The annual All Blacks to the Nation tour saw Cody Taylor, Taylor Joe Moody, Moody Jack Goodhue and Jordie Barrett visit some of their many fans at Rolleston College and Foster Park on Thursday, August 29th.

The players answered many questions at Rolleston College learning about Joe’s love for chips and Jack who is famously known for his mullet was very taken with how impressive Rolleston College’s Max Mitchell’s Mitchell mullet was. They mixed and mingled with their fans before heading off to Foster Park where they played some rippa rugby, signed autographs and posed for photographs with the hundreds of other fans that were there to see their idols as well.

The tour is in its ninth year and is something the All Blacks really look forward to each year as it reminds them just how passionate their fans are and they love getting out and about in the community, giving something back to their awesome fans. Other members of the All Blacks met with victims of the Mosque attack while other players attended events in Whangarei, Mt Maunganui, Gisborne, and Queenstown.

Lance Corporal Samuel Puke was nineteen and at a loose end after finishing high school in Brisbane when a friend asked, “why don’t you just do what your Dad did?”

His father, Sergeant Larnie Puke, Puke had served from 19852001 in the New Zealand Army’s Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, mainly in the Reconnaissance Platoon and sniper cell of 2nd/1st Battalion at Burnham Military Camp.

That question provided all the direction Lance Corporal Puke (Tainui) needed to trade the warmth of Queensland for basic training during winter at Waiouru.

Now one of the Army’s newest Junior Non-Commissioned Officers, he has not looked back and never questioned if it was the right move. He marched out with his peers recently to mark the completion of eleven weeks of leadership training at Burnham Military Camp, and received the Regimental Award for consistently displaying the highest regimental standards on the course.

It’s a tough course, designed to transition soldiers from being effective team members who are able to get things done themselves, to being effective team leaders who are able to use the right mix of skills and behaviour to get things done through others.

Puke attended Darfield Primary School and started his intermediate education at Darfield High School. After a family move to Hamilton he attended Hamilton Boys’ High, and then after another move he completed high school in Brisbane.

He has always been passionate about general fitness and is a keen rugby player, and loves that the Army requires soldiers to maintain peak physical health.

“Getting paid to keep fit is an amazing part of the job,” he said. “After six years I still can’t believe I get paid to go to the gym.”

His military career has had many highlights, including being deployed in 2016 to Iraq for six months as part of the Force Protection Platoon.

“As a section member I ended up being the Platoon Signaller the guy who works with the radios - but within our team we all filled lots of roles and did whatever needed to be done to maintain security,” he said.

“I loved being over there and I learnt so much. It was an amazing experience.”

On his return to New Zealand, Lance Corporal Puke did a Patrol Procedures course and a six-week sniper course, then joined the prestigious Reconnaissance and Surveillance Platoon, where he is now second in command of a

Rolleston College student Ryley Griffiths has just competed in the biggest event of his life to date, the World Youth Championships in Madrid held from August 19th - 25th. Ryley was part of a New Zealand team which sent five athletes to compete: Olivia Sloan (Cadet Women’s Recurve), Finn Matheson (Cadet Men’s Recurve), Adam Niziol (Cadet Men’s Compound), Ryan Jones (Cadet Men’s) and Ryley in the Cadet Men’s. There were five hundred and eighty five athletes from sixty one countries all vying for a place at the event.

Ryley competed in the Recurve Cadet Men’s competition alongside the best sixteen and seventeen year olds in the world.

Family ties to the military are stronger than ever, with his brother, Private Josh Puke, Puke in the same Platoon, and extended family member Warrant Officer Class 1 Douglas Puke serving in the Reserve Force.

Lance Corporal Puke is looking forward to being back in the platoon at Burnham with his mates and seeing where his new leadership skills will take him next.

“What I’ve found is that if you put in the effort, nine times out of ten you’ll do well, and on the occasions where things don’t go how you expect there’s always a learning experience to help you next time,” he said.

