On May 19th 270 riders on tiny 50cc scooters set off from Christchurch and made their way over alpine passes to the West Coast. The event organised by Jayne and Mike Rattray was a fundraiser for the Cancer Society and after this, the sixth Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari, over one million dollars has been raised in total for the charity. Kirwee rider Paul Washington was among the scooter-ists dressed in his signature Santa suit (in memory of his six year old son who died 25 years ago from a brain tumour, close to
Christmas-time). When the News (who were spectating) commented that they saw a few Santa’s on scooters, Paul laughingly replied, “there is only one Santa, the others are all imposters! “It was a fantastic day starting with a nice morning in Christchurch, and a few laps of Ruapuna Motor Sports Park - a few scooters didn’t make it through this stage and broke down,” Paul commented. “Some could be repaired, but others were just loaded onto trailers, and the riders became spectators for the day.
“We travelled up the Old West Coast Road, but by the time we got level with Kirwee, the wind was getting up, which proved a bit of a handful for some of the scooters. Many of the riders had never been on the open road before on scooters. Our first stop was at Sheffield for a pie and I believe they served up over 400 of them!” A combination of the wind and Porter’s Pass proved too much for many of the scooters Paul commented, “many couldn’t make it and had to get off and push up the Pass.
