In response to the support received from her community local Rolleston woman, Kate Wright, Wright decided it was time for her to find a way to give back.

Kate, a fully qualified early childhood teacher, lives in Rolleston with her husband Tim and their two children Thomas (12) and Annabel (10). She has an outgoing and vibrant personality, and is naturally a bright and bubbly person. But at times she uses a smile to hide her pain.

Kate suffers from clinical depression (first diagnosed eighteen years ago), generalised anxiety and her most recent diagnosis of obsessive compulsive disorder

around intrusive thinking.

“It has been very, very hard for me to explain what is going on for me,” Kate commented. “At times, with no explanation, my heart and brain do not want to work in sync. My heart wants to be bright and bubbly, but my brain takes over and if I do not take care of myself, my brain wins the battle.”

Kate has worked hard to overcome her demons in conjunction with assistance, from many sources. She is now sharing her experiences, and has become instrumental in supporting others in a Facebook group. “The key to my journey has been learning the importance of speaking. Kate has found being open and honest about her situation is cleansing and empowering especially with her own children.

“We want them to understand mental illness,” she said.

“New Zealander’s are closed books with our emotions, and that good old Kiwi attitude of ‘she'll be right’ can slowly eat us away inside if we do not talk, or seek the help that we need.

“Two and a half years ago I was really struggling, but the Rolleston community has been a huge part of my getting well. My husband and I were not able to do it alone, so the community stepped up and helped out. From donated food, cooked meals and offers of childcare, the so much appreciated list goes on - and we are so grateful for it all.”

Kate has now found herself in a situation where she can begin to give back to the community that helped her so much, beginning with sharing and telling her story to others.

Kate Wright is giving back to the Rolleston Community by sharing her story and making others aware of mental health issues.

She has already completed several talks around the district and said: “The awareness needs to be spread. New Zealand has lost far too many lives to mental illness and suicide. A change needs to happen and I am happy to start this change.”

It has been a busy couple of months at The Cat’s Pyjamas Pr esc hoo l a nd N u rs ery Rolleston. There has been a lot of interest amongst the Prep School children about aeroplanes which led to an excursion to the Wigram Air Force Museum.

It was reported that the children were all excited to catch the bus and go on an adventure to the Museum. They learnt about many different aircraft that had been restored and they saw a helicopter and fire engine as an extra bonus.

The children had a fantastic time, especially as they had the opportunity to be able to sit in some of the planes and they even had the courage to jump out of one of them! The children were also able to go on a scavenger hunt within their small groups and they ticked off the items as they found them -

The Selwyn Lions Club hosted a well attended evening on July 28th, which featured an emotional presentation from Lesley Elliot and Bill O’Brien of the Sophie Elliot Foundation.

The aim of the evening was to open the eyes of their community to domestic and relationship violence. About 300 people attended the talk, and many were able to chat one on one with the guest speakers.

Organisers from the Selwyn Lions Club were especially pleased by the large number of young people that attended.

The evening began with plenty of stalls for browsing, as well as wine tasting, and information was freely provided by Selwyn Gets Ready, Victim Support and Camp Quality. The Lions Club own stand was also popular and offered the opportunity to win with one of their fundraising raffles.

Tracey Summerfield, Summerfield Centre owner and the teaching staff especially thank all the parent helpers who made this fantastic experience possible.

Another highlight over the recent weeks was a visitor who came in to the Centre from Herman’s Bee Hives.

The children were extremely interested to learn about all the things that can be made from bees such as candles, lip balms, wax paper, moisturiser and of course honey.

“On the morning of the day we

had the visitors, the children enjoyed eating some honey on toast,” Tracey commented. “It was a great learning experience as the children found out how honey is made, the life cycle of the bee and a few other interesting facts about honey bees.”

In conjunction with ‘Bee’ learning, the children undertook the reading of books about bees and used their creativity to construct an amazing wall display and some bee artwork; which they took home to show their loved ones.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams was the first speaker of the evening giving an informative insight into crime within local communities.

