On May 19th 270 riders on tiny 50cc scooters set off from Christchurch and made their way over alpine passes to the West Coast. The event organised by Jayne and Mike Rattray was a fundraiser for the Cancer Society and after this, the sixth Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari, over one million dollars has been raised in total for the charity.

Kirwee rider Paul Washington was among the scooter-ists dressed in his signature Santa suit (in memory of his six year old son who died 25 years ago from a brain tumour, close to

Christmas-time). When the News (who were spectating) commented that they saw a few Santa’s on scooters, Paul laughingly replied, “there is only one Santa, the others are all imposters!

“It was a fantastic day starting with a nice morning in Christchurch, and a few laps of Ruapuna Motor Sports Park - a few scooters didn’t make it through this stage and broke down,” Paul commented.

“Some could be repaired, but others were just loaded onto trailers, and the riders became spectators for the day.

“We travelled up the Old West Coast Road, but by the time we got level with Kirwee, the wind was getting up, which proved a bit of a handful for some of the scooters. Many of the riders had never been on the open road before on scooters. Our first stop was at Sheffield for a pie and I believe they served up over 400 of them!”

A combination of the wind and Porter’s Pass proved too much for many of the scooters Paul commented, “many couldn’t make it and had to get off and push up the Pass.

Recently a group of Rolleston Probus members visited Ordering’s Nurseries original nursery on Stourbridge Street in Spreydon, Christchurch. While there the group was shown the full process of preparing plants for sale. Every stage of the process from the potting mixes, individual seed planting, pricking out and potting is all done mechanically.

Everything is moisture and temperature controlled, with thermal, or cooling, sheets, where needed, in the Nursery’s vast sheds. The group saw a large amount of propagation for indoor plants and flowers which were being grown for the market. One shed was a mass of glorious colour, with cyclamens ready for Mother’s Day. The outing continued with lunch in the Odering’s café and many purchases made for gardens, home decorating and gifts from

the shop.

At the Club’s meeting in May, Selwyn District Council Mayor Sam Broughton shared some of the plans for the future of Se lwy n i nc lud i ng w hic h developments will be completed in each area and the timeframes for these. There appears to be great things for Foster Park in the pipeline, along with all of the Selwyn District.

CentreStage Rolleston was set up in early 2018 after some like -minded individuals, with a passion for the performing arts, got together and decided Rolleston would benefit from having more drama activities available in the community. The vision in the next few years is to perform three times a year (two musicals and one play).

One of the proposed shows will be a dedicated CentreStage Rolleston Youth Theatre performance (performed by youth for youth). All performances offer an exciting t h e a t r e e x p e r i e nc e fo r audiences of all ages and those involved, and all accessible right

on the doorstep. The seven members of the Executive Committee reside in Rolleston and have a wealth of experience in all aspects of theatre, both on and off stage. All have been involved in other theatre groups throughout New Zealand and they look forward to bringing a contemporary approach to the growing community of Selwyn. Their long term desire is to have a dedicated space in the Rolleston area, offering even more opportunities for the community to embrace the performing arts. Their first show, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat’, is set to be onstage in November

After a busy month in April with the extension to the woodworking shed, May has been almost as hectic for the Rolleston Men’s Shed.

The Group was fortunate to receive a grant from the Rata Foundation for the purchase of new machinery to fit out the shed. Once this equipment is purchased, training will be offered for all members, as well as regular checks for safe usage.

Men’s Shed computers now have their own room. This makes the meeting room just that little bit bigger for the steady influx of new members and enables other Clubs to use it for their meetings.

The Group has been asked a lot about why a computer room?

With so much information available via the internet and the ability to print out plans or draw up designs for projects, computers are simply just another tool.

This also means teaching members how to use such tools, or upgrade their computers.

Fortunately, all the programmes we use are genuinely free and often do the job much better than commercial software.

Members have recently been working on the job of fitting shelves to the Rolleston Fire Brigade's van. This will enable them to carry those smaller items that are always needed, in a tidier and safer way.

The Men’s Shed is a mixture of so many different experiences.

From the latest technology, to the servicing of a 65-year-old

2018, with auditions happening in July.

