चला गणपती बा पा या पाया पडू आ ण बा पाचे वागत क !

ा अंकाचा वषय आ ही “को वड या छायेत” असा नवडायचा अवकाश, तु ही आ हाला भरगोस तसाद दलात! सव वयोगटातील ीपु षांनी, लहान मुलांनी क वता, लेख, गो ी, च ,े पाककृती, इ याद , आ हाला लगेच पाठवले. ा अंकात आ ही “ कड् स कॉनर” नावाचे सदर पुन ी वत करीत आहोत. आप या छो ा मुलामुल नी को वड काळात कती व वध उप म हाती घेतले आहेत हे बघून कौतुक वाटते. तु हाला हा अंक कसा वाटला हे आ हाला न क ल न कळवा. मी आ ण वषाताई माग या वष , ऋजुता व सदानंद पाथरे यां या घरी गेलो असता आ हाला हतगुजचे बरेच जुने अंक बघ याचा योग आला. या को वड या काळात जसा जसा वेळ मळे ल तसे तसे आ ही दोघ नी ा जु या अंकांना कॅन क न ड जटल बनवले आहे. ये या स टबर ते नो हबर यादर यान दर आठव ाला यातले काही अंक आ ही पुनः का शत करणार आहोत. So stay tuned for that! हे अंक वाचताना १९८९ ते २००० या बारा वषात मराठ मंडळ व मराठ कुटुं बांचा मनेसोटा मधील इ तहास काय होता याचे यंतर येते. सु वातीला काही वष हे अंक हाताने ल न च त केले गेले होते. यासाठ ब याच लोकांनी यात कतीतरी वेळ व प र म घातले होते हे आप या ल ात येते. याकाळ मराठ कुटुं बे मोजक च होती, यामुळे यां याम ये खूप जवळ क होती व बरीच दे वाणघेवाण होत असे. कुठलेही नवीन मराठ कुटुं ब आले कवा इथून सरीकडे लांत रत झाले तर याची बातमी हतगुज म ये यायची. याच बरोबर सद यांना झाले या अप या या ब ल जाहीर नवेदन, कुणा या नधना या बात या व आदरांजली दे णारे लेख व क वता, मुलां या कवा अगद मो ां या सु ा यश कवा क त या बात या आ ण याच बरोबर सण-वार याचे कॅलडर, मंडळा या सद यांची नावे, प े, फोन नंबर असे बरेच काही यात छापले जायचे. लेख, गो ी, क वता सु ा खूपच मनोरंजक आ ण मा हतीपर असाय या. हे जुने अंक तुम यापयत आण यासाठ आ ण आप या पुढ या प ांसाठ आपण मराठ मंडळा या वेबसाईटवर सं हीत क न ठे वणार आहोत. वेळात वेळ काढू न तु ही ते न क वाचाल असी आशा करते. याचबरोबर डसबर २०२० म ये मराठ मंडळाची क मट तसेच हतगुजची संपादक य ट म बदलते आहे. हतगुजसाठ पुढ या दोन वषासाठ दोन नवीन संपादकांची गरज आहे. तु हाला जर या कामाची आवड असेल तर आ हाला न क कळवा. आमचा ई-मेल आहे mamn.hitguj@gmail.com #MaskupMN #StayIndoorsStaySafe #WeAreMAM आपली नेहां कत , सायली अमरापूरकर-जहा गरदार

संपादक य नम कार मंडळ , ारंभी वनती क गणप त व ादयासागरा l अ ान व ह न बु मती दे आरा य मोरे वरा ll चता, लेश, दा र य, खः ह न दे शांतरा पाठवी l हेरंबा, गणनायका, गजमुखा भ ब तोषवी ll सणांचा म हना, सकारा मक ऊजा नमाण करणारा म हना हणजे - ावण! ा म ह यातील येक दवसाचे एक -एक वै श आ ण आपण सव ते साजरे कर यात इतके रमून जातो क म हना कसा संपतो कळतच नाही. शवामूठ, मंगळागौरी, जवतीचे पूजन, नागपंचमी, नारळ पौ णमा, र ाबंधन, कृ णा मी, गोपाळकाला असे सण साजरे करताकरता पठोरी अमाव या कधी येते समजतच नाही. आता चारच दवसात गणपती बा पा येणार हणून या या वागताची तयारी कर यात घरात अ धकच आनंदमयी, स वातावरण तयार होते. सावज नक व पाचा हा उ सव स या या ा महामारी या काळात जगातील वेगवेग या दे शात जरा वेग याच त हेन,े पण दरवष याच उ साहाने कसा साजरा केला जाणार आहे ाची व वधता पहायला, ऐकायला मी फारच उ सुक आहे. ा अंकात आ हाला लेखकांकडू न खूप चांगला तसाद मळाला. याब ल मनःपूवक ध यवाद! काही लेख तर भारतातूनही आलेले आहेत. बालकलाकारांनीही को वड या काळात केले या उप मांब ल मा हती दे ऊन ‘ कड् स कॉनरची’ शोभा वाढवली आहे. ही एक अ भमाना द बाब आहे!

Well done kids, keep it up! तसेच दरवष माणे यंदाही आप या मराठ मंडळा या कुटुं बातील अनेक मुलं बारावीची परी ा उ म र या उ ीण होऊन उ श णा या मागावर लागली आहेत. अ या ब याच युवक-युवत ब ल मा हती पण तु हाला ा अंकात वाचायला मळे ल. ा सव गुणी व या याचे हतगुज तफ मनःपूवक अ भनंदन आ ण पुढ ल श णाकरता खूप-खूप शुभे ा! सव वजयी भवेत! टाळे बंद या ा काळात साजरे झालेले सण, ल न, मुंज आ ण इतर अनेक काय म आपण सवानी फोन, ट ही, संगणक ा मा यमातुन अनुभवलेच असतील, त याच काही खास काय मांची संकेत ळे आ ही येथे ‘ई-मनोरंजन क ा’ वभागात समा व केलेली आहेत. आमची आशा आहे क वाचकांना ही करमणूक आवडेल! अंजलीने रेखाटले या मुखपृ ावरील सुंदर तैल च ांनी अंकाची शोभा वाढवली आहे. सायली बरोबर सहसंपादन केलेला आमचा हा हतगुजाचा अंक तु हाला सवाना आवडेल अशी अपे ा करते. को वड या काळात आप याला बरंच काही शकायला मळतंय. सा या जीवनशैलीचे मह व, व तेचे मह व, कमी पैशातही आनंदाने कसे राहता येऊ शकते, तसेच नसग आ ण पयावरणाचे मह व, इ याद . ा महामारी या काळात एका गो ीब ल मी खूप गंभीरपणे वचार केला. ती गो हणजे आपण जे दै नं दन नणय घेत असतो ते शा ीय ानावर आधारलेले आहेत का? आ ण आप या कृत चा नसगावर काय बरं परीणाम होतो? ा संदभात मी आपण रोज यारोज नमाण करणा या “ वयंपाक घरातील कचरा”, अथवा कंपो ट, ा वषयावर ल क त करायचे ठरवले आहे. बरीच वष मी कचरा आठव ातून एक दवस नयमाने ाइ हवे वर नेऊन ठे वत असे आ ण नंतर या कच याब ल वस न जात असे. पण आता मी ठरवलंय क कंपो ट करता येणारा कचरा इतर कच याबरोबर टाक याऐवजी याचे कंपो टग करायचं. मला वतः कंपो ट कर याची ना ताकद आहे कवा याकरता लागणारे मोठे मोठे क ांनी भरलेले डबे घरात बाळग याची इ ा (माझा इकॉलॉ ज ट मुलगा हे सगळं ४ वषापासून करतोय). मग मी मा या शहरात असले या कंपो टग उप मा वषयी संशोधन क न मा हती मळवली आ ण आज म हना झाला मी आता कंपो ट करायला सु वात केली आहे. आपण काहीतरी चांगली गो सु के याचे एक समाधान मनाला मळालंय. यांना श य असेल यांनी आपाप या शहरात असले या कंपो टग सोयीचा लाभ ज र यावा असं मला वाटते. ll गणपती बा पा मोरया ll आपली नेहां कत, वषा कांडलीकर

हगन मोदक वषा कांडलीकर आजकाल ब याच जणांकडू न मी हगन डाएट ब ल तसेच ‘ लुटन’ ऍलज , लॅकटोझ इंटॉलर स ब ल बोलताना ऐकलंय. अ या सव म मै ण साठ खास अगद सहजतेने बनवता येतील असे हे मोदक! सा ह य: २ १/२ कप बदाम पीठ १ कप साखर १/२ कप पाणी केशर - अंदाजे वेलची पूड - अंदाजे नारळा या तेलाचा हात फरवुन ठे वलेला छो ा मोदकाचा साचा कृती: थम पा यात साखर आ ण केशर घालून उकळत ठे वावे. ा पा याचा साधारण २ तारी पाक बनला (साखर पाणी म ण थोडं घ झालं) क व तव बंद करावा आ ण तयार झाले या पाकात बदामाचे पीठ आ ण वेलची पूड घालून म ण चांगले एकजीव करावे. लगेचच, गरम असतानाच, सा यात घालून मोदक बनवावे. ट प: १. मोदक साचा नसेल तर थोडे म ण हातात घेऊन पे ाचा आकार दे ऊन पेढे बनवावेत अथवा तयार झालेले म ण नारळा या तेलाचा हात फरवून घेतले या ताटात पसरवून नंतर याचे चौकोनी काप क न बदाम कतली बनवावी. २. तयार म णात खा याचे रंग (ए डबल रंग) वाप न रंगीबेरंगी मोदकही बनावता येतात.

