Rev Lynn Hamilton will be leaving our Pastoral Charge this fall to begin her journey with a new congregation. We thank Lynn for her many contributions through new initiatives, applying for grants, pastoral care and support during her time with us. We wish her all the blessings that life can hold as she settles into a new community of faith.

Eramosa Pastoral Charge CONNECT29 will be hosting euchre games at Barrie Hill Church on the first Monday of every month from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and also on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

All are welcome to join in the fun and fellowship.

Update from Mission and Outreach “The Eramosa Pastoral Charge Mission & Outreach would like to thank the drivers who delivered sweet corn to Guelph, Rockwood & Fergus Food Banks. They were Ted Kent, Brian Starr, Bill Somerville, Steve Weir & Sue Weir.

Big THANK YOU to Lynn, Paul and Sarah(Benham)Parkinson who donated 250 dozen of sweet corn. The volunteers at the food banks reported how much the clients really appreciated the fresh corn.”

the 68 campers who attended VBS in August and their families the volunteers in the kitchen who made two snacks and lunch for 110 people each day the tent crew who erected and took down the large tent the snow fence crew who erected a safety fence at the road the pillow sewers who sewed pillows for each of the campers the door monitors who also handed out bandaids the crazy science lady who entertains and teaches both science and Bible stories the twenty five youth volunteers who gave their all to entertain and care for the campers the Bible stories drama team who shared Bible stories in fun ways the craft family who helped the campers create cool crafts the camper support team who made sure that every camper had fun and stayed safe the music team who taught songs both traditional and new the morning opening team who shared Bible stories, songs and prayer the Grace team who reminded us to GIVE THANKS! And a big thanks to Terry Knierim for organizing VBS.

News from Speedside…..

Speedside news…

Speedside held its annual "Drive Thru" Turkey Supper on Thursday, September 28th.

Sales seemed to lag behind until the last few days and then the phones kept ringing and we ended up having a sell-out. The weather really co-operated. Many of the cars had to tend with the farmers and their machinery that were also making use of the perfect harvest weather. These events would not be successful if it were not for the many volunteers who organize it, plus the many workers who show up to help. Thank you to all who helped and to those who bought meals to support the church. 200 dinners were sold.

Speedside United Church celebrated its 178th Anniversary on Sunday, September 24th. Bruce Miller welcomed everyone to this special occasion. Later in the service, Sue Weir introduced the guest speaker, Curt McQueen, manager of the Centre Wellington Food Bank. During his presentation he told us that he has held this position for just a few months. He explained how the Food Bank operates with the help of many volunteers. He also said the number of people relying on the Food Bank is much higher this year than in 2022.

Many people donate to the Food Bank in various ways. Grocery stores are great supporters, as well as service clubs and churches. Curt thanked both Barrie Hill and Speedside for the support the food bank has received from them. Sue then thanked Curt for speaking at the Anniversary.

After enjoying anniversary cake and ice cream, the trunk of Curt's car was loaded with donations for the food bank and he headed back to Fergus to unload.

Family news from the Gordons…

Asa won two first prizes at the Fergus Fall Fair in September. The first time Aṣa has ever submitted artwork to a fair/competition. She was also awarded for receiving the highest points in her age group; grade 3-5.

Speedside news…

Our sympathy to the Wheeler family on the recent death of Eleanor Wheeler.

In August the Pletsch family flew to Campbell River B.C. to attend the wedding of their grandson Luke.

The new family member is Rachelle Pletsch. Luke is a fisheries inspector. Rachelle is a social worker.

Don’t throw away pumpkins after Halloween.

Find woods or a field near you, smash them open and leave for the wildlife to eat. Pumpkin is safe for them and the seeds act as a natural dewormer.

If you were at the Rockwood Farmers market this season, you would have seen the three generations of the Parkinson family selling their home grown corn.

Family news from the Parkers…

Jim and Judy would like to thank everyone for all the prayers for their son during the past year during his fight against cancer. His cancer is now in full remission. Steve is feeling good and is regaining his strength. Painful neuropathy in his feet is still a problem however.

The same weekend he got the good news about the cancer, his daughter Sarah and Dan Scott were married. Their family is feeling truly blessed.

It’s the special people we meet along life’s road who help us appreciate the journey 11

He will speak on Arthur, Canada’s most patriotic village.

