CentreStage Rolleston has just wrapped up their debut season of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor

Dreamcoat and they couldn’t be happier.

The show was attended by 1,600 people from in and

will be on stage in July 2019.

The cast of eighty was joined by a band and production crew that saw over 120 people involved in staging the Show. Performed at the Rolleston Primary School, viewers really felt part of the production with the unique Hall layout allowing the audience to see all facets of the Show. CentreStage had a vision of bringing a community together to share in the love of performing arts and they certainly felt they achieved that. They are now convinced they will be able to build on this success and continue.

OpRide 2018 saw veterans and severely injured soldiers from New Zealand, United Kingdom (two teams) and Canada cycle the length of New Zealand from October, 27th to November, 17th. Participants used specialist recumbent tandem cycles to cover the distance from the southern tip of New Zealand Motupohue Scenic Reserve in Bluff to Cape Reinga a distance of 1,521miles or 2,500km. This ride was used to help with the recovery of injured soldiers and veterans with the aim of physically and mentally challenge their bodies, to help encourage awareness, and to show no matter what the illness, injury, aliment these inspirational soldiers and veterans can do anything they put their minds to.

New Zealand's team consisted of Selwyn’s Amy Baynes (captain), rear rider, Dave Benfell, Benfell front rider, Bill Blaikie, rear rider, Dion Ngawiki Taka (Selwyn) front or rear rider, Gary Brandon, Brandon front or rear rider and Bruce Blackburn, Blackburn (Selwyn) support person and possible rear rider.

The New Zealand team travelled roughly 120-150km per day on their journey. The Team didn’t encounter many lows or setbacks on this journey and any issues that cropped up were soon taken care of with some well thought out solutions.

There were many highlights both for the team and individually. Amy commented proudly that some of her highlights were, seeing the self growth in the riders (especially her kiwi team) as they achieved

their individual daily goals, the self confidence and self belief as each day progressed, also when each hill was climbed, and when the team reached the final and finishing points after their biggest days of hill climbs.

The New Zealand team received endless amounts of support from fellow New Zealanders along their journey, also the RSA, New Zealand Defence Force, via their Facebook page (Operation Ride 2018). “It was the hospitality of our nation which made me so proud. I asked for support via my Facebook page and the nation answered,” Amy added. It was reported that the kiwi team spirit was phenomenal, they helped and supported each other through this long and challenging journey.

Amy has now been given the opportunity to take the lead on a new venture linked to the charity that ran this event. She

They visited Richard Spark’s Museum where after a homemade morning tea they reminisced about so many things familiar to them and their grandparents in days gone by, plus a few generations before. The huge collection (started with school milk bottles) has articles from inside people’s homes and outside, factories, farms,

This was an amazing journey for these soldiers and veterans, so many memories and friendships were made. The next OpRide will be held in 2020, in either Canada or Australia.

In the afternoon the group went to North Loburn and saw the whole process of stained glass

window making mostly for churches in New Zealand. There was one for a lady’s private house. “A process I suspect very few people see; patience and artistic skills are needed for this very interesting work,” commented Rolleston Combined Probus Publicity Officer, Valerie Watson.

The 2018 Invictus Games were held in Sydney from October, 20th-27th. New Zealand had twenty five competitors attend this competition. Six of these competitors hailed from Canterbury, Grant Philip from (Oxford), Gareth Pratt (cocaptain, Christchurch) along with George Nepata, Nepata Jules Bramley, Bramley Vanessa BowdenBowdenPere and Kora Hati all from Rolleston.

The Games, are the only international adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and ill, active duty and formermilitary service members. The Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support

rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for the men and women who have served their country.

This year saw five hundred competitors involved from eighteen allied nations in eleven different adaptive sports.

George Napata has been a tetraplegic since the age of twenty two after suffering a spinal injury in 1989 during training in Singapore. He was encouraged by his family to compete in the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Invictus Games team, alongside his brother Damien Napata, who was also injured while serving in the NZDF. George competed in wheelchair rugby and he was

the only team member fully dependent on a wheelchair. He competed in all of the five games. George enjoyed a rather special moment during the game against Australia, when both sides combined to ensure he scored a try. George’s Invictus Games was topped off by another life changing experience when he was awarded the ‘Exceptional Performance of the Games Award’. This award recognized his tremendous contribution to the NZDF wheelchair rugby team. “It was something I never expected and just came out of the blue. It was just an awesome atmosphere going through the crowd, and other

competitors just shaking their hands, high fiving and clapping.

