By Ti'Juana "Mamarazzi" Hardwell Dizzy Wright graced the magazine cover of XXL’s 2013 Freshman Class along with Schoolboy Q, Trinidad James, Logic, and Travis Scott. He received the most fan votes in XXL history while being signed to an independent record company called Funk Volume. His musical talents allowed him to embark on several world tours before his label disbanded. He later found himself picking up the pieces of his music career and that’s when he landed a sold out world tour with Logic, allowing him to rebuild his artist brand. Since then Dizzy has taken matters into his own hands. He is gearing up for his 10th release titled “Slidin & Glidin” and an

upcoming tour, without label support.

“I’m excited to give people something positive to help them move and shift through life,” Dizzy says. “I’m giving people something they can move to.”

When he was a young child, his single mother moved him and his four siblings from Flint, Michigan to Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked as a publicist in the entertainment industry ARTICLE CONTINUES ON PAGE 4

YOUTH REPORTER Dizzy and his brother were youth reporters who interviewed artists like comedian Monique, Shaquille O'Neal, Missy Elliott and Tyrese. They had a publication called, “Just For Kids.”

BECOMING AN ARTIST As a kid, Dizzy's mother wrote raps for him. But soon, the selfadmitted "outspoken one" began writing and recording his own content.

SLIDIN & GLIDIN Dizzy is STILL MOVIN.' His new project will be released without label support. Beginning in August he will tour with Chris Webby and Futuristic.

When XXL looked to finalize their 2013 Freshman Class, a list which highlights up-and-coming artists, they allowed fans to chime in. Dizzy Wright garnered the most votes in XXL history and was included in the line-up.

and also handled concert promotion. Many weeks out of the year Dizzy’s mom traveled working with different artists and platforms like Summer Jam and the BET Awards. She even involved Dizzy and his brother by encouraging them to be youth reporters who would interview artists and ask celebrities things that young people wanted to know. They had a publication called, “Just For Kids.”

He recalls looking at the careers of other young

artists and youth reporters at the time and feeling that he too could do it. His mother was the motivation and she felt he had the ability to become a star. To support Dizzy, she became his momanger.

“She said, ‘If I write these raps for y’all, will you rap?’” Dizzy laughed and reminisced about his mother asking.

Young Dizzy wanted to write his own material for him and his brothers. His mother was taken aback by his mature content

and disagreed with his decision to stray from her management style.

“I became the rebel in the group,” he admits. “I was the outspoken one who wanted to write my own raps and my mom just didn't feel that.”

Soon the two butted heads about almost everything-music and personal. By Dizzy’s senior year in high school he moved into his own studio apartment at the age of 17 but was still adamant about graduating high school

and pursuing a music career.

“Being raised in Vegas was fast-paced,” Dizzy says. “I became a promoter in high school.”

Studio time was expensive but everything changed when Dizzy met a friend who was operating a studio out of their home.

“It kind of blew my mind because I had never seen a home studio,” said Dizzy.

Dizzy would work in home studios and smaller studios trying to make a name for himself. He supported himself and his music by working as a club promoter two weekends out of the month while still in high school.

His work paid off and he landed an audition on 106&Park’s Wild Out Wednesday segment.

“A girl who followed me on MySpace sent one of my performance videos to 106&Park without even telling me,” he said. “106&Park contacted her so she reached out to me to tell me that they said I could audition.”

Dizzy says it caught him offguard but nonetheless, he and his hype man traveled to 106&Park After the audition many months passed and he hadn’t heard anything from them.

“I was so sure they weren’t going to go with us,” he said.

“But about six to seven

months later they reached out again.”

Dizzy won. He would go on to win multiple competitions after that including the Def Jam/Shiekh Music competition which earned him an offer to sign a major record deal-which he declined. He went on to grow his social media following and fan-base. In the years that followed, he released 20 projects and has been a part of 25 international and world tours. He continues to create music, perform at shows, travel to network and develop his artistry.

When XXL looked to finalize their 2013 Freshman Class, a list which highlights up-and-

coming artists, they allowed fans to chime in. Dizzy garnered the most votes in XXL history and was included in the line-up.

“I never imagined being on that list,” he says about XXL’s Freshman Class. “It’s more pressure to get on that list than it is when you’re actually on it.”

“I had already put in so much work before making the list and so being a part of it just solidified my work,” he added.

After gracing the cover of XXL Dizzy cultivated a following of more than 350k on Twitter, 549K on Instagram and 1.2 million

through Facebook. He went on to launch his own weed strain called “Dizzy OG” which placed 2nd at the 2016 Cannabis Cup and is still sold today. He released six more strains.

Dizzy also started his own clothing line and store called “Still Movin’” located in Las Vegas near the strip. The brand will celebrate their 3rd anniversary in August 2021.

The “My Mind Keep Telling Me” music video earned more than 370k YouTube views in a week. In the video the self-proclaimed “hippy” dances around in a cannabis-growing greenhouse spreading positivity. The lyrics say: “Catch my drift my vibe/Back to the money/Let’s slide/Soon as I got back outside/My mind keep telling me n*gga don’t stop/Keep going.”

He is indeed still movin’. By the end of the year Dizzy will release two new projects titled “Slidin & Glidin” and “Dizzy Land” with DJ Hoppa. He will also tour with Chris Webby and Futuristic.

Their Full Capacity Tour kicks off on August 24. Dizzy looks forward to performing new music for fans.