Aditi Akolkar High School Attended: Eden Prairie High School This fall Aditi will be attending The Ohio State University to study psychology. Outside of school Aditi has been volunteering at libraries and hospitals for which she has won presidential award for communityservice. Aditi started figure skating at age 4 and ever since it has become part of her life; from performing at the annual EP Ice show to various competitions, she has thoroughly enjoyed skating.

Her hobbies include art, listening to music, and calligraphy.

Arul Belhe High School Attended: Wayzata High School.

Since Elementary School, Arul has been participating & winning at national level in National History Bee, National Geography Bee, Continental Math League & Quiz Bowl. He actively participated in Model United Nations & Youth in Government programs.

He enjoyed learning piano for 10 years and was on YMCA’s Swim Team setting regional records in two categories and had been in 2nd place in Table Tennis at state level High School championship.

Throughout high school, he kept himself busy doing summer internships at Metamodix, Inc. and working part-time as Cashier & Instructor. After being selected as a National Merit Semifinalist and getting a perfect score on ACT, he is now joining Stonybrook University, New York this Fall majoring in Mathematics & minoring in Computer Science on a full 4 years’ Provostial Scholarship.

Arul fondly remembers his years playing basketball with other boys in gymnasium during various MAM events and participating in a couple of cultural programs.

Aniruddha Paranjape High School Attended: Shakopee High School Hello, I am Aniruddha Paranjape, an honors graduate from Shakopee High School. During my high school career, I was very active in Speech, Music (Piano and Flute), and was very proficient academically, earning many achievements, such as The President’s Award, and multiple All - Academic and Academic Letter Placements. I will now attend the University of Minnesota: Twin Cities Campus to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering.

Rohan Sastri High School Attended: Shakopee High School My senior year, along with everyone else graduating in these trying times, was an odd one. Navigating school work and finding out how to maintain social relationships were no easy tasks, especially when both of those things were in stark contrast to the goals of maintaining public health during a pandemic. With that being said, I got the opportunity to do a lot before everything shut down, and this year was certainly one to remember. I performed a senior solo for my school’s band, participated in the University of Minnesota honor band on a secondary instrument, and found new friends who supported me throughout it all.

And to all the seniors that feel their accomplishments were cut short by the pandemic, graduation is graduation, virtual or in person. Looking forward, I am attending the University of Washington in Seattle this fall with an intended major of Applied Physics. No matter how challenging, I know that my high school experiences have given me the resilience and perseverance to keep moving forward.

Vaibhav Shirole High School Attended : Shakopee High School Vaibhav will be attending the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He is planning on pursuing Computer Engineering and aspires to work with robots and other machines that help push forward technological innovations. He is thankful that he was able to work with automated systems at Shakopee High School which ignited his interest for pursuing this as his goal in the future.

एक वेगळ आठवण मु धा हळबे शु वारी रा ी झोपताना ई-मेल वाचला : "sad news that our dear friend Mr. Pradip Kamble unexpectedly passed away" आ ण णात कांबळे काकांचा मतहा य वसावलेला चेहरा मा या डो यासमोर आला, आ ण कांबळे काकांची आ ण शैला काकूंची मराठ मंडळात या काय मातली अलीकडची भेट आठवली. ब दा दवाळ तली भेट होती ती! न या-पांढ या रंगां या प ट्या असलेला शट, लॅक- े पॅ ट, हातात ट ल चा प ा असलेलं थोडंसं ओघळतं घ ाळ, एक हात पॅ ट या खशात, व काळे -पांढरे म स केस या काळसर-साव या रंगा या चेह यावर उठू न दसत होते. शेजारी शैला काकू नेहमी माणे घडी केलेली शाल हातावर टाकून उ या हो या. काका नेहमी माणे हणाले, “काय हणतेस मु धा?” खूप जा त असे कधी आ ही बोललो नाही. मी यांना प ह यांदा २००९-२०१० म ये अनघा दे शमुख कडे भेटले होते. तची आ ण माझी पण तशी फार जा त ओळख न हती, पण एका सं याकाळ तने यां या बरोबर आ हालाही जेवायला बोलावले होते. यानंतर मी कांबळे काका आ ण काकूंना मराठ मंडळा या काय मात भेटत रा हले. मी नेहमी काही ना काही काय मात भाग घेत अस यामुळे, टे जवर पोहच या या आ ण तयारी कर या या घाईत असते. शांतपणा मा या वभावातच नाही! पण जे हा जे हा कांबळे काका समोर आले, ते हा ते हा शांत वरात, चेह यावर तेच मतहा य ठे ऊन, काका मला वचारत - “मु धा काय हणतेस?” आ ण माझा काय मात भाग असेल तर आवजून "छान झाला हं ो ाम!" असं सांगत. ते गेले या या स या दवशी एका म ाचा मेसेज आला, क कोण ग द प कांबळे ? मी याला पाठ् व यासाठ मराठ मंडळाचे आ ही काढलेले गे या ५-६ वषातले सगळे फोटो धुंडाळले, पण कांबळे काकांचा फोटो या फोटोत सापडला नाही. मग मी याला फोन क न यांचं स व तर वणन केलं आ ण कांबळे काका या या डो या समोर उभे केले. वगातून काका ते ऐकत असतील, तेच मतहा य चेह यावर ठे वून, पण या वेळ मला काय हणतेस वचाराय या ऐवजी मी काय वणन करते आहे ते ऐकत असतील. माझा आ ण यांचा खूप जा ती प रचय हो याचा कवा वाढ याचा अवसर आला नाही, पण जे हा जे हा मराठ मंडळात जाईन ते हा कांबळे काकांची न क आठवण येईल, आ ण पटकन तो मतहासी चेहरा आठवण या गद तून वाट काढत डो यासमोर तरळे ल आ ण “काय हणतेस मु धा, ो ाम छान झाला हं!” ही वा य कानात घुमतील.

को वड या छायेत को वड काळात जोपासलेला नवा छं द मंजुषा सावंत हा फोटो सडर वॅ स वग (Cedar Waxwing) चा...मी आतापयत काढले या फोट मधील माझा आवडता फोटो. तसे मी काढलेले सगळे च फोटो मला आवडतात! नसग आ ण व यजीव छाया च णाशी (Nature and Wildlife Photography) माझी ह लीच ओळख होतेय. को वड-१९ या काळात लागलेला हा छं द. या छं दाचं यासात कधी पांतर झालं ते माझंच मला कळलं नाही. माच-२०२० म ये को वडची छाया सग या जगावर पडली आ ण हळू हळू सगळं ठ प झालं असं हणता येईल. घराबाहेर पडायचं नाही, कोणाला भेटायचं नाही. सगळं आयु यच online - कराणा आण यापासून ते वाढ दवस साजरा कर यापयत सगळं च. मा या गीतमंजुषा ा छं दाचं अखंड काम चालू असतं, यामुळे मा या दन मात तसा काही फार फरक पडला न हता. आयु य नेहमी माणे नेहमी याच गतीने चालू होतं. म ये म ये गंमत हणून मै ण नी पाठवलेली online challenges चालू होती - अगद साडी, नथ पासून व वध video challenges क न झाली. पण कती दवस वतःला घरात क डू न घेणार, थोडं घराबाहेर पडणं पण आव यक होतं. वतः या मान सक आ ण शारी रक वा ासाठ मोक या हवेत शरीराची हालचाल होणं गरजेचं होतं.

