On June 27th (the postponement day due to inclement weather and ground conditions on the original date) hundreds of qualifying pupils took part in the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Cross Country Championships, held at the Halswell Quarry.

Congratulations go to all those from Selwyn who competed and achieved personal bests. Special congratulations go to Eden Innes of Rolleston School who came in at first place in the Year 5 girls race with a time of 8:22.2 and Hayley Maxwell of Waitaha School in the Athletes with a Disability, years 5 and 6 section, who came in at second place with a time of 8:32.8.

All those in the first ten places of this event can now compete at Rabbit Island, Nelson during September as members of the Canterbury Cross Country Team. Before then though, there is extensive training to be undertaken before the runners compete in the Inter Regional event against teams from throughout the South Island.

Eden’s parents Kyle and Shayna Innes were understandably very pleased with and proud of their daughter’s result. Shayna commented that Eden hadn’t done any training prior to the event, but as a keen Hockey player she does get plenty of running practise on the turf.

Eden meanwhile commented that the win felt amazing and while she had been a bit tired when she started, she was super excited by the time she finished!

Eden won her Year 5 Girls section against 124 runners. whether she would attend the Champs in Nelson, however Eden did think a family holiday was in order, so it was very likely!

Thursday, June 28th was the culmination of two years hard work and administration, for members of numerous Canterbury Lions Clubs, when they presented a cheque for $180,000 to St John, Rolleston.

John Sunckell Chairman of Selwyn St John and speaking for the organisation said they were absolutely delighted with the Lions’ effort, which would greatly assist their ability to provide good service. They will endeavour to have a new ambulance ready to be consecrated at a special service to be held in Christchurch, this September. This will show the Lions’ emblem, plus acknowledge contributing Trusts and Clubs.

for Zone 8 Lions, said that six Clubs covering the surrounding areas of Ellesmere, Malvern, Rolleston, Selwyn, Halswell and Ch-Ch Chinese Lions, had worked hard for the two years to raise over $70 000. Three hundred members put in approximately 3,500 hours, parking cars, selling pea straw, take-a-ways at Field days etc, catering for special events, running bowling and bridge tournaments, selling firewood and numerous other events, to raise the funds.

A grant was obtained from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), in Chicago for $90,000., which ensured the success of the project. LCIF has also donated over $1 million to Christchurch City to replace

Community facilities destroyed in two major earthquakes. The Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust, in New Zealand also contributed.

Westland Dairy Company, with local Dairy Farmer Peter Morrison as Chairman of Directors contributed $4000., demonstrating their commitment to community needs and to the Health and Safety of employees.

Bill said it was extremely satisfying to know the Ambulance would soon be ‘On the Road’, and thanked everyone who had been involved with the Project. “This fits our Lions’ motto of ‘We Serve’, perfectly,” he concluded.

FACIAL OILS FOR WINTER Facial oils often get a bad rap, clients fear greasy skin and breakouts. But facial oils can definitely be a winter essential for dry, or maturing skin, and of course skins that are constantly being exposed to hot, then cold, frequently during the day.

Creamy serums and moisturisers dominate our routines, but in winter, oils are going to be a revelation. It’s best to avoid any oils which are mineral oil based, or full of cheap carrier oils, as these will block the skin and lead to the dreaded breakout.

So versatile is the facial oil that it can be used on its own after your usual moisturiser, or add a few drops to your moisturiser. 14 year old, Rolleston youth, Elijah Ligaliga was awarded a top prize; ‘Overall Merit Award’ at a recent Blue Light Life Skills Camp held at the Burnham Defence Force from June 11th to 15th.

Elijah beat a strong group of young people from around New Zealand to take the prize on the week long residential course.

Blue Light Life Skills Coordinator Kayla Murphy said, “Elijah was presented with the ‘Overall Merit Award’ as camp staff felt he had achieved significant and consistent improvement in attitude, selfdiscipline, self-confidence, team work and was always respectful to staff and fellow course members.”

The programme is run by New Ze a l an d Bl u e L igh t in partnership with the New

Zealand Police and New Zealand Defence Force. The programme provides fourteen to seventeen year olds with a residential based course delivering quality life-skills and leadership training.

It specialises in building selfrespect, respect for others, working within boundaries, selfcare, team work and problem solving. Up to twelve such courses are held around New Zealand each year, in Auckland, Taupo, Wellington and Christchurch.

Blue Light is a registered charity and community policing youth programme. For the past thirty years it has run programmes and activities for youth throughout New Zealand, free from drugs, alcohol and violence and has a strong vision of empowering youth.

All Blue Light programmes and activities are designed to; reduce the incidence of young people being an offender or victim of crime and to encourage better relations between young people, their parents, the police and communities they live in.

