AUTUMN DESIGNS 1984
by Matthew Hadley @dollsabouttown

These uncatalogued 'Boutique' pieces from the early eighties are a collectors must-have, says Matthew Hadley @dollabouttown "Remember 1984, readers? Sipping on a delicious 'Quatro' fizzy fruit drink as Bananarama's 'Robert De Niro's Waiting' drifted in from the radio cassette player! 1984 was a good year for Sindy too! Read on as I give you an in-depth take on 'Autumn Designs'. These were six uncatalogued outfits launched during August of that year. They were a total surprise, no fanfare, they just appeared in toy shops during the school holidays. They were part of the 'Boutique' range - of which there had already been 12 fashions released that year. I absolutely adore these sets and have managed to slowly collect them all over the years. I love how accurate they are in terms of 1980's young fashion. The details are great, the use of 'real' fabrics, and the colourful, fun trendy designs. Let's take a look..."

A look at Autumn Designs
Autumn Designs (43035) "The ultimate '80s tracksuit. This cute set features a sweatshirt in grey jersey with a pastel pink and blue stripe, pale pink stretch-towelling sleeves cut in a gentle batwing shape, trimmed with three white 'real' buttons and a pink headband. Matching jogging bottoms were worn, along with powder blue legwarmers and white trainers. The blue leg warmers are cut slightly wider than Sindy's leg to accommodate the towelling fabric - which is quite thick. This outfit is so of its time, the stripe and grey marl fabric used was similar to millions of tshirts that were on sale around that time. Pastels were also big news in the mid 1980's. I love the button details - which makes this my favourite ever 'sporty' outfit from Sindy's vast wardrobe.'
@DOLLSABOUTTOWN
Autumn Designs (43036) 'Edwardiana meets '80s in this nautical ensemble - a cotton striped dress with a drop waist, crisp white cotton sailor style collar, a blue bow at the neck, and long sleeves with matching cuffs. These shorter drop-waist dresses were all the rage in young fashion at the time, and the sailor collar was also popular (the late Princess Diana wore them a lot). Influence came from the New Romantics, Edwardiana and Victoriana (think of all those blouses with puff selves and high collars), and this set to me, although contemporary at the time, has an air of the sailor suits worn in those times, think The Railway Children, and especially with the hat - a slightly oversized floppy beret in blue with a contrasting white band and cute bobble."
@DOLLSABOUTTOWN
Autumn Designs (43037) "Here we have a simple no-nonsense, two-piece suit in a gorgeous shade of plum, and a golden yellow top and matching tassel shoes. The suit featured straight legged, cropped 3/4 trousers, and a short waist length jacket with long sleeves and a 'wrap-over' neckline. The jacket is beautifully made - the stitched edge is beautifully done and the neckline is a lovely curved shape. Sadly, the fabric frays terribly, so can be hard to find these days without needing some repair work. The top is a simple tee shape with a round neck. I love this outfit for its pure simplicity, and the colour is divine."
@DOLLSABOUTTOWN
Autumn Designs (43038) "This charming day dress in jade green cotton with a crisp white trim echoes, again, many of the late Princess Diana's dress styles of the time; This dress features an integral white drop-waistband, short simple sleeves, and two deep pleats in the front, with the straight cut skirt finishing just at the knee. Sindy carried a white crochet style tote bag and wore classic white mules. Nice and simple - this chic ensemble looks adorable on Sindy"
@DOLLSABOUTTOWN
Autumn Designs (43039) 'A classic looking sweatshirt and jeans combo from the 1980's. A baggy style white sweatshirt with an orange and yellow graphic print - placed on the front bodice panel only - that is actually made in 'real' sweatshirt fabric and features a ribbed waistband and ribbed cuffs - just like the real thing. Teamed with trendy dark cropped denim jeans, they feature a deep turn-up and red-top stitch detailing. The detail is just amazing - there's even real functional back pockets (these jeans are often mistaken for the ones worn by "Beach Party Sindy' from the same year but, those are tapered with no turn-up.) This outfit also included cool socks and some yellow trainers! Overall a fantastic amount of value and detail, and a super fun, casual and trendy look for Sindy.'
@DOLLSABOUTTOWN
Autumn Designs (43040) 'This one seems to be a favourite with collectors - and rightly so! A red jersey 'cutway' top with a high neck, a red plastic 'Alice' band, and a full 1950s style circular skirt with an oversized graphic floral print. There was a '50s trend happening in the early eighties - bands like The Stray Cats and Shakin' Stevens were huge, and jiving and rockabilly was popular once more. Sindy had a couple of other outfits that reflected this trend - 'Jumpin' Jive' and 'Party Time", also both released in 1984. The modern print used on this skirt prevented it from looking vintage, and was very on-trend at the time. I remember Tracey Ullman singing 'They Don't Know' on 'Top of the Pops' in 1983 wearing a pink glittery top identical to this red one. One of my personal favourites and a fabulously youthful and vibrant outfit.'

MAM'SELLE GIVEAWAY WINNER @PEDIGREE.SINDY
We had such a huge response to the giveaway to win a handmade 'Marilyn' inspired cardigan as featured in the August 2022 issue of Mam'selle it was really hard to pick a winner!
And the winner is... @pedigree.sindy. Both @dresslikeasindy and @action_mans_nan adored her modern take on vintage knitwear. See her entry below.
Vintage knits... ...often get a bad wrap. Be it the colours, designs, or patterns. Often they were made by crafty mothers, grandmothers and aunties as a cost effective and creative way to extend childhood dolly wardrobes. But, with a little modern styling they can look just as cool today, as well as being totally eco conscious.

BY @STYLEMYSINDY
DEAR SINDY...
before Jane from @stylemysindy shows us how to up-cycle a broken oil lamp to create not one, but two new accessories for your home. Jane told us the shade was glued to the base and all the lighting components had been removed so the lamp would never work. To up-cycle the shade: Use a Bottle Top Light that will act as a new lamp base and lighting - clever right? Pull the string of lights all the way through the shade and out of the top of the shade to begin with. The battery section of the light should fit snugly into the base of the lamp - add some glue if yours doesn't. Then push the light back through into the shade to fit inside. Cover the new base and edge of the shade with double-side tape, before winding around string or twine to cover. Add some glue in areas to get the string to cover tightly - so you can't see the base. Switch on and enjoy the retro lighting effect. To up-cycle the base: Cut the top part from the lamp base and sand to smooth edges. Paint with a couple of coats of Gesso. (Gesso is similar to white acrylic paint, only thinner. It dries hard, making the surface more stiff. It helps prepare or prime the surface for painting.) Once dry age base with some watercolour paint and fill with mini paper or fake flowers.

FLORENCE, ITALY
A city in central Italy and the capital city of the Tuscany region, Florence or Firenze to the locals is a must visit. Noted for its culture, Renaissance art and architecture and monuments, Florence is also home to numerous museums and art galleries, such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Pitti. One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracottatiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto.

WALKING THE DOG 1993 Walking the Dog (18278) was a fashion collection of 'dog' themed outdoor coats, leggings, accessories and footwear. This quartet of brightly coloured outfits came in a window box pack and were released by Hasbro. The dog shown above - a West Highland Terrier - is called GoGo. He was released the same year as part of a 'Sindy & GoGo' boxed doll set which retailed for £16.75. GoGo only walks when Sindy is holding the lead (and with some battery operated movement of course!).