Amy used the ‘open our eyes’ theme to emphasise the community’s responsibilities to combat crime. The Women’s and Families Co-ordinator for the Lions Club South Island, Tracy Henderson also spoke, and continued the theme of ‘open our eyes’ to community service.

The raffles were an outstanding success with many people winning some great prizes, donated by generous sponsors.

The Selwyn Lions Club would like to encourage all schools in the area to make contact with The Sophie Elliot Foundation to help promote their ‘Love-me-not’ relationship education programme in all secondary schools. The Sophie Elliott Foundation is a legacy to

Sophie Elliott, whose life was tragically taken from her following an abusive relationship. The aim of the foundation is to prevent violence against young women by raising awareness.

There has been a lot happening at the Rolleston Men’s Shed over the last month.

The group has been busy working hard and has recently completed a library box for the Prebbleton Community Association, as well as some display cases for the Selwyn Dog Training Club and a number of small jobs for members of the community.

There has also been a lot of success and fun, organising and holding sausage sizzles as fundraisers at local fetes and markets.

The Shed’s membership has been growing steadily over the last couple of months and the group has begun a new project to extend their woodworking shed.

Rolleston’s Men’s Shed are always on the lookout for new members and they would like to encourage others to come along to see what they do. The group meets three times throughout the week and the Group’s spokesperson Sandy Ferguson commented that everyone was more than welcome.

Men’s Shed members thank those in the community who have given the group their old car and truck batteries. The collection of the old batteries is another fundraiser activity for the Shed and is still currently running.

It’s been reported that many businesses have started this year’s new Responsible Business Awards’ survey and indeed quite a few have completed them and had their conversations with assessors.

Lincoln Envirotown are very grateful to the businesses who are busy completing their new comprehensive survey and online system. As with anything online, there have been teething problems and the organisers have been lucky to have a dedicated group of Assessors who have been helping businesses.

The Awards’ Evenings will be held at the end of October/early November. The evenings are an excellent chance for business people to meet and hear about business initiatives, whilst enjoying plenty of food and

refreshments.

Some great evenings are planned for the future, with guest speakers talking on such topics as, ‘building a business premises with re-used materials’, ‘the pros and cons of electric vehicles in business’, ‘sustainable wineries’, ‘the social enterprise model’ and ‘disposing of electrical waste responsibly’.

With the Awards being run throughout Selwyn for the first time there will be the added interest of a business winning the overall prize for the whole

district, as well as a new overall Selwyn prize for educational establishments.

Lincoln Envirotown appreciates how busy people are and realise that huge efforts are made to enter these awards. They are extremely grateful to the business community for their support. The group hope that businesses all will see that the growing awareness of sustainable practices and community involvement that results, is well worth the time and effort.

Amy Adams, National candidate for Selwyn: Being the local MP for Selwyn is a huge privilege, as is being part of a N ational-led Government which has guided New Zealand through some challenging times with a steady hand.

Owning a family farm with my husband means I understand wha t m a ke s o ur ru ra l communities tick. I am proud of the investments the National-led Government has made in improving broadband services for both rural and urban areas; and in strengthening our international trade ties and opening up new markets for our farmers and growers.

Meanwhile being the mum of two independent young people

keeps me grounded and helps me appreciate the issues that affect the next generation.

As your MP, I've worked hard to deliver more schools and c l a s s ro o m s ac ro s s o u r communities, better police services, a new marine reserve in Akaroa Harbour and roading improvements around Selwyn.

Some examples of my work in Parliament include legislation to combat cyberbullying and new approaches to deal with family violence in our communities.

I believe that for too long Government has been the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. We are starting to change this with our new social investment approach and I am

excited about the possibilities.

I hope that the voters of Selwyn will consider my track record and choose to give me the opportunity to continue to be a strong voice for this region for the next three years.

My family history is connected to this beautiful district, and it holds many special memories.

My mother grew up on a farm near Lincoln, and went to school in Ladbrooks. My greatgrandfather had a farm in Southbridge and donated some of it to the first Catholic Church many years ago.

I love the Selwyn District and all that it has to offer, and I want our region to grow, and prosper.

