There was a large crowd in attendance for the Rolleston ANZAC Parade.

Mayor Sam Broughton attended the Burnham Military Camp ANZAC dawn service with many locals from around the district.

ANZAC day saw Rolleston Rugby Club Division 1 players start their game preparation by attending the Rolleston ANZAC service, followed by a nutritional brunch. A minute’s silence was observed before their game against Southern. In true ANZAC spirit they were joined in the Clubrooms by the Rolly Rebels Golden Oldies and the Australian team the Rebels played on the day.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner it’s time to think about Mums and what they’ve told us. So why not Beautytips from our gorgeous Mum? 1. Selwyn Youth Council are celebrating after the success of the Selwyn Link bus service which ran on April 17th and 19th, and saw over 550 passengers travel between Southbridge and Darfield.

Jason Flewellen, Flewellen Community Development Advisor for Selwyn District Council said the service was a huge success.

The first buses of each day were standing room only and at one stage they had reached capacity, meaning that a few understanding passengers remained behind.

Jason said, “there were plenty of passengers throughout the whole day, and a huge diversity in ages.

“Though the bus link was initially created as a trial in answer to the problem facing youth of not being able to get around Selwyn in the holidays, the opportunity was also taken up by both the elderly and young alike,” Jason said.

“There were those on the buses that had never been to some of the smaller townships before,” he added.

Older persons used the service as a great day trip, going through all the towns and stopping off for a cuppa along the way. There were parents with young children enjoying school holidays who were on a bus outing, before heading out shopping.

“Then there were the youth, lots of youth, which was exactly what we wanted to see,” Jason said. “Either heading into Rolleston to meet with mates, go for a swim or to meet another bus heading into the skatepark in Christchurch.”

Youth Council members were on the buses travelling back and forth gathering data, while Jason and co-workers spent time in cars travelling around the route making sure everyone was happy.

“The youth council are extremely pleased and excited with the results,” Jason added “They will spend the next couple of months collating the data collected and will then report to Environment Canterbury and the Council. We are hopeful that we can come up with a more permanent solution.

“If nothing comes from this the Youth Council will look at approaching the Vehicle Trusts in the district and see what other solutions there are to move the youth of Selwyn around in the school holidays,” Jason concluded.

Recently the Selwyn District Council proposed an extension to Selwyn Aquatic Centre which included: • New programme 25 metre, 8 lane pool valued at $9.3 million • A café with outdoor courtyard valued at $1.1 million • A fitness/wellbeing space valued at $1.6 million.

Since the Selwyn Aquatic Centre opened in 2013 it has become one of the Selwyn district’s most popular recreation facilities.

Attracting users of all ages from throughout Selwyn and beyond, the continuing demand has seen the Centre struggling to accommodate all its customer requirements.

The Council is now proposing to build an additional 25-metre, 8lane programme pool at the Centre. The new pool will be

multi-purpose, accommodating swimming lessons, Aquafitness and casual swimmers.

In response to recent consultation on additional facilities, the project would also include a fitness programming space and a café.

Detailed design and construction would begin this year, and be completed in 2019.

The biggest question is how will this be funded? The Council’s proposed extensions are estimated to cost a total of $12 million.

The cost of the project will be funded by borrowing, repaid by an increase in the swimming pools’ targeted rate.

The consultation process closes at 5pm on Friday, May 4th.

Group’s interest this month, telling of the many varied jobs he has had and how he overcame cancer early in his retirement.

He demonstrated how attitude has a lot to do with how a person spends their senior years.

Barry also helps to organise the Group’s outings and many members are looking forward to a visit to Odering’s Nurseries propagating sheds and lunch in their café, which will be coming up soon.

When Senior Sergeant Peter Stills, Stills who is in charge of Selwyn District Police, spoke to the Rolleston Combined Probus group late in 2017 there just wasn’t enough time available to answer all the questions he had directed at him. So it was only fitting that he returned to the Club’s April meeting.

During this latest visit Peter elaborated on his previous talk, of policing in Selwyn.

Peter shared with members a Government paper showing plans the department is looking at for improvements in dealing with all cases brought to them.

Something that really stood out to the Group, and it was agreed was of great concern in Selwyn, was the high death rate from motor vehicle crashes, north of the Rakaia bridge.

