Local St John member, John Sunckell, of Leeston was Sunckell honoured at a ceremony held in St Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin on November 18th and followed by a reception in the Dunedin Town Hall.

John was invested as a Commander of the Order of St John by her Excellency the Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, Reddy Governor General, and Prior of St John in New Zealand.

“The honour bestowed on me of Commander of the Order of St John is a nice recognition of the work done not only by me but

also of my family and staff who over time have borne the brunt of my absence from what ever, as life has carried on,” John said.

The honours are sanctioned by The Queen, Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of St John and presented in New Zealand by the Governor General. St John has its own honours’ system, and this is equivalent to the New Zealand Honours’ system.

The service saw honours conferred on about 35 members of St John from throughout New Zealand.

Other Selwyn, or ex-Selwyn, people honoured were Lynda Walter and Ross Meder of Darfield, Karen Sunckell of Leeston, and ex-Darfield member Karyn Coker (Weir Weir) Weir and Dan Ohs of Rolleston. They were supported by highly ranked members from throughout New Zealand who had travelled for the investiture.

Well we’re another year older and wiser (on reflection definitely the former - but probably not the latter!) and Christmas has rolled around again. This year has flown by and the News continues to be constantly busy - for which we are very grateful. We are so appreciative of our customers’ support, without which there would be no News. Thank you all so much for continuing to patronise us, it allows us to bring the paper to you and hopefully you all enjoy the read.

We’ve been in our new location for almost a year and a half now (still on occasion folk can’t find us!!) and the extra space makes working and printing, so much easier. Printing the paper is no longer a few hours work - it is a job all on its own. The circulation numbers have dramatically increased as the area has had a huge jump in population.

Some of our advertisers have been with us since day one (The Rolleston News began in May 2005) and many others are close to that milestone. We are aware that social media is impacting on print media, but it would appear we are doing something right by identifying our market and retaining our ‘community newspaper’ feel.

We very much enjoy bringing the stories of success (the occasional failure!) and the happenings and goings-on from the area, to our readers. We also thoroughly enjoy receiving your contributions and publishing them wherever possible.

A big thank you to those that distribute the News; to the youngsters who deliver in rain or shine, and the RD contractors who ensure the paper gets distributed on time.

Our team work hard to try and get everything right and while that doesn’t always happen (we’re only human) be assured it is never intentional.

We’re all looking forward to a well-earned break over Christmas - isn’t everyone?

John is a true volunteer within St John. The time commitment is huge and he gives his time easily to support St John locally.

John explained, “when asked what is the best part on the road it is about making a difference to people’s lives at that point in time. For us it may be an insignificant nothing, but to the patient or their family it may be the most significant event in their lives to date. The reviving of someone who was in cardiac arrest can be an adrenaline rush and exciting, but equally holding the hand of someone not long for this world, providing them with care and reassurance is just as rewarding.”

In addition to his operational responsibilities, John has been an appointed representative on the Canterbury District Volunteer Project, which surveyed all Canterbury Volunteer stations as to their needs and helped write the conclusion.

He was also appointed as a volunteer representative on the national Medical Data Transfer project, contributing information and actively working with the project developers from Ireland.

John took the role to ensure

that the new system was fit for purpose, recognising the vast diff er enc e in vo l unt e er competency and at times, limited use, along with articulating the geographical challenges of rural New Zealand.

The weekend included a train trip around parts of the Otago peninsular, the very formal Investiture ceremony which was

an emotional affair for postulants and supporters alike, and then the civic function to follow. The Scottish touch of being piped on to the train, as well as into the civic function added to the events’ appeal.

With family present it was a fitting way to recognise the ‘sacrifice’ of allowing their partner/parent to follow their passion.

Helloworld Rolleston recently collected over 500 entries to a competition run as part of the company’s promotion at the Hororata Highland Games. Maree was the happy winner of two Air New Zealand tickets to Sydney which she and her children are already excitedly planning to use.

The Awards Evening for Lincoln Envirotown’s Responsible Business Awards was held on Friday, November 3rd in the Rolleston Community Lounge. In previous years these Awards have been conducted in different areas of Selwyn, but for the first time businesses from the whole District came together to receive recognition for the excellent sustainable and community initiatives that so many are implementing.