In the 1970s I worked for the National Railways out of Christchurch and for the National Airline Corporation (NAC) of New Zealand. I have worked for social welfare in Work and Income NZ too.

I love NZ First because it cares about the regions! One of its common sense policies talks about ‘Fair treatment for the regions’. We want a fair share of royalties to stay in the regions, and a fair day's work for a fair day’s pay!

No to a water tax, this is definitely not practical for our farmers.

We are committed to looking after our seniors, and making sure that they have adequate care and funding! We will extend the benefits of the Supergold too.

We want an affordable health care system, and an affordable housing market, with much lower immigration than we have

today. Our infrastructure is over -stretched, and New Zealand people need to be looked after first!

As Selwyn’s candidate for The Opportunities Party, I want to participate in a Government which prioritises the health and

well-being of people, the preservation of New Zealand’s natural environment and freshwater resources, and adequately prepares New Zealand for the effects of climate change.

When the SPCA encouraged Kiwis across the country to get their paws messy in the kitchen Clearview Primary School took up the challenge.

The annual Cupcake Day fundraiser provides a tasty way for New Zealanders to ‘bake’ a difference in the fight against animal cruelty.

Now in its ninth year, Cupcake Day is the SPCA’s fun, community-driven annual fundraiser with all proceeds going towards protecting abused, neglected, injured and abandoned animals. Since 2009, supporters of the charity have raised more than $2million through the baking and selling of cupcakes and other treats.

All the funds raised go directly towards helping animals in the bakers’ local areas.

In SPCA centres across the country, 46,000 abused and

neglected animals come through the doors every year in need of love and care.

While the SPCA Cupcake Day was August 14th, Clearview Primary School students supported the cause on Friday, August 18th. They sold around 700 cupcakes to the School community. These had been kindly made by students, teachers and parents, along with a generous donation by Rolleston New World of 250 cupcakes and icing.

A cupcake competition was held in conjunction with the

fundraiser to find the best decorated cupcake.

Winning cupcake entries came from Jason Galland, a teacher who created a cupcake of himself and Trina Wong, a parent who created a cat cupcake.

“This whole initiative was set up and run by the school leaders (Student Kaitiaki),” said a School spokesperson.

“The event was a huge success and at the end of the day the School raised $1,110.70 all of which will be going to the SPCA.”

With spring just around the corner, West Melton bowlers will be turning their attention to the upcoming season. Opening day will be held on Saturday, September 23rd wet or fine and for all the Club’s members it won’t come soon enough.

“New bowlers interested in joining the Club will be made most welcome,” said Club spokesperson Peter Bickley.

Bickley During the winter months members have been kept occupied by participating in a golf tournament at Weedons Golf Course, card and board game evenings and a night out at the Papanui Club Inc. “At our annual meeting which was held in May, the decision was made to install a new kitchen and to attach sound panels to the ceiling in the Clubhouse,” Peter reported. It was also planned to replace the old fluorescent lights with new LED lighting. All three projects have now been completed thanks to Mike Leigh, Leigh Colin Walsh, Walsh Ian Mckinlay and their band of willing helpers,” Peter concluded.

Futsal, is a variant of association football played on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football.

Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper and played with a smaller ball.

The Futsal Youth Nationals is an annual competition which has recent ly been h el d in Palmerston North with almost sixty teams, from seven regions battling it out to take top honours. This is the eighth Nationals and over 700 young

players (both boys and girls) were involved, with many seeing their efforts rewarded when their team took a title in one of the age group categories.

Selwyn players under the Mainland Banner were well represented in Canterbury teams and came out victorious in the Under 14 and Under 16 Boys. Mainland Under 15 Girls also emerged as winners in their age group.

“We have requirements for all of our coaches,” he said. ‘They need to have a Level 1 qualification and have coached in our local leagues for at least two terms before they can apply. We are getting to the point where we have to turn coaches away, which is great because it means there is competition,” he concluded.