Audition information will be announced on the CentreStage Rolleston Facebook page in the coming weeks and prospective cast members will be able to register on CentreStage’s newly created website.

The group is also looking for talented set designers, builders, musicians, wardrobe assistants, lighting/sound technicians, or anyone just interested in being involved in some way.

CentreStage’s mission is to, ‘connect the community through theatre’.

“Lunch at Arthur’s Pass was provided by the Rapid Relief Team who did extremely well to provide 400 burgers in an hour and of course refuelling either at, or before, Arthur’s was a necessity.

“Rain was now starting to fall and with a very cold wind, it was time to put on another layer of wet weather gear, the Santa Suit just wasn’t cutting it! Not far past Otira, the rain really started to come down and the cold was enough to fog up helmet visors too. The stop at Kumara was shortened because of the torrential downpour and indeed the racecourse was so flooded it was difficult to find a park away from the water.

“Heading into Hokitika, the rain began to ease and there were cars loaded with people cheering us on.

being simple. We were all very tired and sore from sitting on these wee bikes for over six hours riding. We were also cold and wet and feeling pretty miserable, but elated to have got through the challenge. All the misery was soon forgotten when we arrived at Hokitika to a wonderful reception by the locals.”

Collectively, the 270 scooter riders raised over $320,000 for the Cancer Society. This far exceeded the original target of $211,000 which would have meant over the six Safaris,

$1million had been raised. The event has now raised around $1,100,000 over the six events.

“I cant wait for the next one in 2020,” Paul concluded.

“Another Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari complete and what a great day it was and fundraising success,” added Jayne and Mike, the event organisers! “We hope everyone got home safely and will have no doubt slept well.”

A group of community agencies in Selwyn, supported by the Council, have launched a onestop shop with information on everything residents and newcomers need to know about the district.

The Everything Selwyn website will become a comprehensive online directory of services in the Selwyn district, offering information about everything from local schools and sports teams to special interest groups and events. It also provides practical information for those new to Selwyn and New Zealand, including information about banking, the IRD and health care.

Jason Flewellen, Flewellen Selwyn District Council’s Community Development Advisor said Everything Selwyn is an easily accessible community database for anything of interest to Selwyn residents, those who have been here a while, as well as those brand new to the area.

“The website is a go-to for the community to find out the latest information, and also let others know about their own events and services. Adding a listing is super easy and free,” he said.

The concept for the website was developed out of the research findings from the Selwyn District Co unc i l’s M ig r ant s and Newcomers Strategy. It was identified that those new to the district have no single point of contact where community information is easily and readily accessible. Migrants and newcomers, and current

residents will benefit from connecting more closely through the website. Those without internet can also access the website at Selwyn District Libraries.

T he website has been developed by Council in conjunction with Selwyn’s four community care groups: Ellesmere Community Care Organisation, Lincoln and Districts Community Care, Selwyn Central Community Care, and Malvern Community Care.

These groups will help promote, maintain and moderate listings as administrators of the website.

Beverley Elder of the Malvern Community Care Group said Everything Selwyn will enable all newcomers to Selwyn to learn about the area.

“It’s exciting that anyone will be able to access information about Selwyn online, all in one place.

“The website means even those who live in Selwyn but work out of the district, have the opportunity to get involved and

Rolleston will buzz with excitement on Thursday, June 7th when the New Zealand Vodafone Warriors arrive in the town for an exclusive visit.

Rolleston Warriors Rugby League Club invited the Vodafone Warriors to visit after a relationship was formed when the Club began, two years ago.

T he Ro l le st on W ar ri ors approached the Vodafone Warriors when they were developing their logo to get permission to use a similar design, from that point on they have been talking about the possibility of a visit.

It wasn’t until six months ago that the Club was able to extend an invitation to the team. An invitation that came about when it was announced the Vodafone Warriors were to be in Christchurch to play the Manly Sea Eagles at AMI Stadium on June 9th.

The Rolleston Club has organised an open community session before the Vodafone Warriors settle down in Christchurch in preparation for their game, The session is to be held at Rolleston College from 4.30 to 5.30 pm, during which time the public and the Warriors will have some time to interact.

The event will begin with the Club’s six and seven year olds finishing off their game, as the Warriors arrive.