The proceedings were greatly enhanced by two excellent presentations; James McDonald from Yealands Wineries (who had kindly sponsored some of the refreshments) gave an insight into the myriad of steps that they have taken to become a sustainable enterprise that wins Worldwide Awards. It was reported there were hurdles along the way; the attempt to use Guinea Pigs to be the nonfuel- burning ‘mowers’ were met with glee by the local hawk population, and they had to be replaced with miniature sheep imported at great expense.

Martin and Lisa Bennett from the Laboratory Lincoln (also providers of some liquid refreshment) gave a fascinating account of how they had built their establishment using materials from buildings condemned by the Earthquake.

Rangi Ruru school staircases and the ex-Hororata Pub bar are all now part of The Laboratory.

A new feature of these Awards

At the November meeting of the Rolleston Combined Probus Club Senior Sergeant Pete Stills, head of the Selwyn Police district gave an interesting and informative talk about the Police Department and its services in Selwyn.

Of special note was that although it may seem that there is no one on duty at the station, every call made can be actioned straight away thanks to modern technology devices, of which every officer has one and takes it wherever they go. Calls are instantly referred to the correct department.

Pete commented that Rolleston is one of the two safest towns in the country.

The Group’s October outing was to Love Light Candle Studio in Hasketts Road, Yaldhurst.

Those attending watched as Soya flakes were melted in a large urn, one of a variety of perfumes added, then poured into attractive containers. It was explained that candles are often given as gifts for all occasions, such as bereavements for both humans and pets; or hospitals where flowers are not acceptable, as well as birthdays etc. Love light Candles not only manufacture candles but will also arrange their delivery to customers.

It was clearly recognised on the night that all participants were winners. The assessors detailed numerous initiatives that local businesses are undertaking.

It was a true celebration of the wonderful things businesses are doing alongside providing customers with goods and services. Lincoln Envirotown congratulates them all.

The inaugural Selwyn Motor Festival and Family Fun Day proved to be an outstanding success with an estimated 8,000 folk through the gates.

Even the road was gridlocked at one stage from the volume of those wishing to attend! The event was a fundraiser for Selwyn Central St John and while the final figures are yet to be calculated and confirmed, at the time of going to print, it appeared that around $25,000 would be donated to St John in the New Year.

The Motor Festival, held at Rolleston College on November 26th, saw over 850 cars, motorbikes and trucks displayed, along with music,

food and family friendly entertainment. Organising committee member and SDC counsellor Craig Watson said he was overwhelmed by the fantastic community support.

“The day exceeded my expectations and I am proud to be a part of it.

“I am also humbled by the strong community support.”

Craig added that volunteers on the day were amazing and worked tirelessly.

“The food vendors and market holders that retained their commitment were well and truly rewarded by a busy and successful day,” he said.

“I am extremely proud of the organisation that brought about the Selwyn Motor Festival, as well as the way the community came in behind it and supported the project. Add to this the support of sponsors, the motor enthusiasts who displayed and the people who came to see,” he said.

Craig commented that he hopes that this can be an annual event, but like most such events that will depend on its ability to retain volunteers and attract support from stalls and food vendors.

950 people visited the Grotto during the week and $3000 was raised for Honor.

The annual Lego themed Christmas Grotto Fundraiser has recently come to an end after another successful year.

House of Bricks, founded in 2014 by Rachel de Vries, Vries holds an event each year in Rolleston to raise funds for a person, family or cause in the Selwyn community.

This year they chose to raise funds that will go towards Honor Griffiths, Griffiths a young West Melton girl with Cerebral Palsy.

All the funds raised are going towards essential equipment she requires to make day to day living easier and more enjoyable.

The event, which ran from Wednesday, November 29th through to Saturday, December 2nd, took Rachel and husband Jason de Vries many hours of work. They were both kept busy coordinating the event as well as putting together the display.

There were several thousand pieces of Lego used and over

200 hours were put in to the construction of the display pieces.

This year the Grotto had a range of different displays, including two chairs built with Lego that the children were able to sit on, there was a Technic creation, a Lego city street party

Since opening its doors seven years ago, Specsavers Hornby has provided its customers with professional eye care and exceptional customer service, administering over 50,000 eye tests and nearly 60,000 pairs of glasses and prescription sunglasses.

