Rolleston’s Hannah Drury is not only a mother to Daniel aged 8 and Matthew aged 5, and the wife of Alex, Alex but earlier this year was also one of a select few who can say they have swum from one side of Lake Taupo to the other. She completed the distance in 14hrs 19mins and 56 seconds. “Officially, the lake is 40.2km from south to north, but I actually swam 41.5km, as you never quite swim in a straight line,” Hannah said. Hannah grew up in the UK, but moved to Rolleston ten years ago with Alex, and commented that although she had been swimming all her life it had always been pool swimming and it was only relatively recently she began open water swimming.
"Fresh water is a lot better than salt water because you don't get big waves, and sharks and things," she laughed. “I trained specifically for Lake Taupo for about ten months, typically swimming around forty to fifty kilometres a week using the Selwyn Aquatic Centre over the winter and then Corsair/ Cass Bay in the spring. “I decided to challenge myself by swimming Lake Taupo because it's much easier to keep training when you have something to aim for,” Hannah added. “Plus I was determined not to fail; I knew the training was going to be long and hard but I needed to keep going.” New Zealand’s best open water swimmer Philip Rush was on the pilot boat (one of two boats

alongside Hannah as she swam); he holds the record for the fastest swim across Lake Taupo (10.5 hours), and has also swum Cook Straight twice and the English Channel three times. Alex and Philip, aboard the pilot boat, kept Hannah supplied with food and energy gel every half an hour as she treaded water to take it in. This is one of the open water swim rules to make the attempt official - no holding on to the boat and also Hannah had to only wear togs, swimming cap and goggles. “Alex, was on the IRB next to me throughout the swim, offering me support and passing on messages from friends and fellow swimmers who were following me on the tracker,” Hannah said. “It was also great

to have friends and my sons on the beach at the finish to cheer me.” Waiting for appropriate weather to get started frustrated everyone involved, but when the massive achievement had been finally realised, Hannah, and quite rightly so, felt extremely proud. When the News asked her what was next, she replied: “That's the million dollar question! I'm not too sure at the moment but definitely nothing as far as this one! I hope to get back to Taupo next year for the Epic swim which is a ten kilometre race in the Lake, and hopefully also swim as part of a team in Challenge Wanaka,” Hannah concluded.