The Thirsty Caravan is a vintage 1985 Oxford caravan, that has been lovingly transformed into a boutique poppop-up bar!

The Thirsty Caravan is a vintage 1985 Oxford caravan that has been lovingly transformed into a boutique pop-up bar and it’s reported that, she really can go anywhere! Anyone planning their wedding? Organising a party? Or celebrating an engagement? What about those up and coming corporate functions that needs that extra something special? The Thirsty Caravan can be just that!

Both owners Hannah Mentink and Brenton Connell brought the Caravan in April this year and both still work full time, seeing The Thirsty Caravan as their side venture. “We are both really busy and The Thirsty Caravan gives us something that we can do together as a couple,” Hannah and Brenton commented enthusiastically.

Hannah has her duty managers license which has been a real bonus for the pair, while Brenton adds jokily, that he has spent a fair amount of time on the other side of the bar which is almost as helpful.

Brenton is a mechanical engineer in Methven and Hannah runs a nannying business, ‘New Zealand Nannies’. The pair are excited to see where The Thirsty Caravan takes them. “We have

Nominations opened on July 19th for the triennial local body elections and at midday on August 16th they closed.

On September 20th voter packs will be mailed to electors and voting opens. Both the Malvern News and the Rolleston News will run an election feature in Malvern September 20th and in Rolleston October 2nd.

The Hobby Workshop We are nearly ready to go at the Hobby Workshop with lots of enthusiastic people who want to be involved in a number of pastimes.

It is surprising how many potential attendees want to undertake woodworking, and even more surprising that many of them are women!

The Hobby Workshop will offer a craft area within the ‘house’ and woodworking areas will be accommodated in the other buildings. Further down the track there will be space allotted to engineering pursuits.

Tutors have been arranged to instruct a variety of crafts and it’s hoped those attending will all enjoy learning something new. We’re also hopeful folk

may bring along things they’re already competent in - so that others can experience the joy that creativity brings.

Currently we are setting up a Charitable Trust, but I can’t stress enough that this venture is for you, and the whole community.

Please make yourself known, and come and have a look around. It may be just what you are looking for.

We also have great coffee, tea and eats with a relaxed time around the table for morning or afternoon tea. It’s a great opportunity to get involved now and get in on the ground floor.

Probus Clubs are established to provide friendship, fellowship and fun for retired and semi retired members of our community. There are over 1,700 clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia.

For our outing in June, fifty eight members met at The Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln for a mid-winter lunch. With three courses to consume, followed by tea or coffee, there was ample opportunity to move around and catch up with lots of friends.

As July was our birthday month, members provided plates of finger food for the morning tea.

Our speaker was Susan Henson from The Arts Centre, who gave a wonderful presentation on the post earthquake repairs and restoration. Craftsmen were brought in from the United

Kingdom to provide expertise on the stonework and the tile roof, while the opportunity was taken to install modern heating and other amenities. We will be visiting The Arts Centre in October to experience the results for ourselves.

For the outing in July, twenty four members travelled by bus to the Operatunity Concert at the La Vida Centre in Upper Riccarton. The show was Divas Through The Decades, with three male and three female singers, accompanied by a three piece band, dressing up for the various song brackets and taking us for a very nostalgic journey down a musical memory lane. The show was followed by a light lunch of sandwiches and muffins.

One of our committee members, David Bellamy, Bellamy was our mini

speaker in August. David spoke of his early life and also of his over forty years working in the facilities management side of education. He was followed by our guest speaker, Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton, Broughton who updated us on the plans in place for our fast growing community. Major items included the new library complex, redesigning the central area to make it pedestrian friendly and a new stadium in Foster Park to provide indoor courts for use all year round.

Rolleston Combined Probus (Combined just means men and women) meets at the Rolleston Community Centre on the second Tuesday of each month.

Visitors are most welcome.