माच ते मे म ह यात सगळे च थोडे भांबावले होतो. यूयॉक, इटली या बात या आ ण आकडे बघून काळजी वाटायची. भारतातून काळजीचे, आपुलक चे फोन यायचे. सुदैवाने इतर दे शात जसा पूण lockdown झाला तसा इथे म नसोटा म ये झाला नाही. Social Distancing पाळणे श य असेल तर सायक लग, चाल या/ धाव यासाठ बाहेर जा यास परवानगी होती . आ ही (मी आ ण उमेश) सं याकाळ घरा या आसपास बाहेर फरायला जायचो, पण 'stay at home ' चा काळ जसा वाढू लागला तसा घरी बसून कंटाळलेले बरेच जण सं याकाळ फर यासाठ बाहेर पडू लागले. यामुळे चालताना

यो य ते अंतर राखणं कठ ण होतं आ ण मा कचा वापर बंधनकारक न हता यामुळे कोणी जवळू न गेलं तरी मनात शंका यायची. मोकळं मैदान कवा अशी जागा जथे यो य ते अंतर राखता येईल अशी जागा शोधणं गरजेचं होतं. आ ही मग च रजनल पाक (French Regional Park, Plymouth) ला जायला सुरवात केली. घरापासून अंतर साधारण ५ मैल. सुरवातीला तेथेही गद कमी होती पण नंतर मा तलावा या आसपास गद वाढायला लागली. हेच न म झालं आ ण आ ही आत या पायवाटा (trails) चालायला आ ण नवीन पायवाटा शोधायला सुरवात केली. गद ची वेळ टाळ यासाठ अगद लवकर कवा उ शरा हणजे सूया ता या आधी थोडा वेळ असं जायला लागलो. या आत या पायवाटांनी एक नवं जग उलगडू न दाखवायला सुरवात केली. साधारण सूय दय कवा सूया ता या जवळपास अग णत प ी ा यांनी अव चत दशन ायला सुरवात केली - हरीण, कासव, आत या त याकडे कधी बदक, कधी हेरॉन दसायला लागले. हे सगळे इथेच होते, आ हीच या जगात नवीन होतो. या आधी कधी वतःचं जग सोडू न यां या जगात डोकावून पा हलंच न हतं. आम यासाठ जणू हे सरं जग अ त वातच न हतं, एवढे अन भ होतो. नसग आ ण याचं स दय कधी शांतपणे थांबून टपलंच न हतं. एकदा घरी परत येताना पाकम येच र ता ओलांडणारे कासव दसले, तर एकदा बराच वेळ पाकम ये थांबून काहीही न दस यामुळे नराश होऊन परत येताना तीन हरणं शांतपणे चरताना दसली आ ण आ ण यांनी फोटो साठ छानशी पोज ही दली. कधी सकाळ टक (turkey), वालो (tree swallow), बान वालो (barn swallow) असे प ी ही भेटले. घरात या डेक वर साधारण दोन वष झाली बड फ डर (Bird Feeder) आहे. तथे प ी येत होते पण आधी कधी फार अ यास केला न हता. रेड व ड लॅकबड (Red Winged Blackbird) आ ण चम या येतात एवढं च काय ते मा हत. यांना खा यासाठ एकच कारचं खा दे त होते. फार वचार न हता केला कधी. हळू हळू ल ात आलं, आणखी काही प ी येऊ शकतात. का डनल (Cardinal), लू जे ( Blue Jay), चकडी (Chickadee) अगद सुतार प ी (Woodpecker) सु ा. मग तो अ यास सु झाला. Hummingbirds साठ वेगळा फ डर आणला. घराबाहेर आ ण पाक म ये या सग यांचे फोटो काढतंच होते पण ल ात आलं क मोबाईलने हे जग नाही टपता येत. येक प ाची उड याची - बस याची प त, याचे रंग, यां या चोचीचा आकार, यां या अंगावरचे व वध पॅटन - असे बरेच बारकावे mobile phone ने नाही टपता येत. हणतात ना हौसेला मोल नसते - साधारण जून म ये मी नवीन ले स घे याचा नणय घेतला. आ ण मग सकाळ सं याकाळचा एक नयमच चालू झाला.. डेक वर येणा या प यांना बघ याचा, यांचे फोटो काढ याचा. फोटो आधीही काढत होते, पण गे या दड-दोन म ह यात माझा दन म पूण बदलून गेला. येक श नवार-र ववार नवीन पाक, न ा पायवाटा शोधायला लागलो. प यां या लांतराब ल मा हती मळवायला सुरवात केली. शेरबन (Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge) ब ल आधी ऐकून होते पण आता यांचं वषभराचं calendar बघून आमचा दन म ठरायला लागला. सकाळ सूय दया या आसपास प ी- ाणी कायरत असतात हणून साधारण सकाळ ५:३० ला नघून शेरबनला वेळेत पोहोच याचे काय म ठरायला लागले.

ा छं दाचं आता यासात पांतर झालं होतं. हा २-३ म ह याचा वास बरंच काही शकवून गेला. प यांचे फोटो काढताना बराच संयम असावा लागतो.

Portrait Photography करणं वेगळं कारण तु ही समोर या ला काय करायचं ते सांगू शकता आ ण ते ब याचदा ते तुमचं ऐकतात. इथे प यांना वतःचे फोटो काढू न घे यात काडीचा रस नसतो. ते आप याच जगात गुंग. इथे एकेका सेकंदाने माझे चांगले फोटो कलेले आहेत. मे ड सन लेकला घर ा घालणारा ग ड (Bald Eagle ) न वळ हात हलला आ ण मी फोटो गमावलाय. छोटे प ी तर फार व चत एका जागी थांबतात, यामुळे यांचे फोटो काढणं हे एक आ हानच असतं. But I'm enjoying this a lot. शेरबनला ४०-५० फूट उं ची या झाडावर असले या ग डा या ६-७ फूट उं च घर ाचा आ ण या या कुटुं बाचा फोटो पण असाच, काहीतरी भ , अ त पा ह याचा आनंद दे णारा; नसगासमोर खूप खुजे आहोत याची जाणीव क न दे णारा.

ग ड (Bald Eagle) छाया च : मंजुषा सावंत

माग या पानावरचा सडर वॅ स वग (Cedar Waxwing) चा फोटो, Murphy Hanrehan Park Reserve, Savage, मनेसोटा इथे काढलेला. हा माझा आवडता फोटो कारण यामागची गो . या दवशी सु ा ३.५ कलो वजनाची कॅमे याची बॅग घेऊन एक ते दड तास पायवाटा तुडवत होतो. एकही चटपाख नाही, फ घ गावणा या मा या आ ण घाम. खूप चड चड झाली होती. उं च झाडावरचा सुतार प ी ओझरतं दशन दे ऊन गेला. ब याच वेळानंतर एक आडर ता आ ण यापुढे तलाव दसला. एकदोन नाकतोडे दसले, यांचे फोटो काढले. एक बगळा (white egret) दसला, पण फोटो काढे पयत पळाला. एक कासव पा यात पडले या काठ वर कसरत करत चढत होते, पण आमची चा ल लागताच यानेही लगेच पा यात उडी मारली. हटलं थांबू थोडा वेळ आ ण फोटो काढ या शवाय परतायचं नाही हे न त. थोडं पुढे गेलो आ ण तथेच एका झाडावर अनेक प ी कल बलत होते. आ ही तथेच शांतपणे थांबलो, मग ल ात आलं क ते प ी तथेच घर ा घालत आहेत. ते यां याच घरी होते, यामुळे बनधा त असावेत. यांना आम या तथे अस याची बलकुल पवा न हती.

ब याच वेळानंतर मी मनसो फोटो काढले. घरी येऊन फोटो ए डट करेपयत या प यांचं नाव ही मला मा हत न हतं. घरी येऊन फोटो पा हले आ ण सग या मेहनतीचं चीज झा यासारखं वाटलं. येक फोटो असाच - आपले हेच जग न ाने आपणांस उलगडू न दाखवणारा. अजून खूप काही कॅमेराम ये टपायचं आहे. स टबर म ये शरद ऋतू चालू झाला क सुंदर रंग दसू लागतील. म नसोटा चा हवाळा या वेळ वेग या प तीने अनुभवता येईल.. As John Ruskin said, “Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty if only we have the eyes to see them.”

को वड या छायेत ...क हत क हत क गाणी हणत? सुनंदा अमरापूरकर पंत धान मोद नी लॉकडाऊनची घोषणा केली, ते हापासून आपण वजनवासात आहोत. लॉकडाऊन होताच शहरातले सगळे घरकामगार गावी नघून गेले. घरातली कामं करायची सवय कुणाला असते ह ली? शवाय वगी, झोमॅटो सगळं बंद. रे टारंट्स बंद. पैसे असूनही उपयोग काय? शेवट नाईलाजाने सगळे बे सकवर आले. दोन वेळा खायला तर पा हजेच ना? सुरवातीला थकणं, कंटाळणं, वैताग, भांडण सगळं सगळं झालं. हळू हळू जाणीव हायला लागली क ‘अरे! जमतंय क आप याला!’ शवाय मुलं आ ण आई-बाबा सगळे एक अस याने पळवाटा न ह या. मग काय, मळू न कामं सु झाली. याला जे आवडतं ते तो उचलू लागला. मदतीला ‘यू ूब’ आहेच. मग कळायला लागलं घर वतः व कर याचा, भांडी चकचक त घास याचा, अ शजव याचा आनंद वेगळाच! हा गमावलेला आनंद परत मळवू लागलो. कुणाला कुठं जायचंच नस यामुळे घाईघाईने आवरणं आ ण बाहेरची धावपळ नाही. पुरेशी झोप आ ण पुरेसा आराम! ना वास ना गद , ना षण! कामं झाली क , प याचे कवा कॅरमचे डाव खेळायला सुरवात झाली. आम यासारखी हातारी माणसं जु या आठवण चे रंग भ लागली. घरातली ब तेक कपाटं आव न झाली. फोट चे अ बम, जु या जपले या व तू, क वतां या व ा सगळं मनसो चाळू न झालं.जुने म -मै णी, नातेवाईकांशी फोनवर स व तर ग पा मा न झा या.धाक ा नातीबरोबर आपडी थापडीपासून भातुकलीपयत खेळणं आ ण रा ी गो चा रतीब रोज चालू आहे.