A wide variety of questions were answered by Peter, leaving all Probus members feeling safer and more confident to live in what has become a fast growing area.

The Rolleston Men’s Shed has had a busy month with the woodwork shop extensions nearing completion, and only the final finishing bits to do, such as wiring and gutters.

The next step in the woodwork shop will be to position the existing woodwork machinery, as well as some of the new items, in the premises. This will give the group more room to create a cleaner environment in

the front area for assembly of projects. There are also racks for holding and storing materials to be made.

The Group have been involved with many projects, including the steel racks for the Fire Brigade's truck that have just been fitted and the ongoing Rolleston art statues that the group are in the process of making.

There are always smaller,

though no less important projects on the go, with items such as bird boxes or wooden trucks for the market.

Member's computers are being serviced and instruction given; and an electronics section will then be setup.

The Men’s Shed is still collecting batteries for recycling as part of their fundraising efforts.

Two new programmes are being offered at Selwyn District Libraries beginning in May. Teen Artspace - Fashion Illustration Selwyn District Libraries are hosting courses for 13-18 year olds interested in becoming a fashion designer, merchandiser, or stylist.

Attendees will learn to develop their own croquis, a basic fashion design sketch. The course teaches how to analyse and draw female fashion figures,

as well as how to develop design ideas and fashion sketches. The course will also include basic silhouettes used in fashion design and how to represent clothing simply and effectively. Each session runs for an hour and half.

On Thursday, April 5th, Mt Maunganui based premium petfood manufacturer, Ziwi, opened a new facility in Burnham and to celebrate invited some local ‘dog-friends’ for a Dog Morning Tea. All shapes and sizes from Great Danes to Chihuahuas sampled some of the first products off the line.

The New Zealand Natural Chews and Treats Company will also operate out of the Burnham site to produce a range of natural, premium products for export markets. ”This is ANZCO’s first foray into the pet food segment and it will be providing Ziwi with access to lar ge q uan tit ie s of premium quality, grass fed products. The development of these treats and chews will enable the establishment of new international markets. There is huge potential for growth and we can do it all with New Zealand based, family owned manufacturing operations and the very best of New Zealand suppliers,” Managing Director, Richard Lawrence, Lawrence explained.

Last month Clearview Primary home cooks presented their creations to a team of judges at the School as part of the School’s new and creative competition called ‘Coffee Bean to Cuisine’.

Once cooks had registered for the competition they were then given a bag of Clearview Coffee Beans from the school café, Five to Nine. Competition hopefuls had to use the beans to create a delicious dish of any kind; sweet or savoury, food or beverage.

The competition tested the creative talents of parents and staff who entered a dish or drink in the competition.

This event saw fifteen unique dishes entered. The standard was very high, which made the judging a tough task for Celebrity Chef Jax Hamilton, Hamilton Principal Rob Rush and Challenge Team student Amelie Dunn.

Dunn The competition was a collaborative partnership with a local charity ‘One Mother to Another’ founded by Christina Buckland (a Clearview parent).

One Mother to Another provides gift bags to distressed mums and carers who find themselves in either the Children’s Acute Unit or the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Christchurch Hospital. The need is high with

Over the past few months the team at ‘One Mother to Another’ have been busy collecting recipes from celebrities and renowned chefs including, Annabel Langbein, Peter Gordon, Pete Evans, Josh Emmett and Toni Street to form

a cookbook which will be sold around New Zealand to raise funds for the Charity.

The overall winning dish was a mocha tart with coffee cream created by Lisa Martin.

Martin Lisa’s winning dish will be professionally photographed and included in the ’One Mother to Another’ cookbook.

Have you seen our new Kinetic Sculpture? That is the question going around at West Melton School. The story of the new sculpture begun in 2016, when Helen Trappitt, Trappitt (a director at Lewis Bradford Consulting Engineers), held a presentation for the year 5 and 6 learners at West Melton School.

The presentation was about the engineering of sculptures in conjunction with ‘The Power of Art’ inquiry that classes were looking at with teachers Jo Buckenham and Bronwen Seaward.

Seaward From this presentation Helen decided to set up a design competition with the support of principal Sue Jackson.