Describing themselves as ‘ordinary blokes that like providing good customer service’ the Directors of ASP Machinery Limited, Phil Paul and Scott Donaldson have recently announced some additions to their popular product range. The three year old business, which began after three mates started it together (all are still involved in one capacity or another) carries a range of products to suit a diverse range of needs.

Early November will see many events organised as part of Lincoln Envirotown’s Sustainability Trail. This ‘Trail’ is aimed at giving people the chance to participate in a variety of excursions and workshops around Selwyn, all aimed at creating an awareness of sustaining our Environment.

People are asked to look out for the events and workshops which interest them and we are confident we have something for everyone! There is no limit to the number of activities one can participate in over the fortnight.

Some of the activities take the form of actual trips; for example there is a ‘Zero Waste Road Trip’ which will take people to learn about waste disposal and r e cyc l i ng p r oc e ss e s . A

‘Sustainable Wine and Food’ will take us to sample wine and food and hear about the practices of a Winery that has sustainability as a core ethic.

Those planning to attend should start thinking about taking advantage of our Repair Café and Clothes Swap. Gather household items that you would like to have repaired instead of discarding - including electric appliances; bikes; toys etc.

Rolleston Drive, near Community Centre Saturdays in September: 9am to 12 noon Rotary Club of Lincoln has a strong commitment to serving its community. At the same time, other areas requiring service, also receive much attention. International service is one of these avenues of service and the Club gives a helping hand to other countries in need of assistance.

Last year Samoa was the recipient of several laptops sent by the Club, along with stationery also sent to a school there.

Rotary believes that the word understanding is an effective way of resolving conflicts and in creating a more peaceful world.

This is one of the reasons Lincoln Club invites International postgraduate students to their meetings to make them feel welcomed in New Zealand. It has been an annual event on the Club’s calendar for more than a decade now.

On the evening of Tuesday, August 13th, the Club invited fifteen postgraduate students and their partners from Ghana, Argentina, Fiji, Switzerland, Philippines, Nepal, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Jordan, Myanmar, Costa Rica and Sri Lanka to attend. Lincoln is now a multi-cultural township and provides a great opportunity to learn about other societies first

hand. This is reflected in the Club membership with ten of the forty eight Lincoln Rotary members originally from another country.

The Rotary Club of Lincoln meets on Tuesday evenings at Lincoln University and they welcome visitors and new members.

Fifteen international postgraduate students and their partners were invited to the Lincoln Rotary Club’s meeting, welcoming them to New Zealand.

It seems that almost every aspect of farming requires a Consent or Permit. Water supply, effluent disposal, waterway realignment, earthworks and in some parts of New Zealand even fertiliser use.

Resource Consents also come with conditions that Council monitor from time to time.

Meet ing t ho se Con se nt conditions is an important part of environmental compliance requirements and avoiding consequences of noncompliance, such as fines or court cases. But what do you do if your Consent conditions are no longer practical, or you simply cannot meet them and repeatedly fail monitoring inspections? Every application that a Council processes is unique with site specific factors.

When it comes to farming, each farmer’s needs and methods of operation are different. So, it is not surprising that sometimes when setting Consent conditions Council planners may use specific wording that they consider will protect important

Consent user. For example, there may be specific weather conditions in which water monitoring is required to be carried out, and results provided to Council twice annually. What happens if those particular weather conditions only occur once in a particular year and so the farmer fails to meet monitoring requirements?

All is not lost however, as the Resource Management Act (RMA) does allow a Consent holder to seek to vary the conditions of their Consent.

Justifiable reasons need to be presented in an application made to the relevant Council.

The Consent holder is required to demonstrate that any environmental effects arising from the change in conditions will be no more than minor. This is not an opportunity for Council to reconsider if your Consent is valid. They cannot take away the Consent you already have, or the limits that already exist for your farming operations. The RMA only allows Councils to consider the effect of the proposed change.

