ROCK BOTTOM TO LIFE COACH
EDWANNA BARNES SURVIVED ADDICTION AND NOW ADVOCATES FOR OTHERS Edwanna Barnes knows what it feels like to hit rock bottom. Now she is using her experiences to help others. The licensed life coach battled a drug addiction for more than 20 years before overcoming it. In those years, she nearly lost everything. The journey she is on now is about redemption and advocacy for others. Barnes lost her mother at only 3-years-old and was raised by her grandmother. By age 21 Barnes was a single mom who had trouble making ends meet. She worked as a telephone operator and also as a caregiver at a nursing home. She dabbled with drugs to heal from a broken relationship—but her desire to feel numb led to a deeper addiction. Eventually she became a booster
who would steal with the intent to sell items for money. Edwanna left her children for a neighbor to look after, but when she hadn’t returned for a longer than usual time period, the neighbor called police. Her children were taken into custody and she lost her rights. This sent her spiraling out of control. “It really hurt me but rather than get clean, I used more drugs,” she admits. For nearly two decades Edwanna was in a cycle of ridding herself of drugs and then relapsing again. While prostituting she was often raped and beat. Once she was kidnapped and prostituted out until she was able to escape. Unhappy with the life she was leading, Edwanna turned to Christ. She joined a church and dedicated
"You have to forgive yourself first." herself to the ministry. She also got married. Her husband encouraged her to get clean and to stay clean. Both she and her husband leaned on the church for support and guidance. Edwanna was able to regain custody of her children.