आम या ब गमधील सुर ा र क, यांची घरे इथे नाहीत, यां या जेवण आ ण चहाची जबाबदारी काही म हलांनी उचलली आहे. जे एकेकटे राहतात कवा वकलांग आहेत, यांनाही फोन क न लागेल ती मदत आ ही पोचवतो. माळ नस यामुळे रोपांना पाणी दे याचं काम लॅटधारक आळ पाळ ने करतात. असं समजूयात, क ही एक सग यांना संधीच मळाली आहे वतःला पारखून बघायची. आणखी एक, माणसांचा वावर नस यामुळे च क पोपट, बुलबुल, भार ाज खड यांशी येऊ लागलेत. शेवट जगायचं कसं? ‘क हत क हत क गाणी हणत?’ हे मह वाचं आहे आ ण ते आप याच हातात असतं...!

द माट ट डशवॉशर डॉ.शा वत शेरे लॉकडाऊन या आणखी एका दवसाची अखेर होत आली होती. आमचं साधंसं रा ीचं जेवण नुकतंच संपलं होतं आ ण मी कचन या सकजवळ उभा होतो. मा या शेजारी व वध आकारांची भांडी, तवे, ताटं , वा ा, पेले अ या अनेक गो चा ढ ग होता. मी नळ चालू केला आ ण फोन वाजला. फोन मा या अमेरीकेतील ब हणीचा- ऋजुताचा होता. भारतात या करोना या बात या वाचून तला आमची काळजी वाटत होती हणून आमची चौकशी कर यासाठ तने फोन केला होता. मी आ ा काय करतोय असं तने वचार यावर मी तला भांडी घासतोय असं उ र दलं. तचे पती सदानंद हे सु ा आमचं बोलणं ऐकत होते. यांना हे ऐकून गंमत वाटली. “आता तु हाला कळलं असेल क अमेरीकेत ही सव कामं आ हालाच कशी करावी लागतात ते. अथात आम याकडे डशवॉशर असतात जे कधी गैरहजर रहात नाहीत. “ मला आम या माग या अमेरीका भेट त डशवॉशर ब ल झालेलं आमचं बोलणं आठवलं. माझे भावोजी हणजे सदानंद यांना अमेरीकेतील तां क गती ब ल नेहमीच अ भमान वाटतो. ते यांचा नवा माट डशवॉशर मला दाखवत होते. ते हणाले, “हा डशवॉशर इतका माट आहे क आत कती भांडी आहेत हे समजून घेऊन तो नेमका हवा ततकाच साबण आ ण पाणी वापरतो.” मी यांना हटलं “आम याकडे या न माट डशवॉशर आहे. जो हे सव तर करतोच, शवाय वापरलेली भांडी गोळा करतो आ ण धुतलेली भांडी पुसून जाग या जागी ठे वतो.” "अरे वा! या डशवॉशरचं नाव काय आहे?” याने च कत होऊन वचारलं.

को वड या छायेत “ योती. ते आम या कामवा या बाईचं नाव आहे.” माझं हे उ र ऐकून आ ही दोघेही खो खो हसलो होतो. आज आमचा माटर डशवॉशर लॉकडाऊनमुळे त या घरी अडकून पडला होता आ ण ते काम मी करत होतो. पण खरं सांगायचं तर या अनुभवातून मी खूप काही शकलो आ ण माट ट डशवॉशर बनलो आहे. या कामाला सु वात कर यापूव मी मा या डो यातले इतर वचार बाजूला सारतो. जसे क , “अजून कती दवस मला हे काम करायला लागणार आहे?” “ही कोरोनाची साथ कधी संपणार आहे?” “हे चीनचे काही जै वक अ तर नाही ना?” “माझी बहीण अमेरीकेत सुर त राहील ना?” “माझी आ थक प र ती र राहील ना?”

हे सव वचार आ ाच कर याची गरज नाही. आ ा आप या पुढचं काम आहे ते भांडी घास याचं. मग मी मा यापुढ ल कामाचा रव न एक व तृत आढावा घेतो. एकुण भांडी कती आहेत, कती लहान, कती मोठ , कती काचेची, कती धातूची, कती खूप खराब झालेली आ ण कती व इ. एकदा ही सगळ मा हती जमा झाली क मी माझा ऍ न लॅन ठरवतो. प हला ट पा - प ह या ट यात मी येक भांड पा याने साफ करतो. याला चकटलेले, अडकलेले अ कण धुवून टाकतो. हे धुतलेले भांडे ठे वताना मी याचे वग करण करतो. चकट आ ण तेलकट भांडी एका जागी, छोटे चमचे वा ा एका जागी, सव ट लची ताटे एका जागी, सव काचेचे बाऊल, लेट व लासेस एका जागी. एवढे झा यावर प हला ट पा संपतो आ ण मी स या ट याकडे वळतो. सरा ट पा - या ट याम ये अनेक वेगवेगळे वभाग असतात. येक वभागात वर वणन केले या वभागांनुसार कती भांडी आहेत, सक जवळ कती जागा उपल आहे आ ण नळाचे पाणी चालू आहे क नाही या सवाचा वचार क न मी या ट यातील कोण या वभागाला कधी हात घालायचा हे ठरवतो. हा ट पा मु य कामाचा असतो. आ ण यासाठ मी एक चांगला बर आ ण ल वड डटजट सोप वापरतो. भांडे घासताना याचा येक कोपरा आ ण येक बाजू मी काळजीपूवक साफ करतो जेणेक न भां ावर कोणताही जळका डाग श लक राहणार नाही. चकट आ ण तेलकट भां ांसाठ जा त डटजट वापरावा लागतो आ ण चकटपणा नघून जाऊन भांडे घासताना एक मजेदार आवाज येऊ लागतो. सव भांडी अशी साफ के यानंतर मी तस या ट याकडे वळतो. तसरा ट पा - जर मा या नळाला पा याची जोराची धार असेल तर हा ट पा हणजे धबध याखाली आंघोळ कर यासारखा कवा गेला बाजार बाथ मम ये शॉवर घेत यासारखा मजेदार अनुभव ठरतो. सव भांडी पा याने वसळू न टाक याची ही वॉटरपाकमधली मजा संप यानंतर मी चौ या ट यावर जातो. चौथा ट पा - हातात एक मऊ सुती फडका घेऊन हा ट पा सु होतो. येक भांडे याने कोरडे कर याम ये खूपच मजा येत.े हातात या भां ाला एक व ताजेपणा मा या हाताला जाणवतो. काचेची भांडी एखा ा लहान बाळाला हाताळावे इत या नाजूकपणे हाताळावी लागतात जेणेक न चुकून ती हातातून पडू नये. सव भां ात पा याचा टपूसही राहणार नाही, यामुळे भां ावर डाग दसणार नाहीत कवा कचन या कपाटात बुरशी येणार नाही याची मी काळजी घेतो. पाचवा ट पा - हा शेवटचा ट पा आहे आ ण यात ही सव भांडी मी जाग या जागी ठे वतो जेणेक न वयंपाक करताना ती पटकन हाताशी येतील कवा अचानक पा णे आले तरी गडबड होणार नाही. हे सव ट पे काही खूप वेळ खात नाहीत. साधारणपणे भां ांची सं या पाहता तीस ते चाळ स म नटांचा अवधी पुरेसा ठरतो. या सव वेळात माझे पूण ल य धु यावर क त झालेले असते. भां ांचे व वध श, व वध वास, वेगवेगळे आकार, रंग, चमक इ. संवेदना व भां ांचा चुरचुरीत आवाज, पा या या धारेची खळखळ अशा वेगवेग या संवेदनातून मला जो आनंद मळतो तो मला मा या चता आ ण नैरा यापासून काही काळ का होईना मु दे तो. मी एका यानम न तीत जातो यामुळे मनाला शांतता मळते आ ण ताजेतवाने वाटते. अशा रतीने हे काम संप यावर मी अ धकच आनंद , शांत आ ण तरतरीत होतो. दोन मह वा या गो ी मी या कामातून शकलो: १. तु ही कोणतेही काम करा, अ रशः कोणतेही काम, जे हा तु ही ते तुमचं पूण ल य क त क न कवा मनःपूवक (स या या भाषेत बोलायचे तर mindfully) केलेत तर तु हाला याचा कंटाळा येत नाही कवा यामुळे दमायला होत नाही. उलट यानंतर तु ही अ धक ताजेतवाने होता. २. भां ांची सफाई बाहेर या पे ा आतून चांगली करावी लागते. तीच गो आप या मनाबाबतसु ा खरी आहे. आपलं मन साफ कर यासाठ नुसतं इतर लोकांना दसणारं बाहेरचं वतन सुधा न फायदा नसतो, तु हाला तुम या मनाची सफाई आतुनच करावी लागते. तु हाला वाटत नाही का क तु ही सु ा माट ट डशवॉशर बनू शकता?!