The session will include time for running skill drills which will take place under the guidance of squad members. There will also be time set aside for a question and answer session, as well as an autograph opportunity.

“This is big for Selwyn! For us as a Club it is about letting those in Selwyn know there is a League Club in Rolleston,” Club President Nui Ririnui said.

“I love that the Community Care groups are there as a gatekeeper, to encourage the community to be involved and contribute. The more people use the website, the more useful it will be as a constant flow of information to help people find what they are looking for,” Bev said.

Members of the Selwyn community are encouraged to upload their own events and services, to populate the website. Anyone can upload information after registering to the site with their name, email address, and a password.

The website is grouped into various helpful sections including township information, amenities, arts culture and heritage, churches and celebrants, community and special interest, education, health and wellbeing, and sport and exercise.

On Saturday, May 12th firefighters at Rolleston Fire Brigade arranged an event that was designed to give back to their partners. The day was planned in recognition of the sacrifices firefighters’ partners and their families make, and the support they give.

“We wanted to say thank you for the support they give us. It’s not something we say enough but we truly appreciate all that partners do for our families, while we are out doing our thing,” a spokesperson for the Brigade said.

The day started with everyone meeting at the Fire Station for a glass of bubbles and a chat about the plan for the day.

Then was there was a short trip down the road to arrive at Melton Estate. There the group was joined by Area Commander

Dave Berry, before sitting down to enjoy a meal and some of the vineyard’s finest.

Children were definitely not forgotten in the plans for the day and were entertained in ‘daddy day care’ back at the station. They were kept busy with a bouncy castle, card making, and guitar hero, as well as many other activities.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton commented, “the awards are an opportunity to celebrate local success and share our stories with one another.

“Selwyn is full of people doing great work, not for glory, but because they believe in what they are doing. It’s good to recognise and highlight these achievements as models and examples of our development and leadership as a district,” he added.

“I encourage you to think about who is deserving of this

recognition and nominate them.”

The award categories open for nomination this year are: Arts, Culture & Heritage, Community Service, Environmental, Innovation Excellence (new award for 2018), Large Business, Small Business, Sport, Tourism, and Young Achievers.

For the first time, a People’s Choice Award will be presented.

This is an opportunity for the community to get even more involved in the awards. Voting for People’s Choice will take place on the Selwyn Awards’ website from Friday, June 22nd.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, June 15th.

Nominees will be assessed by independent and expert judges in each category across a range of areas. In 2016, a total of 55 nominations were received.

The awards are open to individuals and organisations who live, or are based, in the Selwyn district and meet the criteria for entry listed on

the Station, they were treated to more refreshments while the firefighters in the family prepared and cooked a spitroast (even cleaned-up afterwards too!) for the planned family evening.

It has been reported that this will be an annual event, and plans are already being talked about for next year.

Last week West Melton Primary School celebrated with Henrietta Haskell (centre), a former pupil of the School who was this year's West Melton Community Board's Scholarship recipient.

Henrietta talked about her time at West Melton and her favourite memories as a student, which included the bi-ennial Wellington Camp trip and being in the Kapa Haka group. Henrietta accepted her scholarship from Mayor Sam Broughton (right) alongside school principal, Sue Jackson (left).

KOWHAI SANCTUARY VISIT

On Thursday, May 16th West Melton Primary School Eco-Warriors, along with parent helpers, travelled to Kowhai Sanctuary to monitor their previous plantings from 2013 to 2017. The children were excited to see the progress that the plants had made. While at the sanctuary, they also tracked insect and bird life with Matt Standford from Enviroschools.

“We are currently looking for adult volunteers in the Rolleston area,” said Hannah of GirlGuidingNZ. “The GirlGuiding Units in Rolleston cater to over eighty girls in the community, aged from five to seventeen, which is amazing,” she said.

“These units enable the girls to develop into confident, adventurous and empowered leaders in their local, national and global communities.

“We can’t provide these opportunities for girls without our amazing volunteers. We currently need volunteers to help us out in Rolleston and would welcome anyone who wants to help young girls, and

women, in their community, regardless of how much time they can give.”

GirlGuiding NZ is a not for profit organisation with the vision that all girls and young women are valued, inspired and empowered to take action to change their world.

