Competing at the NRM national three-day event championships in Taupo over the weekend of May 13th, local rider Emily Cammock almost missed out on the title of ‘Open Championship’ winner, after she was initially penalised fifty points, before the decision was overridden.

"This season has been a complete shambles for me. So this is really special," Emily smiled The West Melton mother of two posted a clear round and put pressure on defending champion Amanda Pottinger on the event's final day and came away with the win on her 12-year-old horse Shaw Lee. "I definitely rate this horse," commented Emily. "I have had him since he was an unbroken two-year-old and while he has been a bit of a rogue, he has always been a super jumper.

We just need to consolidate our flat work, and there is plenty of room for improvement."

On August 26th, and for the fifth time, organisers of Oxford’s Wearable Arts event will again present an outstanding evening of entertainment. But before the audience get to see the creativity of those who are competing there’s a lot of hard work going on in the background, and not the least of it is the attraction of more entries. Prizes for the first placegetters in both the adult and the student sections are outstanding, consisting of not only the kudos of taking the win but also flights and tickets to WOW in Wellington.

This biennial event now has a firm place in the district’s arts’ calendar with entries coming from far and wide.

“Last show we had a total of thirty entries from students and adults,” commented one of the organisers, “and this year we would love to see even more entries from surrounding Canterbury schools. We would really like to encourage local schools to get involved. It is a huge learning curve and confidence builder for a young student beg inn ing with designing a costume, before implementing that design, and then in most cases, showcasing it themselves on a stage, in front of an audience.”

I always say to both students and adults contemplating entering to ‘give it a go’,” she added. “The emphasis is always on encouraging them to take that next step to enter and then enjoy the experience. It is a lovely, friendly atmosphere during the night and everyone in past shows has enjoyed themselves enormously,” Jane ended.

16 year old Hannah Bates of the Selwyn Swim Club in action.

Sixteen year old swimming superstar Hannah Bates from the Selwyn Swim Club recently attended the Australian Swimming Championships and came home with a well deserved gold medal. She won gold in the 400 metre individual medley with a time of 4.53.20 minutes, along with a silver in the 200 metre individual medley.

Hannah will now represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in the Bahamas July 19th-23rd 2017.

Local West Melton woman Glen Dewe was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in June 2011.

“I had a choice of two package deals,” Glen recalls.

“An MRI, more surgery and Chemotherapy; or a mastectomy and if ‘IT’ hadn’t gone into the lymph nodes, no chemo. As my body was still under a huge strain from being chemically poisoned seven months prior, while at work, I chose to have a mastectomy and took a chance that ‘IT’ hadn’t travelled into the lymph nodes.

“I was very lucky and required no further treatment and two years later had a breast reconstruction. However I did end up with lymphedema (Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which excess fluid collects in tissues causing swelling. Lymphedema can be very debilitating and commonly affects one of the arms after breast cancer surgery. And is a consequence of surgically removing the lymph nodes in the armpit, or their damage caused by radiotherapy). I was issued with the usual thick beige sleeve and glove which I was very grateful for.

“However three years later I stumbled onto these beautiful gorgeous LympheDIVA’s sleeves and gauntlets.

Planning 101 by Robert Love: When it comes to people developing land for either social or economic gain, they will run into resource consent requirements, which given the complexity of the current legislative environment and the local Council planning structure, it is easy to put this into the too hard basket. What is it about upon hearing the dreaded term ‘you need resource consent’ or something to that effect that turns people off from proceeding with improving their

property?

Hopefully this first article in a series will provide a small insight into what is a resource consent; why you might need one, and a demystification of the consent process.

What is a Resource Consent and why do I need one?

In short, a resource consent allows you to carry out a development that is otherwise not allowed to occur as of right due to a breach of a rule in the local plan. It allows development to occur while managing the potential effects of the development through

Robert Love of Avanzar Consulting Ltd. consent conditions. To obtain a resource consent for your development an application needs to be made to the relevant Council.

What Councils do what?

Most areas will have two Councils they need to consider; the local District or City Council and the Canterbury Regional Council (ECan). Each Council has its own jurisdiction of certain consent types. Put simply the District Council will primarily deal with the subdivision of land and the use of that land, whereas the Regional Council will primarily deal with the take and use of water, various types of discharges, and works within the alluvial or coastal marine area to only name a few. For example, if you wish to divide your land and erect additional residential dwellings on it, you may need consent from the District Council for this part of the development to occur. But if no sewer system is available to the new properties, then you may need to apply to the Regional Council for a discharge permit.