Blue Light originally began in Australia as a community policing initiative and remains very strong in all of the Australian States. It is now active in the Solomon Islands, East Timor, Cook Islands, New Zealand and Scotland.

Rachael Knight Clinical Dental Technician Recently local nineteen year-old Rolleston performer Caelan Thomas attended the Musical Theatre New Zealand (MTNZ) Conference in Nelson on behalf of Kirwee Players.

While in attendance he was announced as the winner of the Music Theatre International Australasia (MTIA) Nola Speir Patron's NextGen Encouragement Award 2017.

“This is a prestigious award, and those who have won it in the past have gone on to be involved at a very high level within performing arts,” Courtney Hyde, Hyde a member of Kirwee Players explained.

“I was totally shocked when I won the award, I wasn't aware I'd even been nominated,” an enthusiastic Caelan said.

Social Enterprise is a new way of thinking about business that combines making profit while acting for purpose. Selwyn Social Enterprises (SSE) is in the early stages of acting as a network of like minded people who want to promote the concept in the Selwyn region.

“A community operated cinema in Rolleston is the first big project we have taken on developing,” SSE spokesperson, Steven Moe explained. “It is one example of an initiative which we hope will work; but we are also optimistic that other ideas will come to the surface as well, that can also be encouraged.

When asked why a cinema, the answer was easy for Steven, “I’ve got four young children and they’re all pre-teenage age, and when I looked at Selwyn, there’s not that much infrastructure for things teenagers and young people like to do. So I thought a cinema would be a great idea, little did I know that the Council also had the same idea,” Steven explained with a laugh.

Steven, grew up in Christchurch and moved to the Selwyn district in 2016 with his family after spending eleven years overseas. As a lawyer he had some experience with social enterprising.

Working alongside Steven and helping to set up and lead SSE is Andrew Fleck who moved to Rolleston in 2008 with his family and is a Marine Health and Safety specialist.

SSE has 600 members in their closed Facebook group and it is thanks to the members’ support, feedback and ideas that Steven and Andrew made their suggestion to the Selwyn District Council. Their concept is to operate the new proposed cinema as a not-for-profit company, with the vast majority of the dividends being returned to community projects .

“The idea is that the Council will

build the shell of the cinema and will look for an operator for it. The SSE concept is that a charitable trust operates a viable business with a robust business plan, and returns the majority of the profits back into a range of community projects,” Steven explained.

Though the cinema is only in the design stage with no clear timeframe for construction, SSE is planning the way forward.

One member of the team is the owner of the Hollywood Cinema in Sumner, “he brings a vast wealth of experience about how these ventures run and we will be drawing on his experience,” Steven said.

“Private investors, who will own a stake in the company, will be needed to raise initial funds to fit out the cinema, the rest will be owned by the charitable trust.

“Since first raising the idea to the community we have been encouraged by the support for the idea - everyone agrees the concept is a great one. Now we need more individuals in the community to step forward and offer to help out, be it big or small. We welcome engagement with others who are on the same page as us and want to pursue similar types of initiatives.”

There are various ways for the Selwyn community to get involved; including joining the SSE and Selwyn Cinema Facebook pages and by getting in contact with the group and sharing experiences and ideas.

“The point of SSE is to harness the power of our community, to think beyond individual profit making and instead think more broadly of our overall community,” Steven concluded.

This is not the case for one of our Probus Club members, Pauline Wilson, who this month gave a mini-talk about the anticipation she has when approaching her mailbox.

Pauline is a member of Postcrossing which is an international group of people who exchange postcards with folk all over the world.

The idea is an easy one, for each postcard you send, you will receive one back from a random Postcrosser, from somewhere in the world, turning mailboxes into surprise boxes!

The group heard about all the various places Pauline has received cards from. She also brought along and shared with us a few of the postcards of particular interest from this unusual hobby.

Also this month to lift our spirits on the dull dreary days we’ve been experiencing, some Probus members have joined together for a day at the movies and lunch. A wonderful activity to do for the day at this time of the year.

It’s Soul Jam time again! Soul Jam Holistic, Health and Spiritual Expo returns to the West Melton Community Centre on Sunday, July 8th.

“Please note we are running one day only this year, due to the on-going construction work on the new West Melton Community Centre, so plan your weekend well to include the Expo,” enthused event organiser Sue Jones!

Jones The Expo is now a well-known event in the district, being anticipated with great interest not only throughout Selwyn, but also much further afield.

Soul Jam brings together a variety of professional Holistic and Spiritual practitioners sharing their knowledge, wisdom, and products to assist visitors in exploring options for well-being and great health, plus personal and spiritual growth and awareness.

“The number of wonderful practitioners in the district continues to grow, and we are pleased to introduce you to a variety of modalities from Bowen Therapy and Emotional Freedom through Mediumship, Mindfulness and Reiki to Fairies, and everything in between,” Sue added.