“We really need to spread the word to help us empower more

girls and young women in the Rolleston area. Obviously appropriate checks would be made on all those volunteering, but we would welcome newcomers to assist,” Hannah concluded.

Hauora has been a big topic at Rolleston College this year.

Hauora is the Māori term for wellbeing that is made up of four parts; taha tinana (physical), taha hinengaro (mental/emotional), taha whanau (social), and taha wairua (spiritual).

We have learnt that it is very important to look after our hauora to keep ourselves healthy and to improve our outcome in school work.

On May 10th year 9 students from Rolleston College had the opportunity to learn more about hauora.

The day began in the auditorium where they got an introduction to the four parts of the brain.

The flash brain is what makes humans so special. It allows us to make good decisions and to think about the consequences of our actions. Unfortunately, teenagers have not fully developed this part of the brain yet, so that's why they seem to

take a lot of risks and make a lot of bad decisions.

We also learnt that teens only use 10% of their flash brain and use 90% of their emotional brain, so there is actually a scientific reason for teens being so moody.

For the rest of the day, we participated in workshops based on the four dimensions of hauora. This involved writing

reflections on the brain talk, learning about a positive wellbeing framework called P.E.R.M.A-V, looking at how music can affect our physical well-being, and finally attending a presentation by Constable Megan about cyber safety and how this connects to our social well-being.

On Thursday, May 10th Rolleston College’s year 10 students went to a transforming Futures day.

My chosen area that I wanted to explore on this day was medical sciences, along with around thirty other students.

We started off the day at the Christchurch Women's hospital where we were greeted by Doctor, Vicky Cameron. She showed us around and gave us an introduction about the hospital and Otago University.

We then went into a lecture theatre where two students talked about their experiences in studying the medical sciences so far; it was great to get current students’ perspectives.

We also got some tips on what to study in high school which everyone found very helpful.

The class was then taken to another floor where the laboratories were located. For me personally this was a highlight of the day because we got to see science put to practical use in the labs, I felt this made the tour even more exciting.

After visiting the hospital we visited Ara, unfortunately their labs were being relocated to a new building so instead we had a tour of some of the other facilities and got a feel for the atmosphere there.

After Ara was the careers expo held at Horncastle Arena. We were greeted by music, wide smiles and lots of brochures.

Even though we are only Year 10, it was great to see what kind of options are out there after we finish high school, and

how many opportunities there are.

Overall the whole day gave a great insight into career options for the future.

Students from around the Selwyn area recently took part in the global anti-bullying campaign Pink Shirt Day, which was held on Friday, May 18th.

Over 1,000 schools and 850 workplaces around New Zealand signed up to participate in the day.

Schools across the Nation were also encouraged to participate in Bullying-free New Zealand Week, which ran from May 14th to 18th in the lead up to Pink Shirt Day. Rolleston College embraced the bully-free event and learners alongside staff dressed up in pink for the second year and explored ways in which they could stand up to bullying.

Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two teenagers

took a stand against homophobic bullying, mobilising their whole school after a fellow student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

New Zealand has been celebrating Pink Shirt Day since 2009 and aims to create schools, workplaces, and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected.

“Bullying can have serious and ongoing impacts on our mental health and wellbeing. We know that people who are bullied are more likely to experience symptoms of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and avoid going to school,” Mental Health Foundation chief executive Shaun Robinson said.

“Bullying can also negatively impact performance and

productivity in workplaces. Pink Shirt Day is a reminder that small actions lead to larger actions that create positive change where we live, work and play.”

Selwyn District Council and Police are reminding motorists of the dangers of winter driving as the wintry months approach.

Weather conditions such as fog, rain, icy roads, sun strike and snow pose challenges for even the most skilled drivers.

Reduced visibility and traction on the roads can lead to road crashes.

Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police said there are inherent risks in winter driving, but motorists can act to improve road safety.

“Make sure you have sufficient tread depth on your tyres and

that your brakes are in warrant of fitness condition,” Sergeant Stills said. “Ensure your wiper blades are in good condition and can clear your windscreen easily. Drive with your lights on, and watch your following distances and speed on curves and through bends.

“Be mindful of wet and shaded roads where ice can form.