It was just an overwhelming and humbling experience,” George commented.

New Zealand won one gold medal, in the 1500m and one bronze medal in shot put at the Games.

On Saturday, November 24th and in spite of heavy rain, the Prebbleton Crafts and More Market took place. Fortunately everything for the Market takes place indoors making for a dry, warm and pleasant place to browse and shop.

“The Market went very well,” said event organiser Trish Clothier.

Pallets, are those wooden trays that most things we buy, travel on at some time in their life. The Shed use them for projects and one of those is planter boxes.

The sea kayak is nearing completion, some members are m a k i n g t oy s f or t h e i r grandchildren for Christmas and various pieces of furniture are always being renovated.

The Rolleston Toy Library committee didn’t let the small matter of some unseasonable weather spoil their first community fundraising event on Saturday, November 24th.

The Toy Drive and Car Boot Sale had been in the planning stage for the past few weeks.

The event was intended both as a fundraiser, and as a c o mm u n i ty e n g ag e m e n t exercise. “We want the Toy Library to be seen as a valuable resource for our local families, so the best way to achieve that is to get out amongst the community and spread the word,” said Toy Library Commun ications Coordinator, Michelle Sim. Sim “Of course, nothing happens without money, so this was our first initiative to start raising the funds we need to turn the vision into reality.”

Support for the venture was encouraging, with around 25 people booking spaces for the Car Boot Sale, and others keen to donate toys. Several community groups also got involved by donating time or resources, including, ‘The Sling Lady’ offering free babycarrying advice, a team from ANZ bank who ran a sausage sizzle, and the local Ray White Real Estate office, who offered the use of a gazebo. Rolleston College not only gave the group the use of their car park for the event, but also had a class of students helping

With steady drizzle on the day, it was very much ‘touch and go’ as to whether or not to proceed. “So much effort had gone in to planning the day, nobody wanted to pull the pin unless we absolutely had to,” Michelle explained.

With some breaks in the rain and support from eager stallholders, the group made the decision to carry on and make the best of it. While some stallholders had to pull out, there were still a dozen selling their wares to passers-by everything from home-made crafts, jams and preserves, to household goods, and children’s clothing and toys.

With local coffee vendor, ‘The Coffee Lady’ and the ANZ sausage sizzle keeping everyone supplied with hot food and drinks, there was a

general ‘good-natured, positive vibe’ from all who attended.

While the weather may have prevented the event from being quite as big as it had been hoped, the Toy Library committee are still claiming it as a success.

“Not only did we raise nearly $500, which is an excellent start, but we were able to begin connecting with the community,” Michelle said. “We want to thank everyone who pledged their support, we really appreciate it.”

The group are hoping to run another similar event next year, but in the meantime are pursuing further fundraising opportunities, as well as continuing the search for suitable premises.

So the Official Cash Rate has remained unchanged at 1.75%, and is expected to stay that way through 2019 and into 2020, according to the press release.

So what does this mean to you? Make 2019 your year to pay off that debt! Pretend the rate has just increased to 8%. It wasn’t that long ago that that this was the case. If you have a mortgage of $200,000 fixed at 4.20%, you will be paying roughly $230 per week over thirty years. Now make your repayments at 8% and put away $340 a week - you could potentially save over $70k in interest and reduce your loan to sixteen years!! Rolleston’s new library and community centre will be known as Te Ara Ātea - after the name was formally gifted to Selwyn District Council by Te Taumutu Rūnanga.

T h e n a m e m e a n s ‘t h e unobstructed trail to the world and beyond’ and reflects the role of the new facility as a place for learning, gathering, connecting, exploring and celebrating the district’s heritage and people.

The new library and community centre is a landmark project in the proposed Rolleston town centre, centred on what is currently part of Rolleston Reserve. Construction of Te Ara Ātea is expected to start in mid2019.

“It is with great pleasure that Te Taumutu Rūnanga gifts the name of Te Ara Ātea to the new Rolleston Library and Community

“We’re privileged that the rūnanga has gifted the name Te Ara Ātea - which is so appropriate for a community facility where we will celebrate our history but also look confidently to the future.

“The idea of exploring, challenging and finding different pathways to learning and discovery is exactly what this community space is about.”