Members of the Selwyn Launch Group held a much enjoyed and very successful disco on August 12th in the Rolleston Community Centre. Thirty five current and past members of the group attended to boogie to the music and enjoy a great supper afterwards. Heartened by such a

great turnout organisers from the Selwyn Launch Group are hoping to make the disco a regular event.

The Selwyn Launch Group is a voluntary group, formed in 2013 to advocate and support young people with disabilities in the Selwyn District.

Get spotted doing the safe thing is the message that Selwyn District Council is trying to teach local children with their latest road safety campaign.

Local schools have been given the opportunity to sign up to the ‘Get Spotted’ campaign, which was launched at the beginning of term three.

Currently eleven schools in the Selwyn area have signed up to participate. Once a school has signed up, the children have the chance to get spotted doing the safe thing! The Council advise parents to keep an eye out at the local school for the Get Spotted poster.

Parents can get involved in this campaign by; • Ensuring their child is confident and capable of crossing the road safely • always wearing their helmet when scootering or biking

Children spotted showing safe behaviour when heading to or from school could earn a reward!

“This programme has been developed to give recognition to those learners that are doing the right thing in terms of road safety awareness, by teachers awarding a small token such as a sticker or wrist band,” said Selwyn District Council School Road Safety Coordinator

“The idea is to positively reinforce good behaviour as opposed to penalising poor road safety behaviour.”

So far close to 4,000 ‘Get Spotted’ stickers and nearly 1,000 wrist bands have been given out to schools for learners displaying good road safety behaviour.

This campaign is available for both schools and earlychildhood educators and can be run based around the children’s needs.

Each school can choose when they want to start and finish the campaign, when they see the need, or have capacity.

“It’s not too late to get in touch with the Council to become involved,” Stephanie concluded.

Rolleston School pupils, Abigail (Yr3) Bianca Bothma (Yr1) recently performed group and individual routines at the Canterbury Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.

Bianca came first in the Stage 1 Freehand routine, which gave her overall first place and Gold.

Abigail came first in the Stage 2 Freehand Ball and Hoop routine which gave her an overall first place and Gold.

Abigail also received a trophy for the gymnast with the highest score in Stage 2.

Farmers, butchers, retailers and industry leaders gathered in Christchurch recently to celebrate the best flavours, styles and cooking innovations at the tenth annual New Zealand Pork, Bacon and Ham Awards.

Over fifty top New Zealand butcheries entered products to be judged, with a total of 223 entries.

Selwyn’s Ellesmere Butchery owners Chris and Sue Brown attended the ceremony and were understandably very proud to have won awards in five of the seven bacon and ham categories, these were: Boneless Ham - Silver Bone in Ham - Silver Dry cured middle bacon - Silver Shoulder bacon -Silver Middle eye bacon - Bronze.

On Saturday, August 12th, the Rolleston Rugby Club marked the end of the Under Ten’s season by combining their four teams to create two separate new sides.

Once the organisers had the new lineups they set them to compete against each other in a final game of rugby, on a full sized field. Playing on a larger field size was a first for the players.

This was a fantastic opportunity for the young players to get a feel for what it will be like next year, as they move up to the U11½ grade. With moving up a grade comes the thrilling move of also playing on the full sized rugby field - every weekend.

The game was a great display of rugby, which was played in front a large crowd of parents and supporters.

This award was to mark the ten year anniversary of the awards with points given for every award gained over these years; one for a bronze, two for silver, three points for gold, and five points for supreme.

Ellesmere Butchery had accrued forty one points over the ten years with, one supreme, seven golds, seven silvers, and two bronze awards.

Chris had not entered the Butchery in the competition for the last two years, but he

The two teams had many opportunities to showcase the skills and techniques they had mastered over the season and the game was filled with lots of great tackling, passing, try scoring and kicking.

The players all looked happy and confident coming off the field, and although tired, all were looking forward to next season.

Parents and players thanked the game’s ref James and comments were heard about how well the children would doubtless sleep that night after their introduction to the full sized field.

Ellesmere Butchery is a small butchery which has been run by the husband and wife team since 2006 and they have two part time staff who assist them.