Jackson Learners produced drawings or prototypes of their design ideas and from there a group of finalists presented their designs to Helen and Sue for judging.

This led to Otis' design being selected as the winner.

Helen then project managed, engineered and partly funded the fabrication of Otis’ winning designed sculpture.

Once it was ready Cam Seaward assisted by coordinating the paint job of the sculpture, making sure it had a professional finish that would withstand the elements.

The whole process would not have been possible without the kind donations and support from businesses and community members who helped with different areas of the design process, as well as by providing the materials and time this year to install the sculpture.

“I feel really proud when I see it up there, hopefully it gets windy enough to spin the W and M,” Otis said! “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and would like to thank everyone involved- especially Helen, Cam and Mrs Jackson”.

ON OUR DOORSTEP On May 19th, 950 firefighters take on the 1,103 stairs of Auckland’s Sky Tower for the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge raising funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

This year firefighters ranging in age from 16 to 76 years old, will gear up with full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus weighing up to twenty-five kilograms.

Across New Zealand, close to 200 brigades and their firefighters are holding popular fundraisers such as car washes, sausage sizzles and quiz nights.

More unusual events include hypnotist evenings and guessing the number of Lego bricks in a ten kilogram fire truck.

To date this year firefighters have raised over $400,000

towards a fundraising target of $1 million.

The funds raised will help Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand run their vital nationwide service supporting Kiwis and their families who are living with a blood cancer.

Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand General Manager Georgie Hackett said the support from brigades and their local communities is humbling.

“We are so grateful for the tremendous generosity and hard work of firefighters participating in the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge.

“This fundraising is the backbone of our service and helps us grow our vital support for families living with blood cancer in their communities right across the country.”

SKYCITY Auckland hosted the first Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge in 2005, and the event has gone from strength to strength every year.

“We’re so proud to have Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand as a charity partner and to have an icon like the Sky Tower that has enabled this incredibly successful fundraising event that has raised nearly $6 million over the past thirteen years,” said Brad Burnett, General Manager SKYCITY Hotels and Sky Tower.

Well winter is definitely right on our doorstep. If you have managed to complete your pre winter chores ie. clean out your spou ng, check and block off all exterior holes around garage doors and sumps etc, your house should be protected for the season. You can be si ng inside on a wet cold day without the should-have feeling, but with the done-that feeling. Your local rodents won't be ge ng inside to share your warm house, and if you set your bait sta ons on your outside walls they won't be needing shelter anyway. This me of year spiders are fairly inac ve, except for whitetails who tend to live in our houses with us, and our winter hea ng is very convenient for them.

Bringing in logs for the fire is an obvious way of increasing their numbers inside. They like heat and because our wood sheds are usually in a warm dry place in our garden, we tend to transport them inside ourselves. The other pest that winter brings on, are cluster-flies. Once the male has seGled down in his roos ng place for the winter he lets off his pheromone and thousands can turn up. It is just about impossible to block them out, so if you find them and want them out; call for a treatment.

They’ll ride 250 gruelling kilometres Coast-to-Coast from Christchurch to Hokitika on 50cc scooters to raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society.

Entry registrations were filled in just four days and fundraising is well underway with over $135,000 donated at the time of print. This year will be a big one for organisers and participants, if they can raise the target amount of $211K it will bring the event total over six rides to one million dollars raised for Cancer research, education and support.

The Scooter Safari was created in 2009 by Jayne Rattray and her husband in support of a young friend diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. They were not a professional event management company, just the average Kiwi Mum and Dad organising the Safari in their spare time to try make a difference The whole project started small with the idea snowballing into what is now a massive biennial event. “It's not a race, or for the faint hearted - it is designed to be the coldest, lo ng e st, h ar d es t, m o st gruelling and uncomfortable test of endurance on a city scooter to raise money and awareness for cancer sufferers,” Jayne said.

This year over half of the 250 registered riders are new to the event having never ridden in the Scooter Safari before. “It’s great to see that interest in the event is still growing with riders coming from all over New Zealand and even from off shore to take part,” enthused an excited Jayne.