Barrie Hill news…

Each month we are collecting items for the Centre Wellington Food Bank.

October – Jam November – canned vegetables December – specialty Christmas food items.

Drop off box in the foyer by the back door.

Once again for the upcoming Christmas season we will be supporting the Centre Wellington Food Bank with donations of specialty food items ie, box of chocolates, candy, Christmas puddings, festive crackers, gingerbread house kits, packaged nuts etc.

Or if you wish to make a financial donation to the Food Bank for their Christmas gift card purchases please make your cheque out to the Centre Wellington Food Bank and place in an envelope on the offering plate or give directly to Shirley McFarlane. A tax receipt will be issued to all donations over $20. So please include your name and address on your envelope so a tax receipt can be mailed out to you in the new year.

Deadline for monetary submissions is November 5.

Deadline for food donations is December 10.

The UCW will be hosting a PUMPKIN PAINTING night on Tuesday, October 17 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the church.

Lill Ingram will be the instructor.

Please bring your own small pumpkin.

Paints will be provided.

All welcome to join in some fellowship, painting and as always…refreshments.

Bumblebee queens spend their winter just below ground under leaf litter. In the spring they will emerge and dig a burrow to make a new home and lay their eggs.

Protect bumblebees by leaving leaf litter and debris in place until late spring.

Knierim family news…

The Knierim family had a camping weekend on Labour Day weekend at Shamadon Resort. Justus and Pauline have two sons, Paul and Peter. They have seven grandchildren. The grandchildren enjoyed playing on the inflatables in the pond, riding bikes, jumping on the trampoline and playing in the canoes and kayaks. The adults enjoyed shuffleboard and visiting. It was great to have the family together for the weekend as Peter lives near Lindsay. In late September, Pauline's sister Dianne came from Winnipeg to visit.

In July, Ted, Jean, Nora, Autumn Kent and Paul, Theresa, Mark, Wesley Knierim travelled to Ottawa to attend a Square Dance Convention. We stayed with Stan, Mary-Anne, Alyssa, Anthony, and Alexander Kent. Following the convention, Paul, Theresa, Mark and Wesley drove to Newfoundland for a three week tour. We enjoyed camping and visiting the small coastal towns. A highlight of the tour was seeing Come from Away in Gander.

The Kent family news…

The Kent family, Ted and Jean along with their children and grandchildren camped at Shamadon Resort for a weekend in August. They were joined by Ted’s sister Sue and her husband Al as well as Ted’s brother, Grant and his wife Paula. Ted’s sisters, Mary and Joan and Joan’s husband, Mike visited.

Barrie Hill news…

Community Love And Support A surprise for Randy Parkinson for his pumpkin patch.

Pat Weir had an idea to donate something special to Randy’s wonderful pumpkin patch.

With the help of Susan Dunlop, the two of them began the project. Pat looked to Pinterest to get the ideas of pictures for Susan to paint. The 2 pieces of plywood were from Pat's house renovations. They got all the paint for free at the dump recycle depot on Watson Road! Susan's neighbour built stands for them too so they will be safe! It was a fun project for sure.

Thank you to these two talented women and their sideline helpers John Irvine and Bill Somerville!!

The Blessed Baker’s Corner…

Grilled Sand-witches 3 oz pkg cream cheese softened ¾ cup mayo/ salad dressing 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese ¼ tsp garlic powder 1/8 tsp seasoned salt 8-10 slices bread butter

Blend cream cheese and mayo until smooth. Stir in cheddar, mozzarella, garlic powder and seasoned salt. Spread mixture on half the bread slices. Add top slice to each sandwich. Butter outer sides of bread. Heat in a skillet until both sides are golden and cheese is melted.

BBQ Chicken Casserole 1 can ( 14 oz/398 ml) pork ‘n beans 4 chicken pieces (breasts or legs or thighs) ¼ cup ketchup 2 tbsp peach preserves 2 tsp instant minced onion ¼ cup soy sauce This recipe was taken from a 1950’s magazine ad for Stokely-Van Camp pork ‘n beans.

¼ cup brown sugar

Place beans in a 2 quart casserole dish.

Top with the chicken pieces.

Mix remaining ingredients and pour over the chicken and beans.

Cover and bake at 325 for 1 hour and 45 mins.
