Mumbai has had the lowest blood supply in recent times. there was a 60% drop in blood donation during the first wave of the Covid19 outbreak. Right now, there is a 25% shortage.
Tata Memorial Hospital, a pioneering establishment in cancer treatment issued an important appeal to organizations and housing societies to hold blood donation camps to fight shortage reported the Times of India.

BUZZES BACK TO LIFE AFTER 18 MONTHS Chinchapada, SNGP th
15 November 2021
Mumbai is a complex paradox. Nowhere else in the world do 20 million people share a city with tribals or indigenous people living side-by-side with m o d e r n s k y s c ra p e r s a n d malls. No other city could boast of a fifth of its land being a dense green National Park.
It is surreal.
Rotary Club of Bombay Kandivli
Tribals living in the Chinchpada area in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), were on a receiving end during the COVID-19 pandemic, due closure of the Rotary Medical Health Centre (Homeopathy) at Chinchpada. Due to COVID-19 related guidelines, it was difficult to operate. After 18 months, and efforts of RCBK highly committed members, like Rtn Ramesh Chandra, under the guidance of IPP Vermaji and ever-smiling Rotarian family of Dr. Nita, Rtn Guru and their equally committed would be Dr. Rituja, along with President SB Prasad, the medical center was started on 15 t h November 2021. What better day to start the Medical Center again as it marked the birth anniversary of the great tribal leader and freedom fighter, Shri Birsa Munda. RCBK appointed Dr. Yadav, and the center would operate 2 days a month. This clinic was a lifeline to the tribal villagers, and the joy on the face of villagers was palpable, as they attended the reopening ceremony along with their local leader Devendra Thakur, who is the Chairman of Birsa Munda Association. RCBK members and tribals enjoyed the celebrations by sharing joy and snacks.

OLD AGE HOME VISIT Always Deeply Impacts Us 5th - 6th October Elders are a part of the society and RCBK members takes every opportunity to visit them and spend time with them. On 5th and 6th October RCBK visited 2 Old Age Homes - Vishramghar Old Age Home at Aksa, near Malad and Radhika Old age home in Uthan, 15 kms beyond Bhayandar. It was quite a touching experience. The institution picked most inmates from the streets and police stations who have no one to take care. More than 100 elderlies benefitted and RCBK is evaluating a possibility of adopting some of them, also plans to get associated with many such old age homes. President SB Prasad, IPP Jyoti Gandhi, Rtn Modiji, Secretary Sadhana along with others spend their time with Elders, distributed clothes, snacks. Despite the problems they might have been facing, the smile on their faces is a motivation to all of us.

Poem on
ROTARY WAY OF
Where there is darkness, Rotary shares light. Where there is loneliness, Rotary shares love. Where there is illiteracy, Rotary shares education. Where there is ignorance, Rotary shares knowledge. Where there are problems, Rotary shares solutions. Where there is enmity, Rotary shares friendship. Where there are unearthed talents, Rotary shares opportunities. Where there are needs, Rotary shares new horizons of living. Where there is a tear, Rotary shares smiles. Where there is a distance, Rotary shares the miles. Where there is pain, Rotary shares the agony. Where there is gain, Rotary shares the joy. Where there are achievers, Rotary shares the compliments. Where there are failures, Rotary shares success supplements. Where there are orphans, Rotary shares the family. Where there are elders, Rotary shares time. Where there is childhood, Rotary shares values of life. Where there is youth, Rotary shares the ladder of leadership. Where there is unemployment, Rotary shares career choices. Where there is lack of awareness, Rotary shares vocational training. Where there is despair, Rotary shares hope. Where there is depression, Rotary shares inspiration. Where there is weakness, Rotary shares strength. When there is chaos, Rotary shares harmony. Where there is illness, Rotary shares curing. Where there are disabilities, Rotary share's ability. Where there are contingencies, Rotary shares might. Where there is poverty, Rotary shares ways to wealth. Where there is nothing, Rotary shares something. Where there is everything, Rotary sources it and shares it with those who have nothing. This beautiful poem was written by Mrs. Jayanthi Raja Sreenivasan during the year 2007 when the theme was Rotary Shares. It was published in Rotary News too. On the day of the festival of lights — Diwali — one prefers to celebrate with family and friends, but RCBK team led by Rtn. Kalpana, IPP Jyoti and Rtn. Modiji, decided to spend Diwali and spread joy with financially and socially deprived women of a small village Dongaste in Vada – Thane. Starting early morning after 3 hours' drive from home they reached the village and distributed 30 sarees and sweet boxes, in a programme conducted in association with Shri Krishna Upasana Centre.

EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES Inspiring Youth with Science in Space The development of a country depends mainly upon the progress and health of the society. In last many years the young school students of the country have expressed their desire to know more about the basics of Space, Applications of various Satellites, designing and launching their own school satellite. RCBK joined hands with Soch Sayani, to host along with others and Indian Space Industry Exhibitors for the first virtual conference for the young s c h o o l s t u d e n t s , w h e r e I S RO ' s eminent scientists were invited to address, teach students across the globe.
3-day "Virtual Conference on Space S c i e n c e a n d Te c h n o l o g y " w a s attended by almost 600+ students from 16 states of India and a few international students from Australia, the UK, Qatar, Dubai joined. Students also gained an understanding of the true nature of science and in-depth knowledge of scientific concepts, laws, and theories. The programs helped them develop interests, attitudes, and “habits of mind” related to science and mathematics.
Few students from standard 6th to 12th also presented very interesting talks on Robotics, futuristic possibilities of life in space or commercialization of Space, etc. The knowledge of these young students on Space and their presentation ability were highly appreciated. Prizes of the Paintings competition were announced, and the paintings showed the super imaginative minds of the young students (even from Class 1) as they depicted Space and the function of satellite in a very artistic way.
President SB Prasad gave a talk on Rotary and its role in service to society at the concluding session of the conference as one of the Panelists. They were quite appreciative of RCBKs contribution to the webinar. President appreciated and congratulated Rtn. Bandana for coordinating with all concerned so diligently and supported by Rtn. GIFT OF SIGHT
When you give someone the gift of sight, you're not just helping one person to see again: you're supporting an entire community. When one person regains sight, the rest of that person's family can concentrate on work, school, improving their home lives, and helping others in need.
25th October and 3rd November RCBK on recommendation of IPP Jyoti Gandhi recommended Cataract Surgery to be conducted at LM Hospital, for Mr Dharade, a driver with Shyamnarayan School and another needy person.

ORGAN DONATION Awareness Not many Rotarians may be aware that India ranks second to the United States in doing the largest number of transplants in the world. However, there remains a huge gap between those requiring transplant surgery in India and those who get it. And this is mainly due to lack of awareness, ignorance, and access to appropriate organ donors and proper medical facilities. India’s organ donation is an estimated 0.65 per million population, and there is a crying need to promote awareness on voluntary pledge to donate organs. The government has set up the Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation at the national, zonal and regional levels to address this issue. RCBK has always been actively working to raise awareness and simplify the process of organ donation, and also increase awareness about the need to donate to help people. We have to educate our local communities that the process of pledging to donate is quite simple.

Organ Donation Awareness Webinar: This webinar was jointly hosted by two clubs RCMKW and RCBK, starting with the first talk was by Dr. Girish Trivedi eye donation on introduced by Eye specialist Dr. Neeta Dodwal (RCBK) in a very soothing tone. His talk was followed by two small video clips, one by BK Shivani of Brahmakumari whose convincing power in a simple language always motivates people, and one more clip of a silent video was having very appeal in an emotional way. Next speaker was Dr. Rajesh Himmatramka, very dynamic Orthopaedic surgeon. He was introduced by our Club Director on Organ Donation Rtn. Tribhuvan Kapdi (RCBK). He covered everything on organ donation in a very methodical system. People got educated on the subject for natural death, accidental brain death, living
organ donation and all ifs and buts were covered. His talk was followed by a concluding video clip (RCMKW) on Mohan foundation doing excellent work in this field. Two video clips on national burn centre and one on Rotary organ donation awareness were also showcased (RCMKW). Next was Dr Sunil Keswani introduced by our Club Secretary Rtn. Dr. Sadhana Edvankar (RCBK) in a very gentle manner. Dr. Keswani, master of plastic surgery and Director of National Burn Centre (Skin Bank) his speech on the techniques and all legal issues before donation was full of important knowledge for all.
