On Saturday, June 15th twenty one swimmers from the Small Strokes Synchro Club set off for Invercargill to compete in the South Island Championships. It was very cold and wet and the fog in Invercargill nearly stopped us getting there!

Everyone came home with a medal and some received ribbons for figures, as well.

Our Club is growing and our standard is very competitive with other clubs in the South Island.

There were four clubs competing at the South Island Championships: Alpine (Queenstown), Aquagold (Dunedin), Small Strokes (Christchurch/Selwyn), and Phoenix (Southland).

The Selwyn Responsible Business Awards began in earnest in early June. These are run by Lincoln Envirotown with the generous support of the Selwyn District Council.

“Much work has been done on the online survey to make it a streamlined and enjoyable process and judging by the number of businesses that have already completed it, this goal has been achieved,” reported Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn project manager Lincoln Envirotown. “It is aimed at providing a thought provoking exercise which prompts businesses to examine the environmental and community engagement aspects of their practices.”

Coordinators have been appointed to visit those businesses who opt to undertake the process, to assess and discuss their surveys and grant them an appropriate award.

Awards will be presented at a big event in the latter part of October.

“This is always an enjoyable evening and a celebration of the achievements of all our Selwyn businesses,” Dave said.

“Businesses receive certificates and ‘badges’ for their media pages and stationery.”

The chance to take part in this scheme is offered to all Selwyn businesses every two years.

Over the years more than 150 businesses have participated and many improve on their award in successive periods as they implement new initiatives.

“This has been a very pleasing aspect of the project,” Dave added.

New recruits are needed for St John in order for it to be able to service communities with Selwyn Central, Darfield and Leeston currently seeking new volunteers. The Selwyn St John units are currently struggling to cover all the events in the area and really need the help of the community. “We are in desperate need of volunteers to cover community events such as sports events, concerts, field days, school events and ambulance shifts,” commented St John Central area committee chairman John Sunckell.

Scheduled for the start of August, people are welcome to join Soul Jam over the weekend in their new venue. Talks and demonstrations will run from mid morning.

The popular KidsFest holiday programme is returning to Selwyn during the July school holidays and Council’s Sport, Recreation and Wellbeing manager Dave Tippett encourages people to book their children in early for preferred events, as they often book out quickly.

“We’ve got a wide mix of events this year with new activities, along with favourites from last year. Elgregoe the Magician will be bringing his new show Amaz e, and t her e’s a Navigational Rampage mixing Rogaine and orienteering.

“We’ve also got Hip Hop classes and Sport Suzie’s Super Silly Circus Show coming back, along with popular events such as the High Ropes Challenge, Discomanias and Selwyn Kids’ Market.”

The Selwyn Aquatic Centre will be breaking out its big inflatables, paddle boats and inflatable toys and there will

also be activities at the Selwyn Libraries such as Map Making Workshops, Makerstations, House of Bricks, Intaglio Printing and other craft activities.

KidsFest has been delighting children in Selwyn, Christchurch and Waimakariri for over 25 years and families can attend events run in any

of the three areas.

Some KidsFest events are free and others are available at low cost. Booking is only required for some events.

Sunday June 9th, the Alpine Fault experienced its largest quake since 2001 prompting a GeoNet warning stating that the Alpine Fault had; “the potential for larger events and we would like to make sure that you are prepared for a large earthquake at all times”.

Should the Alpine Fault rupture further, Arthur's Pass, the main route through the Alps, would be cut off for six months as would the West Coast. While along the western edge of the Southern Alps, a great, long line spanning hundreds of kilometres, thousands of landslides would trigger instantaneously. Further south the impact on Queenstown, which could see its entire community isolated, and Otago would be huge and Milford Sound could well be ruined. The earthquake would unfurl across the South Island like a zip, dragging north-east and two minutes after it begins, it will hit Christchurch and Malvern.

There may even be reports of shaking as far as Sydney, and definitely in Wellington.

Helicopters will be crucial to the disaster management effort.

Recently, research based on a more complete earthquake

record revised the return period of a quake to 291 years. The last was in 1717, exactly 300 years ago and every year that passes pushes New Zealand further into the wrong end of that equation.

Over the last few months, emergency management officials throughout the South Island have been preparing for what to expect, and how to coordinate a response. Project AF8, indicates an 8.2 earthquake triggering near Haast. Because the Richter scale is logarithmic, the size of an 8.2 is deceptive. The energy released would be four times that of the Kaikoura earthquake, and 700 times that of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. South Island communities would definitely be cut-off.