को वड या छायेत माकडचे ा अथात ‘Monkey Business’! वासंती मुदक णा झूम वग सु होता. वगात दोनच व ाथ होते - साडेआठ वषाचा अरीव आ ण सात वषाची सानू. हा ब तेक पाचवा कवा सहावा वग असावा. वयोमाना माणे वा टपणे वाग या या या दोन मकटांना मी ‘कॉल एट केट’ शकवून शकवून वठणीवर आणले होते. मो ां या कॉल माणे मी दोघांना वगा या सुरवातीला ‘अजे ा’ची लाईड दाखवली. यात प हले कलम होते ‘टॉ कग टक टू सानू’ आ ण सरे कलम होते ‘टॉ कग टक टू अरीव’. सुरवातीला मी शकवत असले कवा सराजण बोलत असला तरी दोघेही मनात आले क आवाज चढवून बोलायला लागायचे. मी ओरडले- रागावले तरी मा याकडे ल क न बोलत रहायचे. मग मी ‘टॉ कग टक’ची यु काढली. ने ट ह अमे रकन जमात म ये लोकशाहीचा एक भाग हणून जमातीचा मु य या माणसाला ‘टॉ कग टक’ दे तो फ तोच हातात ती काठ असेपयत बैठक त बोलू शकतो. तर ा क पनेचा उपयोग मी मा या वगात सु केला. मी खोट खोट ‘टॉ कग टक’ सानूला दली आ ण हटले, ‘हं बोल सानू, आता बोल याची तुझी पाळ ’. तर अरीव हणाला, “तू सानूलाका आधी ‘टॉ कग टक’ दलीस? हे काही बरोबर नाही”. प ह या दवसापासून मा या ल ात आले होते क मी एकाला जरा झुकते माप दले तर सरा रागवतो. माझी येक कृती या दोघां या ‘हे बरोबर आहे का’ कवा ‘Is it fair?’ या चाळणीतून चाळू न घेतली जाते आ ण मी जर कुठे उणी पडले तर लगेच मला जाब वचारला जातो. मी हसत अरीवला हणाले, “कारण गे या र ववारी मी ‘टॉ कग टक’ आधी तुला दली होती, आठवते का?” याने होकार दला आ ण मी टायमर लावत सानूला परत हणाले, “बोल सानू, तुझं एक म नट आता सु होत आहे”. सानू कुठ याही वषयावर कुणाशीही तासंतास बोलू शकते. फोनवर “वासंतीSSS” अशी सु वात क न ती मला ल डवाळपणे डोके खी कशी घालवायची कवा त या बाबांना भात कती आवडतो आ ण जा तीत जा त भात खाता यावा हणून बाबा कायकाय यु या लढवतात हे ती हसून-हसून सांगते. या दोघांची मातृभाषा कानडी आहे पण मला कानडी येत नाही हणून आमचा वग इं जीत चालतो. सानूने “ I went to the balcony and found a big Monarch butterfly” अशी सु वात केली आ ण टायमरची घंटा वाजली तरी बोलतच रा हली. “Sanu, Sanu, your time is up”, असे मी हट यावर कुठे वारीचे ल मा याकडे गेले आ ण सानू बोलायची थांबली. मग मी ‘टॉ कग टक’ अ रवला दली. सानूची बोल याची शैली अगद बोलक आ ण ना मय आहे तर अरीवची धीर गंभीर. तो बोल याची कधीच घाई करत नाही. हळू हळू तो आप याला जे काही सांगायचे असेल ते सांगतो. कधी कधी तर तो फारसा बोलतच नाही. पण काहीतरी मजेदार सांगून वतःच हसतो. याचे मोठे डोळे मा फार बोलके आहेत. अजडातली सरी लाईड होती ‘कॉल एट केट’ची. एट केट हा श द दोघांनी प ह यांदा लाईडवर पा हला ते हा अरीवने वचारले “Why isn’t it ATKT?” मग सानू हणाली, “Or atqwette??” मला पुणे व ापीठातील ए.ट .के.ट . हणजे ‘allowed to keep terms’ या नयमाची आठवण झाली आ ण मी वतःशीच हसले. एट केट श दावरचा क लोळ जरा कमी झा यावर ‘बोलायचे असेल तर आधी हात उं चावून परवानगी मागायची’, ‘एकजण बोलत असेल तर याचे बोलणे संप यावर आपण बोलावे’ हे सगळे नयम मी यांना आळ पाळ ने वाचायला लावले. आता दोघांना या नयमांची सवय झाली आहे तरी अधूनमधून दोघांना बोल याची ती इ ा होते आ ण मग मजेशीर संग घडतात. मोनाक फुलपाखरांवरचा मा हतीपट पा न सानूने तला या पाखरांब ल आधीच काय मा हत होते हे सांगायला सु वात केली. पण अरीवला तचे बोलणे ऐकायचे न हते हणून तो खाल या आवाजात ‘येस येस येस’ असे हणत रा हला. सानूने या याकडे पूणपणे ल करत फुलपाखरांची इ यंभूत मा हती दली आ ण मग शांतपणे याला हणाली, “Why did you say yes, yes, yes?” तो फ हसला. सानूला पण वगात मा हतीपट सु असला क ग प बसवत नाही. हणून तने आजकाल एक नवीन यु काढली आहे. ती वतःला ‘mute’ करते आ ण मग खोलीत फरत कवा खुच वरच चुळबुळ करत वतःशीच बोलत राहते. काय हणावे या पोरीला! एकदा ती वतःला mute करायला वसरली आ ण मी तला आठवण क न दे ताच नं लाजता मला हणाली “No problem, Vasanti” आ ण वतःला mute करत आप याशीच बोलू लागली. काल मी प हला तास इं जी वाचनाचा घेतला. इसाप या गो ी मी यांना वाचायला द या. इसाप कोण हे दाखव यासाठ इंटरनेटवरचे याचे एका अधपुत याचे च दाखवले तर या च ावर दोघांनी ांची सरब ीच केली. “ याला पाय न हते का?”, “ याचे हात कुठे गेल? े ” अशा ांना उ रे दे तादे ता मा या नाक नऊ आले. काही पालक मुलांना इंटरनेटवर जा ती मोकळ क दे त नाहीत पण व कपी डया यात या यात जरा सुर त हणून मी हणाले, “जर मला एखा ा वषयाची मा हती हवी असेल तर मी याचा शोध वक पी डयात घेते”. अरीव लगेच हणाला, “मी गूगल करतो”. इसाप याने ल हले या ‘फेब स’करता स आहे. फेब स हणजे अशा गो ी यात ाणी माणसांसारखे वागतात आ ण बोलतात आ ण येक गो ीत एक ‘मॉरल’ कवा नै तक ता पय असते. सानू लगेच हणाली, “Vasanti, I know moral stories. My mother tells me moral stories everyday”. प हली गो होती ‘The Frog and the Ox’. सानूने ती वाचली आ ण हणाली “What is an ox?” अमे रकेत या पोरांना बैल ओळखीचा वाटत नाही हणून मी वतःशीच हसले. पुढची गो अरीवने वाचली. याला या गो ीचे ता पय आवडले असावे असे मला वाटले. पण तेव ात झूमने मला इशारा केला, “The meeting will end in 10 minutes. Please upgrade!”