Co-owners Optometrist Suney Cheung and Dispenser Lynsey Parkin are continuing this legacy, with over twenty years in optometry between them.

Lynsey has been with the Hornby store since its doors opened, with Suney joining mid way through this year, having previously worked in the Hornby community and also Specsavers, Westfield Riccarton.

The whole Hornby team encourages the community to prioritise health and proactively schedule necessary health checks, including an eye test, as part of a ‘health warrant of fitness’.

A recent survey commissioned

by Specsavers revealed that more than one million New Zealanders have not had an eye exam in the past two years, despite recommendations.

Lynsey stresses the importance

of regular testing, and commented, “it’s essential to have your eyes tested every two years to track any changes in eye health that may be occurring, even if you aren’t concerned about any changes in vision or don’t wear glasses”.

“A Specsavers comprehensive eye exam includes free Digital Retinal Photography. It can provide insight into other health issues including blood pressure and diabetes, on top of sightrelated conditions,” Lynsey added.

Suney, who is passionate about children’s eye care, also wants to encourage parents to bring their children in-store for an eye test.

“For children, we like to use the phrase, ‘after eight is too late’,”

Suney said. “Many parents are unaware that several long term eye issues can potentially be prevented, or treated, if detected by an eye specialist before a child turns eight. We invest a lot in the latest technologies so we can offer specialised services for children.”

Recent Specsavers research found that children in particular are spending the equivalent of a full time job (35 hours a week) staring at screens. Spending too much time in front of electronic devices indoors can cause serious, long-term, damage to young eyes.

Southfuels is a New Zealand Bulk Fuel supplier, whose unique Fuel for Schools programme, is a simple and easy way in which locals are able to give back to schools in their communities. Southfuels have already distributed $700,000 to schools throughout New Zealand in the last eight years, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

Over the last few weeks five local schools each received a $1,000 Sports or Technology package all thanks to this programme.

Springfield and Windwhistle Schools opted for new Chromebooks for their classrooms, while, Ellesmere College, Sheffield and Springfield Schools all added to their sports’ equipment with either Hockey or Basketball Gear. One even added a Ki O Rahi Set (Traditional Māori Game) which

This was all made possible thanks to the Schools’ local communities who purchase their bulk fuel from Southfuels and opt to be part of the Fuel for Schools. The programme is very simple; for every 100 litres of bulk fuel that is delivered by Southfuels, 50 cents is given back to the customer’s nominated school. The balance accrues and once it reaches

School Community Officer, Constable Rick Groen had a great time manning the Blue Light BBQ which fed 152 Selwyn Road Patrollers who got together for a School Traffic Safety Team Pool Party.

The event at Selwyn Aquatic Centre was to reward the volunteer patrollers who get their fellow school mates to school and back safely. The patrollers had a great time on the pool inflatables, followed by an awards’ ceremony for most improved, most reliable and most enthusiastic patroller.

$1,000 the schools can redeem their reward from the over forty packages on offer.

Fuel for School Coordinator, Alanna Taylor said, “the programme was developed as a way for us to support and give back, to the predominantly rural communities in which we operate. We couldn’t reward so many without the wonderful support from those supporting us. On average we are presenting thirty packages nationwide every three months and the joy and appreciation received from both the students and teachers when presented, brings a real sense of pride to us all.”

Following West Melton Bowling Club’s opening day on Saturday, September 23rd their season has got off to a good start.

The Club congratulates Gretta Leigh, Leigh Bill Paekau, Paekau Bob Burnett and Paul Williams who were selected to play for Canterbury Country in their respective divisions.

Pre-Christmas Saturday competitions for Club members include Centre 3 x 4’s, 2 x 4’s, Development 4’s (previously Junior 4’s) which are played in the morning and the Malvern Fives which are played in the afternoon.

Ladies Pennants - a Malvern competition is played on Wednesdays.

On Thursday nights West Melton Bowling Club has three Development teams (under eight years) playing in the

Centre Development Triples Competition.

Club competitions include Men’s Triples played on Wednesday nights and on Tuesday nights the Ladies play their Club Triples.

Social Bowls will start on Thursday, February 8th; this competition is for all nonbowlers, and now is an ideal opportunity to get teams of four organised and entries submitted.