The majority of practitioners at Soul Jam are living and working within the Selwyn District, but there are a few special guests bringing their unique talents, including Alice with her wonderful herbal teas (made from her own medicinal herb garden), Sonya sharing her amazing angel readings and Soul Jam’s great friends from the Crystal People shop (also well-known from the Body, Mind, Spirit Festival).

proven modalities, meet the people practising them and make contact with like-minded people,” Sue said. “Despite the variety on offer please remember there are more practitioners out there, and if you are looking for something not at the Expo there will be someone there who can point you in the right direction.”

The UC Education Mud Run was begun in June 2011 after the earthquakes damaged, or destroyed, many of the sporting facilities and recreation areas in Canterbury. Organisers recognised that there was a risk of lack of participation in the Province’s youth. “We saw an opportunity, through a different kind of event, to reach out to secondary school students and motivate them to set a goal,” Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon explained.

During the run students had an opportunity to clamber through cold muddy sludge, run through creeks and crawl tunnels. The students end the race with mud caking their body from head to toe, cold and wet, but generally with a huge smile.

Each year, there is the ‘Best Dressed Parade’ with up to 250 teams of students lining up before the race to showcase their crazy costumes for a shot at the title.

Rolleston College had five teams entered. The Winter Warriors were eager and full of energy, applying face paint and getting right into the action during the warm up. The Sexy Chills worked hard and competitively, coming in as the first team for Rolleston College. Mad Cow Disease showed determination and dedication by sticking together.

“It was wonderful to see the support from all the groups,” said a College spokesperson.

The Pack helped to motivate each other through thick and thin. The Snorkel Ballerinas persevered through the slimy algae, making it to the final task of sliding down the poles and running to the end. There were slips, falls, cries of, "wait for me" and "I can't run any more".

However, all teams completed all obstacles, crossing the finish line holding hands with smiling faces.

Wow, what a busy month the children have had at The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool & Nursery Rolleston!

They were fortunate to have had a visit from the SPCA Christchurch as part of the education programme that they offer for preschoolers.

Kelsey and Cupcake the beautiful fluffy rabbit gave everyone a fun, interactive presentation on the basics of animal care, the similarities between animal and human emotions, and encouraging empathy towards animals.

The SPCA left grateful for the towels, sheets, blankets and food kindly donated by Preschool families.

The next event on The Cat’s Pyjamas’ calendar was a Grandparents and whānau morning tea to celebrate Matariki (a star cluster that rises, signalling the beginning of the Maori New Year). “It was wonderful to have so many of the children’s extended families join them for this special celebration,” owner Tracy Summerfield said.

Rounding off the month, The Cat’s Pyjamas invited Paula from St John Ambulance to come into the Prep School with her little ambulance called Ambi.

Paula talked to the children about emergency vehicles and what they do. She also introduced the children to the equipment that can be found inside an ambulance and what kind of clothing the ambulance crew need to wear.

“The children loved being able to dress up in paramedic gear and practice using the bandages,” Tracy said with a smile. “Their favourite part though was at the end of the discussion when Paula put on Ambi’s siren and lights.”

Through this experience the children are learning about the role of emergency services in the community and what the paramedics do as part of their job. The children thank all their guests for visiting them!

On Friday, June 22nd Selwyn MP Amy Adams hosted an afternoon tea at the Rolleston Community Centre as part of Volunteer Week 2018. Amy chatted with the volunteers and thanked them for the important role they play in their communities. The event was attended by 36 volunteers including representatives from the Rolleston Day Club, Selwyn Central Community Care (SCC), the Lincoln and Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigades and St John Selwyn Central.

The past year has been a dynamic one for the Ellesmere Big Band with a number of changes and additions to their line-up and a variety of new music and new performance opportunities.

Band players come from across Selwyn, including Darfield, West Melton, Lincoln, Leeston, Dunsandel, Prebbleton and Burnham Army Camp, as well as further afield.

Matt Davies was appointed as Musical Director at the beginning of 2017 when Riwai Hina moved to Wellington to pursue further musical studies.

Matt brings a wealth of experience as a professional jazz musician, multiinstrumentalist, arranger and music teacher and is imparting his knowledge in a manner that is yielding great results!

Although the Band’s hall and Tuesday night practices are based in Leeston they play regularly for various Ellesmere community events, as well as at venues across the Selwyn and Christchurch districts.

Bookings in the last year have included the Christchurch Swing Dancing Festival, social dancing nights, a corporate function for Ryman Healthcare at the Christchurch Airforce Museum, the Christchurch Folk Club and the annual Christchurch Big Band Festival. In addition to these, they have also played at regular local community events such as ANZAC Day, the Ellesmere A & P Show, the Leeston Fete and the Lincoln

Christmas Parade.