को वड या छायेत अरीव लगेच उ े जत झाला आ ण हणू लागला, “Zoom is ending! Zoom is ending!” मी हणाले, “Yes, just join again”. पण याला ‘का?’ हा पडला होता, “Why? The class is not over. Why is zoom ending?” मग मी याला समजावून सां गतले क झूमने ही सोय आप याला फुकट दली आहे, जर चाळ स म नटांपे ा जा त वेळ आप याला बोलायचे असेल तर पैसे भरावे लागतात. पण याला हे काही पटे ना. खरे तर आप या सग यांनाच इंटरनेटवर सगळे काही फुकट मळ याची सवय झाली आहे! पण कुठलीही गो फुकट असेल तर यात काहीतरी गोम असते, हे या चमुक या जीवाला कसे समजवायचे? शेवट “मी कंजूस अस यामुळे झूमला पैसे दले नाहीत आ ण हणून झूमवाले आप याला परत जॉईन करायला लावत आहेत” असे सांगून मी याची समजूत काढली. वग परत सु झाला आ ण अँडने मुलांचा ताबा घेतला आ ण ‘अरली लाईफ’ हणजे जगात जीव कसा नमाण झाला हे सांगू लागला. याचा वग मुलांना नेहमी आवडतो कारण वालामुखी, पृ वीवर झालेले उ कापात, वादळे असे ोटक वषय तो शकवतो. वगा या सुरवातीला जर तो झूमवर दसला नाही तर लगेच ‘तो कुठे आहे? कधी येणार?’ असले सु होतात. मी आपली फोटो सथे सस, काश, ाकरण, वाचन असले साधे वषय शकवते! वाचताना दो ही मुले पानावर नसलेले श द का घुसडतात आ ण यांचा उ ार का करतात हे कोडे मला अजून सुटलेले नाही. मग चूक दाखवून दली क बनचूक वा ये वाचतात! मधेच दोघांना एका जागी बसून शक याचा कंटाळा येतो आ ण मग “Can we do monkey business? Please, please!’ चा घोष सु होतो. अरीव आपला छोटा भाऊ आ ण आईव डलांबरोबर बॉ टनम ये राहतो तर सानू आप या आईव डलांबरोबर म नयापलीसम ये राहते. रोज दोघे फेसटाईमवर ‘monkey business’ करतात, हणजे काय क गाद वर उ ा मारत एकमेकांशी तासंतास बोलतात. कधीकधी मला पण मूल हावंसं वाटतं आ ण मग मी माझा ‘screen share’ बंद करते आ ण आ ही तघे एकमेकांकडे पाहात माकडांसार या उ ा मारतो! असेच मी एकदा यांना वचारले क मोठे झा यावर तु ही कोण होणार? एका णाचाही वलंब नं करता अरीव हणाला “डॉ टर!” आ ण सानू हणाली “सायं ट ट!” सानूचे आपण कोण होणार याचे वचार णा णाला बदलत असतात. नुकताच मी ‘मंक बझनेस’ हा वषय शकवलं होता. यात चपँझी आ ण बोनोबो यांचा अ यास वै ा नकांनी कसा केला हे पा न सानू अगद े रत झाली कारण दो ही वै ा नक बायका हो या. ा यांचे नरी ण क न ती मा हती लपबोडावर लहायची हे पा न सानू पण तसेच क लागली. अरीव चावटपणे लगेच तला हणाला, “What happened to becoming ‘dog whisperer’?” कारण काल-परवापयत सानूची ‘dog whisperer’ हो याची ई ा होती! एकदा दोघे फार दं गा करत होते आ ण मा याकडे पार ल करत होते हणून मी परी ा घे याची धमक दली. लगेच आणखीनच ग धळ माजला! पण मी दलेला गृहपाठ दोघेही लगेच करतात. मंक बझनेस या दवशी मी नवर ल हलेला गृहपाठ - ‘ए स ब ल मा हती गोळा करा’ - वाचून अरीव हणाला, “This is not good homework; it needs to be more specific”! साडेआठ वषा या मुला या त डी ‘ े स फक’ हा श द ऐकून मी इतक आ यच कत झाले क ‘You tell me what to write’ असे बोलून गेले! तसा हा हणतो कसा, “Research and find facts about apes”! आ ण सानू हणाली “Watch videos and make notes”! वग संप यावर आजकाल दोघेही मला एस.एम.एस.वर हॉइस मेसेज सोडतात. आ ण ते मेसेजेस इतके गोड असतात क मी लगेच दोघां या ेमात पडते. सानूचा मेसेज असा असतो - ‘VasantiSSS! The class was very good! I love the dinosaurs and the apes!’ आ ण अरीवचा असा असतो ‘Thank you, Vasanti aunty! I liked to learn about volcanoes and light!’ पण कधीकधी तो मला ‘I am too old for this video’ असे सांगायला पण घाबरत नाही! याने मला एकदा वगात वचारले, “When will the classes end?” मी हणाले, “When your school starts!” हे उ र वारीला आवडले असावे कारण याने आणखी उप वचारले नाहीत! सानूला हा पडला नाही कारण ती या यापे ा लहान आहे आ ण इतका पुढचा वचार ती करत नाही! बचारीला कु ा मा हवा आहे! ा र ववारचा माझा वषय आहे ‘काळ’ हणजे भूतकाळ, वतमानकाळ, वगैरे आ ण अँडचा आहे ‘डायनसॉस’. अथात लोक यता आणखी वाढणार आहे हे काही सांगायला हवे का!

My Selfish Inspiration: Raj Khankari

The world is in trouble Human race is in trouble So, I asked myself “What should I do?”

The answer was obvious “I need to protect myself For my family, for my children, And for my future grandchildren” Boy, wouldn’t this be nice story to tell my grandchildren!

Once in a lifetime event How the shops were closed And the roads were empty How people were wearing masks And everyone was hiding inside How everyone was scared And thousands were dying..

All of a sudden, I heard a small voice Hmm… it’s in my head Oh, that’s my grandchild talking “Grandpa, what did you do?”

“I stayed inside and made sure I didn’t get sick” “I know. That’s what everybody did” “Then what do you mean?”

“What did you do to help those people that were dying?”

What did I do?

What did I do when the world was in trouble?

I need to do something that make my grandchildren proud!

So, they can tell a story “You know in 2020, when the world was in trouble My grandpa did .......

And he helped ...... .......”

There was the answer to my question - “what should I do?”

I just need to fill in those gaps and connect those dots To make my grandchildren proud And my parents in the heaven smile!!

को वड या छायेत Rotary Club of Maple Grove Collaborates with IAM to combat COVID-19

The Rotary Club of Maple Grove (RCMG) is collaborating with the India Association of Minnesota (IAM) during these difficult times to combat COVID-19. Our member, Raj Khankari who is President of the Rotary Club of Maple Grove, recently received a Global Grant for $60,000 from the Rotary International to supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the healthcare facilities in Minnesota. RCMG and IAM will be buying various PPEs and making face masks for the patients and healthcare workers in the hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare facilities in Minnesota. Receiving a Global Grant for the United States is a rare occurrence. Majority of the times the donations and grants are given to those parts of the world where they are most needed. However, the tiny Coronavirus has brought the mighty to their knees!

Unfortunately, US continues to have the highest number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19 with no end in sight.

Recently, the cases in Minnesota have again started rising and the demand for the PPEs continues to grow.

Paradoxically, several Rotary Clubs from India (Thane) contributed to this grant for Minnesota. Earlier in the year, RCMG had also contributed to another Rotary Global Grant for buying PPEs for the Thane district.

Rotary is a service organization that focuses on projects to promote peace, health, and humanitarian causes in our local community and throughout the world. The Rotary Club of Maple Grove is one of 35,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries across the globe with 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. India Association of Minnesota (IAM) is a 47-year-old umbrella coalition organization representing 50,000+ Asian Indians in Minnesota.

RCMG and IAM have already been highly active in helping people during the COVID crisis. The members of RCMG have stitched and delivered thousands of cloth masks to the people in need. Similarly, volunteers at IAM, through its IAM Coalition COVID-19 Task force, have been working tirelessly for the last several months in making and delivering masks, gowns, caps, and other PPEs to the healthcare facilities around the Twin Cities. They have also been delivering food and groceries. Some of the MAM members have also been involved in helping RCMG and IAM in this endeavor. After collecting the supporting funds, RCMG and IAM members and volunteers will start buying and making the PPEs and delivering those to healthcare facilities around the Twin Cities.