Folk in Malvern shouldn’t be complacent and should ensure they are well-prepared. Signing up to Selwyn Gets Ready, is the first step, along with having personal supplies and arranging a safe meeting place. Much of the Island will lose power and may not have this restored for some time. Damage to the hydroelectric schemes in the lower South Island will add further strain to the power

situation. First responders will strike communication problems and could do for weeks. Being prepared is the best way to get through and this can’t be stressed enough. In areas prone to liquefaction massive amounts of this will be experienced and coastal areas may well have to evacuate because of Tsunami. While this area doesn’t have to consider that threat - once again the warning signal last weekend should encourage folk to be suitably prepared.

It wasn't until the mid-twentieth century that the Alpine Fault was discovered, by then, it was too late. Two geologists were traversing remote Westland in search of mica, a material used in electrical components; they took the opportunity to do geological mapping of the region, which had not been done before. With the trained eyes of surveyors, they saw the way the mountain faces dropped in a steep, uniform line, the way rock had eroded to form a valley like depression, and knew what that represented.

A1 Shuttle owner Ray Thomas describes his business as; his passion for driving and meeting people, drives his passion! A fitting phrase for someone who has built up his enterprise on good service and friendly customer relations.

Born in Blenheim, but living locally since 2007, Ray has spent over 45 years in the travel industry as a Consultant/ Manager/Owner and Operator and also won many awards in these roles. In 2013 he decided to semi-retire, that was until he was approached to drive a sixteen seater Special Needs Shuttle to take students to city schools. As usual, projects keep coming in and projects are being finished. The lads from the Rolleston College have nearly finished the box they are making, having been instructed on the use of a range of tools and techniques by members who have been in such trades, or have the skills to pass on.

Some minor maintenance jobs have been done for Rolleston West Primary School.

The nine service stations (without petrol dispensing) have been finished and delivered.

These were built for a firm to use for their marketing.

One of the organisations that use the Shed's premises are SeniorNet who use the meeting room every Friday morning for computer instruction. This includes Shed members there giving instruction and receiving instruction. The Shed also

provides instruction to its members on Shed days and sets up computers for members. The software used is Linux, free and reliable without the problems so often encountered with commercial software. The software that a user sees is the same as they are used to, so there are no problems with having to learn anything different. All of the donated computers came without software, the way we like them! Computers are an important part of the Shed,

finding ideas and plans, simple CAD work, printing notices and sourcing equipment.

The Shed is still collecting old car batteries for recycling and the stock is slowly growing. The Shed is open Monday, Wednesday and Saturday until mid day with the most important part of the day at 10am for a cuppa and a yarn.

Selwyn SeniorNet are affiliated to a nation-wide group assisting older memb ers of the community to get the most out of their hand held devices; cell phones, tablets and laptops, with on line support through Teamviewer.

Selwyn SeniorNet tutors are all

volunteers and in Selwyn they hold classes in Lincoln, Rolleston and Leeston with between six and twelve attendees at any one time. Their tutors take advantage of advice offered by Westpac banking staff and Noel Leeming technicians to keep them at the

forefront of technology and to enable them to then pass this on to those attending.

Friendly, knowledgeable tutors welcome everyone to their classes whether they’re a first time beginner, or want to learn how to use software such as Microsoft Office™, Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, e-mail, Gmail, on line banking, Ancestry, photo editing, or similar activities. Guests also attend to update tutors and the class on any issues that may have been encountered.

The groups have been working with photo’s and genealogy a lot recently, however Cell phones are proving to be requiring a lot of help for older people and SeniorNet tutors are experts with these.

Probus Clubs are established to provide friendship, fellowship and fun for retired and semi retired members of our community. There are over 1,700 clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia.

In April, thirty members of the Rolleston Combined Probus Club enjoyed a visit to the Christchurch Adventure Park.

The very helpful staff assisted us to board the chairlift for the ride to the top, with its sp ectac u la r vi ew s over Christchurch City and Lyttleton Harbour.

Our guest speaker in May was Geoff Griffiths from the LTSA (Land Transport) with a presentation on the improvements being made to SH1 between Templeton and Rolleston and the complex management plan to allow a flow of traffic while work continues. We were bemused by the concept of an overpass/ underpass being classified according to where the motorway runs. The bridge carrying Trents Road over the highway is referred to as Trents Road underpass because the motorway goes under it.

The outing in May was a guided tour of the new central library, Turanga. We quickly discovered the four floors provided a wide range of activities and

educational opportunities to go along with the reading facilities.

From the library, we made the short walk along Colombo Street to the new Hoyts EntX theatre complex, where we were treated to an escorted visit to three different theatres. While listening to our guide, we entertained ourselves by operating the electric seats!

From the beginning of July plastic shopping bags will need to go in the red bin - which goes to landfill, rather than in the recycling bin. “The decision to stop taking shopping bags in the recycling was a result of the dramatic fall in the number of bags, following the decision by major supermarkets and the government to phase them out,” Council Solid Waste Manager, Andrew Boyd said.

“It’s great that we’ve been seeing a drop in the number of plastic bags that have been going into bins across Selwyn since the start of the year.