Anyone who has successfully obtained a resource consent will be aware that approval from your local authority comes with specific conditions as to how you go about your activity.

These conditions can be very straight forward and very easy to comply with. Others however can be more involved and complicated. There are limits as to the type of conditions district and regional councils can place on a resource consent, and if you are not happy with the conditions you can go back to your Council and seek that they are amended.

The Resource Management Act sets out that conditions on resource consents can be imposed. Over the years, through environment court decisions, legal principles have been developed which now dictate how conditions should be imposed on resource consents. For instance, it is important that conditions are certain. Any condition needs to be worded so that the requirement of the condition is clear to understand. This ensures that there is no confusion as to how a condition is complied with. If you receive a resource consent condition which you simply do not

the consent as to what is meant. Wherever possible you should seek that conditions are made clear, to avoid doubt as to how you are required to meet them.

Consent conditions need to be for a resource management purpose and relevant to the resource consent they are issued under. Councils are not meant to try to get a consent holder to carry out something unrelated to the actual activity resource consent is being sought for. By way of example, if consent is sought for the installation of a culvert through a stream, council should not be requiring that you carry out stream alignment works at another part of the stream, unless it is specifically related to the installation of the culvert.

It is important that consent conditions are between the consent holder and the Council as the consent authority. A consent holder should not have to get secondary approval from another party to ensure they meet the requirements of their resource consent. This might be the approval of a different organisation or group, or even the secondary approval of a different part of the Council (i.e. the engineering team). If a consent holder is unable to get

their consent, making the consent pointless. It is more appropriate to have the details needed to draft certain consent conditions prior to the issuing of the consent or require that the consent holder provide information with certification that it meets particular standards, such as prescribed engineering standards.

So, what do you do if your Council issues you with a resource consent containing conditions that are not clear, or practical, or that require you to carry out unrelated works or seek a third-party approval?

The track was in great condition despite the wet weather lately. The weather did contribute to a lower than average attendance but all that attended enjoyed a great day

out with lots of fun and great racing. There were some good dividends paid on the TAB and it was great to see some young talented drivers having success on the course. Santa made a welcome appearance and handed out lollies to all the excited children as he drove down the straight on the back of the Ute, this was a highlight for many children.

Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to gather together with family and friends we love.

It’s a time when life often slows a little and we are able to take stock of the year that has been and look forward to the things to come.

For some of us this Christmas, we welcome new members into our family through birth or marriage. For others of us Christmas will be tinged with sadness as we remember those who have been lost to us this year.

This Christmas Liz’s family are joining us in Darfield for a few nights which will be nice. I’m also looking forward to the Boxing Day cricket test, swimming in the Waimakariri and spending time with Liz and Elliott.

Remember to cherish those who I can’t believe I’m wri ng this, with only three weeks to go ll Christmas, how did that happen? Due to the weather condi ons, most of you will have no ced the fly popula on is very low. But be aware, as soon as we get some sun and heat, things will go mad!

Some of the ways to keep them away are: • If you have dogs pick up their faeces regularly.

• Wash your rubbish bins regularly during the summer season.

• Barbecues are normally close to the house, so make sure you keep them clean and clean-up any spills, as well as the fat tray.

While families are away on their Christmas holidays it’s a great me to have your home treated on the inside for flies and whitetails. The house is empty and there’s no food out.

Advent gives us space for hope: The Christmas season is the time many of us get busy thinking about presents, family, friends, travel and more. We dust off the decorations, maybe put up a tree, write last -minute Christmas cards and even have moments to remember the best-ever presents we got as children. Yet, in all of the bustle it becomes too easy to lose sight of what the preparations are meant for and to forget who it is we are getting ready to greet.

During this busy time the church offers us the season of Advent as a time of preparation and expectation for the coming of Christ, the time before celebrating the ‘joy to the world’ Jesus with us.

The word ‘Advent’ comes from the Latin adventus, which means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’. In advance of a celebratory Christmas season that follows Advent, we often take time to reflect on the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love, which gets us ready for a world that Christ has entered. For generations God’s faithful people remember the story of what God has done and look toward where God is going.

Hope begins the Advent season on December 2nd. Hope in a world full of challenges is found in Jesus because he conquered sin and death rising in new life. “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except by me,” Jesus told his closest friends in John 14:6. This Advent, God is offering hope found in Jesus to every nation of the world where the gospel is proclaimed!