साठ या दशकातले टांझा नयातले एक दाट जंगल. यात भ या थोर या वृ ांम ये चपांझ चा कळप एकमेकांशी खेळ यात दं ग. काही चपांझी खाली मोक या मैदानात बसून ऊन खात आहेत. तर आणखीन काही वा ळात काडी खुपसून तासनतास कडे, मुं या पकडू न ते खात आहेत. रा झा यावर चपांझी झाड चढू न आपापले पानां फां ांपासून बछाने तयार करीत आ ण यात झोपत असत. यांचा हा दन म मा थोडं लांबवर उभे रा न तशीतील एक त णी बणीने रोज तासनतास उभी रा न बघत असे. बर्याचदा तची रा ही जंगलात चपांझ ची हालचाल टपत जात असे. सोबतीला एक रजई, थोडी कॉफ आ ण रा ीची जंगलातील नरव शांतता. तला जंगलात चं काशात तीत केले या रा ी अ तशय सुंदर वाटत असे. वाचकांनी ओळखले असेलच क मी कोण या पु तकाब ल ल हते आहे. "इन द शॅडो ऑफ मॅन" हे जेन गूडऑल ल खत पु तक आहे. यात यांनी टांझा नयातील गॉ बे म नॅशनल पाक येथील केले या चपांझी संशोधना वषयी ल हले आहे. जेन यांनी टांझा नयात आपले काम सु केले यावेळ यां याकडे ाणी संशोधन या वषयातील काही अनुभव न हता. मा ाणी संशोधनात खूप ची होती. सु वातीला या आप या आई बरोबर गॉ बे येथील जंगलात डेरेदाखल झा या. जवळ जुजबी सामान, काही औषधे एवढे च होते. य कामाला सु वात कर याआधी गॉ बे या आजूबाजूला राहणार्या जमातीतील लोकांशी ओळख क न घेणे मह वाचे होते. जंगलाची ओळख होईपयत वाटाडे बरोबर येईत. काम सु के यावर चपांझी पाह यासाठ कोण या जागा चांग या आहेत या शोधत असत. बर्याचदा लांबवर येणारे चपांझ चे आवाज ऐकू येत मा दाट अर यात यांचे दशन लभ होई. कधी लांबून दसले तरी यांचे दशन अगद थोडा वेळच होई. रा ी या जंगलातील मु कामात कधी बब ा या दशनाने वाटलेली भती यांची वणने वाचतांना ले खके या मनाला आलेली नैरा याची आ ण भयाची जाणीव क न दे तात.

पुढ ल काही काळात दाट जंगलात जाऊन चपांझी जरा जवळू न पाहता येऊ लागले. यातही काही चपांझ नी मानवा या उप तीला हरकत घेऊन ले खकेवर ह ले केले. कमान दोन ते तीन वेळा झाले या या ह यांचे वणन अंगावर काटा आणतात. मा हळू हळू ले खकेची चकाट आ ण चपांझी माकडांना कोणतीही हानी न पोहचव याची वृ ी पा न यातील काही चपांझी ले खके या उप तीला मा यता दे ऊ लागले. या काळातील चपांझी ब ल या च लत अशा काही समजुती कती उपर्या आहेत याची जाणीव ले खकेला आप या संशोधनातून झाली. तसेच ले खकेची व य ाणी संशोधनातील पाट कोरीच अस याने तने आप या प तीने अनेक वेगळे योग केले. जसे क चपांझ चे नरी ण करताना यांना मानवी नावे दे णे उदा:लो, फफ , डे हड इ याद . तसेच अ धक चांगले संशोधन हावे हणून चपांझ साठ आप या तंबूंजवळ के यांची व ा करणे. या सग या उपाय योजनांमुळे संशोधन तर चांग या कारे पार पडले. या वेळेची च लत संशोधन शैली मा व य ा यांना नाव दे णे, यां यासाठ कृ म खा व ा करणे या सव गो या वरोधात होती. यामुळे जेन यां यावर ट काही बरीच झाली. पु तकात अनेक गो ची सखोल वणने आहेत. जसे क चपांझी आईची आप या अप याशी वागणूक, या आप या अप याची कती व कशी काळजी घेतात, बाल अप यांचे जीवन म. एवढे च न हे तर चपांझ नी सापळा रचून केलेली शकार यांची थरारक वणने ही आहेत. चपांझीचा ज म ते मृ यू अशा द घ कालखंडाचे वणन पु तकात वाचायला मळतं. तरीही ले खकेने कुठे ही बोजड शा ीय भाषा न वापरता अ तशय सो या आ ण ओघव या शैलीत वणन केलेले आहे. यामुळे पु तक एकदा हाती घेत यावर वाचून पूण के या शवाय बाजूला ठे ववत नाही.

Kids Corner The Gift of Learning Amruta Rajeev (11th grade) Namaste, My name is Amruta Rajeev and I'm currently a rising sophomore at TJHSST in Alexandria, VA. I lived in Minnesota until fifth grade and I wanted to submit an entry regarding my team's experience in a tutoring organization we created, The Gift of Learning, in this month's edition of Hitguj.

Dhanyawaad, Amruta Rajeev ***************************************************************************************************************************************** Recently, my friends and I created a non-profit tutoring organization called The Gift of Learning. We are dedicated to enriching students, in grades 1-10, across the nation through free online tutoring. As a matter of introduction, Amruta Rajeev, Arya Nalavade, Shivangi Gosain, and Eesha Kulkarni are our founders. We reside in Fairfax County and felt a need for free tutoring. By making our service free, students will have better access to education during this difficult Covid19 pandemic. Our goal is to pass on the information we have already learned and use it to help students who need help.

We provide tutoring and one-time help as well. We offer tutoring in Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Computer Science, and Art. We run on a complete volunteer basis, which makes our tutors even more dedicated to their students!

Additionally, we host live webinars by professionals, like doctors and engineers, that students and tutors can watch from the comfort of their own house!

So, how did we start our organization? Initially, we all volunteered at an organization that also provided education to young children through online tutoring. This organization was fully stem-based, so it only offered Math, Science, and Computer Science courses. However, soon that organization stopped making their services free and charged the students a monthly fee, that would go towards the renovations of their building, for getting tutored. This completely baffled us, because this completely went against our beliefs. The whole point of us volunteering there was so that we could improve a child’s education without expecting anything in return. That night, one of our founders, Arya Nalavade, texted us “this might be a crazy idea, but what if we started our own tutoring service? It would be completely free and we could offer more courses”. All of us were instantly intrigued, and we immediately started discussing the details. At last, on Monday, May 25th, The Gift of Learning was born.

Since we were completely new to this, we had a lot of trial and error in the process. One of the major issues we had was getting students. Since all of the tutors were around our age, it was easy to reach out to them and convince them to join our organization. The audience of our Instagram account was also mainly teenagers. We watched the number of our tutors go up, and the students remained the same. Soon we realized that our advertising techniques need to be improved. We came together and arrived at a solution that we should advertise through our parents’ social platforms. We started posting on Next Door, a neighborhood connections app, and Facebook, where the audience was mostly parents.

From there, the number of students finally began to grow! We started our first round of tutoring and it was a success! In our first round, we had around 100 tutors and 170 students. However soon we realized that although we were able to reach our organization out to parents, most of the students that were getting tutored didn’t really need the help, they just wanted extra preparation before the school year started. While we were happy to provide this service to them, we wanted to reach more students who were genuinely struggling in school and cannot afford tutoring services. As a result of this, we realized that the only way we can reach out to these families is through their child’s school counselor. We began emailing the counselors of our local elementary schools, and we were glad that we were finally able to make a significant impact on a child’s education.

Let’s talk about some goals we have for our organization in the future. Putting it simply, we are working toward closing the educational gap between low-income/minority students and the privileged students. It is not something new that low-income and minority students do not receive the same top-notch education as the wealthy and those from certain communities. When asked why there have been many responses such “It’s not their culture to work hard and they are less deserving” or “some students are just not naturally gifted”. Although FCPS, the county in which our Founders reside in, is regarded as one of the country’s top school districts with more than 92% of students planning to pursue education after high school.

We never truly take the time to think about the students in low-income and minority areas, hidden by the shadows of the affluent and privileged. It has always been drilled in our heads that smarter kids should get challenging work while the rest go at a slower pace. In fact, it does make sense. It’s hard to see anything wrong with that system, especially if you’ve grown up in the system, where separation began as early as 2nd grade. At that age, we were all the product of our parents’ wealth and time. The cognitive tests administered in 1st and 2nd grade measured not the natural giftedness you had, but the quality of resources your family invested in you at a young age. If they were able to buy tutors and prep books to prepare their children for these tests. Many low-income and minority students simply did not have the same degree of resources invested in them and therefore were underrepresented in these programs. The results were obvious, a typical case of equality v.s equity. Students who had access to these resources kept getting smarter, while the other students slowly threaded along.

To decrease this educational gap, we founded The Gift of Learning. Our goal is to pass on the information we have already learned and use it to help students who need help on it for free. We provide tutoring and one-time help as well.

We offer tutoring in Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Computer Science, and Art. We run on a volunteer basis, which makes our tutors even more dedicated to their students! Additionally, we are currently working on our project Bhutan. Due to the crisis in Bhutan, many of the Bhutanese people were provided asylum by the US Government and settled in various parts of the US. However, many of these child refugees have not received the proper education and are finding it difficult to adapt to this huge cultural shift. We believe that education is priceless. It should be a basic right, not a privilege. It shouldn’t come with a price tag. By making our service free, students will have better access to education. This was the motive behind our Project Bhutan. By giving each of these children a tutor they can bridge the gap in their academic knowledge, but also build a social bond. After their eight week sessions, our students don’t consider them simply as their teachers. They consider them their partner, mentor, and friend.