Some years I have been really ready for Christmas to arrive so that I could have a brief breather from the year’s hectic schedule. However, this year it seems strange to be thinking about Christmas already. Perhaps this is because Parliament has only just got underway again recently after the post-election hiatus so it seems odd to be taking a break again soon.

I would like to thank the people of Rolleston and the rest of Selwyn for giving me your continued support this year to return to Parliament as your local MP. I am more determined than ever to keep standing up for the things that matter to our communities and make sure your voices are heard.

It has been another busy year in Rolleston with some major construction projects underway including the new retail complex.

A highlight for me was attending the openings of Rolleston College and Lemonwood Grove School at the beginning of the year. It is fantastic to have these excellent new facilities to cater for our growing population of families here in Rolleston.

During 2017 I have met with constituents from all over Selwyn and listened to their concerns on a wide range of issues. If you have a problem or a query that you think I may be able to assist with please contact my office in Templeton for advice. The office will be closed for the Christmas-New Year break from Friday, 22nd December and will re-open again on Monday, 15th January.

Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to gather together with the family and friends we love. It’s a time when life often slows a little and we are able to take stock of the year that has been and look forward to the things to come.

Some of us this Christmas, will welcome new members into our family through birth or marriage. For others of us Christmas will be tinged with sadness as we remember those who have been lost to us this year.

Whatever your plans make sure you remember to cherish those who are gathered with you, to smile and say hello to strangers, to take opportunities to heal past hurts, and to sing a few carols and remember the reason for Christmas.

The new Selwyn District Libraries trial hours have begun and exciting family-friendly activities are planned for every Saturday at all four libraries.

Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon said the extended Saturday hours mean programmes and activities will be available in the weekends as well as during the week.

HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? It is Christmas time again, unbelievable - a year of seasons just seems to disappear in a flash. So with that Merry Christmas to all our valued clients and a safe and prosperous New Year. Spiderban will be working throughout the Christmas period, just taking the stat days off. If you are going away it's a ideal time to get your house treated for spiders and flies. The inside preparation is mostly done and you are out of the house anyway. Leave a key with friends or neighbours and it will be all done when you arrive home. If you are staying home and have some spare time it's an opportunity to do a bit of basic pest control maintenance. To protect your home before the coming rodent season: • clear any overgrown plants from house walls (rodents love cover).

On my own home I have no planting near my walls.

• Trim all tree branches back at least a metre from rooves.

• Fit metal mesh to all weep holes in brick work - top and bottom. If you can fit the thick end of a Biro in the gap, a mouse can go through it (don't block the holes of air, and water must be able to pass through these holes).

• Any other holes around pipe work and around garage doors especially at the bottom of the reveals should be permanently blocked off ie sand and cement .

• Another thing we notice when treating homes is the number of houses with grass growing in the spouting. This is trouble waiting to happen and Christmas time is a good time to clean out this spouting.

All these tasks don’t need to be done in one day, just a little at a time. Enjoy your holidays and take care.

Recently the Rolleston Community of Learners teamed up for a fun and entertaining Jump Jam Extravaganza at Lemonwood Grove School.

The extravaganza was initiated as a participation event designed to promote physical activity, collaboration, creativity and fun across the eleven schools in the Rolleston area.

It was planned to be an unique way to bring together the children and staff from the schools for a common purpose which was fully inclusive.

The children enjoyed a day of entertainment, music and exercise with Jump Jam performances held throughout.

This event was a first for the Community of Learning (Kāhui Ako) and many schools had teams showcasing their amazing

The sun was shining outdoors but that didn’t prevent the school hall from being packed with families from around the community.

The senior Kapa Haka group has continued to build on their programme and kicked off the evening’s proceedings with a powerful welcoming performance.

The junior choir stood up and sung their hearts out and there were also outstanding solo singing and piano acts.

A group comprised of Clearview's representatives from the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival Representative Choirs, accompanied by a cellist, flutist and pianist performed for the audience, a segment enjoyed by all.

The senior choir concluded the evening in full voice and

reminded the audience that Christmas is just around the corner with some seasonal favourites.

Performing arts have been a feature of 2017 at Clearview Primary and the evening event was a fitting finale to the year adding to a memorable production and participation in the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival and Cultural Festival.