The Band has welcomed numerous new members over the last year including: Nicole and Gary Garner (Vocals and Sound), Graeme Bellamy (Tenor Sax), Tim Nees (Alto Sax), Amanda Hawke (Alto Sax), Janet Carter (Trombone), Charles Breurkes (Rhythm Guitar), and Ethan Trethewey (Tenor Sax).

The Band has also seen the return of Dave Neil (Trumpet) after a break of some years.

Dave is currently one of the longest serving members of the big band and has been playing

in the district for the last forty years!

The band has been performing in Canterbury since 1902 and is enjoying a full and vibrant sound with the recent increase in players.

“With around twenty musicians playing catchy swing and jazz favourites, it’s entertainment that really makes a lasting impression,” said a Band spokesperson.

KidsFest is returning to Selwyn for the July school holidays, with bookings now open.

Around seventy events will be held in Selwyn as part of KidsFest between July 7th and 21st.

Selwyn District Council’s Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett, Tippett said KidsFest, which has been running for over 25 years, has a wide variety of exciting events and activities for children in the upcoming winter school holidays.

“This year we’ve got some new events such as Explore Parkour, and Sport Suzie’s Super Silly

Circus Show, but we’ve also got some favourites from last year such as High Ropes Challenge, Selwyn Kids’ Market, and fun water activities at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre with aqua volleyball and handball, inflatables and paddleboats.

The Selwyn Libraries are also hosting a range of activities including Map It, Kahuna Kidsongs and Game On,” he said.

Local KidsFest events are organised by Selwyn community groups, the Council, local businesses and facilities; last year they were attended by over

1,200 children.

Some KidsFest events are free, while others are available at low cost, however bookings are required for certain events.

Selwyn families can also attend events in Christchurch and Waimakariri.

On Wednesday, June 13th, students from local primary schools competed in the Canterbury Artistic Gymnastic Competition.

These were followed by the Canterbury Rhythmic Gymnastic Competitions on Monday, June 18th.

Selwyn District joined hundreds of others from around Canterbury to compete and do their best.

Rolleston Primary School had a good number of children attending the events, with eight of their students achieving a place in the top ten at their different levels.

who came home with placings in the top three were, Kera Dunnage coming in with firsts from both events and Mia Morriss who returned with a second in the rope competition.

Tamzin Taylor and Hazel Harvey from West Rolleston Primary School also took part in the gymnastic competitions, both girls came back with placings in the top three.

Clearview students competed at grade two, iron, silver and gold levels. Alyssa Harrison and Samantha Harrison returned to school with first and seconds while Clearview’s Gold team came in first.

Voting is now open for the new People’s Choice Award as part of this year’s Selwyn Awards.

The Selwyn Awards are held every two years, and seek to recognise individuals and organisations for outstanding work or inspirational achievements.

All nominees in all categories of the 2018 awards are eligible for the People's Choice Award which will be decided entirely by online public vote.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said this is an opportunity for the community to get even more involved in the awards.

“This is the first time in the history of the Selwyn Awards that this option has been included,” he said.

“I’m excited that the public has

the opportunity to have their say on who they think is deserving in our community.”

The Selwyn Awards will be recognised at a Gala Dinner at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday, August 4th, where all nominees will be celebrated and the winners in each of the ten categories, including People’s Choice, will be announced.

Another month of activity at the Rolleston Men’s Shed has just concluded. The woodwork shed's exterior has now been finished and the interior is being worked on.

The lining is going up and most importantly the work benches are being made and fitted around the walls, to achieve the maximum work space possible.

Machines, saw benches, drill presses and a range of other machinery, are to be set out ready for all the new and exciting projects soon to be undertaken.

The computer room, which is an extension to the meeting room, has had carpet laid, making the place feel comfortable, warm and inviting (the committee is extremely grateful for the donation of labour by Christchurch Flooring).

There are many different projects on the go at the moment, which is the main reason why we are here.

A couple of recent community projects that the Shed has worked on have been making gates and refurbishing a laundry. These jobs help to generate some funds for the Shed.

A photographer for a na onal magazine was assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he fran cally called his home office to hire a plane.

"It will be wai ng for you at the airport!" he was assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, rural airport, sure enough, a plane was warming up near the runway. He jumped in with his equipment and yelled, "Let's go! Let's go!" The pilot swung the plane into the wind and soon they were in the air.

"Fly over the north side of the fire," said the photographer, "and make three or four low level passes." "Why?" asked the pilot.

"Because I'm going to take pictures! I'm a photographer, and photographers take pictures!" said the photographer with great exaspera on.

ANer a long pause the pilot said, "You mean you're not the instructor?"