How to find out if you need a consent?

Most Councils provide a preapplication service with the cost of this service varying between authorities. Alternatively, you could approach a private planning consultancy such as Avanzar Consulting, who offer a free hour consultation to discuss your proposal, consenting requirements, potential amendments, and likelihood of success.

On April 25th, 2015 one hundred riders gathered in Hawarden to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. The first 52 riders in the group were dressed in military uniforms and carried a cross, representing the servicemen from the Waikari, Hawarden, Masons' Flat and Peaks area who lost their lives over the course of three wars.

The balance of the riders were attired in either military uniform or period dress with many riding to remember a serviceman from their home area. The whole 100 Years 100 Horses event was filmed for a documentary.

It was a rousing, touching spectacle, so much so, that one of the organisers and riders is keen to recreate the event.

Lynda Barrington’s husband Garry Stevenson spoke to the News about his wife’s desire to attract riders for a similar Anzac Day presentation in 2018. He said she planned to ride between Burnham and Templeton and attend Anzac services in that area. While the

event is still in its early stages Lynda would like to get some commitment from those wishing to join them.

William Thomas (Bill) Milliken, was a Canterbury Rifleman, and also a past member of the Malvern Collie Club, of which Francine is currently a member. Bill was a member of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry and worked on the home farm of Brooksdale.

Lakeland Art recently held the opening of its new Leeston Gallery.

After the formation of a nine-person committee some months ago, Lakeland Art successfully applied for a startup grant from the Selwyn District Council and has since secured the lease of the vacant premises at 80 High Street, Leeston, formerly occupied by Leeston Drapery.

Lakeland Art is a sub-branch of the Ellesmere Art Group Trust which has existed for many years and for some time been guided by well-known arts identity Jill Lemon.

Lemon Averil Southward joined the Art Group six years ago and has been instrumental in encouraging new members and setting up a yearly school holiday

programme. Averil recognised the need for an arts centre in the growing Ellesmere community and floated the idea to a number of local artists.

The support she received was immediate and extensive. Since then more than seventy artists in various mediums have been

Once the male has seEled down in his roos ng place for the winter he lets off his pheromone and thousands can turn up. It is just about impossible to block them out, so if you find them and want them out; call for a treatment.

identified as living in the catchment area. No home for artists until now has existed in the 75 kilometre eastern corridor between Lincoln and Ashburton.

Leeston was the obvious venue and the former drapery store was not only available but was also the perfect size and layout.

Its location in the centre of High Street adjacent to the supermarket is visually appealing and has the space to accommodate aspects of both art display and tuition.

Lakeland Art will exhibit and sell art by its members but also have a monthly rotating exhibition by guest artists, as well as conducting art tuition for both young and senior students and still have space for a working artist.

Local business support for the concept has been unanimous.

Teachers of art at local schools have also been enthusiastic – there are seventy art students at Ellesmere College alone with no art or cultural centre to attend post-school, other than the Leeston Library.

The Lakeland Art committee wish to embrace all forms of art in the Ellesmere area and will invite artistic groups and schools to participate and display their art at the venue.

The committee also see Lakeland Art as a support group rather than being competitive with existing galleries in Darfield and Lincoln.

Collectively the committee is fortunate to have an excellent mix of skills including management and financial, and it will be working hard to not only gain local recognition, but also to become nationally recognised for both its high standard of art, marketing and management.

Is there life after golf? Local golfer and long time Parkinson’s sufferer Bob Scott of Whitecliffs,, is sure there is. Golf was abandoned last new year after some really terrible efforts (Bob’s words) and the realisation that breaking a hundred was now likely to be an impossible dream.

A novel Bob had written over the last few years had been gathering dust and he was finding it difficult to engage a publisher willing to give it a go.

Then amazingly an American publisher found it, liked the fresh writing style, liked the story and the offer to publish it was made.

On Friday May 26th, West Melton Primary School supported the global anti bullying initiative ‘Pink Shirt Day’ with students wearing pink to school.

“Overall we collected $363 for our Pink Shirt Day, which is going towards our Friendship Seat,” said Rita Spadoni, Spadoni of West Melton Primary School. “The idea behind the Friendship Chair is that whenever children have no-one to play with at lunchtime, they can sit on this seat and someone will come over and invite them to join in with their games. It is hoped children will approach the child in the seat, make sure he or she is alright and ask them to play. It also aims to help prevent bullying before it becomes a problem.