We are actively working on reaching out to underprivileged families. Since we do not have a lot of contacts it has been difficult reaching out to them. Reaching out to these families is really important to us because so far we have only been able to reach out to families who have children who need help with a particular subject. While we are more than happy to help their children, we know that they are more than able to afford paid tutoring services.

One main problem is that these days, children aren’t that interested in their education. School is portrayed as this horrid environment that parents force upon their kids. At the Gift of Learning, we push past these portrayals and beliefs.

With our dedicated tutors, we make learning positive! Our tutors go beyond what is taught at a classroom level and customize the curriculum to make sessions significantly more interesting. Since the tutors are still in school, either high school or college, they know what it is like to struggle on assignments and tests, and can offer more helpful strategies than the ones students will find in their textbooks at school. Through this, they will make learning more enjoyable and change the portrayals of it.

For many years individuals have considered intellect a ranking, the smarter you are the more respect you deserve.

Somehow society had led everyone to believe that having a higher IQ or better grades than others matters and makes an individual more valuable and worthy. This often made students, who were struggling in school, feel inferior. Additionally, they were reluctant towards asking for help. And through this, without a guiding hand, many struggling students eventually began distancing themselves further and further from education. We believe that education and academics are not competition. It should not be about who is the smartest or gets the most As. At The Gift of Learning, we believe that everyone has something to offer. Let’s use this as an opportunity to share our gifts with others and show students the real value of education because competition will only tear us all apart.Our team has also put together some sentences of wisdom to any teenagers looking to create an organization. First of all, you must start early. Create a plan of what it is you want to do and execute it. Whatever you say you are going to do tomorrow, do it today. There is no better time than the present, and procrastination is going to be your number one enemy. You will need to have patience and you are going to need to accept that the road to success is definitely going to be a bumpy one. You might hit a few potholes, but you need to keep in mind what your why you are doing what you are doing. In the end, your hard work will pay off.

All proceeds will go directly towards funding the food and housing for the Bhutanese refugees or towards a local charity/organization, but we are still working out all the details for that. Kids Corner The Corona Effect: Do not take things granted!

Anushka Chaudhari (11th grade) If you claim that Covid-19 has not made an impact on your life, well, I have no idea what you did before this started. For me, it had a huge impact on my life. This pandemic has made me appreciate the everyday activities that I had never taken notice of before.

In January, I recall talking about this virus in my A.P. United States History class. During that time, the virus had been in China only; I remember my teacher asking the students whether they were concerned about this virus. Almost every student said no. Three months later, we were at home, and for the first few weeks we were learning online. Everyone was so excited just because we didn’t have to wake up at 6:00 am every morning. Online school was relaxing; there was a lot of time to submit assignments. In pure honesty, my friends and I didn't learn much. As the months went by and April suddenly became May and we were stuck at home for who knows how long, we all started to miss each other. In May, we were all of a sudden stuck at home, missing extra-curricular activities and it felt like our whole world had turned upside down. Well, technically, not being able to see friends does not make your world turn upside down, but high schoolers are dramatic, so stick with me. These activities we once thought as a burden became much desired. When a mundane trip to a grocery store had to be a planned event, I realized the gravity of the situation. The little things like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and packaged food were all something we took for granted. We never realized how much we rely on those items and when they were gone, it was tough to replace them. In my Chinmaya Mission Balvihar Class, when asked the question "what have you learned from this experience," almost 75% of the class answered “do not take things in life for granted�. All of the activities I did, I thought were normal and were part of everyday life, suddenly seemed so far away.

With so much time on my hands, I had to find something to keep me busy. While watching youtube, I came across this beautiful oil pastel drawing tutorial. I dug out an old oil pastel set and got to work. The first pictures turned out well, and I was encouraged to try more drawings. I have done many more drawings now, it helps me kill time while feeling rewarded.

This activity helped me talk to my friends about art and have interesting conversations about my experience with art. I also found some time to experiment with cooking and play a few songs on the piano.

Two weeks ago, we took a trip to Michigan to visit our cousins. The decision to go on this trip was incredibly difficult to make. We contemplated whether this was a good idea for one month. Eventually, we agreed to go, but we promised we would not go outside anywhere in Michigan. The reason being Michigan had a higher risk rate than Minnesota, and we didn’t want to endanger ourselves. The road trip was quite the experience because of the time. Whenever we used the bathroom, my mom would take out our bag of cleaning supplies from the back of our car. All that was missing when we entered a store was a hazmat suit. Other than using the bathroom, the temptation to eat out was making everyone in the car crazy, but we held it together. What surprised me the most was how many people were going out even in these times. Many people were eating in restaurants. Once we got to Michigan, the trip was much different than the ones we made in the past. We spent most of our time in the house and in the yard playing late-night badminton games. In the past we went sight-seeing and met with friends from Michigan. This time things were very different.

Next year, I will be a junior in high school. It will be an extremely busy year and this forced break will help me prepare for the coming year. Although everything is uncertain about next year, I have promised myself that I will make the most of the opportunities given to me. Here are a few of my oil pastels!

Kids Corner Brookie Recipe Advika Chaudhari (7th Grade) Have you heard of brookies? They’re gooey yummy brownie-cookie squares just as the name says.

They have a top half of cookie dough, and the bottom half of brownie batter. For dessert lovers who can’t decide between cookies and brownies, this is an amazing dessert. I love making brookies (or anything sweet) because it feels amazing when people like what I make. I first got interested in baking when I went over to my friends house, and baked cookies. We had planned to make something together and so we decided on easy-bake cookies. It was quick, but really fun.

They were so good, especially with the frosting. The first time I made brookie bars was for my First Lego League team as a reward for our hard work. My team enjoyed it, but I was critiquing myself in my head, and thinking of what I could do to make it better. I really like the way that baking and cooking mixes math, science, and food to make something that tastes amazing.

I also like baking because you sometimes have to improvise like when we made the cookies, we had to scoop the frosting on because the cookies were too crumbly. My passion for baking continues, and I enjoy sharing recipes with anyone else who wants to try something new, or likes to bake. So here is a recipe for one of my personal favorites, the gooey, mouthwatering brookie.

For the Brownie: ¼ cup unsalted butter ⅓ cup sugar ⅓ cup packed brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup all-purpose flour ¼ cup dark cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon salt ½ cup chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and line a 8 or 9 inch pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil. If you use aluminum foil, be sure to lightly grease the bottom of the pan. Also, do not try to make it less buttery or sugary, or it won’t turn out very good!

Making the Brownie layer: Melt the butter in your microwave until just barely melted. Don’t overheat it, or else your brookie will not be fluffy, so it’s ok if you still have some blobs of butter in already melted butter. Pour the butter into a medium sized bowl, or a standing mixer bowl. (I like to use a standing mixer, but if you don’t have one, use a normal hand held whisk.) Whisk in the sugar and brown sugar, wait for it to combine, then add the egg and vanilla extract. (For those using a hand held whisk, switch to a wooden spoon now.) Add the all-purpose flour, the cocoa powder, and the salt. Whisk/Stir until almost combined. (Now, for the people using a standing mixer, take the bowl out.) Add the chocolate chips and stir the batter until it is completely combined, and chocolate chips are spread evenly throughout the whole batter. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, and spread it evenly. You can wet your fingers a little and pat the batter out evenly.

For the Cookie: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter ⅓ cup sugar ⅓ cup packed brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt ½ cup chocolate chips

Kids Corner Making the Cookie layer: To make the cookie layer, melt the butter, making sure to melt it just barely. Put it in a clean mixing bowl. (I use the standing mixer bowl in the middle so I can reuse it for this part) whisk in the egg and brown sugar until combined.

Whisk in the egg and vanilla. Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Now take it out of the standing mixer, and the chocolate chips. Mix with a wooden spoon until combined. Spread it onto the brownie layers, and make sure you cover the brownie layer completely. You can wet your hand a little again to pat it down. Sprinkle the top of the cookie with a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar, and bake it in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes. Stick a small knife or toothpick in it, and if it comes out clean (there might be chocolate on it if you poked a chocolate chip) it is done. The top should be golden-brown and hopefully smells amazing.

Cool it for about 15-20 minutes, then cut it into squares, and serve.

You might be thinking “why a wooden spoon?” Wooden spoons are very helpful for cooking and baking because they don’t get too hot to hold, and they don’t scratch pots or bowls. Another big plus is that they can stir any thickness level.

I hope you enjoyed this recipe!! (And it tastes amazing with vanilla ice cream!! Yum!) You can warm it up and eat it later, but the brookie tastes best right out of the oven. (Of course, wait for it to cool down a little!).