If any neighbours, or special

to be aware that any effects on these parties from the changes to Consent conditions will be reconsidered by Council, and additional written approvals may be required to be sought. Given this, a change in conditions may not be the best solution to every Resource Consent condition issue. Nevertheless, if varying your Consent conditions means you can more practically exercise your Consent and avoid consistently failing to meet Consent monitoring requirements, it may be a process worth investing in.

Two Year 11 pupils have just become the latest history makers at Rolleston College.

Reuben Cassie and Kaitlyn Moore are the first two learners at the College to achieve their NCEA Level 1 Qualification. To achieve this so early in the year is a great achievement and Rolleston College are very proud of them both. What is particularly interesting about these two though is the nature of their achievement.

In 2106 when Reuben was interviewed prior to commencing secondary school he spoke about his passion for filmmaking and editing. This was an interest he had developed in his time at Clearview Primary and was keen to pursue.

Over the past two and a half years Reuben has been able to use Quest Projects (Passion projects supervised by AKO Learning coaches at the School - AKO: numeracy, literacy, passion projects and pastoral care), and other opportunities to continue to develop his skills in this area. To the point where he has attained Level 1 credits for some of his edited films. In other words he was able to gain NCEA acknowledgement as a result of being able to pursue his passion. The fact that he has already gained a Merit endorsement at Level 1 indicates that the quality of the work he has produced is very high.

Reuben has used this passion to springboard his success across all curriculum areas and

so his Level 1 qualification contains breadth, as well as depth, a School spokesperson reported.

“The College is very proud of Reuben he has continued to attain at school while remaining the dignified, humble young man that joined us in 2017,” commented Rolleston College’s Media Liaison, Amanda Almeida.

Kaitlyn also joined Rolleston College from Clearview in 2017.

She not only has her Level 1 but she has also just gained her Level 2, a unique achievement for a learner who is only half way through her first senior year at secondary school.

Kaitlyn has a passion for the farm and the agricultural sector.

It was obvious that school was a stepping stone toward her, already mapped, career path.

To facilitate this the School supported Kaitlyn as a dual enrolment learner, where she divided her time between her

studies and attendance at the National Trades Academy where she worked on her New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills.

“Kaitlyn has excelled on this course whilst maintaining a high level of academic success in her school based programme,” Amanda commented.

“Kaitlyn has used her personal drive and ambition to enable her to succeed at two quite different educational institutions and we are proud of her commitment and determination as she pursues her goals,” she added.

“Both of these outstanding young adults are a shining example of how learners can thrive when their learning is personalised and where they are able to pursue their passions and have their learning built around both of these concepts,” Amanda concluded.

With spring just around the corner, the thoughts of every lawn bowler will be of whites, warm, sunny days, and rolling a bowl on a pristine green. That will certainly be the hope for West Melton members because at the end of last season the decision to plane the green (this involves removing the top two inches of soil) was made. In June Ray Grigg and his team, with help from Club members and the employment of six

workers from Trade Staff, completed the work within two days. Local contractors McLenaghan’s McLenaghan kindly donated a truck, and Malcolm Calder with his front end loader made short work of the mountain of soil which was then carted away and dumped. Levelling and the sowing of Cotulla seed followed shortly after. The expectation is that the green will be ready to play on about mid-October.

Other activities over the winter

months included card and board game evenings and our annual winter golf tournament which was played at Templeton Golf Course. The winning four were John Waller, Waller Paul Williams, Williams Keith McMecking and Syd Horgan who were presented with the Mike Burke Four Penny trophy at the end of day’s play.

West Melton Bowling Club’s Opening Day will be held on September 28th, wet or fine.

New members wishing to join the Club will be made especially welcome.

On the July 17th a valued, and popular, member of our Club, Mike Burke, Burke passed away.

Always positive, a great advocate for the Club, and at all times a willing helper, he will be missed.