The seat can be a key beginning to promoting friendship and

kindness in youngsters and help build a sense of community.

This includes the values of friendliness, caring, respect, responsibility, valuing difference and including others,” Rita added.

Last year more than 300 schools, workplaces, community groups and well known New Zealanders participated in the anti-bullying campaign, making it the largest since 2009 when Pink Shirt Day was first launched in New Zealand. Mental Health Foundation Chief Executive Shaun Robinson said while

everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and respected, bullying is a significant problem in New Zealand.

“We know that students who are bullied are more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety and avoid going to school.

“As New Zealanders, we all have the responsibility to stand together to ensure everyone feels safe and valued. We must work together to say no to bullying and to support each other on Pink Shirt Day and every day,” added Shaun.

Rolleston Primary School kicked off term two with a range of interesting and fun events.

The students took part in a ‘Pirate Themed’ book week and had the opportunity to work in different classrooms with a mixture of ages. A fun pirate dress up day was included, along with a shared love of

reading with each other.

Year seven student, Zack Sewell also proudly presented the spectacular structure he has been working on this term, for viewing by the School. Zack has a particular interest in structures and built one as an independent project, designing and building it himself.

Rolleston School is pleased to announce that its new building is taking shape and included in the space will be a new classroom and an added indoor playing room.

The Discover team (New Entrants/Year One) children at Clearview Primary School were thrilled to be invited to participate in the Rolleston College ‘Rolleston Reads’ initiative programme. Designed to encourage enjoyment of reading, a relationship between the two schools has formed, with the Year Nine College students organising and initiating visits between the two

schools at least three times a term. The five year olds proudly read their books to the thirteen year olds and the older students read library books to their younger buddies in return.

“Reading to and with, is incredibly important to foster a love of reading. The benefits for students at both schools is enormous,” said a Clearview spokesperson.”

It’s the end of the first round of the Selwyn Netball Club’s season and Rolleston Netball Club (RNC) can report that it’s very pleased with its results to date. The Club has 27 'Saturday' teams ranging from year five and up. It also has fifteen Years one to four teams that play on a Monday and Tuesday. “It is fantastic to see so many enjoying their netball thus far in 2017,” commented RNC Secretary Mary Wiering.

Wiering “We have four Saturday teams that have won their grades in the first round and will now be moving

up into the next grade. There are also many staying in their current grade to compete in the second round of competition starting on June 10th. We are seeing some close competitive Saturday games, plus a lot of enjoyment had by all players.

The Year 1-4's are learning some great skills in fun games that will put them in good stead if they choose to playSaturday netball when they are bigger,” Mary added. “We would also like to take the opportunity of thanking all the 2017 volunteers in the Club, especially the coaches, referees

and bench officials. Without you all we would not be able to have the number of teams we have in the SNC competition,” Mary stressed. “As well I’d like to say a big thank you to the Club's sponsors, especially those businesses and families that sponsor our Players of the Day. It is great to be able to recognise and reward effort, sportsmanship and achievement for our players with a trophy and a wee treat. Well done to all the POD's for round one. We’ll see you all at the courts on Saturday, June 10th,” Mary concluded.

The first quarter of the year has passed quickly for the Rolleston Combined Probus Group with a raft of interesting speakers, including: Lee Germon, who told the group of his cricketing experiences as a New Zealand player, captain and C.E.O for Canterbury Cricket. He also touched on the difficulties involved in getting the Hagley grounds approved and completed for the World Cup cricket games.

Sabrina Blunt from the Blood Donor Centre relayed her experiences while travelling to Cologne, Germany, to bring back life saving stem cells for cancer

patients. The product was not allowed out of her sight at all times, especially at border controls, and all while following various safety directions.

Rolleston Combined Probus are taking up an offer to visit the newly repaired Christchurch Art Gallery after they listened to an informative talk by the director Jenny Harper about u n d e r st a n d i ng w ay s t o appreciate the Gallery and art in general.

Probus outings have been varied, including a tour of the Rolleston Men's Shed. The Group appreciated the opportunities it offered, while

providing the company of others, hobbies and interests shared, along with projects and aid within the community. A game of mini golf and lunch followed this visit.

“Those who went to the Buddhist temple in Riccarton thoroughly enjoyed some of their culture art collection,” reported the Publicity Officer for Rolleston Combined Probus, Valerie Watson, Watson “and the wonderful lunch that was unbelievably vegetarian. A highly recommended visit for anyone,” she concluded.