The ride starts at 9am at the Mike Pero Motorsport Park with several laps around the track before setting off towards the Alps on State Highway 73 to Hokitika. First stop is for morning tea at the Sheffield Pie Shop before heading up the mighty Porters Pass to Lake Lyndon. Then it’s onto Arthur's Pass for lunch and down the treacherous Otira Viaduct to the last regroup at the Kumara Racecourse before heading into Hokitika to finish up outside the Beachfront Hotel around 4:45pm.

“Our riders have a habit of dressing up - we’ll have clowns, superheroes, storm troopers and who knows what else,” Jane said with a laugh.

There is a map of the route on the website for those who are interested in seeing the Safari scoot past. “It really is worth spectating if you are not taking part,” she concluded.

Clearview Primary School recently hosted their second Clearview Fete and once again, the sun shone and there was a wonderful positive atmosphere throughout.

The event was planned as the major fundraiser for the Clearview Parent Community Group (PCG) who organised it with the support of the School community. The Fete was many months in the making, with countless hours put in to get everything ready for the day.

Clearview Principal, Rob Rush, Rush commented, “the PCG Organising Committee did an outstanding job. The hours they put in to making sure the Fete was a smooth and safe running event was appreciated by us all.”

Thousands of people came through the school gates to enjoy the entertainment and wide range of high-quality stalls on offer.

Visitors were treated to stalls selling food, beverages, clothing, jewellery, craft, plants and outdoor accessories to name but a few. There were a range of activities and entertainment on offer for Fete visitors to choose from, such as pony rides, bouncy castles and a free treasure hunt.

Clearview staff and students were all involved in a range of

different ways, which went a long way toward ensuring that it was a whole school inclusive event.

The Fete turned over a healthy fundraising total of $34,000, which will be going to the School’s library.

“Not only was the Fete extremely successful at raising funds for the library, but it was brilliant in terms of bringing our School and wider community together,” Rob said. “What the Fete achieved was priceless - it united us all for the day and it went a long way toward strengthening our partnerships.”

This last month has seen the completion of most of the Clubs’ competitions and championships.

The majority of the Club Champions entered the Centre Champion of Champions competitions with mixed success, but Graeme Hessey has won through to the finals of the Year 1 and 2 division which

is to be played on April 28th and 29th and the Club wishes him the best of luck.

Congratulations go to Gretta Leigh who once again won the Ladies’ Club Championship Singles title by winning both sides of the draw.

The Council is seeking community feedback on whether to introduce chlorination to some community water supplies.

Selwyn District Council is committed to providing its communities with safe drinking water. Across thirty water supplies the Council currently use a variety of water treatment methods including secure ground water (to meet current New Zealand Drinking Water Standards), Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, selective abstraction and filtration, and chlorination.

Following the Government’s inquiry into the Havelock North drinking water contamination incident, councils have been urged to ensure the protection of drinking-water sources and effective treatment of supplies

for the protection of public health. In response, the Council has accelerated the programme to install UV treatment on secure bores.

Consideration is also being given to chlorination, to provide additional protection. Chlorine provides residual treatment in the water reticulation system which UV does not provide, minimising the impact of any contamination which may enter the distribution system. It is widely used in New Zealand drinking water supplies and is currently used on five supplies in Selwyn, and soon to be added to two further schemes.

A new initiative by Canterbury Golf and New Zealand Golf has seen children from around Canterbury get involved with Team Golf.

The events have provided an opportunity for children to gain experience in a shortened six hole course, team event, with the support of family members as caddies for the young, budding golfers.

Children aged four to fourteen years have teamed up and enjoyed the opportunity to make new friends in a fun and relaxed environment.

The ‘It's Ok’ rules provide a relaxed feel to the event where it's all about making golf achievable and enjoyable for those involved. The events have been supported by numerous golf clubs which has seen Weedons, Tai Tapu, Lincoln and Greendale hosting events on Sunday afternoons with many local children attending.

place to play during winter, but will also improve the efficiency of heating the area.

Further to this the Club has additionally upgraded its lighting, installing new LED lights above the courts. Again, the Club has acted to create a more energy efficient way of lighting, as well as improving the overall functionality of this community facility. The new lights replace the previous outdated system with the upgrade providing more light on court, bringing the facilities up to a more professional standard, it was reported.