Peace is the deep desire of every human heart, and Jesus alone brings true peace! “My peace I give you. Not as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, do not be afraid. … In this world you will have trouble but take heart, I have overcome the world!” (John 14:27, 16:33) Praise God that he will bring his peace to troubled hearts worldwide this Advent season!

Joy comes upon us unexpectedly. It jumps out at us from behind sunsets, peeks out in the smile of a stranger, and takes hold in a child’s laughter. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit biologist and philosopher, once wrote, “Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of God.” Advent is not only a time when we hope for the coming of Christ in great history-changing events. It is also a time where we hope for little moments of joy, and invite God to use us as instruments of joy for the world. Jesus promised: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love… I have told you this so that my joy may be in you” (John 15:9, 11; NIV).

In the fourth century, Saint Augustine wrote, “what does love look like?” It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of the people.” Advent gives us space to step back and love. By taking the focus off ourselves we are able to see the needs of others. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” (John 3:16, NIV). God is showing his love in powerful ways this Advent season.

Christmas is upon us again and brings another, fairly-frantic, trading year, to a close. On reflection costs seem to have escalated leaving many small businesses with considerably lower profits than previously and, in some cases, just no work. We continue to be so, so appreciative of the community’s support for the News and really feel for those we’ve spoken to who are struggling a little at the moment. It is to be hoped this state of affairs is only a temporary cyclic glitch and business confidence will return in the New Year.

We are aware that without the continued backing of our advertisers we couldn’t publish the News each week/month, we are extremely grateful for this and thank you all so much. Some of our advertisers have been with us since day one and many others are close to that milestone. We are aware that a social media/online presence is impacting on print media, but it would appear we are doing something right by identifying our market and retaining our ‘community newspaper’ feel.

Printing the News is a pretty laborious task that takes a couple of days each week to complete - it’s seldom without its dramas and that’s before we add the occasional delivery hiccup into the mix. You’d never know Darfield was so close to its distribution points when you look at the circuitous route the newspapers take to get to their destinations!

We send out close to 6,000 copies each week of the Malvern News and just over 6,000 copies each month of the Rolleston News. Thanks to our much appreciated deliverers and contractors, who seldom slipup with getting the News into readers’ mailboxes.

We love bringing community stories to the community and love receiving contributions and tip-offs enabling us to do so.

Our team work hard to try and get everything right and while that doesn’t always happen (we’re only human) be assured it is never intentional. Chevonn Walker (Advertising Assistant) is the face at the front desk, while Lucinda Jarvis is our new Editorial Assistant (you will have read stories with her byline recently in the News) - Lucinda also takes care of the printing and packing of each edition too.

The office will close at midday December 20th and reopen 9am January 14th 2018.

We’re all looking forward to a break over Christmas and a chance to recharge and hopefully enjoy some summer weather.

Do please send us in any holiday snaps (humourous is good - embarrassing perhaps not so!) or newsworthy items that could be suitable for publishing in the New Year.

Over sixty events are coming to the district as part of the Summer in Selwyn event programme, kicking off in December and continuing until late March.

Selwyn residents will receive the Summer in Selwyn events guide in the mail this week.

There is something for everyone to enjoy this summer in Selwyn. Council-run events include two outdoor movies at Lincoln and Leeston and two drive-in movies at Rolleston and Darfield, starting with the Christmas classic movie Elf on December 16th.

Council Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett said there is something for everyone to enjoy this summer in Selwyn. “Summer events are fun for the whole family and help make Selwyn a great place to live by connecting people to their community,” he added.

“We are proud to present a fantastic line up again this summer, with a great range of community-organised events on offer as well.”

Pool Parties will include a special Christmas Pool Party at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, as well as events at the community pools in Darfield, Southbridge and, for the first time, Sheffield. The ever popular Teddy Bears’ Picnic will return to Rolleston Community Centre and Rolleston Reserve jam-packed with family fun.

Picnic in the Park events and Summer Skate/Scooter Jams are coming to eight locations around the district, while a new event - Summer 3X3 Basketball Jam – encourages anyone to jump into a game and have a go.

Other entertainment includes live music at local parks with A Month of Sundays in February.

Residents can bring a picnic and relax while listening to an outstanding line-up of our local talented musicians at the Lincoln Green.