We’re asking people to continue that good work and keep using

alternatives such as durable reusable bags and boxes.

“Along with using boxes or durable reusable bags, ways to reduce plastic could include wrapping your organic waste in newspaper or soiled cardboard such as pizza boxes,” Andrew commented. “Some supermarkets also deliver online shopping in brown paper bags.”

The nation-wide ban on businesses distributing singleuse plastic bags also came into effect on the same day (July 1st). Some plastic bags such as rubbish bags, small bags without handles and bags for pet waste or nappies will still be available in stores, although the Council is encouraging people to think about alternatives for these too. The Ministry for the Environment has more information about the changes on its website mfe.govt.nz, as

well as a range of information available to businesses to assist with adapting to the new legislation.

When deciding what fertiliser to put on your pasture paddocks you may not go for the cheapest available product. Rather, your product selection will be based on the quality of the results you see in grass growth and stock condition. In the same way, your choice in consultants when embarking on a project that requires expert planning, or engineering advice, can significantly alter the ultimate quality of the end product and the return on investment.

Resource consents may be required for a wide variety of projects in the modern farming environment. Working through the rules and requirements for everything from subdivision, to earthworks, waterway realignment, or the set-up for a dairy farm can be frustrating. If you are not getting the right advice on these projects you may find yourself installing unnecessary infrastructure, or paying unnecessary fees and contributions.

With rules and regulations

changing on a regular basis, understanding how to get the best result out of the need to obtain a resource consent from Council can be a minefield. Your focus is more likely to be on your farming business, rather than keeping up with every single change occurring under the Resource Management Act (among other pieces of relevant legislation). A consultant is there to guide you through this process and ensure that you are getting the best result for your needs.

Knowing that there are several ways to achieve the desired outcome is an important skill for planning and engineering consultants. Multiple different solutions may give you the same final outcome, but each will come with different time and cost implications. Having a good quality consultant guiding you during the design and resource consenting phase of your project, may reduce the overall total costs, even if the consultant costs slightly more upfront. I know of an example when our expert knowledge

about appropriate stormwater design solutions saved an applicant from installing pipe work and seeking additional unnecessary resource consents to discharge stormwater. This reduced the total project cost by thousands of dollars, and avoided time delays. Had the applicant not have sought a second opinion, he would never have known that an alternative, more cost efficient, solution existed. In this example the applicant’s savings far outweighed the consultant fees.

So, when you are next embarking on a project that requires resource consent, consider the level of investment you are planning to make in to that project, and consider how much value a good expert planner or engineer will add to that project. Much like when considering the right product to use on the farm, the best end results come from investing in good quality products at the beginning.

The Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Cross Country was held on Tuesday, May 28th at Ascot Golf Park, Christchurch.

This saw runners from school years 9 - 13 compete over distances from one to four kilometres. There was definitely fierce competition amongst competitors in fields of around fifty plus runners in each section.

Results for students placed in the top 20 from Rolleston’s Waitaha College: Para All Grades 2km: 4: Eric Russell 10:15 14: Patrick Williams 15:01 17: Mackenzie Miller 15:55.

The Canterbury Primary Schools’ Cross Country was raced on a beautiful winter's day at the Halswell Quarry on

Wednesday, June 19th. To compete at this event runners had all previously qualified through their schools’ individual cross country events, followed by zone competitions. There was a minimum of 119 runners in the Year 5/6 races (two kilometre course), with the Year 7/8 races (three kilometre course) having 185 participants per race (1353 runners competed in total).

This created challenges on course with tight bottle necks, narrow tracks and jostling for every step. However the runners took it in their stride and gave it their all with smiles on their faces, it was reported.

Top ten qualifiers are now eligible to go to the South Island Competition to be

held in Hanmer.

A duck walks into a pub, orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich. The barman looks at him and says, "Hang on! You're a duck." "I see your eyes are working," replies the duck. "And you can talk!" exclaims the barman. "I see your ears are working, too," says the duck. "Now if you don't mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?"

"Certainly, sorry about that," says the barman as he pulls the duck's pint.

"It's just we don't get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing round this way?"

"I'm working on the building site across the road," explains the duck. "I'm a plasterer."

The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it.

So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves. The same thing happens for two weeks. Then one day the circus comes to town. The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him, "You're with the circus, aren't you? Well, I know this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!"

"Sounds marvellous," says the ringmaster, handing over his business card.

"Get him to give me a call." So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says, "Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money."

"I'm always looking for the next job," says the duck. "Where is it?" "At the circus," says the barman. "The circus?" repeats the duck. "That's right," replies the barman. "The circus?" the duck asks again. "With the big tent?" "Yeah," the barman replies. "With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?" says the duck. "Of course," the barman replies. "And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?" persists the duck. "That's right!" says the barman. The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says .. . . "What the heck would they want with a plasterer??!”
